Title: EURO 2012 (football)
Post by: Bruv119 on June 09, 2012, 08:31:48 AM
So predictions to win ?

Russia were very impressive last night but I am going to go with England for the first time ever purely on the basis that they have had no hype or build up and can go into a major tournament expecting to lose.   This is when we do best as underdogs  :old:

'96 was the best team and chance for Engerland in my living memory. this time? I'll be pleasantly surprised if we survive the group stage :uhoh

Russia look very strong in their group. half the girls living near me are wearing Poland shirts, they look foxy, but not very happy after yesterday.

edit: tbh half of me doesnt want us to go through, I dont think I could handle losing to Germany on penalties again :bhead

Soon as Greece got that red card I went from neutral to supporting them and with a blatant penalty not given they deserved to win it 2-1.

as for Germany and penalties after watching Bayern we might have a chance  ;)

glad to see lusche and zack can stay on topic for 5 seconds   :lol

nope I'm talking about football the first official game of which was in 1888 in England  ;)

a red card is a player being sent off the pitch for the rest of the match and in this tournament format the player gets a 2 match ban.

In this case the Greek player picked up two extremely soft yellow cards that equals a red and therefore playing the remainder of the game with 10 players instead of the full 11.  If your kid had elbowed or head butted another player in the face they may have received a red card!

There was no such outrages behaviour when my sons played.   :old:

No wonder I never saw a red card.

Being Greek is difficult in these economic times.

:old: The Greeks deserve a pass on the field since they carry a heavy burden.

Yes it is true, football gives us a few short breaks from the advertisement variety show.

Lucky that the Dutch strikers lacked precision. They had 28 shots with only 5 of them on goal. We had 8 with 4 on target.

Yes, Sunday night, Ireland plays Croatia in our first match. The country will come to a halt. Even someone like me who isn't exactly a soccer fan will be watching.

Sadly Croatia will win 2-1 despite of our Italian manager.

I'm really pessimistic about our chances. But it will be fun while it lasts. Every second house will be decorated with patriotic flags as will the cars.

Great fun.

Much more fun than our so called national game.

Considering that he is 6'1" and only 175lbs, I don't think he'd be very good at either Oline or Dline. However, he can kick the ball over 60mph, roughly the same momentum as a baseball going 180mph

back on topic,

I'd go with Spain to beat Italy today.   I'm sure it will be full of drama and an Italian getting sent off or rolling around on the ground lots!!

Ireland have a good chance to get a result against Croatia with some experienced Premier league players in the twilight of their careers.

Didn't get to watch Spain vs Italy. :(

Moved into a new apartment and I don't have cable, spent 30 minutes trying to find a site that would let me watch the game without attacking my computer. Interesting side note- I've come across several awesome secrets for enlarging my PP and found christian singles in my area. More on that later...

I had been pretty impressed with Germany's play until yesterday, but I won't totally turn on them for one lethargic performance. And since I have no stake in the games I began rooting for Portugal after the Gomez goal, because I thought the game deserved to tie.

I can't remember which announcer it was but pre-game was boasting about the "clinical" finishing of the Dutch. Hoho!

spain vs Italy was interesting,  Spain played with no strikers and never really looked like breaking down the Italians.   Torres should have scored one of his two clear cut chances at the end for the win.   A draw was a fair result.

croatia have been lethal infront of goal so far hoping for a few more goals either way.

love getting paid to sit and watch 3 hours of football   :D

Cracking diving header from Shay Given!  :devil

Someone tipped me that the Republic would get to the semis... Slightly misguided! Glad I kept my tenner in my pocket!

As for England, we may get out of the group but I really can't see us progressing.

Italy impressed me against Spain, I hope Torres has a good tournament as we need him to perform next season, a couple of chances missed but his movement was good.

ENG-GERRR-LAND!!!!    :pray

well,

i placed 20 € on Fra vs Eng for a FRA victory
a second bet with 25 € on the combination FRA and SWE as winners

if both will happend, 363 € are mine tomorrow .....and as a backup i spend 15€ on UkR with a return of 39€......

   :lol

England without Rooney is half worth if you ask me  ;)
but honestly this all is only paperform, chess games, belonging to my feelings i would like to see france loosing dramaticly in the 90 minute by a 3:2 for England!

correct, but one can decide a match! Look at Torres yesterday, and you see what i mean, Rooney got it to decide a match

haha, i would only loose my 50€ i allways spent each Euro and World Champoinship, hope i will walk away with 550 € like in 2010. I seperated some money and bet on karke paul tips, he was right til the end....

Hopefully Ribery will break the funk the Munich players have been in lately. Robben choked for the Netherlands and only Boateng impressed me for Germany. Got a bit scared there when Schweinsteiger took that blow during that header. He broke his collarbone during Champions league against Napoli.

Very disappointed with the Ireland v Croatia, not with Ireland's performance. Only the most ardent fan actually thought they would win. In fact I had put 10 of my soon to be extinct Euro on a scoreline of 2 - 1 in favour of Croatia at 9/1. There is no patriotism or sentimentality when it comes to betting. But the Irish didn't even have the character to stop an average team from finishing them off 3 - 1.

Today I saw an Irish flag lying on the road where it had fallen off a car, constantly being run over. Says it all really, not just for the team but the state of the country right now.

As for England, a similar fate awaits. Maybe I can recover my money with a bet on France to win 2 -1. Much as I'd like to France to lose after the 'Thierry hand' incident.

didn't greece win?

some of our players have had a long season or are coming back from injuries.   If your not good enough to break through then you don't deserve the win!   like spain yesterday no end product apart from long shots outside the area.   If Ribery wasn't so fat and in his line of sight Joe Hart would have saved that shot!

Ribéry isn't fat, Hart just got destracted by the scars :p
Sorry England can't have Neuer or Howard as a Goalie.

very encouraging, good individual performances and for once we actually looked like a team. I'm happy with that :aok

You are French then I guess...because as usual England totally sucked yesterday.  It gets harder and harder to watch England play.  SO frustrating that such a talented side cannot display their talents on an international level.

4 -1 is too high, Ireland's tactics will be to 'park a bus' in defence. 2 - 0 or  2 -1 to Spain more likely.

Soccer is easy I could play it with my hands tied behind my back.
You've never played soccer then! If it was easy to be good anyone could playing in the big leagues. That's the charm of soccer, it looks easy and anyone can play the game and enjoy it. But there is a difference between the Sunday player and the pros.  My nephew has played at junior level for Ireland. At the moment he is marked for a career in the English Premier division if he keeps fit. When you watch him play you can see the vast gulf between the fun players and the real talent. He has that talent. It's hard to define but easy to see.

I hope to see him play for Ireland at senior level one day but interestingly he is English born and his Father is half English so if he's good enough they will snap him up. Which will make me an England supporter :uhoh

Soccer looks easy that's why it's so beguiling. Everyone in the stands and watching TV thinks they can be there. The truth it otherwise.

LOL  :rofl :aok

As to soccer not being brutal... Broke my leg earlier this year in a game... Took a slide tackle from the side, his studs hit the outside of my knee and pushed it inward next thing i felt was a crack. Then someone else fell on top of me and compounded the issue. I didnt even think of getting up I went straight into shock. Turns out the tendon tore a piece of bone off my tibia. Worst pain Ive ever expierenced in my life.

Top game to watch, not only for quality finish from carrol and Welbeck, but the commitment from both sides.
fantastic header by Carrol gave us hope but the Swedes rocked us badly.
An aged Sweden showed real fight and had the better game till the ARSENAL boy came on and won the game for us.

And if Gerard hadn't nicked the ball off the other ARSENAL boy with a wild punt into row Z it could have been 4-2.

Ukraine will be tough.  They will have massive support.

C'mon England

Very cute, we all know that there are scum that dive. However, the 3rd to last and the last, they look to have tripped on their own feet. Not that uncommon. Other sports have their divers as well, especially Basketball.

FINALLY!

I was only able to watch the second half of the England/Sweden game....but oh my goodness -THAT is what I have been waiting for for a couple of decades.  England (and Sweden too!) played with heart and skill.  At times the game was a bit scrappy but not in an unprofessional way.

Fantastic goals, fantastic game.  At last England has a team that I can support.

Notice it was the young players that provided the highlights.  Untainted by the previous methodology of English coaches.

Props to Sweden...they played a great game too.  Shame they are out of the competition.

I hope we aren't in for another roller coaster and a 3-0 win will be nice.  Potential egg on face moment if Ukraine win.

IF always a big IF we go through I would prefer us to play Spain after they looked ordinary last night.  If we lose we can say they are awesome and if we manage the un-thinkable and knock them out we can start believing!   :lol

after seeing a closer shot it looked like there was still 1/20th of the ball not fully over the line.  Plus the guy was definitely offside when they played it up the pitch.   so justice is served for once!!

I think Rooney had what 2 easy missed headers?? wasn't at all impressed with him when carroll did so well against sweden.  Hopefully he ups his game for Italy.

wow, that was something, i think it was a goal, we had a slowmotion replay in Full HD, stopped it when it happend and tracked forward and back ten times.
It was incredible! But thats was football is all about, emotions and discussions during the match and afterwards by the fans. I am against electronical things like RfID chips etc. I love the emotions and i like Roo's comment: sitting there, watching the match is much more harder than being a player

Good luck England vs Italy!

Spain vs France will be a clear victory for Spain in my eyes. The team France lost track yesterday

Spain 4-1 France is my predictions.

I was on vacation when this began I carried my IPAD around the casino for the Spain v Ireland game live radio on ESPN. :rock My grandmother v grandfather respectively.  :aok

Then I found a bar that had the game projecting on 3 giant screens.   :x Also since France couldn't defend against Sweden how in the world are they gonna keep out Xavi, Silva, Torres etc? Also I didn't see a single french player show speed like Torres or Navas are capable of.   :bolt:

I foresee a Germany v Spain final like the 2008 cup.  Although Portugal could upset Germany. As long as they can keep decent % of possession. :old:

Edit: I have seen every game so far and I do believe Spain will come away with a third cup in a row. Although they completely screwed the Confederations cup up.

Anyway it will be an interesting game since David Villa is no longer carrying them.  :cry

when greece equalised,  I thought they could have done the impossible but then their defence got cut to pieces.   Good game!

Always the chance for Spain to have a bad game and the french are nowhere near as bad as the Greeks but you would have to put spain as favourites for tonight.

really great matches underway tonight!
ENGLAND vs. ITALY the winner is the next challenger for Germany,
i think England would fit better the German gameplay.
They played 32 times against each other, Germany won 11 times
and lost 15 times and 6 games ended draw so far.
Italy on the other hand is unpredictable, so i hope England wins!

It needs to be, England don't have the players not by a long shot, but they can win it by good tactics and defense. If they tried to play pretty football they would get torn a part. Its not always the best players that win a game. They look very strong mentally almost like dare I say it Italy  :lol

Italy were easily the better team,   pirlos penalty was immense if only joe stayed on his feet it would have gone from one of the best penalties ever to the worst.   :(

Moving on we need to change things like germany and spain have done and have confident assured players in every position that can look up and spot a pass.  And  Not rely on one or two players performing.

I understood this "we" exactly the same way he did mean it: WE, as the spectators, will now move on to see the half finals. I didn't think a second he was talkign about the Swedish team. It actually took a moment for me to grasp what you are talking about  :lol

Ugh! What a heart-wrencher!!

Ronaldo made the mistake of waiting though. Ive always thought that if your the best/captain/most looked up to/most likely to score you shoot either 1st or 3rd definately not 5th.

Yep this would be my bet. Although Spain are like a snake without fangs, they need a dedicated forward such as David Villa or Torres to turn the opportunities into goals. That was the creed Luis Aragones taught the team from under 14- 2008 Euro cup.

He wanted the glory of getting the winning goal. Served him right for all his Emmy performances. I give him 3 out of 10 for each of his dives.

Todays match was best game of the quarter/semi finals so far imo. Spain favored to win? but for someone like me who really doesn't care. Let's just hope whoever wins, they don't drop the trophy under the bus again? :D

Well that was a bit of an upset. Johim Loch really shouldn't of screwed with his lineup. They would of been better off.

Now the first game for spain/italy will be the final as well. Lets just hope Del bosque puts in Llorrente or Torres.

 :cry :cry :cry

At least I'm going to the California Classico on Saturday. Completely sold out at Stanford's Stadium 50,000+. Around 700+ tickets were donated to service members and their families. Germany is out, I want to see Landycakes and Beckham cry.  :devil

(If Landycakes would come back to the Quakes, that would be just fine, but until then I hate him until the second that US jersey is on)

Seems like Germany expected to win and didn't look at the Italians tactics of Pirlo orchestrating and balls over the top for Balotelli.      They should be happy it wasn't more like 4-0!!

The Italian back five were immense credit were credit is due.

Now for a great final and I fancy the Italians now unless he starts with torres.

we have a huge discussion in germany why Joachim Lows didn't trust the lineup vs Greece
He changed it completly in the wrong direction, there was no harmonic teamplay, no good and surprising moves. At all the matches before, germany played their game, now he tried to stopp pirlo with a more middle oriented player Kroos, a typical 6 normaly. Thats the big point, why he changed a winning team?!?! nobody knows, its a mess, pretty frustrated for us.

The result: The better team won! Italy will now play very clever, with the same tactices of early pressure they can bring also spain into trouble

Well Pirlo is still playing he is 33 only 3 years older then David Villa and 5 years older then Torres Most of the team is between 28 and 35 so it is very possible. If the world still exists in 2 years time I am cheering for them. (Dec 21st 2012 ;) )
