Was not aware we had people who hated GVs, if anyone did not like them they could just stick to aircraft.

Quite a few still voice that opinion about how bad the new GV controls are, exactly what is different? You start with engine on and hit shift + W for auto drive, you simply move your rudders to turn.
Still not understanding this massive hate when GV'ing suddenly became simplified.
-
Some tanks can no longer climb the same hills they used to.
No fun when you drive 2 sectors to the city and can't climb in as you did just a few weeks earlier.
-
What's a GV?

I thought you could still manually shift if need be?

I agree the T-34 is quite known not to be able to climb a hill, I wonder if there's a reason for this if not for historical purposes.
-
Quite simply there are a few things you could do with the manual transmissions that you can no longer do. I for one lament the fact it changed.

No negative waves from me. The tanks manage themselves. I've not ever had an issue with the tanks being any slower up hill vs if they were manual.
Some fellas simply cant adjust, accept that the arcade style gv game is gone, and LEARN how to manage.
-
icepac:
I haven't tried it recently, but before you could climb most hills by putting it in reverse. With little regard to the slope, if First gear wouldn't let you, you just backed up the hill. Use to do that in canyons and climb the 5-6k side walls. You know, the ones that are almost vertical? It did take some time and practice tho because any deviation left or right could send you rolling down the side. :x
-
I really have a hard time with the new controls. I also do not get why i can't climb a 5-10 degree hill from a flat rolling 25mph. I then spend the next minute trying to turn, back up, turn, forward etc...
It's hard to accept change, but there's got to be something to this issue on the hills...

You mean the same 5-10 degree hills that used to stop you dead when you hit them at full speed? Like the berms on the edges of roads?
Film or it didn't happen.
Things I've noticed:
You cannot reverse up a hill in a Tiger or Panther. The "pivot" is in a forward gear so every time you try to steer in reverse you stop.
GV's fly really good now. Hit a rise at the wrong angle at speed and over you go. Turtle.
GV's will still go 120mph down a good slope, in gear.

Some people just don't like change.

Sure but we never had a manual transmission. I'd say any day that stick is better than automatic but what we had before was not a true manual, we did not have a clutch, throttle, and we could not just switch on the wear we wanted (had to do it in order).
-

That's funny: the GV controls change from analog to ASWD pushbuttons and you say "arcade style" is gone? More like it's arcade style now. In fact, four buttons laid out in a cross configuration is exactly like an arcade game. ;)
Plus, why do you assume that those who lament the loss of control have not already LEARNed how to adapt? Just because we've adapted doesn't mean we like it, or that it's realistic, or that you have as fine control as before in positioning your tank. Do you drive your car solely with your cruise control buttons?
My opinion is that it is pointless to complain because there is no going back. They want the GV'er to have the ability to drive and shoot at the same time. That means that one or the other has to be compromised and you certainly wouldn't want to aim the gun using coarse key press control.
-

I don't mind change. But going to automatic transmission was a fix without a problem.
-

The cars that park themselves, coupled with the sonar detection and laser guided cruise control systems that are getting more popular....
Just saying :D
I want to be able to use my stick in the commanders position again.. :joystick:

GV's now are slugs on any incline, how in the heck do you keep it in one gear while climbing a hill without it shifting to another gear and stopping all your momentum, is there some trick to it, real stupid not to be able to select a lower gear, even an automatic transmission has the option to Manuel shift for Hills or pulling heavy loads, why dumb it down?

Shift W and S are max or stop respectively, If on the other hand you hit W and let go, you stay in the gear you let go in. IE Press it and it gets up to second gear when you release, thats where it stays until you enter another command. Same works for downshift.

Don't like the new GV controls. Bring back the manual transmission. We don't need a driver position to do this. Gear changes appear on screen. Also miss being able to zoom in when at the gunners position. Enemy GV's look too small. I liked seeing my rounds hit the enemy and watching his turret blow off.

Use a Tiger, Panther or Sherman VC :)

All that stuff to remember while in the heat of a battle hmmmm that sounds so much easier than just selecting the gear you want (old way) and use your throttle to move and adjust your speed (old way) in 28 years i never did see WASD keys while operating equipment. man i could go on about Heavy Equipment that's my passion, My grandfather owned a Military surplus/ Heavy Equipment yard it was amazing growing up as a Kid there :)

True. A bit nit-picky perhaps, but true. They were more versatile before however.

My biggest problem with the setup is slowing down/maneuvering hills and trees. Old way you could pull back on the stick, which acted like braking. New setup, you hit the toggle till you find some mid range speed between gears. More keyboard/toggle work while being shot at or bombed.

Since some folks do not have sticks we are all required to use the kb. Lowest common denominator. Just be glad they have not decided all flight should be lowered too. :)

I would think that if someone cant afford a 15-30 dollar joystick of some sort, they cant afford the 15 bucks a month to play the game.
There was nothing wrong with the gv's in the first place that needed fixed.
-
I don't hate them, just love bombing them.

Have you heard any guarantees this won't happen? I wouldn't worry until you see "game controller" in the list of options though.
If the change to gvs was solely about moving the game to a joystick free world then so be it. For myself, it just took away another part of the game I enjoyed. Poor me. They keep doing that. No matter. It must be getting in and retaining thousands of customers though, or surely they wouldn't keep doing it?

If you have a requirement to have a certain, very uncommon piece of equipment to enjoy or even just to try out a game, you are drastically cutting your chances to get new customers. No matter if they could "afford" it or not, they are not bothering to go out and buy a joystick (for which they do not have any other use) just to see if this game is fun in any way.
The gamer demographics (and don't forget: we all are gamers) has changed a lot in the past 20 years. And if AH doesn't adapt to these changes, it will go down. And AH is not just a game. It's also a business.

What's a GV?
A bread bin with tracks and a turret

Whats the difference between
W
A D
S
and
Forward Stick
Left Stick Right Stick
Back Stick
?
Can't you map analog commands on your stick now?
Map A to full left deflection, D to full right etc? Would that work?
Did you actually use your stick to adjust your speed the old way? Didn't you just pick a gear and push the stick forward until you were going full speed in the gear you were in?
The only reason to downshift the old way was so you could actually move going up hill. The new way. you just hit Shift + W and go as fast as possible up hill. Shifting up and down is annoying but you are still going "full speed".

I could maneuver through town or woods easier with the joystick method. Otherwise it's ok

There are 65,534 differences. The stick is analog: there are 65,536 positions available for fine control. A keyboard key has two positions. If you don't see the difference then we can just fly our airplanes with WADS right? And you can tear out the steering wheel in your car and replace it with two pushbuttons: L and R. And remove the brake and accelerator and just use your cruise control. Right?
-
I don't use the keyboard at all and everything works great in my GV's. I see no problem.
-
No problem with the keyboard driving controls here, I've been using that system with tread sims for years.
The only "issue" that I'd like to see discussed is the T-34's performance on hills. The other day I was spawning onto the side of hills where the 34 was truly stuck from the start. Forwards or backwards there wasn't anything over 1mph or a slow turn in place. Everyone else passing me up in Panzer's, wondering why I'm sitting there and mocking me on VOX asking if I have a good book to read. Exit... Ditch, respawn with a OST, same hills no problems, climbs great. Killed, respawn with a 34, stuck. Ditch... respawn M4, climbs well, back into the slaughter.
Any others see similar results with the 34? Any historical reason the tank might have issues with grades and that is the reason it's being modeled?

Have you tried tapping the buttons?
We're not talking 3-D here. Only Left, Right, Faster and Slower.
