I have to say if I played any other instrument it would be the trombone.

The first one's the hardest.  The rest are just learning the motions...  reading the music and learning time is harder than anything else IMHO.

Another fun one if you ever get a chance to learn is Tuba.  That instrument is a blast.

Tenor Sax is best Sax.

Flutes were rather easy, I wanted a challenge, so I became a trom boner. The flute wasn't loud enough to be in the band.

Rhythm don't me squat when you're playing a song that changes time every couple of measures (3/4 - 4/4 or 7/4 however you want to count it....)

Title: Re: Flute players
Post by: TequilaChaser on November 19, 2011, 10:22:38 PM
cheers back at you.. but regardless of the COUNT or MEASURE... you still got to keep rhythm....... it is the same  rhythm =  beat ........ , I don't care if you playing Brass, winds, woods or whatever  you got to keep rhythm/count.....  F it up and the whole song is screwed....

unless there is some new way of doing it that I am clueless about..... but then again  I study the guitar/banjo/mandalon..... I don't play no brass

the drums  or bass ( or both ) are the ones that "keep rhythm" .... or  "keep count".......... if the Drummer or Bass is no good then none of you are........ ( am thinking Tuba  for Bass in this scenario, since we talking brass... )

but again, cheers

Keeping time is just another way of saying it.  Think of a clock, if it don't keep time it's worthless.

Title: Re: Flute players
Post by: Jenks on November 20, 2011, 01:29:14 PM
Pfft...horn players......they never make rehearsal, they show up 5 minutes before the gig, they want their pay after the first set so they can leave before the last set saying " My lips are bleeding! ".

Only thing worse is a harmonica player. He shows up 20 minutes before the gig and wants his money now, then insists on playing a solo nearly every song and every verse.  And as a group harmonica players have the worst sense of rhythm.

And Uptown....they like to called Flautists.  :lol

No I would say keeping the internal beat is more important.  Rhythm is just the way the notes are written on the page.  Being able to play on or slightly behind the best for a better feel is extremely hard and take years to develop.  You can't keep the rhythm you can only keep the beat.  Rhythm != Beat.

I play guitar, trying to learn blues harp and used to play sax in high school. My pervious post was just a joke as I'm a big Jethro Tull fan. Playing any instrument, whether it be a concert grand or a pair of spoons is cool in my book.  :aok

Let me be more clear "!=" means does not equal.  Rhythm and beat are not the same nor will they ever be or have been.  Rhythm is not the same as the beat ever.

ok this is Burger King, have it your way  :D  I am not going to argue the point anymore

edit: but please do show me where  "!="  means  does not equal!  please.......  you lost me there.........  I let that go right over my head if many others knew the meaning of "!="

edit 2:  rhythm = beat , = measure = count or = count = measure..... all in the same to me .......  not counting or disregarding riffs, fills, bridges, etc......

One is fretted, the other isn't. One has a bow, the other doesn't.

It's like saying that if you can play the snare drum in a marching band, you can play a drum kit. Sorta, but not really.

Yes, that is true, but you could still play the easy stuff if you know the other.

Title: Re: Flute players
Post by: SELECTOR on December 13, 2011, 03:53:07 PM
Having played Sax for over 25 years, and having the whole set, i can tell you this:
Oddballs play the bass sax
to play the soprano you need to be able to talk street and mispronounce every second word.
alto is really for girls.
baritone is for men with lambchop sideburns
and tenor (which is my main instument) helps with the ladies..
as for the flute most pro sax players have one but will not come out of the closete and admit it.
you will never get me to admit it, never, never.
