Granted, its only 56 in the end, but one would be amazed with ~20 fires a NIGHT, forget the day time, how much 56 can do. For anyone who knows anything or has any expierence in the fire service they know how stressful and tiring one fire can be....

not sure, but I can look into it. I dont live in the Detroit Area, but with Google anything is possible. If I had to guess though, not many.

most firefighters I know dont make close to 60k. they go way above that. our city has a lot of firefighters but very few fires. most calls are for paramedics in which case a firetruck also comes along. it would cost a lot less if only the paramedic truck would show up. been proposed many times but the union always goes against it.
there's articles about firefighters making well over 100k a year with some doing over 200k due to overtime.

firefighters arent getting laid off for lack of money. I believe there's a lot of waste.

The firefighter population is declining proportionate with the population of the residents.
Actually......it's a bit less.
That said, the mass exodus of people from detroit actually causes more need for firefighters.

take a wander down Fort street, south of the ambassador bridge.......
2 miles of that road could burn and it would be an improvement

I wish I'd gone on the firefighter job. Great hours, time off to work a trade job, naps at work, job security, same pay and bennies as the cop job, better Bosses, people get along better cause you have to since you have to live with each other. No negative press daily in the media. The citizens dont hate you cause your not giving them tickets or arresting them.
All this assuming there are no fires. And of course here in Chicago the trucks are always rolling cause the bambulances are always tied up with people shot, we might get 50 people shot on a weekend at night, along with all the other ailments from heart attacks to car accidents. Detroit is probably worse.
And of course theres the fires. If youv never been in one I wouldnt know how to explain it other then its the scariest thing Ive ever been around. Ive caught smoke inhalation twice trying to get to people trapped, once I was able to and once not. Fires are the one thing that scares the living hell out of me and I aint shamed to say it. Imagine what its like in Detroit where 1/2 of the population is probably running electric heaters to stay warm in winter, or candles. Both recipes for disaster.
And while 57g a year might be a lot in some parts of the country its nothing in the big cities where it might cost $350,000 to buy a house in a neighborhood where your kid is unlikely to get shot in the park playing ball. Thats mail carrier salary cops and firemen make. Think about it?
But Ive often thought how strange it is that citizens think we make to much, while risking our lives for people who think we make to much, and they have nothing to say about the clowns who misuse their tax dollars, and are always grabbing more, while taking care of their buddies who in turn are taking care of them. They are the Svengalis in all this. We, all of us, are just the serfs. I bet "they" arent getting laid off.

Detroit is in such a deep hole it is unreal. There is no hope in Detroit what so ever.

Detroit is probably worse.
Detroit makes Chi-town look like Fiji. If you've never been there, I strongly suggest you keep it that way!
-
They're not getting paid enough.
not even close to this in fact.... Listen to the media (I know, how reliable), who gets budget cuts first? EMT's, Firefighters and Teachers. It has nothing to do with the firefighters not getting paid enough, if I made what a paid firefighter makes I would be living with golden walls in my area.....

Doing the fire academy when it comes round next time (rumor has its fall this year :rock), take my civil service test apply to the nearest paid department, if I dont get a job there I'll keep up with my credentials and wait until my neighboring town goes paid (rumor has it ~5 or 10 years...). Work an ambulance service in the mean time, got a pretty good plan if it works.
take a wander down Fort street, south of the ambassador bridge.......

This is not the point, even if it is "better" for something to burn, it would not be the civilians looking bad, it would be those who are supposed to be putting it out. Keep cutting the fire fighters, find out what happens. If your fire department pulled up lawn chairs and watched your house or place of work burn, how would you feel? Same thing with this scenario you give...

truest words to be said yet in this thread.
-
Firefighters are brave men, and a class above the average person.
I don't think laying them off is morally viable.

it is not only a moral thing, it is a safety measure for civilians.

it is a job. any firefighter can quit anytime they want and just like everywhere else, there's hundreds looking for that position. why is it that nobody is up and screaming because those in uniform are really underpaid. I would love to see communities tax themselves to support the soldiers at the nearest base.

issue is: many paid departments want residency of a set amount of time in that city, as well as other requirements. Many people can not afford to relocate their belongings and family to a new town/city with an income of 15 or 20 an hour and 2 mouths to feed. Don't get me wrong, I love that the fire service is picky about who hires, dont want a stranger to the town/city not knowing where they're going when your house is burning down, correct?
As for the rest of your post, I agree, the only thing I can think of to answer is this: They do not see the soldiers in action daily much they see or read in the newspaper about fire fighters.

so you think 57k a year is good pay to run INTO the burning buildings? or to go out on a 0 degree day, and cut someone out of their wrecked car?
those guys are probably the most underpaid profession.

I would eat out the Queen Mum for 57K a year.
Yup, they are overpaid.

I do not know, CAP. I was not posting something to make a statement that they are over paid or under paid.

but see that is the job the sign up for. I work in a steel mill. I make around 50k a year. do you think it's enough to go out in 100 degree and cut slabs for hours which makes temp around you feel like you are in hell? how about standing a few feet away while guiding a guy up in a crane to stack up a slab that weights about 20 to 25 tons knowing that if he messes up and you arent fast enough, you wont have to worry about a burial as there wont be much left to scrape off the slab and whatever cant be removed will be cremated when it goes into the furnace so rest of you can have pretty shinny steel for whatever you use?
there's a lot of people who work in a job which is dangerous. but that's what we get paid for. I am not saying I am a hero or deserve special treatment. but go look at the doctors/nurses in the er. day in and day out treat people who are sick or dying. but you still dont go out and single them out for special treatment? because that's their job. which is what firefighters/police officers and such do. that is their job and they're very well paid with exceptional benefits. so dont say it's not enough. I dont know of any firefighter or police officer who makes the minimum for that job. I have known many and they always say the same thing, pay is good and hours are great.
the only one's who dont get paid enough are the volunteer firefighters. they work for nothing, now them I do think highly of them. not that I think anyless of the others.

Yup, they are overpaid.
And who could argue with that? All they do is sit around and eat ice cream in recliners, sleep, and have the occasional ping pong tournament.

Exactly. These guys are practically millionares after a few years on the job and never have to worry about bills or the mortgage.

I think the point is that he feels that the emergency responders did not recognize the symptoms of a stroke which seems a little incompetent. The other point is that for some reason they had a prejudice against the man that made them think he was drunk, this seems unprofessional. In case anybody doesn't know, if you have symptoms of a stroke you need to go to the ER immediately, it is good to know ahead of time which hospital has a stroke center as there are drugs that can only be used within a short time of the stroke. I can only imagine how awful it would be to know that something is seriously wrong but to be dismissed by the professionals. I think we have all had the experience of knowing more than an expert at sometime but being dismissed. Imagine that it is a health emergency.
I'm sorry you had to go through that.

If that's the case then it's unacceptable but it's not an indictment on an entire profession.

Idk where the hell you guys live at but the fire fighters here (I was a volunteer here for a while before joining the good ol' USMC) make 30 - 32K a year and the chief makes about 120K...........

Thank you for putting into words the thoughts that I couldn't.
I hope you held them accountable for their actions. There is no excuse for not providing the best care possible. There are some on this job that have no business what so ever stepping foot on a truck. They usually promote to the top quickly.

I know that when I looked them in their eyes and told them the outcome, they had to live with that.
I was young, and we aren't the litigious type.

Thank you Slash.
I'm not very eloquent, thankfully pembquist could read through my gibberish.
I shouldn't blanket a whole profession as jerks, and others shouldn't blanket a whole profession as heroes is all I'm saying.

They should have recognized what was happening and that the stroke coming on could have resulted from the collision that smashed the table.
