Heres the story,
i just EAS'ed from the USMC, i have a friend who is about to EAS. Whenever we were miserble etc lol in daily grunt life or in iraq etc...We always had a thing about how we were going to move to Australia and enjoy paradise and beautiful woman, drinks on the beach etc. Well turns out we wana make it a reality now. Just wondering if anyone has any advice or tips on how to make it a smoother process.
As far as work etc, i was told by the VA i can use my GI Bill over there, so id like to go to school. Also, i had done some traing with the Australian army and a warrent officer told me they have a deal where you can join the Australian army and get your citizenship, much like the US has.
Thanks for any help or advice etc.

If you think Australia is all about that, then you're going to find out the hard way that you're dead wrong.
Granted I've never been to Australia, but there is no country in the world that could be considered 'paradise'... at least unless you have a TON of money.
I would definitely have to advise that you take an extended visit (month or more) and get a feel as to what life is like over there before you decide to move.
I'm not saying that it's bad there.. I'd actually love to visit sometime... I'm just saying that I doubt it is the paradise that you are thinking. If you want beaches and beautiful women it may be easier for you to move to the west coast or Florida than to go through the hassles of relocating across the world.
-
lol no no no, im fully aware its not going to be "paradise." The paradise thing was just like showing how we thought about it to get us through the hard times. Honestly, its more for adventure, change of pace...some excitement etc.

Australia!?! man that place if full of convicts..and the women are beautiful...till they talk that is..the accent...oh the accent :lol :lol :lol :lol ... seriously though, not a bad place ..not quite NZ but well on it's way :D.
-
hahah, oh how i love the accent. No really, everyone i grew up with etc, when we graduated went to college, or traveled etc. My friend and i went to the recruiting office, to boot camp, and to iraq etc..., which is exactly what i wanted. Now im 23, i just wana go out and explore and live life you know? I dont want to wake up one day when im 35-40 and say woulda shoulda coulda. 23, i know im still a young buck, but yea.

Good luck with it Bored. :aok

If you joined the Australian Army you might find yourself back in Iraq only with worse food and lower pay. Maybe you should think about the Australian Navy because they have Hydrographic vessels based in Cairns which is about as close to your description of Paradise as you can get. Sail up and down the Barrier reef charting and identifying shipping hazards. We have a friend who did that for years before she recently got re assigned to Sydney.

Doesn't Australia also have some pretty restrictive firearm laws?

Everyone knows the aussie accent is like a lobotomized cockney - it comes from your criminal genes.

As you can see, we have noisy neighbors.

They are not as pretty as you may think........
In fact, many beautiful women in Brisbane or Sydney are usually just tourists..... So work on your accent and pretend you're a local!!! That is your in!!!

I've lived in most parts of the country and anywhere between Ballina and the Gold Coast is seriously the best spot.

Folks, you should keep in mind, though, that the only reason Britain started sending convicts to Australia is that they couldn't continue sending them to America after 1776. ;)
-
Bored123 go visit first take a look around & see what your in to. Get a temporary work visa & try a job out in an area you like. Yes the pay will be more than most jobs in the USA & yes you will get more work benefits than State side as well.
But don't commit to citizenship until your sure, you don't want to change your mind at a later date & have to go through the whole process of becoming a US citizen again.
As far as places to live there? There all tolerable some better than others just depends on what you like.
-

I thought that the US had a higher GNI per capita.

You can hold dual USA and Australian citizenship. A lot of folks have dual USA and whatever citizenship. Plus Australia does not make you give up US citizenship. However there is no need to become a citizen for a trial run.
It's a dream. You are young. I say go for it!
Also, thank you for your service.

I think you have to have a parent of Australian decent to qualify for dual citizenship. Unless something has changed my daughter has dual with Australia & USA.

Those numbers would be about right with all the billionairs & millionairs here in the USA. Take them out of the equation & just compare the average working guys income & it is very different.

He just needs to gain Australian citizenship and retain his American one if US law allows it to be a dual

You can use median statistics for that. Usually, though, median stats and mean stats are not all that much different for such national measures.
-
Either way i look at it, its going to be a long process. After my research, i think my best bet to start with, is to get the 12 month holiday/work visa. Which allows me to work up to 6 months at one job and then 6 months at another, then i can feel things out, and hopefully get something accomplished while in Australia. Should be an adventure! :)

T
Not for service men and women or vets
but if you are a civilian get busted with a weapon from the 'prohibited list' and you have no gun safe to put them in and you have no exemption from cheif commisioner of Victorian police (this is for Victoria)
your looking at about 5 years in the slammer and a 24.5k fine on top of that (thats the maximum penalty)
also in Victoria, if you get the exemption, the police can come do random checks on the weapons to see if they are properly secured and you can not denie them into your home
but Victoria's weapons laws are very very tight (strictest in the country)
but in other states to my knowledge the laws are pretty reasonable, I'm not entirly sure about the laws there though due to i'm from Victoria, If you haven't caught on yet :P
