Title: Disc golf
Post by: Melvin on May 20, 2011, 11:54:47 AM
Anybody playing this?

I got a buddy who's been into it for ~20 years. I played once back in the 90's, but he's convinced me to give it a go this afternoon. Should be an interesting change of pace.

LOL, that's funny. When the subject would come up I'd make fun of his "hippy" sport. Today he was talking about an upcoming tournament and I asked if anyone was running a sportsbook in the area that I might find some action. He gave me a funny look to which I responded, "Yeah, those hippies probably haven't got the cash for a wager."

He's got a good sense of humor and we had a laugh about it.

That was pretty big in the Auton area. Not sure if it still is though. Proximity to UT meant lots of courses.

Yeah, courses are popping up left and right around here.

And since I'm just awful at stick golf....

If you know anything about disc golf my handle should give you a clue  :lol

I've been playing for 20ish years.  There are allot of courses around Atlanta, tournaments of various sizes are played almost every weekend somewhere in Georgia.

I was in the Houston Flying Disc Society around the turn of the century.  Then I got remarried.

If you have a knack for throwing frisbees, you will enjoy it.

Disc golf is in a few parks around Northern Virginia. It's fun but not as compelling as I once thought it might be. One of the most fun disc golf arrangements is in Sports Champion in Playstation Move mode in Sony's PlayStation 3.

There's a nice course on W and OD bike trail as it passes through arlington where they regularly move the holes and it has some great altitude changes rather than being flat.

I think I played it for about 10 years though I started in 1980 in coconut grove miami when I saw some guys playing during a run from Elizabeth Virrick gym at the former seaplane base there.

I got to the point where I stopped carrying "drivers", "putters", and other purpose made discs and instead used the late 70s era "master disc" for the entire course.

I do like the relatively new 200 gram "heavyweight" disc and will be trying it on the arlington course later this summer.

Threw a Linova Eagle today (160 class maybe). Only made par on 3 of 18 holes.

Had a good time and will be buying some discs in the near future.

What I find most interesting is the flight dynamics of these discs. My buddy was making them fly in an S pattern on the way down the fairway. It's a precision sport, no doubt.

Glad to get some feedback from the community on this one. I even know what a Hyzer is now :lol I was in the spot for a hard turning shot and buddy said' "Hyzer it in there". Apparently another friend of ours uses them to float great shots around bends.

Disc Golf is great! You meet so many great laidback people when you are playing. Ive been playing disc golf for about 10 years, was a competitive am/advanced class player on the Southern Nationals Pro Am Tour for awhile. Ive played from Chicago to Louisiana;from Texas to Florida. Just recently moved to Australia, joined up with the Perth Disc Golf Club when I moved here.  Just  took a trip to Melborne for the Victoria Open with the club and won the mens advanced class!

disc golf is a blast.   there are at least 6 or 7 courses within 50 miles of here, so it's always fun to go do with a couple of buds

Yep from GB.    I usually go to Pamperin Park in GB or Bairds on the east side.   Seems like there is a new course put up every year.  UW Green Bay now has a course, and they just built a new one in Howard, on the west side.   If those get boring, there is Plamann Park in the Fox Valley, as well as Kaukaunas newly remodled course.   Not to mention the dozen or courses between Manitowoc and Sheboygan :)      plenty of disc golf to be done here  :aok

I used to love hackysack. We'd play for hours and it oftentimes ended with grievous injuries due to our proximity to buildings and equipment.  :lol

Real Golf maybe?

Naww, I suck at it. Last time I went (~5yrs ago), my drive off of #1 was a beauty. Straight down the fairway and loooooong.

Only good shot of the day.  :furious

This disc golf thing might be the sort of sport I'm looking to do with the few friends I have that I don't hunt and fish with.

Ever try Archery Golf?

That's a blast too.  We have a 9 hole course about 8-10 miles from my house.

Is that like a 3D course or???  Used to shoot a lot of competitions back in the day but "archery golf" is a new one to me.

No, it's basically just like a golf course.  Actually, a regular golf course would work fine.  The only real difference is the fact that you don't need fancy grass; just mowed fairways.  The "rough" is generally just woods.  The hole is a 4" diameter plastic ball, on a wire stand which holds the ball a few inches above the ground.

You "drive" by lofting an arrow down the fairway.  In some cases, a 65-70# compound won't make it all the way (I prefer a logbow or recurve, but it doesn't matter).  In others, you'd better not go for max range...  You adjust mainly by altering your launch angle, but always at full-draw.

You generally "putt" by only pulling the string a few inches back, and firing with a high arch.  There's nothing to keep you from aiming directly at the ball and going for it, besides the fact that a miss will generally skip and go far beyond the "hole" (which usually means you're deep in the woods, er, "rough").

Usually, once you're close enough to fire at a steep enough downward angle to ensure the arrow will stick, you'll finish the hole with a full-draw "kill-shot".

Some people use specialty arrow tips as well.  Metal blunts drilled out with a welded-in nail for a spike-tip are great for those 40-75 yard shots because they'll grab and stick much better than a field point, which will bounce/deflect off the ground and sail far beyond.  Those wire-tip "judo" points work well for the same reason.  Some will switch to flu-flu arrows for those 100 or so yard shots too, to get into putting or kill-shot range.

It's really just like golf, with one bow but several arrows, instead of one ball but several clubs.

It's a good idea to use your worst arrows for "driving", because the fairways are kind of narrow  :devil

There's a lot of fun in just letting an arrow fly up into the sky, and watching it sail out a few hundred yards...

LOL....we had archery golf at Camp Awana in Wisconsin...or was it illinois.

They had a huge archery golf course that was popular.

Sadly, playing through caused a couple of injuries.

Well, you've got to have some common sense I suppose...

All in all, probably safer than the drive to the camp, though.
