Dear History channel,
I would like to know why you changed into a Reality Tv Drama Programming channel.
I dont care about Pawn Stars, I dont like iceroad truckers ( Wtf does any of this have to do with history) I want my dogfights, battle 360 and much more actual history stuff back. I hope you did not get taken over by google like youtube did. Youtube is a horrible place now....

Believe it or not, fellas, there is this whole expansive library full of history that has absolutely nothing to do with war.  Shows like Pawn Stars and American Pickers are certainly "on-topic."

Ice road truckers, swamp people, etc. are another story...

I'd suggest these weird things called books.  Rumor has it that people actually put time and effort into their research before committing it to paper.  Many of these book things have pictures in them that go along with the text too.

I know, it's an old fashioned idea, but I figure it can't hurt to throw it out there :)

Can't forget about all them Kindle type things now Guppy , Killing the Hardback and Paperback book industry these days, I been finding alot of decent books at yard sales and thrift stores these days.

Plus depending on what cable provider you have there are multiple different channels for the History and Military channels offered where they run the History related programs rather the Reality Programs, Granted Pawn Stars has some very interesting Historical Artifacts coming in but then again I would not of settled on some of those prices those people took for them.

I happened to see Pawn Stars for the only time when a guy brought in his WW2 P38 pilot Dad's 82nd FG A2 jacket from WW2.  Had the unit patch on the front and a P38 on the back.  The idiot behind the desk says something about not being sure it was real as he understood the P38 only flew in the Pacific.  I wanted to shoot the guy behind the desk for being clueless and the son for ever considering giving up Dad's priceless jacket!

I get that folks like the kindle etc bit, but I'm an old die hard.  Gotta have the book in hand.  Kinda doubt most of the stuff I look for will ever make it to an e-book too :)

Watch the Military History channel for battle 360, dogfights, and the like.  They are also shown on History International channel.  You can also go online and look through their movie archives I believe, but am not quite sure on that.

This.

I enjoy the stories behind the stuff they have on these shows.  Neat history.  The haggling I could do without.

And I'm sure there are a lot of 'plants' by the producers to take stuff into the shop that you wouldn't normally see.  The history is still good.

Chumly, however, I can live without.

There was also one where a guy was trying to sell a P-38 wheel.  It's sad to see SAPP members having to distribute P-38 parts that way.   :D

I lake Pawn Stars, but the kid, Corey, is a buffoon.  He likes to act like he is all knowledgeable, but he only knows what they feed him to say.   And he likes to act like he owns the shop, he doesn't.   Chumbley is a clown, but not sure if it part act, or if he is all clown.

History Channel is nothing other than a rather unfunny joke.

I just pulled up their menu for their main channel over here, I got: 'Only in America - Larry goes to the swamp' (meh), 'Oil Riggers' (meh), Ax Men (double meh).  The thing about these target-audience-of-IQ=50 American TV channels is that most of the formerly decent ones tend to offer an international version - not so for History.  It is beyond me why they think anyone in England (or the rest of the world) cares that Larry has gone to a swamp.  I'd just like to offer this 'Larry' my heartiest congratulations on what must have been an epic voyage to his swamp - the story of which will surely be handed down to his progeny.

To conclude: History channel sucks beyond all belief or recognition.  I hereby propose that they be removed from the 'Documentaries' section, and placed in the 'Entertainment' section (or alternatively, the upcoming 'Retardation' section, where it will be joined with one or two other channels worthy of special recognition).

Ice road truckers, swamp people, etc. are another story...
but they arent.

IRT... if it wasnt for the bvrave souls driving their rigs up past the Arctic circle and risking their lives, they would have to dogsled the supplies in, or boat them in, or fly them in..just like in History. wht do ya know? theres history in it...

Pawn Stars. I have learned more on that show about our history then i think ive learned since i started school in pre-k.

American Pickers im not so hot on, but its history in fact.

Mail Call was great!  I loved the candid humor that he added to the show.  The only thing that came close was Future Weapons, which seemed more like a long series of infomercials than what should have been awesomesauce on wheels.

Eh, a show about someone's current job that they have right now is not history (unless their job routinely deals with historical artifacts, such as Pawn Stars or American Pickers).  Might as well put "Cops" on the history channel too, if we're using your definition--they've had a pretty interesting history themselves.

A documentary on the history of the ice road truckers would be history, but it'd also be a short series.  It seems to be less cost effective for the history channel to hire historians to research new documentaries than it is for them to hire producers to market new reality series.

Some folks might cringe for my saying this, but honestly, some of the best history programming available is produced or provided by your local public television...  It often puts cable to shame.

Right then was when that show jumped the shark. Not counting the shark jump with international version they did. This season has really gone downhill. Maya is obviously a bad driver only there for eyecandy. At least Lisa has some legit skills behind the wheel. The nube crybaby from Alabama is pathetic. He thinks everyone is out to get him. He lost me with his "the mechanics sabotaged me" rant when his truck wouldn't start after sitting at -30 for over a day.  :noid

Oh, I dunno, guys, the HISTORY Channel isn't all that bad, at least they keep things relevant and sensible. After all, who woulda known that the aliens waged nuclear war over the earth thousands of years ago? (End sarcasm).

I think I'll write a letter, too. If they give me that "history is made every day" BS, then I'm going to re-write them and ask them what sorta major historical event will come about in IRT, Swamp People and Larry the Cable Guy. (Given, LTCG does go to some historically significant places, but not enough to be really informative about them).

Two good friends of mine worked for many years in the HC main office in NYC.  According to them, the "suits" never gave a rat's patootie about history or facts or accuracy.  All they cared about was selling advertizing time.  And the suits *hated* it whenever someone called it the Hitler Channel.

You are right about that. He won't last long. We saw Rick get canned a couple seasons ago. We'll see how he does with
his new leased truck. He won't be abusing this truck because he is responsible for anything that might go wrong.

I have to agree with you about Maya. She is eye candy. It makes ya wonder if she really has ANY experience driving a truck.
Maybe T's and A's will help the ratings. If it does not, the show will get cancelled.

But that's what I really don't get, if they're worried about their image or reputation.  If you call yourself the History Channel, and you've previously aired tons of documentries and footage of Hitler and his 3rd Reich in proprotion to non-Hitler and non-Nazi related airtime, and now you're no longer airing almost any history at all and almost exclusively reality TV, a very negative light could be cast on them with some percievable truths to back it up.

That new woman doesn't even sound like she's gone on a leisure drive in the mountains before, she has that look and gaze of a 3-yo staring out the window down the steep slope thinking "they put a road... on this, up here?".  She's cute, but I wonder if they didn't just hire the cutest person with the least experience OTR or in rough terrain most likely to get into an accident in the imediate future on the show because that's the one major thing they haven't already have happend by casting experienced knowledgable truck drivers.  I feared this happeneing when after the first couple of seasons they started casting "characters" rather than no-BS suck-it-up get-the-job-done truckers.

Agree with a lot of what you guys have said, Maya is pretty much eye candy for tv, with only 3 yrs driving around NYC, she is not even a small bit qualified for that harsh area.   They need serious OTR drivers who have spent time on hills, mountains, and in bad weather.

I do enjoy Lisa, she is not bad to look at, a good person, and honestly trying hard to be good at the job.  She is pretty much there now with the experience she has gained driving up there.

I didn't watch IRT the first season or two, but kind of find it a good time filler now.  Of course, Modern Family is the funniest show on tv, and Pawn Stars is interesting for what you see and can learn.

I'm surprised but not, never thought Bear was top-tier trucker material personaly (one of those truckers more worried about his mail truck driver delivering his paycheck on-time and in one piece than the concerns of his employers about him and his own deliveries), but he's the longtime favorite of the show's editors and producers.

Whiner Dave refused to stay in the convoy with Rick and Maya.....boss decides to can him.
surprised he stayed employed as long as he did this season.  he likes to do things his way and is very opinionated, not a good match when they want people holding hands to work together.

Will Dave be back in another role?
likely, reality TV loves those that just never get along with others.

I have mixed feelings on the subject of the kindle.  I've replaced my paperback purchases with e-books, but having even a small bookshelf filled with hardcover books such as On the Origin of Species, I, Robot
and War and Peace makes any study look timeless.  The books are also great to curl up with if one has trouble falling asleep.

The feeling of sitting down with my nephew (he's not reading yet, but that's not the point) and a REAL book just can't be matched by ANY stretch of the imagination with an eBook. And I'm not even getting into the value of having a real, work-of-art type book (leather-bound, etc). Or the sentimental value of a book being passed down by a father, mother, etc. Plastic and electronics CAN NOT COMPARE to that.

Oh, and then there's the whole thing about Amazon, etc., wiping stuff from your ebooks without a word. Maybe the cases so far have been for legit reasons, but the ability for someone to just remove information that way is frightening to the EXTREME.

The only thing I will bother to sit down and watch anymore is Top Gear. Good thing that seems to comprise a good 40% of all of BBC One's programming. Everything else on television has gone downhill fast. Especially childrens' cartoons.

EDIT: If anyone has a channel called Palladia, it plays a good variety of music, signed and indie artists, music videos and live performances, music festivals, musical movies too. (Pink Floyd's The Wall, The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, etc.) It's what I imagine the fabled MTV of old used to be like.
