Title: Due to  the current economic downturn...
Post by: Stalwart on June 08, 2011, 01:30:44 PM
Quote
Starting today at the 4pm switchover, we are going to change the arena format to go to a single late war arena. Due to  the current economic downturn our main arena play numbers no longer justify a second late war arena and we'll be dropping the 2 arena system until such time that it is again needed.

Additionally we are currently developing user spawned arenas to serve as an expanded and HTC hosted version of the old 8 player H2H.  The introduction of this feature will also lessen the need for a second late war arena.

If I had only $30 each month for entertainment, I'd purchase a Netflix account and Aces High.

But, I'll have to buy a new computer and video card before I upgrade past version 2.13.

Dump Netflix and save that $30 a month.

Okay, we're trying to explain player number decline in terms of an economic downturn, but how likely is it that $15 dollars a month is breaking anyone? You'd almost think player numbers would go UP because sitting at home and playing Aces High is so damn cheap.

It almost broke me when I was out of work for over a year.  I was fotunate enough to have community members cover my subscrition for 6 months or I'd have been forced to leave.  It was a time when I learned just how many things in your life you can get along without.  For a long time I made 6 figure salaries.  When I had money I spent it.  That changed  a decade ago then things got worse.  Now I work 13 hour days and barely make it.  It's like I'm back in college.  I agree AH is cheap but when it comes down to food and shelter or AH I'd ultimately choose food and shelter.

BTW, I now pay $8/mo. for cable TV.  No frills 21 channels supplimented with $10/mo. for Netflix but I've been considering dropping Netflix.

15 is not much but when it is eat or play..... one should eat.

There are a lot of folks in desperate situations. Most of us are in no way equipped to vouch for them.

My only concern is that our co-conspirators in game and the game company itself survive successfully.

I could afford the $15 each month, but until I find meaningful work in my industry I decline to subscribe out of principle.

Work before play.  :salute

When I do find work again, I'll still have to upgrade my machine before I subscribe.

I would Like to point out you may want to be careful with Streaming media, and online gaming. Most ISP's are capping your bandwidth.  AT&T Just implemented 150gb Cap for DSL and 250 GB Cap for Uverse. To make matters worse AT&T's meters count upload and download and include encapsulation, not to mention they tend to error in the favor of at&T any way. Most companies that Cap have a Tiered TV service to protect. So far Broadband Companies that don't sell any form of TV service are not Capping, YET! Currently DSL re-sellers that resell AT&T DSL in part or whole are not effected and don't seem to be capping.

All depends on the price of gas now doesn't it.  I was out of work for two years and 4 months, I was self employed, so collecting Unempolyment was not an option, although I paid into it for 30 years.  We lived on what we had saved and any tempory work that I could get.  My home went into foreclosure, can't afford health insurance, trust me, when your pockets are empty, $15.00 is a lot of money.   I'm working again, but at 63 years of age, not enough time to make up everything that's been lost.

The Macchis need to be updated, along with others, but there has certainly been improvements over the last 6-8 years.  Look at the C-47 as it was in 2010 and how it is now.

You do understand the concept of an example, yes?

Would it be better if I mentioned the A6Ms, M4s, Panther or Mosquitos?  Those probably don't matter to you either, so they don't count either, right?  Only the units you use matter and everybody else should go suck eggs, right?  Do I read your attitude correctly. Sir?

I never said they don't matter, don't put words in my typing.
But this IS a fighter combat Sim,and their ARE a bunch of fighter planes that need remodeled, maybe the m3 and goon was not the best choices to use ones time on to keep new players coming in.

Due to the economic down turn the subscriber base has fallen below the point where two arenas are needed.  As the economy recovers it should, ideally, reverse and the two arenas will again be required.

It is not just a fighter combat sim and the C-47 and M3 are both very commonly used, particularly by players on their two week trials for whom fighter-vs-fighter combat is generally synonymous with suicide.  Two week trial players often turn to troop/supply delivery and bomber runs as a method of contributing to the "war" where they'd be nothing but free kills, and frustrated, in fighters.

Yes, there are fighters that need to be updated too, and they will be, but the other units are valid for updating as well.  In terms of usage, the Lancaster and B-26 probably top the priority list at this time.

is it really the economic down turn or all the recent changes + arena cap issues caused a mass exit from the game?  This game is like crack to most.  Most crack addicts would find the $15 to pay for their addiction......

Welcome to Australia.

Our internet only providers cap our bandwidth (download AND upload) according to the package you sign up for.

I pay $69 a month for cable internet (no tv) and I get 150gig (75gb on-peak and 75gb off-peak (Peak = between 12pm and 12am, Off-peak = 12am to 12pm))

All of that includes my uploads, so if I'm downloading torrents I have to restrict my uploads or I effectively halve my 'downloads'.

Our internet is absolute crap compared to the US.

I've always felt a certain kinship to the Australians, they being descended from people the English did not want, myself being descended that did not want the English.

Also I am from Texas, which like Australia, has an infernally hot and dry climate that makes it a seemingly mad place for people originating in the British Isles to settle.

Alas, I am afraid that Australia has a slight advantage. Whereas we both have salamanderly plants, salamanderly lizards, poisonous snakes and toxic invertebrates, Australia also has GIANT LIZARDS. Makes me green with envy. Oh well, perhaps having oil makes up for it.

My job got the axe with the federal budget passing.  I'm sure there are those out there on this BBS who will be happy to hear about my own personal misfortune, and state that I was a drag on our economy in any case, with my "outrageously draining" $30K GS-5 federal research job. At least I was involved in some promising preliminary cancer research that might actually do some good for the world. As it is, I am surviving on a part time privately funded project and my savings scratched together over the past 5 years to attempt to buy a home.  I must also postpone my doctoral work indefinitely, less than a year from my thesis defense.  I am lucky enough to have saved what I did, when I did, but it appears my mid 30's will be quite different than they seemed.

I'm closing my AH account this month.  Work before play, and that's all there is to it. Until I have another full time job, none of my savings is going towards any sort of frivolity, AH included.  Friends of mine have been out of work in my field for a year now...I must be prepared for exactly the same, or more.  Every job opening in my field is currently awash in applicants.  I was lucky enough to be working for this long, as it is.  When I'm not working, I'm looking and applying for something full time.....there is no such thing as "free" time when your bank account is marching towards zero.

Australia is a beautiful country.

Ya ... unfortunately everything is freaking poisonous or venomous. Australia is Gods toxic dumping grounds. You have box jellies, Irukandji Jellies, Blue Ring Octopuses, Stone fish, sea snakes and poisonous sea cone snails in the water. the worlds deadliest spider the funnel web and one of the deadliest variants of the black widow ...the red back. You have the inchman and Jack jumper ant whose toxin  has a tendency to induce anaphylaxis. You have Brown, tiger, and the famous Taipan snakes. It was Australia that revolutionized herpetology by showing that venomous lizards are actually much more widespread than thought (Up to then only the Americas were thought to have venomous lizards) Heck Australia has the worlds only venomous mammal to humans ... the Platypus. I'm not going to touch on the Salt water crocks. There is a reason Australia was colonized with criminals!

you forgot the most venomous snake in the world, the fierce snake,  as a matter of fact Australia has 7 out of 10 of the worlds deadliest snakes :O

That's the Inland Taipan (Oxyuranus microlepidotus). There is also the coastal Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus), and Central Ranges Taipan (Oxyuranus temporalis). the Papuan taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus canni) is Native to  Papua New Guinea.
