AH will work with both

but it is recommended to use the analog 3.5mm plug type to reduce resources needed..... USB headphones increases the cpu load

hope this helps

Skuzzy has posted in here about the problems caused by using USB for a data stream like sound.

You might be thinking of motherboard sound chips using cpu cycles.

Aces High supports virtually all sound devices however performance may suffer depending on what type of device you use.

Ordered from best to worst:

1> Separate sound card (doing its own processing)
2> On-board sound chip (using the CPU for its processing)
3> USB sound solution

With that being said if you have a modern processor with plenty of free resources then it really shouldn't make much difference any way BUT if you have an older/slower system and/or insist on running a lot of junk in the background then options 2 or 3 could tax your system just enough to cause performance problems.

Recently I "upgraded" from the Turtle Beach AKR8 to the Turtle Beack HPA2 because of a heck of a deal I got on one used from Ebay.  Both use identical 5.1 surround headphones (I actually used my AKR8 headphones with the HPA2 wiring due to the microphone retaining tab being broken on the HPA2) but the AKR8 is USB and the HPA2 connects to the jacks on the back of the computer.

The result?  Actually sound quality seems to be nearly identical either way.  The onboard sound seems to produce a bit more Bass with a 'less tinny' kind of output but both work comparatively well and are very close to each other.  The only REAL difference that I noticed is that before when I would key my mic I would get a split-second stutter - just barely enough to notice.  Now that stutter is gone completely.

The is on a C2D E7400 (2.8GHz slightly overclocked to 3.15GHz on stock cooling) system with 4GB of DDR3 (1066) Ram and onboard Realtek 5.1 surround.

I agree to your order, Tigger, but only AH/gaming wise. The leading local combined computer/HiFi magazine claims that soundwise the USB version would be the best choice. Why is that? Simply because both on-board and separate sound cards are situated inside the case where magnetic fields from all devices are storming and causing interferences. USB headphones have a soundcard of their own outside the computer case, which acts as a Faraday cage keeping electromagnetic disturbances inside.

HiFi wise I've learned that the best choice would be an external self powered sound device (USB DAC) with gold plated connectors for headphones of your choice. Tube powered ones should give extra warmth to the sound...

Price wise I'd rather invest to a decent gaming rig with a shielded on-board audio device with good headphones than to a $ 4000 (four thousand) golden ear sound box.

It's all bunk if you ask me.  Someone who claims to be able to notice the difference in sound quality between a golden box sound device and a quality sound card would be the same person who claims to be able to distinguish the difference in taste between a $1000 glass of wine and a $100 glass of wine.  I don't buy it and the difference in quality (if it even does exist) would be so minute that it would hardly be worth the expense.

Totally agree. But there are people who claim to notice the difference and are ready to pay for it. And then they listen to Justin Bieber or some other squeaker... And drink their 1k wine from a certain brand glass which leads the liquid to the right spot and at a perfect angle to their sophisticated tastebuds... Personally, I'd like to try to find the difference between a $100 and $1000 glasses of wine, on someone else's expense of course. My budget doesn't allow me to compare even $10 and $100 bottles...

My daughter bought a Turtle Beach headset.  Sent it back for warranty service.  Took weeks to get a response.  They never contacted her.  She talked to them repeatedly.  Finally, after three promised shipping dates had passed they sent her a replacement.

I've never used Turtle Beaches on the computer, however my xbox headset is turtle beaches. (X12's), which you can hook up to a computer I just haven't tried it yet as I already have a computer headset anyway. I've had no problems with mine at all, however I haven't had to send them for repairs or anything.

It seems that's the situation with anyone selling electronics online. Rosewill being the worst from what I heard, but with everything they build always falling apart, you'd think that they'd have great customer repair service :lol.

I have Turtle Beach HPA2's and enjoy them.

+1 unfortunately it looks like they recently discontinued the HPA2.  I was until recently using the AKR8 which is identical to the HPA2 except with a USB interface.  Those were discontinued a long time ago.  I recently got a great deal on a used (like new) HPA2 and have been enjoying it ever sense!  Really it's about the same except before I had a very slight stutter when I hit my vox button and that is now gone.

I really can't recommend anything BUT Turtle Beach as they are comfortable and the sound quality is very nice especially for the price!

It appears the HPA2 has been replaced by the Z6A.  I'd be curious as to how these are (could be better or could be worse).  Looks like they are about $90 with shipping through amazon (CLICK HERE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0056L959K/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=youremyperser-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B0056L959K)) or about $110 directly from Turtle Beach.

EDIT:  It looks like you can still get the HPA2 under the "HPX" name.  It's about $85 with the cords and all with shipping: http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/tournament-series/ear-force-hpx.aspx (http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/tournament-series/ear-force-hpx.aspx)

Sorry, not a fan of skull candy in the slightest. The only quality thing about them is their base, it seems they spend more on their logo than their product. Also, skullcandy's are as I can remember, stereo only, the beachs are 5.1

One thing i would recommend is to get a good sound card with gold plated connectors and use that along with a good headset. These are teh headsets I want to get when i get the money for them. http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/headset.html

I already have the SB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102033 and the sound is awesome. My current headset is OK but I want to get more out of it but it is ok.

Wow US$260-270 for a soundcard and a pair of headphones that might not even be stereo!  I think I'll pass!  I'm perfectly happy with the sound quality of my on board surround sound and my HPA2 headphones.

I guess I'd have to be an audiophile to understand why anyone would want to drop that kind of money into their computer for sound.  Don't get me wrong I've heard good sound but I don't see any reason to need an expensive sound card to drive inexpensive headphones (which is really anything under $200).

Tigger I have to laugh when i see that price too... I bought mine at Best Buy for 99 on sale, so i dont think I went wrong on the card. The Headset I have right now is the Plaintronics 777 Gamecon headset http://www.plantronics.com/us/product/gamecom-777.  Bought those at Best Buy for 79 so I think I did OK on my sound setup, the combo was an upgrade from the Logitech G35 USB head set.

So stopping some one in AHII from buying $100.00 headset that is clearly defective is lame?

Rather have our community know about this lemon & not drop $100.00 of hard earned cash.

Most people wont look for every thread about this item so if I cover them all buyer beware at that point they have been warned.

Lets speculate.... How many sets of these headsets have been sold since the start of this thread over a year ago? hundreds, thousands? and your the first to come in dragging all of these up posting the same reply "Cheap & broken after a few months don't buy them." Some people have gotten a bad set of CH pedals where a wire gets pinched. It happens. Call the company and ask for a replacement, or refund, but pounding the boards like a spoiled little girl isn't going to help you with that $100.

First off I have contacted the company & under warranty I will be taken care of hopefully? Also there is an issue with the this headset & I am not the only one who has reported it out of the thousands that have been sold. The issue with them is that it takes time for the defect to occur in my case almost 9 months.
A $100.00 dollars is not that big a deal to me I am fortunate enough to have hardly been touched in this economy others in our community have left the game as they can't even justify the $15.00 a month to keep playing.

So if one person thinks twice about buying this headset & keeps them in game rather than pulling out of AHII I would say well worth putting my two cents in on a few threads on the BBS.

If you don't like it mute me forever on the BBS. :aok

Earforce X11 by turtle beach...had them 2 years & like them a lot. They're not $100 headphones, but I nearly always can hear exactly where the approaching GV is down to 5-10 degrees. I have lobbed shells toward the noise & been told by Storch my round landed right next to them.  :rock I know that's the sound card & realtek virtual headphones, but I like it a lot.  :salute
