Title: Any beretta owners?
Post by: Major Biggles on July 19, 2011, 09:33:59 PM
Thinking of buying a new beretta 471EL silver hawk side by side. Anyone here shot one/know of a friend who has one? Being a British shooter, autos are just not acceptable for a game day and I do detest over/unders. This gun caught my eye and the colour hardened/gold inlaid one with gold double trigger certaily caught my eye! Anyone have any experience with beretta side by sides?

Dont own any Beretta sxs, but have a couple of O/Us that i love. One is a hunting gun (686 onyx) the other is a sporting clays gun (687 Silver Pigeon). They fit me like a glove, and operate flawlessly.

Oh, i forgot, I have a couple of Parker SXS shotguns that i love. If your not stuck on Beretta check them out.Kreighoff also makes some really nice SXS shotguns. I work(ed) part time at a local gunshop that a friend of mine owns and interact with alot of shotgunners, trap and sporting clay types. Ill put the word out that im looking for any feedback on the model your looking for and get back to you. I have one gent that comes in that I would trust whole heartedly regarding anything sxs shotguns. WHen were you thinking of getting it? It may be a week or so until i hear anything back.

Got a little while bailey. Need my shotgun licence first.

What really matters to me is suitability for game shoots, something quite formal over here in England. Turning up with an over/under is considered slightly bad form and turning up with an auto is just unthinkable. Not a lot of point in autos over here anyway as they are limited to 2 round magazines. Shuff, handguns of any sort other than antique muzzle loaders are completely illegal, no matter what licence you have...

I'd get it in double trigger though, not SST. I'd like if the action had a little more engraving but the price would be far higher...

Actually im glad they havent taken that away from you gents yet  :aok

Nice pics Biggles, Im away from home atm, but when i get back, ill talk to my friend. Only problem ive ever seen with a Beretta shotgun ( better grades ) is extractor issues. Beretta ALWAYS makes good on any issue you may have with their higher grade guns. I have a friend that had an issue with his EELL, Beretta paid to have the gun shipped back to them, fixed it, and he had it back on the course in about a week.

When you shoot, is it game birds or clay pigeons?

Shoot both. What I like about the gun is that it looks a lot more expensive than it is. In terms of extractors I've heard it's very reliable, and it has the option to turn the extractors off too which is nice, saves picking up hulls after each drive!!

Sadly so. I'd love to see an intelligent way of them being re-introduced with secure licensing but I don't think it will ever happen after the shootings that have happened. :(

...Turning up with an over/under is considered slightly bad form ...

May I inquire as to why this is so (please forgive my ignorance)? I do have to add I dislike over under shotguns because of the way they appear. I much prefer the look of side-by-side shotguns; purely an aesthetic thing with me.

Mainly because game shoots are a very traditional sport here, where the norm is to turn up with the side by side that your great grandfather shot. Over/unders are now very popular over here, infact shooting clays you probably won't see anyone with a side by side, but on a formal game shoot they're still 'new', if you take my meaning. Turning up with something like an auto or pump action would get you laughed off the estate... Thats just us stuffy Brits for you!

Of course if you're just doing some pigeon shooting with friends, an auto is great, although like I say, the largest magazine allowed without a section 1 firearms licence is 2 rounds (plus one in the chamber).

 Biggs,

would you be getting 2 different chokes on those barrels?

It would seem to me to be the way to go,1 barrel for close medium shots and the other with a full choke for longer ranging shots.

I'm not sure if you go to the trouble to be "fit" for the gun or if they're high end off the rack so to speak, but most of the $$$ shotguns are "fit" to their new owners. Have you looked at any Bennelli's{sp},they used to make a fine weapon.

I had a Beretta over/under for skeet shooting and quail hunting. I sold it for $500 more than I paid for it about 10 years after buying it.

Ive havent shot much at all but I found the side-by-side feels alot more unweildy than an over-n-under. its probably just psychological but the action of raising the gun fits better with the barrels being arranged vertically. ymmv :)

Yeah, interchangeable chokes, standard setup is 1/4 and 3/4, not sure what those are in the US but I'm sure you get the idea. Comes with great choke set that wouldn't take long to change if you had a lot of high birds coming in and you wanted both barrels with tight chokes. These things are generally right off the rack, it's only 3000 pounds. I say only, but a new H&H or Purdey gun made to order will set you back 70,000 pounds, as they are entirely hand made. They are to die for though...

I've actually shot over/under lots more than SxS at clay days etc. Usually SxS guns are lighter than o/u guns, but o/u's do have a greater 'pointability' due to their thinner sight profile which is the reason behind them being adopted worldwide for competitive shooting. If you're used to shooting o/u, switching would definitely feel unwieldy until you got used to it. The great advantage to SxS guns in the field is not only that they look better but they also weigh less, especially in 20-bore. Makes a big difference after 5 hours shooting!

Yeah. while that's true, once you have your eye in, a SxS shoots just as well, plus you look sh*t hot!

Sad truth is that legal gun ownership does not go hand in hand with shootings. I can just about guarantee you there are many handguns in your country. They are just below the radar of officials.

I agree with this.  I have owned a Beretta 92 and currently own a Taurus PT92 which is based on an older design (Taurus actually purchased the tooling from Beretta when Beretta's contract with the Brazilian government ended).  I like the Taurus much better.  The safety is in a better location and the gun shoots better then my Beretta ever did.

Yeah obviously, gun crime is a problem here no doubt. The shootings that led to the various handgun acts over the last 20 years however were committed by licence holding legal gun owners who shot innocent people, notably young schoolchildren and their teachers, in cold blood. With the similar shootings that occurred last year performed by licenced shotgun owners, It looks likely that firearms control measures are likely to get even more draconian here, but ultimately, while I love guns, I get to shoot a whole load of cool kit with the army. It's gotten to the point where I see most guns as weight to carry and brass to pick up lol. Now that handguns are banned, the only people to get killed by them are those involved in gangs and the unfortunate occasional person killed in crossfire. Our police do a great job of trying to keep it in check though.

Here is the Beretta 92F

Compare the safety location on my Taurus PT92

The safety on the Taurus is in a much more natural position, especially for someone used to shooting 1911 based pistols.  It also functions as a de-cocker and is ambidextrious.  I don't recall if the Beretta 92F has a de-cocker or not.

Yeah, thats what I thought, nice that it come with a complete set of interchangable chokes!  I've only seen pix of a Purdey and a few H&H guns but I've read alot about them and thats why I asked about being "fit". I suppose you could have some adjustments made if needed but I'd think it would be pretty balanced right outta the box.

  I've fired a few sideby's and several overunders,a friend had a 22magnum and 20 gauge O/U that was a great bunny gun! I think the O/U's point better but the sideby's are easier to swing to a shot,IMHO.    {havent fired a guns since they made owning 1 more trouble than it's worth}

The choke sizes, im thinking 1/4 is an improved cylinder (US) and 3/4 is full choke(US)?

I own an H&H rifle (in .375H&H), but not a shotgun......If they are half as nice as my rifle is i imagine they are tops!! I have a friend that has a Purdy.I swear the sun rises and sets over that thing (in his world.....lol.)

I swing (follow through)  and point a O/U much better than a SXS....although i have much more experiance with my OUs than my SXS's. I would take them out and give them a whirl on the course, but i shoot Sporting Clays competitively and worry that ill pick up some bad habits on the SXS that will carry over to my OU shooting.

A traditional English hunt is something that i will do one time in my life, but would probably make a fool of myself looking at and drooling over all the gorgous SXSs that you and your shooting buddies were using Biggles  :lol (Im a sucker for old quality shotguns, I have a real soft spot for them.

Are the standard chamber lengths over on your side of the world still 2 1/2?

English shoot is definately on my bucket list!! Ill buy the cases of shells, and the pints afterwards for an invite  :D

Well we have 3/4 and full, so 3/4 would be equal to your 2nd tightest. H&H rifles are lovely. Do you own a bolt or double? Standard chambers are generally 2 1/2 or 2 3/4.

If ever you're over here during the season give me a shout!

I have a Beretta AL391 semi-auto.  I love it, never had any problems.  Everyone I've ever talked to that has owned a Beretta has loved it (though you rarely see a Side by Side around here).
