Title: Traded away my C5 :)
Post by: Grayeagle on October 29, 2012, 05:32:41 PM
Had a long talk with my financial advisor after doing some research on Pro's and Con's of stayin with our C5.
Thing is ..the C5 is developing a bad habit of needing maintenance ..in fact it is out stripping my ability to keep up with it.

So .. looked around at what's out there and what would scratch my itch.
.. Camaro just does not grab me and Ford Mustang looks cool but the Boss 302 costs the same as a new Vette .. sheesh!
(not to mention I will never own another Ford ..just too screwed up to contemplate)

I had never even sat in a Challenger but they do look cool..
..so I did some research over the last couple weeks looking at what they offer.
Today wife and I went down and test drove one.

Hmm.
I do not have to fold myself up to get into it.
I can wear my helmet and actually move my head around in it.
I do not feel like I am putting on a Jacket :)
It's a big car ..surprised how much it reminded me of our old Road Runner.
I can actually adjust the seat too far back to be comfortable driving it.
It even goes fairly well (R/T ..cannot do the SRT392 ..yet)

..so we chatted with the sales dood at Bill Luke Dodge and they scrounged up one that wasn't SILVER or WHITE
.. I just about wanna puke when I see these colors ..every car in Phoenix AZ is one of the above it seems.
..and I passed on the nice black R/T Classic they had.
Already done the black car thing and if I have a choice I will never do black again.
Don't get me wrong ..black *rocks* ..for about 30 seconds after you shine it up.

So.. they found me a RED one.
With Chrome wheels even!
Ooo-SHINEY!!
Nomnoms :)

We be pickin it up tomorrow they say .. since they had to go get it.
10yr/75k warranty an all.

I really am such a car nut.

nice dude. they look good in black....much better than i'd expected when i first saw one. most of the ones in my area are either white or red. i've not seen any in any of the more appropriate colors of the past as yet.

 what mods you got planned?

Well .. since I won't be involved in maintenance gigs for the next 10 years or 75k miles ..mayhap I will be able to bolt on a procharger an make it a tad louder :)

Loud part will prolly happen sooner than procharger :)

hehehehe.. i don't think that making it loud can or will hurt warranty. one of the black ones around here has something other than stock exhaust, manual tranny, and sounds dam good.

Why not a low mile used G8 GXP?  Test drove any G8s?  Easy/cheap mods completely transform the smushy transmission in the auto G8 GT, but the GXP has a decent manual and an LS3 motor just begging for mods.

4 doors, 400+ hp, for cheap...

Challengers are a nice ride. They don't corner as well as they should, but they go straight very well. My personal favorite is the blue.

i haven't been under a new challenger yet. if they set it up like mustangs, you will be able to unbolt the mufflers in back of the rear axle. mine took me less than an hour to replace. i installed gt500 mufflers, as i don't want it as loud as most aftermarket mufflers.....but it's loud enough to make its presence known when i throttle it.
i did my buddy's 2010 camaro. he put thrush on his. they almost looked like nothing more than resonators. the camaro doesn't come from the factory with them clamped like the mustang. but the kit he had came with destructions showing where to cut the pipes, then you slide the new mufflers over(still only doing in back of the rear axle), align them, then clamp them. his is as loud as my 89 gt was. that's what he wanted, and his wife gave him the ok. i can't imagine not being able to do the same on the dodge.

ok.....i'll rephrase myself. they're slow, relatively speaking. they're beautiful cars, and i wouldn't mind having one..........but compared to their competition........... :devil :neener:

on the other hand, the 70'ish cuda ragtop we pushed into the parking lot a week ago.....THAT was fast....once he got gas in it. he ran out right in front of the shop.

Cats are fine and do a very good job of removing certain unwanted frequencies.

I'll bet glasspacks might sound pretty good behind the stock cats.

Of course, two turbos do a good job at muffling.

On new Challengers bein slow:

Umm .. I remember runnin a mid 16 second quarter in my 4-gear 383 69 Road RUnner ..with headers.
It 'felt' fast and was loud (uncapped an all) .. and ..useda embarass the crap out of a lot of old school muscle cars even so..
..especially Mustangs.

New R/T hemi Challenger will run low 13's (like 13.0's.. some have posted high 12's with very minor bolt ons) ..costs more than 10k less than a Boss 302 Mustang
.. hmm .. for that extra 10k I would imagine boltin on a Procharger, converter change, mebbe a better gear out back
could get me to the point where I would have to polish my tail lights because that's all most Mustangs would see.

Granted .. you could do the same bolt ons for a Boss 302 ..and be up over 50k into it
.. for that coin I could do a gen 3 426 Hemi, procharged ..and be well into the 600hp range and still be faster.

don't compare it to the boss. compare it to the gt. the gt for 26k(cheap version) or about 34k(premium) will run mid 12's all day long. bolt on a power adder, and you're in the 10's. for less than 40k.
if ya wanna use the boss, there's already been supercharged ones dyno'd over 800hp, with nothing more than a supercharger. and i think a tune to go with it, but that's to be expected. i think camaros are getting similar numbers to the gt.

stock for stock, comparing apples to apples, you ain't going faster than the mustang right now.

that said, i still like the challengers a LOT. they look good, and sound good. if i could afford one without giving up my gt, i would strongly consider getting one. perhaps in the color of the one posted in silverz06's post......THAT looks badarse.

the big block will do over 170 mph.......the V6 will do 155....sorry cap, but that is anything but slow.....

it does not matter if it is the "fastest" (although the Challenger has a better top end then the mustang in the same class) it has more style and class than all the retro's put together....it is the King of modern muscle just like the Cuda's and Challengers of yesteryear.

when I took the new one out the dealer says to me...."ya they are great at going straight...they were made for drag racing"
a big idiot who does not know anything about the Challengers.....

the first Challengers came out in 1970 they were called the T/A Challengers that stands for Trans Am racing...a road racing circuit....same with the Cuda's......... AAR Cuda....All American Racing.........they were not made for the 1/4 mile they were designed for road racing..back then if a company wanted to put a car on the track they also had to put it on the street(cant remember what it was called)........my Challenger with its disk brakes in front and drums in the back.....weighed 3650 lbs and handled awesome on the back roads nothing ever beat me on the back roads...nothing even came close....these new ones with huge dick brakes front and back are even better....they handle awesomely for a car that is over 4000 lbs.

edit

Silver that panther pink Challenger is sweet, I would own one in that color :aok

it was called homologation. and it should be still in the rules.

sounds like your salesman wasn't very up on his stuff. when i test drove the mustang i didn't end up buying, i flogged that car. hard. the guy was telling me about mustangs, and how poorly they handled in the past while i was doing it. so i took it on a back twistie road i'm familiar with, and know what i was able to squeeze out of my old fox body mustang. and i proceeded to flog that car more. it was like a slot car. worlds better than my fox body....but i already knew that. he got quiet for a moment, but never reached for a "jesus handle" or did the passenger foot braking thing.

if i'm not mistaken(and i could well be) the gt is limited to 155mph. suspect the six banger is limited the same.

now, after all of that wall o text.......i suspect you think i'm dissing the challenger. i am not. or at least not intending to. i like the thing, and as previously said, i wouldn't hesitate to own one......if i could afford it without giving up my gt. i also think ge's gonna be happy with his,,,,,,won't be as fast as his vette was, but i'll be willing to bet he'll be wondering why he didn't do this sooner.

now stop taking me so darn seriously!! or do i have to use excessive smiley thingies?  :aok

Cap the C5 Vette I had on its best day would run mid 13's in stock trim.
Challenger is 13.0's ..it's actually a bit faster.
Helps that it's 15 years newer :)

I'll try an do some video's at Speedworld when I make it out there.
I heard the local Challenger club goes out there just to embarass the Mustang crowd :)

(and hey .. ya think a huge old school Hemi would be fun in a new Challenger? -grin-)

Well .. since I won't be involved in maintenance gigs for the next 10 years or 75k miles ..mayhap I will be able to bolt on a procharger an make it a tad louder :)

Loud part will prolly happen sooner than procharger :)

-Frank

Procharger and accompanying tune will void the drive train warranty.

hehehehe.........those shuold look good going through turns. if you look on youtube, i think it was int he 2010 season, or 2011 season, there was a challenger in a couple of the contintal tire challenge races. a lone challenger in a sea of mustangs/camaros, and bmw's. and the dam thing looked sexy in there.

almost forgot....i thought those vettes were faster than 13's.........

On 'voiding the warranty'
.. if I could afford it I would bolt in a huge old school Hemi tomorrow,
back half the car and swing a Dana 60 back there,
and have an 8-71 blower singin up front.

Photoshop fun:

As it is it will be several years before I can manage to do what I plan.

I did notice one of the salesman at Bill Luke has no mufflers on his Challenger ..was told by the guy I was chattin with that he had removed them entirely and just ran a straight pipe where they useda be.. it was LOUD up in them buildings and sounded *awesome* exiting onto Camelback.

He still had the cats ..but that was all I was told.

that thing'll drop into the 6's. there's already been 5.4's in the 8's, and i think the 5 liter cobrajets are in the low 9s now.........you should look a bit more....i think srt is using the vipers v-10 in its racing version of the challenger.

i don't consider any mustang in the league of the vette. not even the shelby. unless ford makes the gt40 again, there's nothing built in the usa that is in its league.

and from 95(or was it 94?) the mustang was of the worst ford ever built, although there's a couple exceptions in that year range. 305hp dohc v8 making same power as v6, lolol

Simple pedestrian stuff like headers and a supercharger with low boost.

I want to do some 180 degree headers since there is no transmission but rather a narrow torque tube which would make it possible to do.

When you speak of so many years apart it definitely makes a difference.

When you speak of so many years apart it definitely makes a difference.

YEA, it does, and the new mustangs and camaros are close in performance to those older vettes. but the fact remains.....nothing built in this country is in the vettes league. some will argue that the viper is, but that isn't either. the vette is a street car. the viper is a race car in street car clothes, making it not comparable.

new vette to new anything? there's nothing. not from this country anyway.....and the cars from europe that compare to it are stupid expensive.

Well .. Bill Luke Dodge finally got our Challenger R/T in.
We picked it up last nite finishing up about closing time.
Haven't slept very well in two days, drove Kathy a bit crazy,
..yanno I haven't been this excited about gettin a new car *ever*

Kodak moment:
Kathy sees the car for the first time, she actually looked a bit stunned
after finding out that yes ..that is ours.
'Why ..that is beautiful, I had no idea it would look like that'

Will post pix later today, ..
..it's a RED HEMI Challenger R/T and the only thing I do not care for ..
..it's TOO DAMN QUIET!!

HEMI's gotta SING man!
..and ya, a muffler shop can cut out the resonators replacing them with a straight pipe and restore the HEMI sound for ~50 bucks

It's *nice* to be out from under the 'Corvette' tax!

In case you haven't seen it, check out the US West Coast Muscle Car Special of Top Gear. They bought a stock Challenger off the showroom after Chrysler reneged on providing one. Hammond drove it from San Francisco to Bonneville and ran over 140mph in a measured mile on the salt with a taped up front end. Impressive.
