Title: Boats
Post by: Rash on September 15, 2012, 07:18:06 PM
I've had it ten years, and owned it the past 5.  5 tons and holds 200 gallons of gas.  She is 24 years old, but sings like an angle.

That's a damned nice toy ya got there Rash. But it'd take a small fortune to to fill it up with fuel  :lol

I want to share with you guys a boat that I'm proud of even though she's not mine. The F.D. Crockett named after my grandpa on my dads side, was build in 1924 by Alex Gaines and my grandpa on my grandmas side, John Smith in Seaford Va. The F.D.Crockett is 1 of only 2 log "buyboats" to be built on the Chesapeake Bay still in existence. She was used as a oyster and crab boat back in the day. I have a great uncle that quit school to go to work aboard her.
The boat was restored last year and now gives pleasure cruises and resides at the Deltaville Maritime Museum in Deltaville Va. She even has her own Facebook page!

She is 24 years old, but sings like an angle.

Trying to visualize that.  Acute or Obtuse?

Obtuse Angle singing:  AHAHHHHHHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHH
Acute angle singing:  UUUUUHHHOOOOHHHHHHHOHHHHHHOOO OOOHHHHHUUUUUUUUU

Like that?

Last year I bought into a boat with two other people.  It was May 24th.  I sold my interest on September 28th (or thereabouts) of the same year...for what I paid for it.

It was too much boat for me and the sharing concept, while sounding good to begin with, didn't work out.

We went out on a Cat style pleasure boat my sister and her husband bought and all of us got the "bug" again.  I may buy something small for next year by myself.

Have rod, will travel!

Boats are lots of fun but nearly as expensive as planes to operate.  But hey, you only live once.

Owned for the past 5 months.

Chrysler Mutineer.  15' OAL, 22'-8" mast, 100 sq. ft. main, 50 sq. ft. jib, 160 sq. ft spinnaker (when I get one), 400 pounds, 33 years old and doesn't use a drop of gas  :D

Gave her a face-lift when I got her.  (Nose-art on additional pics is a mock-up for now until this boating season is over)

A friend of mine has a 20' or so boat with 2 engines and we worked out that the boat was about $70 an hour more expensive than the airplane. (Essentially twice as much)

I got a couple of boats, first is a 34ft Searay Express cruiser, it has a pair of 454 engines, with 500 hours each - great for cruising up and down Florida without any hitches, its great for touring.

My pride and joy is a 2000 Luhr's Convertible, with twin Cat Diesels - quite nice to sprint out 30 miles to the gulf current and do a day of fishing - its for sale right now (actually both boats are) - hoping to sell one or other (first boat was my fathers and the luhrs is mine)
Sorry for the crappy image, its actually a dealers photo, he hasn't listed all my photos yet.

I honestly don't want to sell the Luhr's, problem is I have it tied up in a channel by Fort Lauderdale, and I am over 4 hours away. Only good thing is I am renting a dock for only $150 a month, which beats my EC which sits in dead storage right now and I am paying $350.

EC is for sale, have it for 20k even, which is fairly good deal - except nobody has money to buy boats and secondly I have only 5 offers in a year now. Luhrs however everyone wants a tourny boat, except they won't pay me what I want.

As they say Boats are money pits. Searay is named Moonraker and the Luhrs I named "Das Boat"

Man I hope you get the boat, its certainly been the best thing I ever bought, in terms of "toys". I was fortunate mine was from a pissed off ex wife whose husband she divorced and she won the boat, didn't care for it and all she wanted was cash.

If I had 100k right now I would not upgrade to any other boat, I sleep comfortable on it, and it drives just fine.... and the Mahi-mahi simply hate my guts  :D

I'm in the process of selling Cirrus:  36' Omega sloop, fast and a blast to sail.

And just today we closed on Elnora: 37' Pacific Seacraft "Crealock" cutter.  Not as fast but capable of taking me anywhere in the world I choose to go.

And for you guys that dwell on the money....you're missing the point.  Having the boat allows me to go places that others pay big bucks to get to, I get to go as often as I want and stay as long as I want.  Are airplanes and boats expensive....sure.  Worth it....you bet your butt!!

Now you're talking!  Beautiful boats!  :x

My parents and friends kept asking me why I wanted a sailboat.  They just didn't understand, especially since our family has always owned power boats.  I finally made my point when my dad went to get gas to the tune of $350-$400 for 10 hours of engine time while I sat there and laughed.  :devil

My dad also broke my balls about it not being as thrilling until, one day, I took him out in a 15-20 kt. blow.  I had him hiking out so far that his arse was almost in the water  :D

Because of the economy I am trying to dump it, I am even selling it with the electronics just to sweeten the deal. Right now is time to buy any boats if you have the money, I found my same luhr's for 20k cheaper in port canaveral.

I have an 18ft Bass Tracker with a 40hp engine.  :lol It doesn't take much to really run it, and it doesn't go FAST, it cruises. BUT, when the lakes are low (Which happens a LOT in Central Texas), we can take our boats farther up the lake. Especially Lake Georgetown, I've caught some nice fish in the shallower parts of the San Gabriel river.

I'd go take a picture, but there really isn't much to show off.  :lol

Hey man, that sounds like my kind of boat. Cheap, easy to get in and out and you can get to places that the big boys only dream about. Not to mention you can fill her up with gas, buy some beer and bait and fish all day for 30 or 40 bucks.  :rock

Here's a boat for ya. This little dandy is called the "Jett Stream". It's owned by Hank Williams Sr. daughter, Jett Williams.

My family in Va. own a marine railway (same place that built the other boat I posted), and they build and repair boats. They've been in business since before the civil war. Anyway Jett Williams brought her boat in for some work several years ago and we was lucky enough to get a picture.

Man that is a fine looking boat right there, although I'd really hate having to deal with that much wood. I've been interested in house boats for some time (unless I win 100k i'd never get one) but few i seen had alot of work needed on wood areas.

I love carpentry, I actually thought if I did win some cash i'd certainly like a boat I can fix up (internally not mechanically wise).

I used to be a yacht mechanic at Hatteras of Lauderdale's custom yard.

Every couple of years, we would customize a new yacht which was named "big bad john".

In 1990, they didn't get a new yacht but rather had it refitted and customized further.

The luxury tax put a hurting on yacht yards.

now that is lovely, and cutter rigged with a spinnaker pole - versatile too :aok

planning a RTW trip?

The wife says we're going to "80 degrees".  She's talking temperature, not latitude.  Idea is south to Mexico then a right turn to the South Pacific.

The SeaRay is at Port Canaveral, near cocoa beach if thats the boat you want to look at its in dead storage right now. The Luhr's is in fort lauderdale.

DOH, won't be able to drive that far.

Post up the sales link though as someone else suggested.  I'd be interested to see the inside etc,.

I think I was 13 or 14 when my parents sold their 22' Catalina, now that little fast sucker was a blast to sail/race.

Hey man, that sounds like my kind of boat. Cheap, easy to get in and out and you can get to places that the big boys only dream about. Not to mention you can fill her up with gas, buy some beer and bait and fish all day for 30 or 40 bucks.  :rock

QFT right there. It's been through a LOT in the past 10 or so years that we've had it and it still runs great. :rock

I got a slight problem, just talked to my dad about it - and seems the company that was selling the boat decided to sell only Yachts - that or fact I refuse to let my boat get stored by them (Long story short but never let someone take care of your boat when trying to sell it, they wash and clean it and when the boat sells they tack on a very profitable fee for it)...

I'm going have to drive up to cape sometime and get someone else to list and sell it, its been on the market for a year at 20k, well below the market cost for the same year/model..
I'll post in the next few days and see what I can find out in coming days and ill post on here.

Trying to visualize that.  Acute or Obtuse?

Obtuse Angle singing:  AHAHHHHHHAHAHAHHHHHHHHHH
Acute angle singing:  UUUUUHHHOOOOHHHHHHHOHHHHHHOOO OOOHHHHHUUUUUUUUU

Like that?

More like roar.  Feels like the boat lifts off of the water.

v10 1000 horse apiece, nice boat. Wheres the outriggers for fishing? Should have some on the starboard and port side, top, and stern.

Low rpm 2 stoke engine from what I read so they must not be as noisy like a screaming detroit.

WOW Scotch...Dare II is a beautiful boat....older, whats her history?

Oh, and the 2nd one is a Ship  :lol

Was built in 1944 as a dragger on the Oregon coast. Built by George Calkins who is a pretty famous wood boat builder. The way it was setup, everything was for function. It was just laid out very nicely. Huge engine room with lots of head space. Great lines. All old growth cedar. It did roll like a bichhhh though! lol Fished all up and down the west coast in lots of different fisheries until the love muffin I sold it to wrecked it on a beach in Washington.

The second one is the Ocean Rover. Drags for pollock out of Dutch Harbor. lol

Jussstttttt sit right back and you'll hear a tallleee....a tale of a fiathful trip.....

Saw this quote and just had to do some research (Im just nerdy like that  :lol)

The SS Minnow used on Gilligans Island was a  1964 "Wheeler" measuring 38'6" in a straight line from nose to tail. It's certified as a 40' boat because in America the measurement is taken from the outline of the deck. It houses two Detroit Deisel engines @ 230 hp each. Maximum speed is 14 knots, with a cruising speed of 12 knots.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.  :aok
