Gotten into tanking / gv's for the past few months and have encountered a glitch (at least on my end) w/ tank shells at close range. Typically I drive a T-34. When I'm at a range of 1 - 2K or better the shells target fine. When I'm at close range, inside say 100 - 200 meters off an enemy tank more times than not the shells literally pass straight through the hull or turret.
For the last couple of months I've been playing on an antiquated PC just slightly faster than a Commadore 64, could be a contributing factor.
Was just curious if anyone else has encountered this.
Thanks,

Probably something to do with the graphics. I can't imagine its a bug in the game or anything. Possibly lag, but seems a bit unlikely.
My suggestion would be to ditch the T-34 and hop in a Panzer IV Ausf. F2.
1) same ENY = same perks earned
2) better gun = quicker kills and fewer tanks that will scare the crap out of your T-34's crew
3) better gun = longer ranged shots = no ghost round problems
4) better gun = longer ranged shooting = less deaths=more time spent playing = more fun
5) its german .

I haven't seen shells pass through the target, but I've been convinced for some time that from within 300 yards or so hits are less effective.
I see hit sprites but a shot that would normally be a kill from @ the 800 - 1000 yard mark seems to do nothing up close.
I also suspect that it may just be my perception in the heat of an "Ahhhhh!! I'm gonna die!!!" battle moment.

I've actually been in tanks when the bad guy's round goes through my engine/hull. It just erved as a warning to me that he was getting too close... Ironwood shrub, here I come!!!
-
I will give german tanks a try. When I first started tanking, I chose the Panzer. I don't remember if I had this issue or not (slept since then).
Most of these occur when the enemy tank is so close it fills 60-70% of the sights. At times there's a big birm directly on the other side of him & see the round pass without a hit sprite then poof directly behind him in the birm.
Insert dancing banana for added effect
A snappy :salute for your input

I've encountered the same bug... it seems to be most prolific if hitting at the bottom of the turret/top of the side area of the tank. The shell will pass right between the turret and the treads. Front or rear shots don't seem to do this. I'll have a side shot go right through the tank, and actually see the puff of dirt go up behind the tank where my shell hit.
-
Some appear to hit, when they really don't - tank shells arn't the size of the tank, what appears to be a hit, might instead be a glancing blow off the armor, rear shots are most common with ricochets, or bad angle shots.
If you film it - you can review the film at a slower speed and see exactly where you hit, more often then none - you either glanced off the armor, or completely missed, however the hit sprites do happen, even if its not a kill shot.

or many times ur round will penitrate but wont do any damage ( kill gunners drivers explode ammo stores...)

I don't recall ever having a driver/gunner killed, be interesting if our damage model included this.
-
I've had it say my driver is wounded, but it always results in an automatic, all-expense-paid trip to the tower.
-
Happens to me all the time. It's a load of bs
-
Seems it has been happening of late. The Tank I shot in TT PMed me and said "I couldn't believed you missed me". Round went though turret and disappeared. There was a hill behind him and no dirt splash seen.
Of course his Tank didn't suffer from same affliction. :uhoh
-
probably tank's not really there when ya squeeze the shot off. IMO :salute

Oh he's there alright lol. Cause as soon as my "phantom shell" does zero damage the enemy turret draws a bead on my tank and I get that all expense paid one-way trip to the :lol tower !
-
I am going to take Butcher's advice and film some sorties and review from different angles & film speeds. When It does happen, I do not see hit sprites. My ricochet shots always produce a hit sprite with the shell glancing off in one direction or another, but not directly behind the target (continued path of the shot).
In one side of the armor, through the driver's Battlestar Galactica lunchbox & out the other side.

Definitely a +1 to improved tank damage.

Definitely a +1 to improved tank damage.
I dont see anything wrong with the modeling, I get nasty pm's from time to time about some bs shot I made, or how he hit me so many times I should be dead...
But I have a pretty good understand of shell penetration at different ranges, amour thickness, and how the all important deflection works.
I have a feeling most dont understand how all of these factor in together and assume if they hit a take and see a sprite that that means it should=a kill. But that isnt the reality of things

Well, it'd be kinda fun to have an oil/gas tank pinged and holed, then drive away leaving a ver precise trail, don't you think?

Oh, you meant more variation of damaged received. Yeah that would be nice to have

Ever notice it happens more so on the first point blank shot but not the second or third? That seems to be the case in my situation. Me thinks HTC has modeled something in to the game regarding the [insert proper term here], the phenomenon where the projectile it going too fast and shatters on impact instead of performing. Until HTC says differently that is how I'll role play the issue anyways. ;)

First, second, third on the same tank or just consecutive targets?
Cumulative damage?
I've also noticed that there are definitely specific spots to hit to get a sure kill, which I miss quite often.
Have you ever seen the shadow most tanks throw? There's a HUGE gap between the body and turret.

Its wierd. I've only had problems with killing tanks twice in my entire AH carreer. Both were definite hacks (multiple [as in upwars of 10] AP shells into all areas of the vehicle. Turret, driver's possition, engine, ammo rack areas, you name it).
Only other time I've even seen some screwy stuff going on is when I survived 3 88mm rounds from a Tiger I in a T-34/76, and then one-shotted him as he pulled across my line of fire. This was back around 2008 or so.
-
I landed 34 hits on a TigerII from my tiger and watched someone else put a bunch more into him.
I got tired of waiting so I flanked him, parked nearby hidden, left keyboard and earned the kill AFK.
-
I've seen this happen. I assume it's a graphics glitch.
-
I will add some of my observations, as I spend most of my time in a Gv.
It is possible even at close range to miss or deflect a shot if not placed properly
I have told people this but they don't listen, you have to have proper range. I hear them complain that they placed round after round on target to no effect, when in fact they were just bouncing/deflecting shells.
A "small" white burst means you did not penetrate with your shot. In fact if you watch closely you will sometimes see the shot deflected nearby on the ground etc.
A "larger" more pronounced white burst means you have hit it at correct range and it has penetrated.....usually one to two shots will be all it takes. If you are seeing small white bursts you are not ranged properly, it means your rounds are too far out...in effect your shell is bouncing off. If this happens you need to dial your scope back a few notches/ ie decrease range....shoot and you will make proper contact with tank downrange....this applies for close up as well.
Tigers/Panthers have thicker armor in the front and are best shot low on the side or in the rear. 1 shot in the side is all it takes to kill them. If they are facing you and you are shooting round after round....deflecting all you are doing is giving away your position and will soon be dead if they have you dialed in. The solution for this is proper flanking and popping them in the side.
I will stop there givin my gv knowledge away. :salute
This would be a large burst from my tour in....Iraq 2003

This should work

I have films gallore of this. i posted a few a while back. I've had it happen at over 2Kyds before so it's not just limited to close range, though it does occur more frequently at close range.
Everytime this is brought up everyone wants to blame it on lag. But lag has nothing to do with this. If it had been happening since GV's were introduced then MAYBE we could blame it on lag but it hasn't been going on that long. I don't remember when it started but it was after one of the big updates. It's a bug somewhere in the coding and I guess HTC hasn't found it yet. I would love to see it fixed though, probably half my deaths come from not killing someone on the first shot because my round went through them :bhead

How far away were you?
At 2.5K or more the 8.8 on a Tiger 1 won't penetrate the frontal armor of a Panther, much less a Tiger 2. Well okay, if you hit the Panther just right you might do it. Maybe...
Today I sat and took round after round after round from 76 gun Shermans, 17 lb. Shermans, and M18's @ a range of 1,200 meters in my Tiger 2. Scratched the paint a little, but I pretty much 1-shot all 17 of the uppers. Not once did I fire first on any of those vehicles, and almost all of them hit me before I even saw them.
I spend... 80% of my AH time in GV's. In... 5 or so years of playing Aces High I don't think I've had any magic tank rounds go through a target without a hit sprite. I've had AP rounds go through vehicles without doing any damage, usually M3's, though. But that is a lightly armored vehicle and if you don't hit anything vital I expect a high velocity round to simply pass right through.

I've recorded some film since starting this thread. I'll film some more sorties over the weekend then review from various angles and film speeds.
If anyone else has film of this happening feel free to post.
If anyone has any midget porn feel free to post that too. :x

Well hows this to stir the pot. Just playing I shot a guy with an AP round from a Panzer H into the underside of his Panzer H and he did not die. I know this doesn't go with directly with the passing through of shots or maybe it does but its still clearly bullcrap
-
I refuse to up Tiger II's. Every time I've upped one, I've been one shotted in the frontal armor by an M4 at 2000+ yards, ridiculous. Tiger I's and Panthers work best for me, they actually deflect some rounds.
As for the argument that it's a ricochet, I'd like to point out that I'm well aware and can tell the difference... Once you see the shell bounce off at a different angle. The bug that is being discussed is when you hit a tanks square, get no hit sprite, no ricochet, and the round simply passes right through it. For me, I can see the puff of dirt coming up behind my target in these instances that lets me know exactly where the round hit... and I'll normally review it from multiple angles in video when I get really urked about it.
Poster earlier hit the nail on the head in referencing the fact that there are two separate objects for the turret and superstructure of the tank. You can see this in how they cast shadows. It seems to me that there's an area where the overlap isn't correct on the objects and it allows rounds to pass harmlessly through air, where there should be tank.

If you have a film of you shooting, that you reviewed , and think there is a problem, send it to us.
The film contains data that we can either find a bug, or describe to you the exact dynamics of what happen.

i notided this too, it seems the boundary between different armor hardness on tanks at close range is also expanded to a point where the width of the boundary equals the diameter of hte shell and passes right through the boundary area. My solution and it seems to work is use your coaxe gun until you get nice bright hits, then pull the other trigger, so far i have gotten kills.

Will do. I have lots of them and add to the collection everyday.

Silly question, but to what address? This happened to me last night, and I filmed it.

I just did. It shows one round bouncing off and the other not registering at all. I sent the film to you guys.
The shots were fired very close, probably 100 feet away. Would an AP round from a Flakpanzer bounce of the right-front of a T34 at that range?
-
Round do go through the gv's.. I've seen many, many times watching a countryman shoot/get shot where the round goes through his or his target's gv and hits behind it.. sometimes he dies.. sometimes just accumulates damage.. As far as I know they all count as hits, but the round does not stop at the object.. Once I was parked close behind a friendly T34 in a M3, and 1 shot killed us both.
-
Today at the famous 135 spawn I saw a round come right through my field of vision as I was in the #2 position as an orange streak. I heard the round impact behind me. The very next round I took killed me. The previous round seemed to have the appearance of passing through me with no damage. I did not have film rolling, the next time im there I will and see if it happens again.
