Remove Aces High and then add it in again.  This is not a fault of Aces High, rather it is the fault of the firewall software you are using.  Personally, I think most software firewalls are redundant, as I would rather spend a few bucks (less than 20) on a router that provides firewall functions at the hardware level just so I won't run into these kinds of problems.  Most people already connect through a router anyway (many broadband modems *ARE* routers) and just don't know any better.

A little bit of basic research will fix all of your problems.

If you are truly leaving because of this, then don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I have un-installed AH and downloaded it 3 times without the firewall...Oh and thanks for your heart felt concern, "then don't let the door hit you on the way out"..That was quite helpful....

He didnt mean uninstall AH and reinstall. He meant to remove the permissions to allow AH through the firewall, then put them back in. This needs to be done after every patch session. Rationale behind it is, the previous AH install was allowed past the firewall to connect to game. The NEW version generally doesn't pick up the previous permission, but they remain there. If you remove them, and reallow AH through the firewall, all should be well.

The problem is definitely with the patch....

I disabled the windows firewall, added the ports to the router - again.
Training Arena works, other arenas don't!

This means its definitely a patch problem.

definitely a patch problem ....that hit only you? The 600-700 people playing last night seemed to get in/on ok.

I think other people also had problems... i've seen another post saying so.

I just checked and i see i get like 350 ping instead of the usual 200...
something most have been done by the patch, i was flying just a day before that.

I was having connection troubles too... and they were completely unrelated to AH, but some laggy hops on the internet data route.  Pure coincidence.

1> I'm not talking about downloading it without the firewall.  I'm talking about allowing it access through the firewall AFTER it is installed.  I'm also not talking about "windows firewall" so much as firewalls that other programs create (mcaffee, norton, firealarm, etc...) those are simply junk and cause nothing but problems, especially for those who don't understand how it all works.

2> You wanted sympathy?  Is that what this is about?  "Oh whoa is me... please pity me... I can't connect... I am threatening my $15/month for HiTech to fix something that is ABSOLUTELY NOT THEIR FAULT!  Wah Wah..."  Sorry you won't get that from me.  If you want to quit.. then quit..  if you don't then don't threaten it.  You can't try to bluff and then refuse to show your hand when called on it.  All that does is lose you respect.

I have never had ANY trouble getting patches and updates, or running the game...EVER.  My router is my firewall, although the Windows firewall is set to allow aceshigh through.  Maybe you're not running it as administrator, or you have some odd anti-virus or third party software firewall, or some other windows security setting is causing problems.  Like was already said, the hundreds of other people flying around would indicate the issue is yours, not HTC's.  And I also agree if anyone is so quick to blame HTC for something that seems to be a local issue and threatens to cancel their subscription, then I also say "Buh-bye, we really don't need you".  HTC has some of the best tech support around, if you haven't even made an attempt to get their help, then again..."Buh-bye".

even so, it's much more likely that your connection just got bad. A heavy rain storm can cause trouble in hops down the line, and with a 200 ping my guess is you have plenty of hops that can get messed up. Don't panic. If you KNOW (this means you've tested everything you can on your computer and internet connection from your end) give it a day or so and it may clear up. If you can't wait, call your ISP and have them check it.

I think this post is getting abit out of topic...
Obviously i didnt post this thread but i am also having trouble, and no i cant wait because i also think AH is great  :D

Im just looking to find the problem before i contact my ISP as it will be difficult explaining the problem without pinpointing the source.
maybe i did something wrong with my router?

I did port forwarding to these ports -
2000-7000(seen these ports on some other thread)
On both UDP and TCP.
ports are forwarded to my PC IP address which is given by the DHCP of the router.

i have no 3rd party firewall, the only firewall is the windows firewall which is disabled for these tests.
Also i don't beleive its a permission issue as im the administrator on my PC and its windows XP which rules out the UAC problems.

I much appriciate any help!
Thanks

It sounds like your end is ok, the next step is to run the pingplotter program to the game servers. Have it ping every second for about 10 minutes and post the results. This will tell us if your getting out of your router ok and if so where the issue might be starting.

We have no control over firewalls or how they block the game from Internet access.

I can tell you with many software firewalls, the databases will get corrupt, over time, and the only way to fix it is to remove the firewall software from the computer and do a fresh install of it.  Norton is particularly bad about this.

If the firewall is in a router, rebooting (better yet, power cycle) the router will usually clear up the problem.

This is not a game issue and there is nothing we can do about how these programs impact our game.

after the latest patch i could not get on either. unfortunately, i didn't write down the error messages to send to skuzzy. i tried multiple times with different settings to no avail. firewall wasn't a problem, neither was anti-virus. finally i just went to plan C. i renamed my aces high folder and did a full download and install and then copied the files i needed over to the Aces high folder. everything worked out fine and i was up and running in a short time. i hope this helps some of you!

i run windows 7-32bit, 1Tb raid 0, I7-266, 6gigs of ram, ati4890 video, full tower

This I can believe.  If the game ever exits abnormally, there is always a chance a configuration file could get corrupted.

If you are getting to the login screen, it is doubtful that a firewall is the issue.  If you are getting passed the login screen, it is doubtful it is a firewall issue.

A firewall blocking the game would cause the game to prompt for an alternate route BEFORE displaying the login dialog box.

its definitly not a firewall issue...
I'm getting into the arenas but the roster refresh time is real low, and after few seconds i get a message saying host has disconnected.

The wierd thing is that in the TA i have no problem....

The bigger arenas have more data to send to send to your computer and packet loss or long delays would cause a boot to the desktop.

Try running a Ping Plot to 206.16.60.38 and see if there is an issue between your computer and the servers.

Also, a DXDIAG output might be helpful as well, in case it is a local issue.

Airwolf if you can't resolve your issue here on the bbs you might try calling or emailing HTC directly. They have probably the greatest customer service out there, and will try to help you resolve your issue.

It would help if you had a dxdiag and a pingplot ready also.

Dxdiag - go to start button, click on run, type dxdiag and hit enter. Save the info and paste the first 3rd on the boards.

Pingplotter - available here (look for the freeware version) http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html (http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html)

Install, and run against the ip 206.16.60.38. (let it run for a few mins to get a good feel for whats going on between you and the AH Servers). Once done, grab a screenie, push it onto a hosting service, and put it up on here.

It's working!

Maybe it's the new patch, I don't know...
Also the ingame updater/downloader is now also working properly for me.

Seems everything is fixed! :)

Obviously this still needs testing, crossing finguers!

Thanks HC and anyone who helped.

First off I have to apologize.  I thought you were the original poster who was 'deleting their account' because they couldn't get past their firewall.  (If you ARE BERN and logging in through an alternate account then I retract that apology)

Secondly I never called you an 'old fool'.  On the contrary, I thought I was talking to a young boy.

I take personal offense to people who threaten to quit because of some stupid problem.  Regardless, it is most likely a problem on your end, because 99.9% of us are able to log on with no problems whatsoever.  In any case, if you don't like what I have to say then just ignore me.  There are plenty of other people in this thread helping you out here.  I do have to say that I am quite impressed that I don't see one single misplaced apostrophe in your post!

Having same problem.  Logged on to fly scenario, and got locked up. That sucks.

I can open the game, but clicking any arena or offline flight causes a complete freeze on my system.

It is obvious that whatever you guys are doing with this patch is not going to work with my system any longer.  I have worked with you to fix this issue since the initial update...posting dxdiags and screenshots for hours....  When you rolled it back, everything worked fine.

Now, instead of "aces high has stopped working" upon opening the game (which was the problem before, until rollback) ...I can open the game, but then completely freezes my system, the second I try to enter an arena. I can do nothing after it freezes other than reset the power now. I've downloaded it 3 times, and keep getting that the video8 file is corrupt, as well, even after running chkdsk.

I have tried downloading the game as a patch, and as a full install.  I have shut off the firewall, even though it lets me get to log-on screens. I have done a complete diagnostic on my system, and it is clean.  I'm running 18 processes at start up.  RAM is clean, over 1,200MB available.

I can talk to people in the arenas from the lobby.  Really really frustrating.  Obviously mine is one of very few that are having this issue.  Well, I guess mine will no longer be an issue.

Thank you for the 9 odd years of enjoyment, plus the time on Airwarrior.  Perhaps it truly is time to grow up out of this hobby anyway.  I will be canceling this subscription on Monday.  :salute to all.

Hmm, i run Norton on my desktop, and have had 0 issues with it or and game installs....

But i guess im also the more tech savvy people in my area lol... my only thing against norton is that its a Resource Hog. it hogs resources more than any other program i use...

This happens more often than anyone can imagine.  We get all the blame for the stupidity of software firewall issues.  Norton is the worst, McAfee is not much better.  Even Zone-Alarm has the same problem.

Skuzzy,

Ok, I don't know why this patch had any effect on my graphics card settings, but it did.  The old version did not, and when it was rolled back, everything was fine for the game.  I did not change a thing, same drivers, same everything between patches.

New patch somehow changed all the settings on my card, specific to running AH2.  This has never happened on a patch update to me, so..  don't know how, don't know why, but after reapplying all the proper settings I can get the game to run normal.  Funny thing is, the second you rolled the version back, everything was fine.

I was out of ideas and figured I would just look in the NVIDIA settings.  Just an FYI.

(Nvidia 7600 GTS,  Driver: nv4_dsp.dll version 6.14.0012.6658 (1/7/2011))

The 7600GT cards are getting very long in the tooth.  I have one in my work computer and I no longer run with "Detailed Terrain" checked as the frame rate bogs down too much when there is a lot of activity in the area.

The game really does not have the ability to change video settings on its own.  It will disable advanced options if the frame rate drops too low, for too long.

Not everyone will have the problem, but when it happens, the only way to fix it is to remove the software and reinstall it again.

Vista has more bugs, related to the use of Norton, than there are Legos in Legoland.  Norton did some really nasty things to Vista.  Not that Vista was ever a solid product, but Norton took the problems to a new high.
