I absolutely love all animals, I have far more respect for animals then most people...with animals you always know what you are dealing with, an Alligator isnt gonna pretend to be your friend to get close then eat you..he is gonna try to eat ya period.  people on the other hand, come to you with a smile all the while holding a dagger behind there back.

Cool pets, I just couldn't ever justify putting a infant that close to a wild animal even under my supervision though.

Title: Re: Alligator and other pets..lots of pics

like I said with animals you know what they are.....and absolutely no the gator never got used to me he hated me, :rofl he actually almost ripped my finger off the day I gave him to a reptile sanctuary, the snake im holding with my daughter was a very calm snake, and I'm not dumb I never let it's head get close to her with out me holding it..as a matter of fact she got so mad at me because she wanted to pet his head and I wouldn't let her :rofl  she really got mad it was quite funny...and she is a very healthy 17 year old now :D   and trust me I was far faster then that snake :aok

if you look at the pic were i'm petting the Gators belly
, to the left of me is the water part of the pit...and there are 5 caiman in it, one of which I ate. and on the other side you can see in the Tank an absolute monster of a python, that was 14 foot long.

I don't have any more animals, just a bunch of kids  :rofl  as my family grew the animals became less and less, not for any reason except it cost a lot of money for the feeding and up keep of them, this is actually a very small portion of the animals I've owned.

when I had that first tat shop I went through 2,000 gold fish a week, 15 rats a month, about 10 rabbits a month, I seriously spent about 300 a day for the up keep.

once most of the kids get older I will get back into it, I want to open a reptile sanctuary, my favorite are the monitor lizards which I have no pictures of the ones Ive owned :(
but on a guess I would say 30 plus Monitor lizards through out the years, mostly water monitors, they are truly awesome creatures that can be as tame as a dog, although not in the same sense of a dog, it wont come to you when ya call it, but they will most often with a lot of handling when they are young, will totally get used to being held.

of the top of my head the list of animals Ive owned

Alligators (bit me, almost lost a finger to one)
Caiman (very vicious)
lots of Water Monitor's  (can be tamed with lots of handling, many bites from these)
lots of Nile monitors (can be extremely vicious been bit so many times by these)  :rofl
savanna monitors  (easiest to tame, only bit by infants)
indicus monitors  (real docile)
tegu monitors   (vicious)
golden tegu's  (very difficult to tame, lots of bites from these guys)
black and white Tegu's (tame as they get older)
bearded dragons
iguanas
ball python's
Burmese python's Lots of these (been bit a few times)
African rock python's
tree boa's (not really handleable they have fangs like a viper except instead of one set they have 3)
Colombian Boa's (Bunch of these, bit a few times)
lots of scorpion's
tarantula's, pink toe and rose hair mostly
so many different types of fish  literally thousands of them (my favorite are the piranha's, and yes been bit by the piranha's :rofl)
alligator snapping turtles
common snapping turtles, one of them was a giant that was easy 60+lbs
ferrets (stinky suckers)
moray eels (my favorite salt water creature)

I think that's about it, except the typical dogs.

I've always figured there's a special level of hell reserved for those that keep wild animals as pets.

I love animals, but dangerous animals? Think I'll pass.

Love the photos though, beautiful animals. Was really enjoying the photos untill the Red Bellied cmae up. That made me shive. Went swimming in a river where they were (Didn't know, guide 'neglected' to tell us) and one of my mates got a nip as he came out. Even to this day they are the scariest animals I have seen. Even after I went fishing for them, I still think they are scary.

There is a special level of hell just for those Red Bellies <Shiver>

piranha's are no different then any other animal, they are the rivers clean up crew, or the wolves of the river, they mainly attack the sick fish.  trust me their are far more aggressive fish then Piranha's :aok   people who live in the country they come from swim with them every day :aok Piranha's are actually very shy fish. until they have fry...then don't go near them they will attack anything. (fry are young)

Lol, in this free country you cannot have a fish in an aquarium?  :lol  It is elegal in Texas.  California you can have them with a permit.

no where as far as I know are Piranhas illegal...snakeheads which I have owned many, they outlawed them a few years ago, peaple bought them not realizing how big they will get then throw them in the rivers, and now there is a huge problem in Florida and surrounding states from them taking over the river systems and eating every thing.

as far as a "special level of hell" well I laughed my butt off on those comments...my animals where very well taking cared of, if I do go to hell it certainly wont be for the animals i've owned :aok

thanx every one else :aok

I did not know there was a fresh water Barracuda ....
pretty bad bellybutton huh...you should see them up close wicked teeth :rock  but technically they are not "barracuda" that is the common name for selling purposes, although they look very similar to the salt water barracuda.

Please don't get me wrong. I understand the use of Piranha's, but they are still damn evil. Every thing about them emits EVIL! Look at the way they are built! Its a giant hold for lots of sharp teeth!

When I said that they will go to hell, it is not due to how you take care of them. I believe that you take the best care of your animals, and looking at the gators, they seem happy enough. Every animal in the pictures shown is happy, with the exception of the Red Belly, which appears to be saying 'KIIIILLLLLLLL'  :P

Nice pics though, I'll just keep a damn good distance from those Red Bellies.  :aok

Free Country with rules.  No rules and there would be no FREE country.

Really funny though that the state that does not allow their people to protect themselves will allow them to have piranha. I guess they feel they can account for each fish with a permit but not each weapon.

Ink years back I had a friend that owned several aquarium stores. There were many times that some outsiders tried to smuggle piranha into the country in his shipments and the contraband found. This was many years ago but I can see why. There is always some idiot that gets tired of his toy/pet/whatever that just dumps it into some river. The laws were to protect other from those types.

I personally have no issue with piranha as they are really interesting and fun to watch feed.  Really powerful jaws. I do have a problem with folks who do not take care of thier pets though.

I don't think the permit is there to account for each fish.  It's there to justify a few more government employees to process the permit and collect the fees (if any are charged).  The permit may also impose a feeling of being tracked/watched, which may prevent the fish from being dumped into local waterways when they're no longer wanted.

If the permit were really about the fish there would be minimum housing and care requirements, inspections, annual reports to complete, etc...

Ahhh, yeah.  We need more rules and more taxes.  Only then we will be really free.  I am sure Gaddafi said the same things  :rofl  No one said anything about no rules.  Just no useless stupid rules  :P

Ok. Maybe evil is a bad choice.

Badprettythang.

I love animals as well, and with lots of differant animals around (none as exotic as yours) I can tell a happy and contented animal as oppossed to one that is mistreated. Yours are a fine bunch, and you should be proud as to how well you have worked with them.

Still dislike Piranhas though. Agree to disagree?  :aok

You can legally have guns in California, and shoot them too (first hand experience with both).

thank you :salute

im tellin ya if you could watch how they treat their young you would be amazed, it reminds me of the crocadillians that are so viscous but yet will break open the eggs and carry around there young on their backs, the piranhas will nudge their young into safety if they think a threat is around, male and female both tend to the young.
I do understand some people are afraid of animals like this..IE sharks and crocs, snakes, there is no reason to fear or dislike if "fear" is wrong...its like when you hear people say that snakes are bad and slimey and gross....or whatever they say....I actually had a neighbor call the cops over the gators and piranha's, the cop that showed up was blown away by my "pit" and said he will never have an issue with me and my animals.    but ya we most certainly can agree to disagree...I just hope you read what I say and realize that piranha's are a creature just like the wolf..they really are...they don't attack healthy animals generally, its the sick and diseased, they are just the clean up crew so to speak... :salute

I have had several piranhas over the years.  1 black and several reds.  The black didn't live very long unfortunately.  I had a red that was several years old but never got bigger than a small bluegill/sunfish.  I decided to get him a "buddy".  Purchased another red less than half his size.  The old boy was very docile (I would pet him when I cleaned the tank) so I assumed the baby would be fine.  He was fine alright.......Woke up one morning and the big guy was missing bits off of his tail.  Next day, a little more off the tail.  By day 3 the big guy was a swimming head.  Still alive but nothing left behind the pectoral fins.
That baby red belly ended up being 10 inches long and close to 3 pounds before he died.  He was trained at feeding time too.  If his light came on AND the lid opened he would slink up to the surface and lurk.  And soon as the goldfish touched the water there was a splash and a cloud of scales.  He wasn't aggressive but wasn't keen on me cleaning his tank either.  I got many a tail slap from him when I got close with the siphon.  He allowed me to pet him after he ate though.
When it come to teeth though the reds have nothing on a black.  Those chompers look like a bear trap. But blacks don't seem to have a very good survival rate in a tank.  No one I have known that owned a black had it live more than a few months.

black piranha's require a bigger tank and are far more temperamental to water condition's, the reds get half the size of blacks, but are considered far more "dangerous" to humans, there have been many accounts of reds attacking and even eating people(but the full eating of people is very very rare I think only one known), I don't believe an attack by blacks has ever been recorded.

believe it or not there are over 20 species of piranha's..only 5 considered "dangerous" to humans.

I am aware of that ink, but I appreciate the input none the less.  Here locally, when I had the piranhas only reds and blacks were available.  Now you can't find blacks for sale.  The only shop that had them when I kept fish like that was a little one-horse operation that closed down years ago.  Also, I was in high school when I had my piranhas.  I have seen a couple adult blacks which is where the "bear trap" analogy is from.  Although they have a nasty set when they are small too.
I find it funny when people think reds look "vicious".  Put a red next to a Pacu and they look alike until the red opens his mouth...and the Pacu will get to be over 100 pounds or more of fat, lazy vegetarian fish.
I would like to get into exotics again but the wife gets skittish around stuff like that.  It's a blast to take her into the bat flyway at the zoo.  She does a great vanishing act in there. :rofl

Ink, great collection of creatures you have had.  Nothing like learning what diet and on the living condition they thrive.

I lived with one of my high school friends after college.  He had a 80 gallon salt water tank.  He had a Moray and a Lion fish living in the tank.  He would put a dozen or so gold fish in their to feed.  The Moray would go crazy on the fish.  Every once in a while, a gold fish would live a week or so in the salt water with an eel chasing it around.

Holy cow Ink! I've always wanted to go gator hunting, which isn't exactly what you are promoting. I want to hunt and kill what I fear and a 15' gator or an 18' salt water croc, Kodiak brown bear and great white shark are on the list.

Boo

PS This also means I want a crack at Grizz, Greebo, Bruv and MickyD as well. Plus a few other "critters" in this game.

nice pets, Ink. I'd post a pic of my kitty cat Fluffy but after your pics mine would seem ordinary. And normal.

I have absolutely no problem with hunting for food, just don't like trophy hunting

salt water set up are awesome, i've had a couple, nothing like the fresh water, but I had a very sick 55 salt that I had over $4000 into
that was by far my favorite tank i've had.  mostly it was for a "chain link" moray.

yeah, its true :(, you can blame the prison guards union and the over generous retirement packages for that. :bolt:
You can legally have guns in California, and shoot them too (first hand experience with both).

Must be one of the rare instances.

The In-laws were going to run the coastal hiway in kali till folks in AZ told them they frown on guns there. We do not leave the house without being well healed. In any case, they went north and dropped kali off the list of things to do.

Ink I had a 100 gallon salt setup. Yes you can spend tons on it. In my case it was worth it but I have since sold it.

I love the salt set-ups..especially the reef systems...the 55 I had was not a reef system..well it started out like that but all the fish I love are carnivores so it didn't stay pretty very long, but it was a sick system, I had every thing you could imagine, from 4 large canister filters, UV filter, huge protean skimmer, I had 6 power heads that were timed to simulated a wave system, about 75 lbs of live rock and sand.   I sold it though myself :cry
