I'm starting my own accounting service business called "Resolve Accounting". I got an email account setup and went to design a business card. The card asked for a logo. I sure don't know how to do that. Any help?
Thanks!

Contact a graphic artist and Pay for one since it represents your Business as your branding.

good luck on getting that free unless its a family member. Type only logos which is basically just your company name typed out may cost you $75-100, for a real deal logo you may find someone that will do it as cheap as $300 but can cost as much as 2k. I wouldn't think your looking for something that crazy but it all depends on the artist. Also take it serious and get someone that knows what their doing, not your neighbor that has some graphic program and make s family calender. You want it to be recognizable not look like a 3rd grader did it and have it available in every digital format known to man. also make sure it looks good in black in white. a lot of people get logo with lots of color and shadows then the first time they make a photo copy or a black and white print out you have a giant black blob that was a logo.

Or the majority of us in this community that are a bit more constructive and/or creative can give him a head start so he doesn't need to waste his money on something he doesn't have to, yet...
How elaborate of a logo are you trying to create Getback? A company logo can range from a symbol to a contemporary rendering of the company's initials to a contemporary rendering that includes the entire company's name (a scripted or calligraphic "Resolve Accounting") and maybe also a logo or theme ontop of it. Since you're in more of a "financial management" than creative or artistic consulting business, I'd initially assume you don't want your company/logo to come off as "stale" or "dull" but you also don't want to be over-the-top or "unprofessional", to come off as being well-grounded, responsible, trustworthy, etc..

If homemade will do, there: (http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/1640/nayttokuva20110328kohte.png) (http://img824.imageshack.us/i/nayttokuva20110328kohte.png/)

Simple. I just don't know where to start. What program can I use?

Not bad! Let me think upon it.

do you have any basic ideas fleshed out?
I use paintshop and photoshop. I think Gimp might have some basic graphic capability.
If you're just looking for a couple of styled letters as a logo head over to dafont.com, browse the fonts, and install them on your machine (I can help you with that if necessary).
I like that one Mr Ripley
-
I'm a beggar here so it's hard for me to be picky. I like Mr. Ripley's. I just need to absorb it from a customer's point of view and is it saying the right thing. The cold blue is perfect. Shows some seriousness. Also I see some focus in that symbol. What bothers me a tad is how the upper R promotes the letter "D". Not sure how to address that.

You can can design your own with software like Photoshop Elements.
Easy to do.. Here's an example, in JPG format. The original is a multi-layer TIF, which allows it to be printed on any color card stock without the white box being visible..

Tac you mind if I think your logo is insanely original? I took a couple minutes to redo another version if you don't mind:

EDIT: Don't pay 500$ for a business card design unless your company is becoming big... it takes no more than 15-30min for a professional to make one if he is inspired. A programmer friend of mine found an app for his phone that used photos taken from his phone and compare them on the web in seconds to find its source (A bit like the app that analsyses ambient music to find the soundtrack title...). Turns out a lot of graphic artists are VERY LAZY!!! :bolt:

looks like the community has come through yet again Getback!!!

LOL...Ask him what is his intent with the LOGO...
What type of media is it going to reproduced on?
Only B/C?
How about letterhead?
EPS?
Direct Mail?
brochures?
what color of paper?
What type of paper?
is he willing to pay for 2 color printing vs 1 color?
Is is going to be reproduced on a Digital copier?
or a real printing press?
What is the logo supposed to tell the customer?
I gave my first impressions of what those Logos looked like...What they said to a potential customer.
ask the right questions as a Graphic designer would ....... Good luck with your new business...:)

I don't do logos much
There are just so many formats possible... everything needs to just "Click"
We also need much more precise info... like you just said

I think if you changed the background "shield" turn it upside down it would really look like a "shield" it would have a good subliminal message, "shield" protection.

Nah it doesn't really work... Besides, the shield is supposed to look like an "A"...

There you go. Now you've thrown out some things to consider instead of being condescending.
Edit: Wait.. was he being condescending. I'm a bit slow on the uptake sometimes.

So we live in a world of no Criticism? all we do is beyond reproach? Really?
Plus I made the point that It takes more than some illustrator skills to create a Logo that works For the company and the mediums its intended for.
-
Kamori is correct, these are too flashy. You want something elegant and professional, not something that looks like it could be the shield in an RPG. That isn't to take a shot at the work above me, it looks nice, I just don't think it works for an accounting business.
Take a look at what others are doing to give you an idea of just how simple this needs to be. I think a lot of people get caught up in elaborate logo design when it's really over kill.

I guess... (http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n150/lepape/Resolve-Accounting3.jpg)
The only paper you will keep that look and expectation will be on a Cast coated or hi-gloss sheet. You will loose the gradient effect between the blue and Black to the right and left of the center.
If this is intended to go on a UN-coated sheet then no less than 15% on the smallest dot and no more than 85% on the darkest part of the screen. All of the 100% lines need to be a separate layer as to keep it from being screened in the process of going to press. Unless you create different versions for un-coated and coated print.
If this goes to a Digital(copier) then it will become grainy and reproduction will not be what you are seeing.
The best color for paper will be white all others will begin to ruin the effect of the logo...
P.S. This will have to be 175 line screen or better to come close to what your looking at..That transulates to a Higher end press and your customer will not pay for the reproduction of this logo.

Been doing this since 1989... It takes a greater understanding of what paper and process its intended for to do this effectivly

Criticism without direct and clear explanations of the reasons behind them are just argumentative statements and have no basis in fact that the creator can adjust to. Constructive criticism helps so long as it's based in fact and not in opinion. Or are we dealing in opinion and not fact? Something that appeals to me might not appeal to you.
That said if you have a general expertise in this field please feel free to HELP a fellow member of this community in their endeavors.
I mean, seriously, isn't that one of the coolest byproducts of being a member of this game, community, and board? Being able to post a request for assistance and getting real expertise in the discipline? *shrug* Just thinking out loud here.

Spit the truth brother, many times I've made something I thought looked totally balls to the wall awesome, and it did...in photoshop. Transferring to real media is a pain and can really take a lot out of good work, not to mention the expense/practicality.
Of course now that I've done some banter it's only fair for my work to be put on the cross as well. I'm not saying you should use this, or even that it's good at all, just that it really doesn't have to be any more extravagant.

Pretty shoddy, but makes the point.

i gave him simple 1 color AI files, who ever he forwards it to it will be very easy for them to change any colors and work with. Heck if he can get ahold of Illustrator you can add a gradient and shadow if he'd like and it could really pop. I just don't have the time to really do much, i do design and prepress now so my time is usually full unless someone no shows like today.

Yeah whiteman yours was good, but you don't need my reaffirmation considering you're far more experienced than me :lol.

Was in the graphics / Business Forms business for over 30 years.
Accounting firm with a "too fancy" logo will not go over all that well.
Would you rather have your accountant be plain and simple or colorful? Many people read the logo as a "personality" of the firm.
Plain and simple works best for that industry / profession. Black & White Logo on a simple Classic Crest paper stock.
Same for the legal profession.
My 2 cents,
NwBie
