so my daughter went to the dentist today, shes almost 2. she fell and chipped her top front tooth is the reason she went. She came out with a SILVER GRILL   I didnt go with her was working, the dentist told the wifey that she had a couple cavities forming on the lower teeth so he crowned all her lower teeth. But was looking online and one place said that they only crown severly rotten teeth and her teeth are far from rotten. I know that they fall out but a totally silver mouth. WTF!!
-
Weird, I'm no dentist or no health professional, but this certainly doesn't sound normal. Multiple cavities forming before age 2! Either you feed her exclusively sweet tarts and soda, her teeth are abnormally weak, or the dentist wanted to make a little extra money.
Again, far from a professional on this, I hope someone comes along who knows what they're talking about.
-
Aspen Dental?
Bummer deal though. She won't even have them much longer at 2, those will fall out anyway.

i am not certain of the validity of this, but i have been told that it is important for a child to keep their baby teeth for as long as possible, the baby teeth guide in the adult teeth and help them stay straight or something like that......
again like i said, i dont know if that is a valid certified truth.
-
Dentist wrecked my back teeth for extra cash when i was 16, im sure of it. Maybe i needed a bit of work but what he did was way over the top. I don't trust dentists.
-
Dentist have a bad habit of making things sound worse than they are or just claiming things are amiss for a quick buck.

About 8 years ago, when my nephew was about 4, he was hit in the mouth by a football or some other kind of ball. It killed one of his upper fronts. I can't remember all the particulars, but I remember it wasn't as simple as pulling it early, because of what Floatsum said. Think he eventually had to go to an orthodontist to keep his teeth straight, and he was only about 5 or 6.
I cracked one of my back molars last week, and they started the capping process yesterday morning. It's not pleasant.

That stuff isn't cheap. The crown for me is $650, but insurance takes care of about half of it. He said if I need a root canal, it would be another 750. I could of had it pulled for $50. However, since i'm 48 years old and still have all my teeth, I would do my part and keep the tooth count per Oklahoman up. :)

We all know that you only have to have 2 teeth to be above average in Oklahoma :neener:

lol, good to know I'm a top 1%er in something good! :)
-
first and last time I went, had a wisdom tooth pulled. he stitched my cheek to my gum couldnt open my mouth, so I stretched it out and cut the stitches out myself, for a grand total of 16 1/2 inches of thread for 1 tooth :O and still have all of it as a keepsake lol

Heh.
All of my top fronts are implants (car accident)
Costed about $2400/tooth
-
I had a crown done a few months back. They matched the color of the tooth so it looks like a tooth. No silver stuff.

That sucks dude. I had 4 pulled last month with no stitches. Went skiing in the mountains 4 days later. I was comfortably numb for a good 2 days though. :aok

Get a new dentist.
-
You need a second opinion and you need one now. There is a scam among unprofessional dental offices (chain type stores) to perform this type of unnecessary work. This can affect your daughters teeth for a lifetime. Im no dentist but have seen this type of work performed before for medical billing purposes. Do not go to a Dentist-R-Us type dental office like aspen dental or castle dental. Go to a stand alone office that has a good reputation in your vicinity. Do your homework and get a second opinion ASAP.
-
Sounds like a poor dentist. You don't have any recourse though as someone OK'd him to do what he did.
-
This is why I don't trust the dental system at all

Just an FYI about orthodontist. It is recommended to see an orthodontist for children around age 12. If my parents had taken me I would have had a better set of teeth. My teeth were crowded and needed an upper pallet spreader to widen my upper back teeth. It's a fairly cheap thing to get. Had my parents took me in, I would have saved a lot of pain and money. I ended up having to get braces in my early 20's. Teeth like to rotate (at this in my case) when crowded together. Why age 12? That is the time before the upper pallet in a person's mouth hardens into bone. The upper pallet usually hardens around ages 17-18 and an upper spreader won't work after that.

yeah she has an opointment to see another dentist on tuesday to see if all of this was unnecessary. I dont see why he did it I mean her teeth were as white as paper. Contacted several dentists today while I was at work and they all seem to think it was way overboard, no xrays or anything. I feel like taking a crowbar to the guy if this other dentist says it was uncalled for :devil but the wifey wont let me

IF the child goes to another dentist.... send an adult with the child.

lol shuffler my ol lady was there but he mentioned nothing of doing all the crowns

This person/dentist was in the room with your child all alone with no parent supervision??
Sorry for the questions but it seems now that we are missing some of the story. Obviously you want input since you posted here on the boards.
What I understand so far is your wife took your small child to a dentist and he did a bunch of work without your wife's authorization or knowledge.
Is this correct?
-
correct. She wasnt allowed in the room while he worked, I guess a lot of dentists here in vt and nh are the same, as some guys I work with said they werent allowed in the room either
-
from my understanding the kids are calmer when the parents arent there??? ok I ont think I agree with this but thats their policy, a coworker also uses this dentist for his kids

If a tooth has taken a hit it might have come somewhat loose. The ligaments holding the tooth can have been stretched but can firm up after a while, so the tooth may need to be fixated, to give it rest. This can be done with a metal wire attached to the neighboor teeth(s) and depending on the occlusion the wire can be placed either on the front or the back of the teeth. After some time the wire can be removed, depending on how big a hit the tooth had taken.
Capping teeth (ceramic or metal/gold) involves taking impressions of the teeth, so a dental lab can make the crowns to fit 100% correct. This is a process that usually takes several days and not something that is made on a single visit. It's not just large amalgam fillings in the lower teeth?
Just trying to get a better understanding about what treatment has been made.
If someone comes in with a chipped tooth, the first thing I would do would be to take an x-ray, so that sounds strange.
-
had them fax what was done this morning and it says: code-02930 prefab. stainless steel crown primary. All jibberish to me but I looked it up last night and a crown has to be fitted over the tooth, so the tooth has to be ground down inorder for it to go over. everyone I talked to said he should have xrayed, but I have no clue and each individual tooth has this on it

Shark in the water!!! :bolt:
-
That does sounds strange. I don't have experince with US dentistry, but generally, capping primary (milk) teeth isn't something that is normal praxis over here. Using pre-fabricated steel crowns is also very little used. Like you said a lot of tooth have to be grinded down to make them go on, and unless the cavity was very big that seems like a big overkill.
-
Shark in the water!!! :bolt:
Not really.
The story, "My kid went to the Dentist for a chipped tooth and came home with a silver grill" demands scrutiny.
Not because we don't believe the O.P., but because we are wondering why/how it could happen.
Yep, I'm a Father of two and they have had many a dental procedures. None of which resulted in a new set of chrome chompers.
EDIT: I should also mention that I just spent 6K on new teeth for myself. They had to gas and drug the hell out of me in order to grind my teeth into nubs before capping them.
EDIT2: No, I'm not from England. I spent many years living way too hard. :lol

I'd be pissed homer.
A full investigation is in order.
Any after pics?

do yall think crowbar to dentist?
I'm shocked at what I see.
Number one... Keep calm at home, especially in front of the child.
Number two... Take the child to another dentist for a second opinion.
Number three... Crowbar the chopper for what he did (if warranted).
-
Take plenty of pics and some video of her trying to hide from the mutilation the dentist did. You just hit the lottery homersipes. Contact an attorney.

-
he did all this in less than an hour
-
Go get a second opinion, make some calls.
-
If you are positive your wife didn't authorize the work I think you need to talk to a lawyer. If there was insurance involved in all this you might call and talk to someone there, as if the work was unnecessary then they are being defrauded.
-
I know she didnt say to do THIS, I mean she said the only thing she signed was a release about restraing her in the room. I know if we did go to court all he would say is "she gave me consent" then its her word vs his. I am going to talk to the tardhobag and other names on monday to find out exactly why what and what was said. we already have another dentist appointment lined up. I dont know much about the whole legal thing with his word vs her word, that would be like a verbal contract right?? I dont know but I would LOVE to send my 2" wrench through his face lol. This whole thing is really getting to me, damage is done cant reverse. I have looked all this up online and crowns usually take more than 1 visit to put them on he did 8 in less than an hour. 2 top fronts which is why she went(are white by the way), all 4 bottom fronts and 2 bottom molars.
-
my gf is 45 and i can go in the room when she's there. actually my dentist doesn really have rooms more like open spaces with walls. my daughter was 18 when she had her wisdom teeth taken out. i was there the whole time.
if the doctor wont let you in with our child or he insists on you having to sign a paper before he does any work, walk out the door.
i went to one dentist who insisted on having me sign a waiver saying if there was any problems i had to go to mediation. when i he wouldnt see me because i didnt sign it, I walked out the door.
my current dentist while not inexpensive, i trust. he's done about 30k dollars worth of work on m3, my kids and my gf over the past 5 or 6 years. he's written off a couple of thousand dollars off from my own work. and i always refer people to him. and I tell them the same thing. trust is worth the money you spend.

The picture of her lower incisors do not show gross caries present when you zoom in. How recent is that picture?
You said the Dentist did not take any pre-op x-rays (before any work was performed)? That
Seems very strange. When she chipped her upper incisors, did the lowers incisors suffer any trauma?
I would definitely get a second opinion from a recommended Pedodontist. You may want to consult with two or
Three and find out what your options are for replacing those anti esthetic stainless steel crowns. She won't start to lose her primary teeth until she is four or five years old. That is a long time.
Did they restrain your daughter? Did they use nitrous oxide?
When you go for your second opinion, be prepared! They are going to ask lots of questions.
Something that the next dentist is going to ask:
Does your daughter still drink from the baby bottle?
Does she drink a bottle before going to sleep at night?
Who brushes her teeth?
Good luck.
:salute
-
damage is done cant reverse.
This is where you are wrong.
Act cool for the child's sake.
Be deliberate and professional in your dealings.
Everything will be alright in the end, provided you handle the situation properly. Mano knows.

(http://i755.photobucket.com/albums/xx199/homersipes/crowns.jpg)do yall think crowbar to dentist?
Um, yeah.... Was this Dr. Nick Riviera's school of toothology? No way in hell that was done properly.
-
Call the medical board for your state to see if this dentist is licensed and also to see if he has a complaint history. once you get your ducks in a row make your complaint on his conduct and unneccesary work performed.
-
the first pic is less than a week ago before she went to the tard, we took the pic of them last night. as far as her lower teeth being hit, I dont believe so, he told my wife she had a small cavity forming on her lower front, but I aint no dentist but a small cavity doesnt need a friggin crown. if he did say he was going to do something to them he sure didnt say that this would be the end result.
-
A small cavity would require a small filling. Contact the state dental board. They will ask for a copy of all x-rays and he has to comply. If he runs an office that does not maintain accurate records including pre-op x rays and/or photographs they may suspend his license until this matter has been resolved. Ask your insurance company to stop payment on her treatment. That puts the insurance company on notice that something is wrong in this office. There may be similar disputes from this office that warrant further investigation.
Good luck

I had some pain from my back tooth last weekend. I call Monday morning, and they say come in at 1:30pm the same day. The doc looks around and sees a crack in my tooth. he says it needs a crown or pulled. Crown is 325, or 50 bucks after insurance. I say crown it. They make an appointment me to come in two days later. He grinds that tooth down (not pleasant) and makes like 5 molds of my tooth. After he gets through grinding my tooth down to a nub, he puts a temporary cap on it. I go back on the 29th to get the permanent cap. How I knew somthing was wrong? Every time I ate or drank something hot or cold, it hurt like a sob.
-
yeah I already called the insurance they have an oral surgeon that is going to review what was done. Only problem was that he did not exray or anything, so he covered everything up already. I dont know if an xray will show anything now or not, as I said before I dont know much about any of this crap. thanks for all the input yhus far into this. I think I might contact a lawyer on tuesday, or should I wait for the second opinion??
-
Dont know if this guy still practices but he used to be the best around for dental malpractice. Have not talked to him for years but he is an obtuse, aggressive dude.

Thanks Shamus, tried to call and got answering machine so I just wrote to him, so I am assuming that he is still around. need to vent over all of this.
this whole thing is breaking me down everytime I see her teeth I just want to cry(I dont cry about anything lol) dont know if its tears of madness or sadness or a mix of both. I dont let on to her about it but well any of yall with kids know how it is. :bhead :bhead :bhead :bhead time to go take frustrations out on the dirtbike or something.

The other day, the first thing they did was do an xray. I stood up next to a machine, and it did a 180 scan of my grill. A few moments later, I was sitting in the exam chair with a flat screen in front of my face with the 180 xray view of my grill. I pointed to the tooth that was hurting, and she said 'huh" maybe the doc will see something. He did....
-
Yeah i think thats how its supposed to work, xrays then take the steps to follow it up. not oh well this is what I want to do today so here we go
-
Before you take up plastic surgery via crowbar, let's eliminate every possibility of you or your wife making a mistake.
1.) Get a copy of everything that you signed. Review it carefully with an attorney.
2.) Get plenty of pictures of her mouth from before the operation, both on a regular camera and x-rays.
3.) Do the same for after.
4.) Go to the best dentist that you can find, and have him look over the papers and pictures to see if the dentist who performed the procedure had the right to (see step 1)
While doing this, don't freak out around her. Just go about your business as usual as best you can. Once you've cleared yourselves of blame, then get that same attorney to sue that dentist and/or chain for everything they're worth. Once the battle is over, get your daughter's mind checked to see if she's traumatized, and get care (therapy, meds, a big honking chocolate bar) if she needs it. All the while, make sure to not work as hard on other projects, and leave yourself time to relax so that you can focus on getting the legal stuff done slowly and deliberately. If all goes well and you win the suit, stash the money in her college fund so that she'll have some catharsis for what she's been through (don't mention to her too early, though).

You should file a complaint with your states' State Board of Dental Examiners.
Also doc should have ALL procedures listed and signed off on and written consent given. Verbal doesn't cut it.
-
I calle dental board yesterday, they are closed over the weekend so I get to call again tomorrow as well as the dentist that did this to find out EXACTLY why this was done and what was said between him and my wife. She says the only thing that she signed was a release about constraint, he had mentioned fixing a small cavity in her lower front tooth she thoght a filling not this friggin crap. just have to wait until tomorrow to do anything. yeah I thought everything was supposed to be in writing also
-
wait until tuesday to call, tomorrow is a federal holiday government buildings in NH are closed.

There is an ad playing on the local radio stations where I am from that asks parents if this kind of Dental Scam has happened to them and their children. It then invites them to contact a lawyer or law office that is filing a class action suite...The monetary compensation that the victims will receive if they sign up for the class action is a tiny fraction of what they could get if they pursued their matters individually in separate cases. I hope you find justice in this matter. <S>
-
Homer,
Give me a call on my 408 number
-
Worse comes to worse. Just start calling her "Tucco"
haha
-
so I just called the dentist he said that he found "severe decay" from where I look I dont see it. Oh yeah and he turned it around and said that he explained what was going to be done to my wife. I highly doubt it though because I know for a fact if she knew the outcome she would have walked out the door
