Title: Guitars
Post by: Banshee7 on January 26, 2011, 10:36:32 AM
Whether you play them, attempt to play them, or just like to look at them, what are your favorite guitars.  I'm a fan of Jackson Bloodline.  I have a JS21 (I think) Dinky.  Next on the list I want is a Rhoads V.

My guitar

Rhoads V in the color I want

The other two guitars that I plan to own in the future that are not a Jackson is a Gibson Les Paul and an Explorer!

What about you?

I'm not really much of a player. I have an old Gibson that has been in the family for a long time. My Daughter has 3 guitars but I do not know what they are. Her boyfriend plays lead guitar in DunVille. He has several guitars.

I've been playing for almost a year.  I'm pretty much self taught.  Right now I can play a few songs (mainly Metallica), but not very many.  If I don't get good, I at least hope to have a good collection!

Fender Strat Squier

Bought it just to mess around playing the blues.

My everyday guitar is a Taylor 710 I picked up in the early 90's.  Been playing it since I bought it new back then.  It sits next to my recliner in my living room. :)

Others acoustics that I have and play:  a mid 90's Martin D41, a mid 90's Guild F512, a mid 80's Yamaha classical.

I only have two electrics now, which I don't play much anymore:  A 1998 Fender Roadhouse Strat and an 1990 Ibanez RG770.

My only amp now:  a 1998 Fender Twin.

I still turn into a kid in a candy store every time I go into a music shop.  I just can't afford the candy anymore... :lol

I was in a band 8 years ago and at that point I had a lot more gear but I have since whittled it down to 2 ESPs and a Mesa Triple Rectifier (using the el-34s not 6L6s)  head with a Marshall JCM900-B cab.

late 90's Eclipse not the newer models, with the old pearl trim & the EMG-81 active pickups.

Both are 6 strings (not the new 7 strings).

I'll post some non-marketing pictures later when I get home.

My two.

First is a KH-602 with EMG 81/85 active pickups.

Second is an M200 also with the EMG 81/85 combo.

I play em through a either a Randall KH-120 halfstack or a Hughes and Kettner Attax 80 112 combo, depending on how much noise I'm wanting to make.   :D

EDIT: I also have an older BC Rich Warlock that I found all beat up in a pawn shop.  It took awhile, but I refinished it, resoldered the bad connections, etc.  Plays like a dream now.  I'll try to snap a pic of it later this evening.

Is bass okay? I have an RBX375 for regular playing, and then I have an RBX374 with flat wounds on it so it sounds more like a standup bass.

Epiphone Les Paul and Epiphone Supernova...(young and foolish)

Vox ac-50 and too many pedals to name.

Will buy a fender bassman amp one day! Used one in a studio once and easily the best amp I've ever heard.

Is it hard to play because of the number of strings or the thickness of the neck?

yeah.... it does... too bad I can't crank it anymore (I live in a condo).
some of the setups have I used to use in the past
amps..
rack mounted mesa duel recto split with a fender supersonic head
&
Randal head.

My all time favorite was...

I had a roommate who couldn't afford rent so he gave me his old 'guitar'. It was a child sized guitar called the 'shredder' and I took it, changed the machines on it, put some EMG-81s on it, and it soon became the most badass POS guitar around.

It takes a bit to get use to. I wouldn't recommend jumping from a 6 to an 8. It throws you way off.

Have you played a 12 string?
A 12 string is set up differently, it's got strings set up in octave pairs, you play it just like a 6 string. It just has a bigger sound, as opposed to a 7 or 8 string where strings are added to increase the guitar's range.

I have a very, very old Aria acoustic/classical guitar. I've made attempts to find out it's particular model and age,
unfortunately with no avail. It needs a new set of strings at the moment, but she still sound like a beauty.
I'm afraid to go out and buy some strings for I am unsure if she needs a particular type or brand, and there seems
to be a lack of specialists nearby, even though I live in a more populated area of Alaska.

I have another classical guitar as well, but considering it was previously my older brother's it's not in good shape.
I constantly forget the maker.

Will take pictures if anyone wants a look? Assuming I can find some free time...

I used to be a pro - in the seventies (guitar amps were steam driven them days).
Had a Les Paul and various others when I was younger.
Now got a Les Paul Recording Copy, Gibson 12 string, Stratocaster under my bed quietly rusting away.

Favourite memory - playing on stage with a Selmer 30 with sprung reverb.
Used to play 'The Boxer' (I am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told)
In the chorus I'd kick the amp (Lie la lie -- <BOOOOOM> Lie la lie lie lie lie)
Once accidentally kicked it off the stage (Lie la (Oh Crap) lie -- <BOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM> Lie la lie (aieeeeeeeee) lie lie lie (my leg is broken!!!)...)

We are a "musical" family and we seem to "collect" instruments  :D

Personally I have a Jackson 6 string, and LesPaul copy 6 string, and a Yamaha acoustic 6 string. Also a 5 piece drum set.

Oldest son has 2 keyboards, a Casio and a Yamaha

Youngest son has a 12 string acoustic, a 6 string acoustic, 2 BC Rich guitars, a Warlock and a Beast. The Beast we just replaced the pick-ups to EMG powered ones.

Wife plays the piano (we have an upright player) and the tenor sax.

While none of us are pros, we do all have a good time!

That's my family too.  :)

I was fortunate enough to grow up with a lot of musicial instruments, and it's been passed on to me, my siblings, and now my nieces.

At first, my wife never understood why we had so many guitars since they can't be played at the same time.   :lol

My Dad has a couple of Martins (1971 D28S, mid 80's HD28), a 1968 Guild Mark VI Classical, and some odd 12-string that looks like it could've been bought at Sears and Roebuck.  I got to play these growing up, and still do when I visit my folks.

Twenty years ago, I left my very first electric guitar (an Aria Pro II) at their house, and now at 67, he just bought himself an amp and is driving my Mom nuts.   haha

Took a few photos of some of my getfiddles last night

my apologies if I made them to big

the first pic is of my Fender Strat and my beloved Custom XXX by Shecter
(http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff432/TCofAcesHigh/TCsGuitarPics_StratandCustomXXX.jpg)

this next pic is of my Dixon, from the research I done trying to find the history behind this guitar, one of the guitar websites said it was a Martin's Guitars attempt at a second line ( kind of like Gibson / Epiphone or Fender / Squire or Ovation / Applause ) the Dixon name only lasted little less than 2 years........ This guitar sounds so sweet it took me nearly 5 years to give in and install a Dean Markley under the Bridge "Line" Pickup.... I was so scared I would ruin the sounds and Harmony of this piece..... It took me over 4 hours just to shave the bridge down on the bottom to make up for the thickness of the Dean Markley pickup.... I was so happy when after all was said and done, it still sounded just as sweet as it always had and the added benefit now is it can be played thru an amp.. but you would never know it if you closely inspected it.  I have had friends want to borrow this guitar and dang if it not take me nearly six months running them down to get it back....and then they bug me to buy it last standing offer to me was for $800........ but it will never be sold............ I would rather have this verse a Taylor Auditorium that cost around 3900.00+/-..... it sounds that good....

Next is a pic of an Ibanez Artist which I started my oldest daughter on when she turned 12, she had been into the violin and into Keyboards ( note she and her Sister have 2 nice keyboards  Yamaha and Casio 76 key and the yamaha is 88 key ) a Telecaster copy I built/modified myself and then the Berhinger copy of a Strat which I got my yonger daughter to playing when she turned 12 as well, ( the girls are now 22 and 18 )

This next pic is of my JayTurser - Screamin Eagle ( that's what I call it, this guitar is very fun to play and has a fast action similar like a Dinky (Jackson )
it does nicely for me both acoustic and amplified
(http://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff432/TCofAcesHigh/TCsGuitarPics_JayTurserScreaminEagleAcousticElectric.jpg)

I will see if I can get some more pics of the rest of my guitars....... damn batterys died in the camera and my rechargeable ones quit on me several months ago ( are worn out )

I have an Ovation Celebrity, I have a Tradition Les Paul ( First Edition ), I have a Mexican FatStrat HSS 3 tone Sunburst ( Made in Mexico Fender ), and a few other guitars

I am not a player, I am not Great ... I just play at it ....... am soon to be 43 and I started when I was around 8, started taking lessons around age of 11, been in a few Bands back in my Teens and one during my Navy Tour, then one back in 2000 thru 2003....but nothing serious...... just love to jam , love to make up my own music, riffs, melodys verses playing something someone else made or recorded

anyhows..... sorry I rambled on for so long and again, sorry if the pics are to large...... ( I did resize them smaller they all were original 1600 x 1200 size )

great storys  Mir, Fugitive, and Billyd .... everyone

bring on more pics  :aok

I'm right envious of all of you.  I just recently came to owning a Dixon.  From what I'm told by my father in law it's a 3/4 or something I have no idea.  I tried learning a long time ago on one with a warped neck that wasn't too easy.  Now I just have to get some strings and finally learn to play, something I've always wanted to do.

I have an old Gibson that has been in the family for a long time.
Whats a long time?  You know what year and make it is?  a 1966 SG perhaps?  A 1957 Les Paul Junior maybe?  You may have yourself a goldmine there depending on what it is.  Post a pic of this old guitar and describe its general condition.

I have a blue Ibanez (she's ok, seems to break a lot though), an orange Dean "mini" Flying V (That's my baby right there, definitely my favorite guitar to play.), Texas Flag Telluride, Arbor Bass, and a really old acoustic guitar that my mom played when she was a kid.

The next guitar I wanna get is a Fender Strat, hopefully within the next year, she'll be added to my little "collection."

The only Gibson's I like were the ones that were made in Kalamazoo, MI.

I just have a cheap Squier Bullet and an Orange Crush 30R.

I have switched from being a self taught drummer selling a full 1984 DW kit in 1996.   That was tougher than saying "I do".

I couldn't have done it...I feel for you.

The closest thing I've done is sell off my original NS-10's after I've had them sitting in their boxes for 5 years.  And I still was hesitant.

"I have a 30 year old Aria, unfortunately the only thing worth any money on it is the DiMazio PAF pro pickup I fitted."

Phatzo, You never know with those old Jap guitars. My '77 Aria still plays like a wet dream and all stock. I'd planned on adding a trem in the 80's, routing for HBs, new finish...

Thank God I never got around to it. Google "Dragon Strat" one day. Maybe not valuable but still a cool piece.

I have two Charvels, the other is maybe Mk3 or 5 (made in Japan)from late 80's modded with Seymour Duncan Custom as a bridge mic, and a Fusion from 90's (Korean?).
Two acoustics, an ancient and bad Italian EKO 12 string and a new Yamaha 6 string with piezo mic.
I also fulfilled an old dream and bought a PRS Standard 22 -94 to reward myself for long and somewhat unsuccessful hobby of guitar playing.

After years of playing through transistor amps and stomp boxes I bought a Fender Super 60 tube amp and used a POD 1.0 and later 2.0 to create a distorted sound with delays and reverbs as the Super 60 has a quite harsh distortion on its own. POD 2.0 was then archived and POD X3 Live floorboard model took its place. I also bought small single ended 5W tube amps with EL84s to play stereo and also built two small cabinets with Celestion Vintage 10 speakers and began to lean heavily towards all tube sound and modified the amps from EL84s to 6L6s. Last year I built a SLO clone as a full tube preamp and aim to build a push-pull stereo power amp (20-30W) and replace the POD X3 Live with a dedicated effect device.

poor cell phone camera:

Red one on the left is a frankenpoop made from the neck of a guitar I had signed by Tesla (broke it in drunken rage with GF at the time), current body signed by the "Rust in Peace" line-up of Megadeath.

Blue clear-coat is a USA Squire Pro-Tone with gold hardware. It looks pretty, but the action is crap. The tone is really bright, even with the maple neck.

Black thing behind it is a no-name with a humbucker at the bridge and it has a great tone.

Bass hanging in the back is a no-name P-bass copy, and in the corner are 2 junk acoustics.

Vox Valvetronix VT15 real tube amp, it is as loud as the Crate G130C XL below the stand. The Crate has it's moments, I think the input jack has a short, but it can rock. On the floor is a Digitech RP-5, not great, but I have a few decent tones set that work with the Crate. The Vox has some built in models that are just golden though. Played solid state my whole life until on a whim bought this... oh what a difference a real tube makes!

On the stand is a Mackie 16 channel mixer, old Yamaha 4 track, Dr-660 drum machine, Alesis compressor, Furman power conditioner, and a broken Digitech effects processor. Shure SM-57 and Audio Tecnhica M4000S.

Nothing awesome, but enough to do some decent music.

Heya Filth,
I would hold on to that one if I was you..... those with the Scrolling Abalone & mother of pearl inlay on the Fretboard should be the Custom Diamond series ones.....

they still offer the c-1 customs but have stopped with the fancy scroll engraving/inlay  ... now they just come with doubled up Wedge shaped  fret markers

and the price for the newer less detailed ones have dropped their price by roughly $300 to $400 dollars.....

depending on the year of yours, it retailed between $1,100 to $899.00 roughly..... some places more.....

Thanks!  I walked in the store like 20 years ago to pay off the layaway on my Rhoads, and they had just got that in...I promptly put that ty-dye on layaway  :D  The salesman also happens to be my old guitar teacher.  A couple years ago he found a tye-dye King V for sale, and looked into it, and the guy wanted six grand for it.  Needless to say I try not play mine out too much.

Whether you play them, attempt to play them, or just like to look at them, what are your favorite guitars.  I'm a fan of Jackson Bloodline.  I have a JS21 (I think) Dinky.  Next on the list I want is a Rhoads V.

The other two guitars that I plan to own in the future that are not a Jackson is a Gibson Les Paul and an Explorer!

What about you?

I have a no-name acoustic I had as a kid.  I have an Ovation Balladeer acoustic before the internal electronics were invented.  I have a Gibson Les Paul electric that really wales, but I cannot crank it up like it was designed to be played in my neighborhood, besides it would blow out my windows.

Would like to get a 12 string electric, but Rickenbackers are expensive collector items.  I'd settle for an import copy, maybe Ibanez makes one.

Will get a Strat and a Tele one of these days.

Fingerstyle jazz of old American Standards is my preferred musical style.

I owe my interest of getting back into guitar after 40 years away from it to Gary (Class of '68) Boca Bobcats.  This guy has played in bands since the mid-1960's and owns over 70 guitars, each one has its own unique sound.

The Warlock has a cool story behind it.  I found it in a pawn shop in San Bernardino (spray painted black and REALLY beat up).  I decided to make a project out of it.  I ended up gutting it, stripping the paint, staining it cherrywood, clearcoated it, cleaned up the pots, and rewired it with new pickups.  After setting it all up, surprisingly the darn thing played like a champ.

Nice!  I've been looking at a JS32T and a JS32 with Floyd Rose at Guitar Center.  If I had the money, I'd go with the RR.

The Jumbo Frets I'm torn on.  I have on;y been playing guitar for almost a year.  My JS22 was my first guitar, so I thought the Jumbo frets would be a good idea in helping me learn on.  Now they seem to get in the way.

I'm thinking I will go with the ESP before I go with the Rhoads.  Both are under $300.  Since I'm still a beginner, but not complete n00b, I don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a really great guitar.

It depends on how you like to play, I suppose. I find the Jumbo frets a great asset to my playing and would never go back, but that's just me.

The whole feel of the RR3 is just something special, though. The neck is just perfect for metal... I never understood why people banged on about necks so much until I played my Jackson.

It was a  :O moment, for sure.

It'd be a love or hate instrument to live with, I imagine.

You can't sit with it sitting on your right leg, you have to sit with it between your legs. I prefer that and sit with all my guitars like that anyway, though...

I let the RR3 sit on the chair rather than my legs and it works perfectly. The neck will sit right up, though, so you might not like playing like that. I always have, so I prefer it.

I can't recommend the RR3 enough... It's awesome.

Part of me wishes I spent the extra cash on the RR24 (neck-through, 24 frets)... but the RR3 is killer.

Yeah, the Rhoads I played Saturday was absolutely amazing.  I didn't mind playing it between my legs as I usually play my guitar like that when sitting down, too.  I've always loved the Jacksons.  They just fell "right."  But that ESP also feels pretty great, too, and it sounds amazing.

That's a fair call. I haven't played the cheaper Jacksons, so I don't know what they'd be like. My RR3 is a model or two up from the one in your first post.

One thing I will say about guitars is... Don't be afraid to drop the coin right away and get something good/what you really want.

A lot of people suggest getting a cheap guitar to start with and then work your way up.

I decided I wanted to play guitar, so I went and bought that Ironbird in my first post. That was my first guitar. I wanted it, I wanted to play, so I went and bought it.

I'm glad I didn't take a half step with something cheaper. If your budget allows you to go higher up, I say do it.

If you've got something half decent now (and your Jackson looks alright), I'd even suggest you hold off until you can get something more than just 'the next step up'.

The differences in quality are there, so it's worth spending the money.

Having said that, you could have the best guitar in the world... but if you have a rubbish amp or nasty effects... you'll still sound horrible.

Thanks for the advice man.  I've considered exactly what you said about buying a really good guitar, I just can't afford it since I only work during the summer when I'm home and not at school.

I love my guitar. I think it was a great investment.  I went with it instead of some really cheap guitar (less than $100).

Right now, I'm playing on a 10 watt Marshall with a Digitech Death Metal distortion pedal.  I've been thinking of upgrading equipment before actually buying another guitar (or buying both at the same time)

I started on a plastic strung POS spanish acoustic, then a borrowed really nasty cheap strat copy with a manky home-made amp. learnt alot playing both guitars, both sounded horrible.

after about 200 hours of pot-washing in a local hotel I had the £280 for my late-70s LP (£280 was a real bargain even then. bought it from martin glover while he was working with alien sex fiend, he musta been broke at the time, or high :D)

another 100h of pot washing and waiting and I had a 1971 marshall 50w 2x12, a boss chorus pedal and a cry baby wahwah, all really tatty but finally the sound was pretty close to the sound in my head :aok

edit: theres alot to be said for learning on rubbish gear, if you can get a half-decent sound out of a bad guitar, it really comes together when you finally get something good :)

The Electro-Harmonix 'Metal Muff' is pretty awesome. I use that with a BOSS ME-50 (which I just use as a tuner and for delay now... the distortion is a bit limp-wristed). It's cheap too.

In your situation I'd be inclined to go with a better amp rather than another guitar. You could even put a better pick-up in your Jackson to get a better tone out of it.

Try and get yourself a nice tube combo amp. Your sound will improve so much more going that way. I don't know what your options would be over there but a 30w all-tube combo would be killer.

This is what I use at home:

It's more than enough for home use, you could gig with it, (my brother has) and it just sounds sooooooo much better than any 10w amp ever could.

a Really good guitar?

I have a 1991 Rickenbacker 4001CS (Chris Squire limited edition signature series), a 2004 Hamer B12M Medium Scale 12-string Bass, a 2008 Birdsong shortscale hand-built Corto Bass.  Together the value of these three instruments alone is $10,000.

The bass guitar that gets the most compliments, and the one my bandmates want me to play over all the others is a Jay Turser (importer) copy of a Hofner Beatle bass built in China with unidentifed wood.  I bought it on Ebay for $199

Go figure....

Not trying to somber this up as it's good memories for me.  My late son Andrew was never going to be a ball player like I was in school.  He'd have happily sat at the computer or done nothing most days when he was in Middle School.  I finally forced the issue and said he had to do something and we agreed, him grudgingly on the guitar.   We then looked for lessons and a not real expensive electric guitar and he ended up with a Squire Strat.

Well he got really lucky and had a great teacher, and the more he learned the more he loved it and by the time he was in high school he'd gotten pretty good.  He'd also figured out that show up with an electric guitar and folks pay attention, including the girls if you can play.

It also kept us talking through the typical Dad knows nothing ages of 14-18 as we could always talk music and guitars.  As with everything I want to know the history so we learned about the old blues players the background on the electric guitar.  He at first was a Jimmy Page fanatic so it had to be a Les Paul.  That was out of the price range but there was an Epiphone Les Paul that we could manage to the Squire got traded in with a few more bucks for that.

That worked for a bit, but Muddy Waters took hold with his Red Telecaster.  Then he found out that Jimmy Page started with a Tele along with folks like James Burton and Albert Lee and the Telecaster went front and center.  Again it was to scrape up the money and trade in the Epiphone for the holy grail, which was an American made Fender Telecaster.

Oh how he loved that guitar and oh how he could make it sing.  There were times wher he'd drift off while playing and what he could do with it was magic.  Yeah I know I was his Dad, but folks who heard him knew it too.

His playing inspired a friend of his little sister to learn.  He idolized Drew and his guitar playing.  When Andy and Chris died in 2005 the Guitar sat in it's case in Drew's room, probably my most prized possession of his.  At my daughter's wedding this summer I asked that friend of Christina's to play Drew's Tele at the wedding and he did a masterful job including some impromtu Blues at the bride's father's request.  It's the only time that Tele has been played since Drew died.

It depends on how you like to play, I suppose. I find the Jumbo frets a great asset to my playing and would never go back, but that's just me.

The whole feel of the RR3 is just something special, though. The neck is just perfect for metal... I never understood why people banged on about necks so much until I played my Jackson.

It was a  :O moment, for sure.

as much as i love mine, the neck hurts my left hand these days.. its just too thin. the neck on my peavey raptor is more comfortable...shame everything else about it is toejam. needs better hardware and a setup to be any good.
