Yup down 2 zip in the first 23 minutes, tied at the half and 4-2 at the end.

Some 93,000+ fan in the stadium.

One of the most intense games I've seen in a while. Freaken Gio and Howard were fighting for the ball! made the man go to tears.

Did not like it, had to deal with my girlfriend (her parents are Mexican nationals) gloating most of the night. Was sad that the only channel I could find it on was in Spanish.

However, that game did change things up for me, I now have a new most hated player, replacing Messi. May that 15 year old looking Chicharito burn.

I just wish they had given at least a yellow card for Adu getting kicked in the face. It was painfully blatant. Overall, it was a great game, but the US defense was a wet paper bag. Congrats to Mexico on the win!

I saw that there were alot of missed foul calls. I couldn't make sense of Donovan getting that yellow card but ther other guy basically tackled the Mexican player right after with no booking at all. And yes Chicharito is our main man..errr kid....guy.But Gio also went to work, placing a pretty one riiiight in the corner. That goal from donovan drove a knife through me.

Tough to beat Mexico at home :) US might have had a few more foul calls if if the match was in RFK.

Not to anything away from them, Mexico is a great team and play some really entertaining soccer. They'd be one of my favorite teams if I didn't hate them so much.

On the US side the best sign was the re-emergence of Freddy Adu over the last two games.  He's exactly what the US needs - a playmaking midfielder with vision who can also get up and down the wing if needed.

Yeah, thats BS. My sons graduation was delivered in both spanish and english, why not the closing ceremony in which the USA was the visiting team in a city in America. As a Californian im here to tell you that California is no longer a land of the free or part of the United States for that matter. We have been annexed by Mexico and nobody cares. Same for Texas, Arizona, and numerous other places our govt. says we shouldnt go to.

Was the ceremony really that much of a big deal? I mean Mexico won...They should be able to understand the ceremony while watching it on TV and what not. If the US had won in Mexico im pretty sure the SAME thing woulda happened and Mexicans would be pissed off because it was in english.

It was CONCACAF's decision to have it in Spanish. God only knows what they were thinking. I'm sure the Mexican fans loved it though, so there's that.

I played both forms of football, and I have to say, what people call "soccer" is far more tiring, and does take more energy/athleticism.

What people don't realize is that if anything, american football is more of a strategy game between the coaches with athletes as game pieces.

And no, I didn't play kicker, played D-Tackle in high school (tied for most sacks in division), also was goalie for 3 years until injury.

The issue was not that the ceremony was in both english and spanish, it was only in spanish. No english at all (and the were playing in the states). I would have no issue if was in both, that would make sense.

Title: Re: Mexico vs USA
Post by: Penguin on July 02, 2011, 08:03:54 PM
What does soccer have to do with world socialism?  The only similarity I see is that they both start with an 'S'.  To refute: The post-game riot from a soccer match actually resulted in a violent secession and the creation of a new country!  Neither were socialist, and there's nothing international about forming new countries.

Why do so many in the United States view soccer as a 'wimpy' sport?  If you've actually played a highschool match, they're brutal.  The running never stops.  There are no breaks, other than for the ball going out of bounds, half-time, and fouls.  It's not a contest of pure endurance either, one always moves at a full sprint.  Sheer muscle won't win; with the adrenaline pumping, that net starts looking awfully small.

For those who complain of its lack of contact- why are golf, tennis, baseball and softball not similarly disparaged?  These four sports are absolutely massive, feature little to no contact, but are all regarded as either high brow or respectable.  Yet soccer, with referees blind as bats and players easily twice your size coming at you like bats out of heck, is called 'wimpy'.

With the US victory in the Mexican-American War, it should have just taken control of the whole place and we'd not have half the issues we have today.  Think about it.

They're not "huge" at all in the terms of the USA supporting the top athletes in tennis and golf. Tigers days are soon done, and the upstart is rory mcelroy. Tennis is pretty much the same except they're is almost no one that competes at nadals, djokerics levels.

Watch Spain and or Barcelona play, nothing excruciating about that.

It's not about being tough, manly or hard, football is a sport for everyone to watch or play. I played for 30 years and knackered my knees doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way. Getting up and playing local football in England in the middle of winter on a sunday morning is not comfortable, but we all enjoy it. It's actually called Assciation Football (soccer is a nickname for it).

Its got its bad points, diving, feigning injury etc. Plus England are crap! But I'd still watch a classic game over anything else!

I used to think so but after the World Cup with Spain winning almost every match 1-0 and watching Barca all year I'm had enough of the tiki-taka. There's some great moments to be sure, and some great runs by Messi but in the whole give me Newcastle v. Arsenal, or Blackpool v. anybody.  Spain and Barca play keepaway for 90 minutes, the better EPL matches tend to be more wide open and exciting.

Although the amazing thing about Barcelona is that when they lose the ball they get it right back - their defense, or their forechecking if it was hockey, is ridiculously good.

Playing soccer was fun.  I usually was a sweeper until I got older and became a midfielder.  I had free reign for the most part and physically dominated both in stamina and strength.  I played indoor and outdoor.  I got tired of soccer.  It overlapped with the exciting sports to play.  I decided to nix it in favor of football, basketball, baseball, track, and swimming where I could fit that in.

Soccer guys were annoying.  There was a real inferiority complex among them on and off the field.  On average, I found them to be more cerebral, but that also made them over analytical and delusional.  You'd think they'd accept their place, but they always were looking up several inches at people and telling them how tough they were.  I think there wouldn't be such a backlash if they weren't the SCRAPPY DOs of sports.

After school, I was a gym rat looking for a fun time and found rugby.  Soccer players have the delusion that they are rugby players.  I can respect rugby players.

Girls like soccer.  A lot of them play and can relate to guys that play.  That common ground causes some delusion as well as they equate soccer skills with machismo... if left alone with only soccer players for an extended period.  Much like dancing and song.  Soccer guys are like the goth kid.  The grunge kid.  They are that whining guy that can relate to those estrogen filled feelings.

Many of us have dated girls with clingy ex's who were soccer players.  The only group that does drama better than women and the "funny, not harhar" types, are soccer players.

Anyways, soccer is the world's most popular sport.  Soccer is great.

We also kept score.  Nobody even thought anything of it.

It's not sad to lose once in a while, or even half the time, but when your team goes 0-1-9 for the season, it takes all the fun out of it.  To compound it, our coach didn't hold practice after many of us missed the very first one.

Going to Mexico in a few weeks to visit my sick Grandmother. Seems a lot of the violence is more up North towards the border since my family say that the don't see any of it. Yet they are always asking about Hurricanes and devastating tornadoes in my area  :lol so its all the same i guess.

I'll be honest here.My father did come here illegally in the 70's at the age of 17 and brought his brother which was 14 at the time. He said it was a whole lot easier back in the day. He got caught once, said the officers picked him up,took him to a coffee shop chatted a bit then said "better luck next time amigo" and he did  :lol.
My father educated himself by going to the library and became a successful business man with nothing but a few books, a third grade education, and tons of determination. His brother also now lives well in California and both are now US citizens.
I also have an uncle who crossed illegally but went back home to get educated with the help of my father and uncle. He Just graduated from UM as a neurologist and is headed off to Colombia university. Guess my family is one of the few that turned out well.

RBNY FTW. MLS has been trying for years to get the franchise (formerly Metrostars) to be successful and it's finally working. Swedish coach Hans Backe has them playing a highly entertaining fast moving and passing style that's scored the most goals in the league with 34 in 19 games.

They give up a lot of goals too but that's because they play such an attacking style, pushing both fullbacks all the way up. Backe said when he came here that he'd rather win 4-2 than 1-0. Refreshing for a coach to acknowledge that he's in the entertainment business, especially in a league that's had way too many 0-0 draws this season.

Thierry Henry is providing most of the goals - a league leading 9 in 14 games - but former Notts County player Luke Rodgers has been an unexpected hit, easily one of the best strikers in the league. Most of the other players are internationals, with Rafa Marquez, the Estonian Assassin Joel Lindpere, and Finnish Teemu Tanio (formerly of Spurs) being the standouts.
