I've got a small 8'x4' garden, and I'm in my third season.  I'm learning, and it's getting better.  I put some garlic in last fall and am looking forward to it in 4 months or so.

I have..or did this summer but unfortunately it came to a crashing halt a few weeks ago .... I bought my dog one of those big tennis balls (they are the size of a soccer ball) as he is very old and his teeth aren't what they used to be so he can't destroy it in 30 seconds flat...in any case, there he was messing about with his ball when he flicked it into the garden... This dog would get kicked off a golf course with all the divots he makes just flicking and chasing balls... need less to say my crop was flattened ... the only survivors were the celery (damn that stuff is resilient) and some of the tomatoes (the plants are flat on the ground but still producing fruit even with the root system exposed) ... oh yeah and some sweetcorn but that is in a totally different area.

Nice Jayhawk .

SPKmes , you can do like I had to do and put up a hot wire around it . If it was not for that wire the deer would wipe me out in one night .
The price on stuff now day's make's it worth the while to have one and if time's get bad like what I have been hearing on TV it's a good thing to have . Just think if something did happen at lest you would have something to eat .

Our garden ranges is size every year (last two years we've been too busy to plant), but we usually plant around 50 tomato plants, a lot of purple hull peas, green beans, squash, banana peppers.  That's pretty much it.  I love the taste of homegrown purple peas and green beans, but I don't eat many tomatoes.

I had 25 tomato plant's last year and I don't eat that many but I can most of them for soup and just to drink right out of the jar . I could set down and drink a hole jar right now , lol .

Just finished putting in potatoes and red onions. Way too early in a normal year, but I took a chance.

I tilled the garden the first time in the middle of January. Unheard of here in Missouri tilling in January.  :noid

I do it for the taste and variety of produce, and I got spoiled when I was young.  :D

I have about a 20'x20' garden.  We grow peas, serranos, jalapenos, tomatoes, cabbage(which has never turned out well), and some strawberries.

We grow many things in the garden, flowers, tomatoes, chives, green onions but mostly flowers.

There are hummingbirds that nest somewhere in my yard, havent found a nest yet but they're always around so we plant flowers just for them. Living up in Canada our growing season is short and some plants just dont have the time to finish growing.

It's usually end of May before we get around to planting, last year we only put in a couple of tomatoe plants and flowers but hopefully this year we can do a proper garden!

   :salute
PS: we usually have some unique variaties of flowers!

I have never grown tobacco but I think unless the climate and soil is correct for it (which I don't think DFW is), is going to be challenging to say the lest..

quick google search yielded.

I pull up or kill weeds, legal or otherwise.

Thanks for the info Ardy123.

Does anybody on here grow their own tobacco for their own use?

Very cool guy's <S> .
tmetal , I mastered the art of growing tobacco a few year's back and it was the best I have ever smoked . One thing tho , do not Handel them without glove's on or you will get nicotine poison . They are easy to grow but very very hard to get started . If you decide to grow some and have any question PM me and I will be glad to help . Here's a pic of my last crop . I let it hang in the shop for a hole year before I cure it .There about half grow in that pic .

How about some more pictures of the various gardens or boxes?

I don't have anything growing at our new house, but at my old house, I did the 'tree' type stuff -- mangos, avocados, lemons, papaya, and bananas, all started from seedling or tiny tree (under 2-3 feet).  Once we're settled in here, I'm going with boxes and above ground.

I have  not tried to grow in boxes but would make thing's more easier to handle . I did not take any pic for the last few year's . Don't know why , but here's a pic of my tomato's a few year's back . There not very old there. They got over my head when they were done. you can see the tobacco in the back grown .

Nothing better then garden tomatos.............Bread, Mayo and tomato, salt and pepper.......repeat  :lol

I do a 12x30 garden every year, everything from Tomatos to peppers( green and thai chillis Haberano ect), cukes, squash, and corn. Im fortunate that although we have alot of deer, my property backs up to corn fields, THey also spend time around my apple and quince trees so they leave the garden alone most of the time.

I don't have a conventional garden, I do have an aquaponics system however, growing fish and vege's together in my backyard.

Here's a pic of the actual system :

Basically a large fish tank below a grow bed for the plants, water is pumped from the tank to the grow bed, and returns to the tank through a siphon type device, the fish waste feeds the plants and

the plants clean the water, all I add is fishfood and the occasional top-up of water when evaporation takes a toll.

Here's a couple of trout we pulled out last year :

Beans and pumpkin growing :

corn and tomatoes that are growing at the moment :

Last years harvest of silver perch :

It's a great way to grow healthy food at home, this is just a small system as we have a small yard, but it can scale to any size, have even seen people running tiny ones using a normal goldfish bowl

some small system examples here

Wife and I grow garden, and daughter helps some. We grow beans , tomatoes, sweet corn, pumkins, potatoes, and basil and other odds and ends. I use 3 hot wires for protection and it is not foolproof with the sweet corn. Also plant some field corn for the critters.

I use a ford 8n or a massey ferguson 50, old 2 bottom plow, old disc, old John Deere model 99 horse drawn 2 row planter which has been converted to 3 point.. Also use cut corn stalks for mulch on some of it. Works to a point.

Wife works fulltime now and she did alot of hand weeding, I do the rototilling and some handweeding. Last year we were overgrown with weeds and could not keep up. Probably plant more sweet corn and less small stuff that needs more attention.

That's way cool steely07 . I have been doing my research on doing the same thing . I all ready have the rock's and the tank and the little basket's to plant in . Just got to set it all up . That's the way to go if you have a small place and wow at how big the fish are . How big were they when you put them in the tank ?
EDIT: Sound's like you got it all together cattb. I just sold my 8n and got a ford 3000 .
@Banshee7 - I'm really in MS on the south side of Enid lake . We need to hook up and do some fishing .

Good to hear you're thinking of doing something similar Flench, I think it's a great way to go, no weeding, no watering, just feed the fish and nature does the rest :)

Those Silver Perch were about 6cm (3 inches) or so when they went into the tank, they grew to that size in about 9 months, were very tasty as well.

We also didn't buy any tomato's for about 9 months of last year, had to give a bunch away as well, they were coming out our ears!

My only wish is to move to a bigger place so I can set up a much larger system and become a little more self-sufficient.

I've been saying ever since my grandfather sold his boat that I was going to buy one.  that's one thing I love to do, and I haven't done it in a couple of years.  My best friend's dad is on Strike King's pro staff Crappie Team (and he's actually filmed two shows that's aired with them!).  We always trolled Reelfoot Lake up here.  The last Time I was in MS we fished Arkabutla.

@steely07 , do you use any fertilizer at all ? I was thinking about trying the PVC route .

No, 0 fertilizer, 0 chemicals, just fish food, the fish waste is rich in nitrites, naturally occurring bacteria in the grow bed converts this to nitrates and the plants use the nitrates as food.

It's an awesome way to grow food, we have people here in Australia who live in very dry climates and can't grow plants because they waste too much water, but this way you only replace a little water now

and then due to evaporation.

Today in Sydney for example, it's 35 degrees F (95C) and normal gardens are wilting and dying like mad, but mine is on a 5 min flood / 15 min drain cycle, so when I get home from work, all will be well :)

I don't eat catfish eather . Just Crappie and red snapper . You would or will have a BLAST if you come down here and do some trolling with me . I run Bandit crank bait's ( got over 100 of them)and crappie love them . I have  a 24 foot deck boat fixed up pretty nice . Hooked up a power supply on it last year where one can run a laptop or TV or what ever . I was using it last year for a fan and radio . Got a guest room too where one will not have to pay 100 buck's to lay their head down .
EDIT: You know Enid lake has the world record crappie on top of that .

My parents always had a garden in the backyard and when that wasn't enough, they rented community plots at a place called Greenmead, near where I grew up in Michigan.  Here's the best description I could find with a quick internet search: http://georgiastreetgarden.blogspot.com/2008/05/greenmead.html  The official city page about Greenmead doesn't have anything about the community plots unfortunately, just the historical site, so I gotta go with that link.

From what I remember, the keys are to water lots (probably even more important in the south), pull weeds, look for bugs eating everything and take measures if you find them.  If you think its going to be too wet, raise on mounds of dirt, if too dry, sink in depressions.  Corn and radishes were very easy and resulted in a large bounty for the effort, squash were way too much effort for the rewards, if you got any rewards at all.  Things like peas, stringbeans, peppers and watermelons were middle-ground effort to reward-wise.  My parents always planted marigolds (the flower) completely around the edges of every plot, they believed it kept critters out from eating everything.

Certain foods I had never consumed not fresh picked until I came to college.  Like brussel sprouts.  Brussel sprouts are awesome.  The ones you get frozen are horrible, kids are absolutely correct in refusing to eat them, because they instinctively know that isn't what brussel sprouts are supposed to taste like.

I'm trying to talk my friend who makes his own homebrew into growing his own hops.  That's something I'd like to try some day.

We had garden beside the house for years.  Finally two years ago the trees had grown so large the garden no longer got enough sun light.  Last year I bought 10 large double walled pots from Costco and put them on the back deck.  Got a very respectable harvest of tomatoes, peppers and various herbs.  The wife loves to walk out and pick what she uses to cook that evening.  When the garden was beside the house I would get down to it a couple times a week.  With it on the deck its more enjoyable since it is so much more accessible.

I used to have 40' of railing on our deck, now we have 40' of planters and only use a 3' x 12' strip of land along the driveway instead of half the back yard.

Much, much easier!

Cool, dude.  I'll look at my schedule for school and I'll see what I got going on.

I absolutely hate catfish lol.  I very rarely even eat it.  Arkabutla is home to some nice size Crappie.  So is Sardis.  I need to get back on the water...like I said I haven't done any serious fishing since I was in high school.

Every catfish I've eaten tastes worse than the mud I assume it was living in, how do you people eat those nasty grassy tasting fish, nevermind actualy crave one, is beyond me.

I usually grow 3-4 tomato plants, varying maturities, and size.  Usually 1 cherry or grape size, an heirloom or two, and then a plum or other meaty type.  Grew 4 eggplants last year, and they did amazing.  Also try to do a sweet type banana, or ancient pepper as well.

Now for fish!!!  Crappie, bluegill, perch.... All great eating!  My personal fav is northern, deep fry, bake or boil..... Mmmmm  :aok

Haven't found any other fish I dislike, raw or cooked, but catfish, blech.  Salmon I also shy away from these days, but I really enjoy it... it's just every restraunt, pub and even some catering trucks (and probabley comming soon to McDonalds) has two dishes with it, if it's not on special at said restraunt or your local market.... over-salmonification... related, I've been eating a lot of delicious farm-raised steelhead that's pretty cheap (comparatively) in the markets the last year.

Edit: forgot, I've had some grassy tasting Talapia before that I found inedable, but overall most talapia (usualy fried :devil ) dishes I like.

Actually that is companion planting. It does work to a point.

I've got one of these as well, an Aerogarden.  It's a pretty cool little device, and works real well.  It is extremely easy to manage and makes it easier if your climate makes it difficult to grow herbs a lot of the year.  It has gotten more noisy over a few cycles as the little pump is getting tired.

Flench, you have to take a look at your space and then think what is going to be cost effective to plant and tend and what is too much work and water for the actual store cost.  Since you are in Memphis ask around for ideas for a "truck garden".  They will know what you mean.  Things like potatos, peanuts, soybeans, and corn are almost far cheaper to buy than grow on your own unles you have acreage to spare.

Set aside 25% of your space for things that you love but don't normally buy much because of the cost, like asparagus, yellow, red, and orange peppers (all mild) and any other high end veggie or mellon.  The rest, seed what you love or always wish you had grown.  Hot peppers are a piece of cake, tomatoes need far more water and some shade.  Look for tomato varieties that do well in high iron soil.  Pole beans, green beans, purple hull peas, black eye peas, are all piece of cake to grow and maintain.  A hoe will be your best friend and give the kids ice cream to pull weeds.  Take a walk through the produce aisles at Kroger to get ideas.  Buy a few of what you like and scrape out the seeds and put into labeled brown lunch sacks to dry.  By the time you are ready to plant those seeds will be too.  PS--Okra is supposed to have needles on it and hurt like a biotch to pick.
