How could you know if you don't play...you'd be surprised how the average level progressed lately! In any case the only way to know would be to make them duel with the current top sticks :joystick:

I play. I don't think average level is any different.
And the specific question wording is most respected. That's not necessarily top-most. E.G. Manx wasn't one of the best, but he was a pretty respectable stick and character.

You're not asking about the average skill level, you're asking about people who fly so well that they earn your respect. At that level, I strongly doubt that the best pilots from a number of years ago would play worse than the best pilots today unless there have been major changes to the flight model. Angles are angles, energy is energy, and ACM are ACM - these fundamentals don't change. If anything, I saw NathBDP do things years ago in a 190 that I still haven't seen replicated in any films from the last six or seven years.
Now, factor in the severe rust factor for those older pilots, and clearly the current players have a competitive edge. But we're not factoring rust into the equation I assume?
For me, I had a lot of respect for pilots who gave it their best and were willing to mix it up. Skill wasn't really that big of deal to me, particularly when I was running the BKs and looking for potential recruits. People who earned my respect showed that they didn't take the game too seriously. They demonstrated this by flying with reckless abandon against improbable odds, and they did this with good, playful attitudes. Guys like Morpheus, Stang, Furball, Slapshot, Hub, Superdud, Guppy, etc. really exemplified that philosophy to me.

I always thought of OlDemon as a good fight not a whiner till I reversed him in his 51 one day and he started crying about it on 200, I was actually quite surprised by his whining.
JB11 I forgot about him, he definitely will give a good fight and not whine if he dies.

totally agree. I had my first encounter with him today. First round was his, second mine. A simple sale after each match. He lures you in until you can't escape and then you must fight for your life.

Norrowing it down to a definitive 3 is a difficult question. I suppose taking out side switchers might help my selection.

nothing personal against you icepac but hate statements like this as the definition of a horde is pretty much whatever you want it to be. I have many times been told that I was hording somebody when there was 3 on 1 and only because we killed his 5 friends before and he was the last of a 6v3 fight :D.

I know alot of great sticks in this game, and picking out just 3 of them is not easy.
But I guess my list would be something like this.. In random order, because I can't tell wich is the better stick of these..

I have not actually fought Grizz that much, but I can sure tell from the few fights we have had that he really knows his stuff.. :old: Meaning that I usually come down as a pile of woodsticks.. :noid So I respect him because of that. :salute
I respect Bighorn because he can turnfight like no one else I've seen. And he's a great trainer. :salute
And nrshida is another great turnfighter, but he gets my respect because he never ho, and he always puts up a great and usually long lasting fight.
He fights for the quality fight and not so much for the kill at any cost, and that makes the whole fight so much more worth the while no matter what the outcome would be. And we have had ALOT of great fights together. :salute

Where are you guys actually getting decent fights that show the skill of other players? It's usually only 5-10 seconds of fighting before others join in the fight. It's been a long time since I've had a good, prolonged turnfight with anybody. There's very little advanced ACM involved in the fights I see.

Since I normally spend most of my time in the TA, I only get to spar with those that show up around my training times. Or those that I run into in FSO. Guys who I highly respect as far as 1v1 duels are quite a bit more then 3. I feel bad listing only 3, But as far as those I see regularly.
1. Bighorn (I'll keep his current alias under wraps). Always a push to the limit first bobble loses fight.
2. Batfink (always fun, and interesting fights, aim is much better then mine)
3. Delirium (great stick, absolute killer if gets an E advantage)

Never got the chance to go F4U vs F4U against MtnMan, I'll put that on my wishlist before leaving this game.

Wow. I can't believe I got mentioned in one of these threads especially as little as I get to play these days. I'm honored but really I'm only average.

JUGgler - always beats me with a lesser plane...two broken joysticks, one set of headphones (threw those at the dog and missed), one shredded mouse, and a hammered Logitech video camera later and I still can't beat the guy.
Kappa - Screw it...
Tongs - Best fight I ever had...started at 16K and ended up on the deck...he just happened to auger first...but I was right behind him. 4.5 mins of nausea, followed by involuntary muscle contractions in my wrist then an underwear change.
Sunsfan - I feel foolish when I think I got him, lmao! It never ends up that way...ever....not one time.
Dedalos - took a virtual belt and beat me with it in the DA 31 times straight....no BS...I have no idea why I kept the videos. I watched them for two days...fought him again and lost 21 times straight...so I got that going for me and that's awesome
DrBone - I'll never ever forget this one...he's on the water in the DA in a Spit 9...he's killed 5 guys already and he's floundering around forcing overshoots, outturning, you know the routine...being ganged like a prison-beeyatch...he killed me 4 times...I actually had time to reup 4 times and the kooks, divejockeys, turdhuggers and altfairies in the DA never killed the guy. It was completely obscene...then, as we are all reupping, you see his red dot flying back to the base to NOT land his feast of window-licking, short-bus riders. After that little bonanza, I punched my boss, beat my kids, shaved my head and quit for a month. He probably quit for a week too...he must have been absolutely shocked at the lack of skill assembled in one place. Talk about facepalm.
CorkyJr - Every damn time I try a new plane I run into him...and I go running back to the Spit...and still lose. Geezus....

Heh..there is only ONE true "villain" that I remember trying to kill and dieing repeatedly to more than once, Shane. I still remember, correct me if I'm wrong, when he was an avid 51 stick..then went to the lala7 and proceeded to tuant, and bait one sucker after another to go at him. I think I gave him a decent turn fight ONCE in my "prime"... I still died <S> Shane.
Fun times.

Most of the guys mentioned don't fly buffs, maybe you should try fighting against other fighters?
This tour I am concentrating on killing super high altitude buffs and hunting people who leave the map because my time in the arena is mostly away from keyboard climbs with me returning to find high buffs or myself off the map out of fuel.
While I am away from the keyboard, I am designing and testing engine and boost management systems I build in my home shop.
You have to mix it up to keep things fresh after 17 years of arena flying and I doubt that you will fly the types of missions you do now once you reach that level of experience.

kermit - he taught me how to fly and i put up a great fight but i have only killed him a handful of times hehe. i miss my frog friend :(
kappa - the bastage is always finding me and killing me no matter what country i am flyin on at the time!
levi - never stood a chance against him ever! but i sure did try. i loved the fights i had with him in the old donut FT map!
morpheus - he was a great fight and always stomped me but it was fun.
jaxxo - no matter how many drinks he has had...he will still kick my arse!
stang - he is always a great fight even though i die and he is a spit dweeb! lol

I'd put Kappa and Grizz up there with me too, but it's been a few tours at least since I've been shot down by either of 'em... Both are deadly and can take me out easily, I just seem to have gotten lucky at avoiding them. :noid

Tongs – he’ll always “have a dip”. No matter what E state he’s at or what his own situation is, he’ll chase you and go at you without reservation. And win lose or draw, he’ll salute you and move on. Tongs will always “drop the shoulder” and have a decent scrap.
Steely – for exactly the reasons above.
Ink – for the above and his complete disregard for anything apart from throwing himself at you with everything he has. Nothing held back.
The person to be feared is the one who will go straight for the throat. The 3 above will never be number one not because of their lack of ability, but because they’re far too busy giving it 110%.
I respect the ubercrew who work the angles, weigh up the situation, commit and finish it off with superb gunnery. I fear (in game) the Aces High Visigoth with above average skills who just wants to kill you when they see you and commits to “death or glory”. Large difference.
You can fight uphill against a superb stick and lose, but that doesn’t invoke fear because the Math was completed before they even engaged. You’re just the end of the equation. Fear (virtual) is fighting in the unknown zone and finding the “other guy” knows what he’s doing and doesn’t give a toss about the outcome.

Too many good sticks to name them all. Just trying to think of the guys who I've run into down low in planes that normally wouldn't be found down low.
Haven't seen him in a while, but OlDemon and I had some knock down drag out fights 38G vs 51D on the deck. BigR is really something in a 51 down low too.
Haven't run into him in a while, but Agent360 in a low 109K made for great fun. Bunnies has taken that spot lately as we seem to show up at the same alt in the same place.
JUGgler in his D-25, in particular when that was all he was in, is a great fight. He bends the 47 better then most, in particular since the 56th guys haven't been around much. LilMak bends a Jug well too
Of course there are a lot of guys that kill me really fast too. Too many respected baduns to name them all
