Title: ALT-F4
Post by: LLogann on November 06, 2010, 06:27:00 PM
Sure it's cute to mess up the 2 weeker's but the honest truth is 1 in 17, 2 weeker's do not log back in.

HTC is trying to make a buck, and that kind of nonsense does not help.

ANYBODY typing "alt-f4" should get a chat ban

This is my wish.

wow thats sad 1 in 17, just think that could have been the guy that would give you a check 6 when you had no idea there was a enemy shadowing you, or the guy to be in your squad, or the guy you could have been good friends with. But instead he gets the old alt f4 joke that is so depressing when he finds out that it was a trick and he will prob assume that is how all the aces high community guys are just ppl being arses cause they can and they dont think of the result. Fortunalty for me when i had this joke played on me, my love and passion for flying and playing made me log back in and keep playing. What really makes this game a real expirence is the guys who have respect for other players. For those who are on thier 2 week trial and  you have this joke pulled on you plz report that player(s), and if you dont know how ask and wait. Salute have fun RedTail

The first time I learned about the alt-f4 joke was overhearing some one else telling another guy forget it, he knew what alt-f4 does. So I got curious, and tried it myself. :)

My thoughts were, "Oh that's what it does. Ok, I'll just hop back in."

Nowadays I occasionally explain in an obviously sarcastic tone that alt-tab enables the AN/APG-63 radar and alt-f4 uncages the AIM-120C from weapon safe mode.

Sure it's cute to mess up the 2 weeker's but the honest truth is 1 in 17, 2 weeker's do not log back in.

Back this up.

How do you know this?

I recall many many years back somebody did that to me in a chat room. Guess what I did? I felt sheepish for about 2 seconds until I remembered that was a windows "close window" command, then logged right back in.

So tell me, how do you get this number, other than pulling it from your behind? There's no way you could ever know this, since there's no way to track it.

You have obviously never taken a Sociology course my respected enemy.  Simple name tracking and hours compiled with a +/- of about 20%.

And if you don't mind me saying, troll, you fail to make any mention of the wish itself.

And since you asked, why do I need to prove anything to you?  All I need to do is plant this seed.  Now can you say without a shadow of a doubt that never has a new player not logged back?    Prove that?

Back this up.

How do you know this?

You make an outrageous claim, Llogan. I'm not the troll, you are.

How can you tell me that 1 out of every 17 internet gamers that have tried the 2-week trial and had the ALT-F4 joke pulled on them never returned?

You have not done a survey of them, because you don't know how many, how frequently it happens, or the demographics of the people it happens to. You can't know any of this. You can't track them down after they quit to ask them why they quit, and make a note on your spreadsheet, because, frankly, none of this can happen.

It's an impossible claim to back up.

As for your original wish: stupid idea. Sounds like you're sour at somebody for pulling it on you, and nothing else.

Many years ago, I learned the hard way...

I felt dumb, shook my head, and logged back in.  It doesn't mean I'm going to do it to new players, and I don't think it should be encouraged, but I don't think it's as serious as LLogann is saying.  If they cannot handle a little teasing, what will they do when they get shot down, or they run into a jabbing because someone thinks they HOed.

I'm all for respecting other players, and I understand how important new players are; but if they don't play because someone ruffled their feathers once, how long would they really last in the game anyway?

This is my wish.

1> I don't agree with your statistics.  You're explanation of "Simple name tracking and hours compiled with a +/- of about 20%" makes no sense AT ALL and has NOTHING to do with ALT+F4 usage.  I took a statistics class awhile back and if I remember nothing else about it, it was "you can manipulate statistics to say ANYTHING you want them to say."  How can 9 out of 10 dentists prefer CREST in one commercial, and then 9 out of 10 dentists prefer COLGATE in another?
2> What crawled up your butt this morning?
3> This has been happening for years now.. long before AH was even around.  Even before Windows it was CTRL+C.  HTC is aware that this is being done due to them adding to the little "hints" during the load screen, "You can quit the game immediately by pressing ALT+F4" or something of the like.  In my opinion, if HTC felt it was that big of an issue, then they would have already implemented  something like what you suggest.
4> If they in fact DID NOT come back due to that prank being played on them, then they probably don't have a sense of humor and wouldn't be beneficial to the game environment anyway.  How did you slip through?
5> You call us Trolls, yet you're the one who started this absurd thread?  You act like this is something new and is a huge deal when in fact it isn't!  I bet you were one of the people whining and crying about how YOUR GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE was ruined when the CLAWS came out?  Get over it, laugh at life a little, and move on...

Title: Re: ALT-F4

Do keep it in perspective.....  I'm not saying a week of chat ban, more like 5 minutes.  If you think about it, it would open up a new door for tricking people.........  Getting somebody to type it out just so you can stop their chatter........

everyone in this thread typed alt+f4....your all banned!  :P

As for the "yours stats are wrong" people.....  You have all, also never had a course such as "How to lie with Statistics."  (Yes that is a real class at most universities) OK so yeah, no crap it's flawed, same as all data collection is.  But even if it was 1 in 100, how many new players do you think HTC gets in 1 year?  Say it's 100 player a month, 1200 per year and now 12 of those new players will choose never to log in again.  That comes to $2,158.56 USD per year out of HTC's pocket.

Stop from being yourself for a moment and become Carrie (Business Admin) for a moment........  How would you feel if you knew 12 potentially paying customers never came back?

And as for that data tracking.........  If you look up a new players name who has has about an hour of gameplay day 1 of tracking, and 2 weeks later they still have less than 1 hour of playing.....  Sure it could be a number of different reasons why they never logged back in, but at the same time, how can you sit here and tell me it isn't because of our childish actions?

How can you sit here and tell me it is?  Your observations are based purely on speculation.  You admit that you cannot control the internal validity to your numbers, yet still stand behind them.  There are multiple confounding variables with your "research" which isn't really research at all.  You are at the hypothesized part of your observational research, explaining to us how one would do it, but you never actually doing it.  Your numbers are inherently flawed.

Second, from a business admin stand-point.  How much time (time=money) would HTC have to spend implementing and moderating this?  Skuzzy might spend hours replying to emails or making fixes because people felt they were wrongly banned.  Risk vs. reward, is it worth it to put in man hours to save what might be 1 or 2 people a year?  Especially considering there are probably dozens more who leave for other issues (i.e. caps).

How can you sit here and tell me it is?  How can you tell me it isn't?  And with this ambiguity, how can the people running the business not take action against it?

Second, from a business admin stand-point.  How much time (time=money) would HTC have to spend implementing and moderating this?  NONE... The code is already in place, it's a question of adding that word to the word-list.    Skuzzy might spend hours replying to emails or making fixes because people felt they were wrongly banned.  Risk vs. reward, is it worth it to put in man hours to save what might be 1 or 2 people a year?  Especially considering there are probably dozens more who leave for other issues (i.e. caps).  You do realize typing the F word gets you a chat ban right?  So what is there to talk about?  No work for Skuzzy.  Fword you or ALTF4, to the code it's the same thing.

HTC is operating a vast conspiracy for his player base to develop an unhealthy attraction to sheep, thus making him millions from his hidden financial stake in the underground sheep herding business.

How can you tell me that's not true?  Oh, because I have no evidence.

You also chose to ignore some of my other points in the second paragraph, like policing the system (especially considering Alt F4 isn't always used to trick noobs), or other issues that might be more pressing for HTC.

I didn't ignore you Bro, I just said that there is no additional work for the Skuzzy.  Same as nobody calls them when they said a bad word, they won't for this either.

But seriously? Come on man. You could say the same thing about 2 weekers getting shot down and not logging back in. When I started a few years back, and asked how to start a squad, I got the old "Alt-F4". When I logged back in I told them the game shut down, we all laughed, and they told me I was now an official Knight. They then proceeded to help me by explaining that I should probably fly with a squad rather than try to start my own when I hadnt played the game much. For me, the Alt-F4 experience actually benefitted me and help me learn the ropes a bit and even land me a seat in the Drunken Monkeys. So, if a two-weeker doesnt log back on, then he probably hasnt his heart set on the game in the first place. For me, I laughed, shrugged it off, and proceeded to litter the cartoon world with plane parts.  :airplane:

Quick question, which makes players more likely to quit?

A)Alt F4 prank
B)Having to chase 60 percent(made up stat) of players just to get into a fight
c)getting gang raped

I tell ya what at least if I fell for the prank even once that was the only time, but dealing with a timid community after playing with suicidal "balls to wall" players in console games like call of duty or quake, now that is something that would make me not want to come back if I wasn't so obsessed with flying.
However we can't penalize people for not playing the way we want, just saying if I logged on and having to fly 5 mins to a fight and then getting ran from would make this game seem like a big waste of time. Especially when they could go turn on the xbox and see more action in half the time. You can't please everyone, but I really don't think the alt F4 joke is what causes people to never log in again.

I think a 240 hour chat ban for typing alt-f4 into the chat buffer would be reasonable, personally.

It is a stupid, juvenile and not funny "joke" that gives new players a really bad impression of the game.  I do not see this kind of mistreatment of new players in any other MMO genre I have played.  It is nothing but destructive to the hobby.

Iv seen it in every online MMO Iv ever played.

I've seen it in one other game community, until one day it suddenly stopped.

What happened was that the 'management' cracked down, and said: if you abuse the new players, expect a 2-day ban from the forums.  And guess what - the noob-abuse stopped immediately, and suddenly the entire community was a whole lot more pleasant.

Alt F4 is one of my pet peeves and I couldn't agree more, doing that to some newb 2 weeker in the main should be a 24 hour total ban, not just chat, unable to log in and fly as well.

Do that around me in the TA and you'll be watching TV for an hour waiting for the boot timer to run down.

You want AH to stay alive, vibrant, continue to grow, then we need to KEEP more of those 2 week wonders.
Not abuse them.

I can see it in the TA.  Completely understandable.  The TA SHOULD be a sanctuary for learning.

Not so much in the MA.

Overall, most win-doze users should already know what the alt-F4 command does to any program that is running.

I'm really amazed how strongly some folks feel about a stupid joke.  I've personally never felt inclined to use it myself, but it still amuses me that it works.  It's not like telling someone that their mother died or something.  I find it as funny and harmless as asking a new guy on the flightline to go get a bucket of propwash, or a new guy in the machine shop to go ask around the shop and find out who has the aluminum magnet.

Juvenile? yes
Amusing? matter of opinion
Cause for inquisition (other than in TA)?  Hardly.

ive done it very occasionally, and it still makes me smile when I see it :)

Its an initiation although I can see the other side of it, if even 1 in 50 new players dont fire up AH again thats not good. although I suspect anyone who gives up after one alt-F4 wont deal with AH's steep learning curve very well anyway ...

how about having an eg. alt-F5 command which just boots you to the TA instead? then we can send the noobs to go and bug ghosth instead ;)

You have been playing too much Zork...

Ha.  Pick up lamp.  light lamp.  kill thief with sword.  That was pretty great back then.  No online mutli-player though.

You have obviously never taken a Sociology course my respected enemy.  Simple name tracking and hours compiled with a +/- of about 20%.

And I will bet you that you're probably around 100% off of your figures, but then trying to use something you learned in a college socialogy class and trying to use it to determine the ratio of new players that have left as a result for falling for the Alt+F4 trick is laughable.

Wow, I didn't think the mods for Hello Kitty Online Adventures were so harsh.

I have had a PM conversation with our Leader regarding this thread........ (our Leader, not my Leader.... FYI)

He tells me he has thought about it but feels it would do more harm than good.  I'm not going to directly argue with The Man, but I have to think that you all, the community, might change his mind..........

And do keep in mind, I'm only asking for a 5 minute chat ban.

At the end of the day, even you Krusty, the players here should be concerned about the best interest of the game, the company, the atmosphere.............

A 5 minute chat ban might even open up a whole new world for poking fun.  Talking the new squadmate into typing it just to laugh at him, or even the squeaker that talks too much..... How cool would that be?

My only concern regarding this topic is "what's good for HTC"

You can sit here and increase your post count calling me names, but at the end of the day, give me one good reason why this is a stupid request?  My standpoint comes from being a small business owner.  PLEASE..... Explain why, in your opinion, this is a bad idea.

I want to hear it, I need to hear it.

Sure, as soon as anyone who asks 'how do i start my engine' or how do i fly a plane' or any other stupid question that you could have found out by going to the TA or reading the help page gets you a chat ban as well.

This.

I don't see ALT-F4 as a joke, I see at as another opportunity for the new player to load up the game and see the 'Training Arena' after logging back in.

Just so you know how old the joke is, we used to play it a lot in aol chat rooms.  Except back then it was a different command.   And dont forget the old esc p for points back in aw.  And dont even get me started with the sheep jokes.   A few years from now, some experienced guy will tell some new guy to press whatever ms new command will be and the game will shutdown.  And that experienced guy will smile as he remembers when he pressed alt f4 for the first time.  Then he'll go on to tell the same lame sheep jokes we tell now.

Alt-F4 Comments are funny in my honest opinion, but I think the first time people log in, the message which tells you ALT-F4 kills the game should be shown.

Alt F4 gags have defined the AH community in some way, bringing out the prankster side in what is already a great game. Its in the venacular of the player base, just like racist and offensive terms or words that have sunk into common usage because of attitude changes or lowering of standards or indifference.

If you take it seriously or are just too dumb to realize that alt F4 shuts down whatever application you are running, its your fault for falling for it.

And in regards to the "lack of funds" argument, the whole policy of AH2 is not to charge until your hooked, and even then there is no guarantee that they will subscribe. Half the two weekers either cannot pay, or do not want to. But the ones that do become dedicated players like ourselves and in my opinion, that alone vindicates them, if they fall for the joke, they WILL log back in and have a laugh at it and know not to do it again.

Oh and "Firesuit on"
