How does a apple cart flip a tank? Why does a bush stop a tank dead in it's tracks?
you can have the ground game. i'll be flying :airplane:
-
It's a good distraction and a needed rest after twisting, pushing, and pulling within furry balls. :D
Objects are made hard I guess to capture them low flying buzzards.
I'm guessing it was a perk tank or you wouldn't be upset.
It's a known fact tigers like hiding in trees.

maybe you could word your opinion a bit better. :aok While I agree that there are some goofy things going on in the terrain, etc, I understand the limitations of the coading.
My question is can HTC, at least for future maps, reduce the "hard" signature of an object and still allow it to provide visual concealment? For instance, the hedgerows are currently one of those things that if you run in to with your tank you are stopped, spun around, or flipped. Is there a way to reduce the hedgerows down so that when (most) gv's hit them they go over top instead of stopping AND still have the visual effect of the hedgerow there?

Don't have the patience to drive for 5 minutes and then get bombed or killed by a tank hiding somewhere. I like fast and gritty action, GVing just isn't for me. Though I'm sure some one will come here and just tell me that I suck at GVing and its probably true. :D

I have to be the worst GVer in the game. I drive a panther for 15 minutes to get to the top of a hill. Then decide I'm too far away to hit a damned thing, so I take off back down the hill...hit a bump and roll end over end about 10 or 15 times until I come to a stop at the bottom of the hill. Luckily I land right side up. So I proceed to get closer to enemy vbase only to be spotted by a Storch. So I duck in behind a barn, but then decide to back out to shoot the Storch with my little machine gun, only to run into a apple cart that flips me over upside down :bhead. Storch then proceeds to drop orange smoke all around my position :uhoh
I end sortie, lose 6 perk points and give storch boi a free kill. :(

Yeah, the GV objects are a bit out of whack. Then again, I don't GV nearly as
much since the GV changes. Still like and miss the :old: way, ability to change gears
when needed.
Even back then, we had toughest bushes and trees.
Would be realistic to plow through hedges, not be spun or flipped upside down.

Lets not forget the panzerfaust equipped sheep of doom. Id settle for the tank to just come to a stop instead of bouncing around. Doesn't even need to drive over.
-
I used to feel the same way about GV's but I'm starting to like them as a much needed change of pace every once in a while. If you like action keep an eye out for the craterma map. It's a new map and has an incredible tank town with spawns coming in from everywhere. It's the most fun I've ever had in a GV and it's non stop action. Can't wait for that map to come around again.
-
I'd say the players are lame, more than the game being lame.
Also, the only time you should get close in a Panther is if you're in company with 5-10 other tanks, and are knocking in the enemy's flank.

It's a Panther. Drive it right up their bums. Heavily armored with a big gun and a mild perk. Get real close and personal I say. :aok Long range plinking is for sissies or lame as you say. :D

I spent some time with a great trainer, WWhiskey. While I'm still no "super pro" when it comes to tanking, I'm much better. It's funny how a little training can change your whole perspective on something.
I wish some of those "hordlings" would spend more time with the trainers :devil
-
Oh sure waystin, that works fine if you don't care about efficiency. The panther is best used as a support tank, or spearhead of a larger group. Use them as anchor points for your line; put them where the enemy can't ignore them, and use the lighter tanks to screen their flanks and take add to the Panther's fire.
Or stick them at the head of your column, and again use the lighter tanks as screening forces.
Takes coordination and numbers usually only found in squads, but mighty hard to beat when used like that.

You know what man, that's a great idea. I've never even thought about there being a trainer for GVs. I have no idea about sighting or anything. I just seen over in the training forums that WWhiskey is taking on folks for training too. I think I'll look into that. Tnx Fugi! :salute

You can drive through some bushes, but the ones that are meant to represent hedgerows should, and do, stop a tank. They probably should be a bit wider and taller to be to look scale. The flipping aspect is probably an unfortunate byproduct of the ground handling code. It has to handle driving up on the slopes of berms and it apparently gets a bit wonky when it has to deal with a 90 degree angle (like a hedgerow or barn). Also, the small stone farm house and associated ox-cart are a bit wonky in their hit detection- best stay away from them as the hit extends a bit beyond their visible shape. This also means if you are hiding behind them and have what appears to be a clear shot, the building may still block your round.

There are more than a couple buggy aspects, but I still have a great time with it, esp when the bases are arranged such that 2 v-bases can can fight it out at an intermediate spawn, which prevents one side of the battle consisting of Tiger2's sitting on concrete

This is ridiculous criticism of the Tiger II's essential role; Guardian of the Map Room. A Tiger II is like the fat kid you put in the goal, because he is so big it's hard to score past him. The Tiger II is an anchor that is hard for any GV to get beyond. An M8 is all but useless against one, yet an M3 can drive circles around it literally faster than the turret moves. It is also great at giving mudhens the idea that they might actually score a hit on a perk tank, so they waste their bombs on concrete.
I can tell you first hand that it is also a fierce opponent in the field. I use it for HQ defense whenever a vehicle base spawns into our HQ, and I don't use it by sitting on concrete. I have had M4's at 20 feet try to turret me to no avail, while Panzers and Panthers shell my position from further out, and the Tiger II survived intact. I have been afield with one as our base flipped, and killed a dozen tanks and a half-dozen aircraft as I egressed.
No, the Tiger II does not just sit on concrete.
-
I simply have no ability to gv. I rarely see a target before he one shots me. When I do I never hit him. I cannot imagine how it is that I am incapable of seeing someone 3.5k away yet tthe enemy can HVAP my turret ring with one shot. Even when I took the King Tiger I was again 1shotted by an invisible assailant. :frown:

I can actually answer that :) Back when we got the updated panzer IV there was a bug that allowed you to drive through all the trees. I actually thought it was supposed to be that way!
-
I think the "push" that sends cv's spinning or rolling is necessary to keep you from hanging up on whatever you run into.
Of course, if you get "pushed" by one object into others nearby, you can really get to bouncing like a pinball.

Thank you.
That's one of two suggestions I would make (outside of changing the hardness of objects and letting shrubberies flip tanks)...
1) Make the spawn areas about 5x bigger, so campers can't play whack-a-mole so easily, and
2) give a 10 second delay from the time someone hits .ef in a GV til the vehicle towers to prevent dooshnozzles who like to sit on concrete in perk tanks from being 100% invinceable.
-

Chalenge's spirited justification of sitting on the concrete in a Tiger2 aside....nearly ALL gv sorties involve YOU spawning to THEIR base, or THEM spawning to YOUR base, because that's where nearly all spawns go. There's a few (intermediate spawns) on Trinity, and on the newer maps...but no one spawns perk tanks to certain death, giving a huge advantage to.....Tiger2's sitting on concrete.....having spawns meet in the middle of nowhere fixes that
-
Challenge, that notion is just downright ignorant. The Tiger II, while admittedly being the best line-anchor in the game, is far far more than that.
Move it FOREWARD, and its effectiveness increases unless airpower arrives.. Not only are you completely disregarding the potential for defense in depth, terrain, and choke points, but you're forgetting the psychological aspect of things too.
A Tiger II moving up makes most enemies pull back, and gives everyone else not in a Tiger II a boost in morale.

I was helping in the training arena for GV's for few years now, there just wasn't enough interest in GV's - mainly because of no trainers or lack of.
I used to post random Gatherings for GV training, but there was always very little turn out.

Agree, agree, and agree some more!
Spawn camping is for arcade players. Like hoarding it is lame. I cant figure out how people think it is fun. Call be odd but to me, at least while on the defensive, the most fun performing a blocking action while the enemy tanks roll towards your field and there you sit waiting for them to roll in. Being in a Panther and engaging targets at 2000 yards with success if a good time, and having that wee bit of panic realizing that something is flanking and you dont have a shot on it. Hopefully your countrymen can pick up the slack. :)

Yeah why did HTC make the GV changes to begin with. Seems to me they weren't broke so why fix them? :headscratch:
Two main reasons:
First, by removing the need to model the tank interior, the amount of work needed for new additions was reduced (=more output)
Second, the new control system made tanking much more accessible especially to new players. The WASD control is a universal convention for (almost?) decades now, and also think about how many gamers that stumble across Aces High do have a joystick at all?
Now they can at least jump into a GV and drive. In some way you can almost say the controls were 'broke' before.
And while I personally would have loved HTC moving inot the opposite direction (more interior modeling, more 'fidelity' and options) - these GV changes were a big success. GV usage went right up.
And that's why

Titanic if you had half a brain I might be concerned that your analysis was simply misguided, but instead I'm laughing at you for taking yourself serious at all. You are completely unable to broker any type of realistic analysis, and your opinion is nothing more than a whine that anyone might disagree with you.
Now hush and go take your meds.

ahh ty sir. I do seem to remember you saying in the past that GV usage went up substantially after the changes. I do have to admit that I don't even notice the different anymore.
-
I do wish the commanders view had some sort of targeting aid. Not a full range scale or anything, just a center dot amidst the circle would be adequate. For those last minute 'shit theres a panzer behind this hill right next to me moments'.
I know the pros don't need it or I could always put that in with a simple marker point on my monitor.

and YOU! Go sit on the concrete in your Tiger2 and defend those maprooms! I suppose the tank gets better mileage that way.....(which brings to mind, a modification......most tanks didn't traverse very fast with engine off?)

I don't care what anyone one says that new transmission messed up the GVs. I can't sneak forward take off fast or clime any sizable hills. It is not my fault a growing number of knot heads can't operate a standard transmission.
-
i really like the tank portion of this game! does it have some flaw's? yes. so what, its still fun. i find I'm better in a tank then in a plane. i die a lot in either one, but either way, i have a great time. that's all that matters to me. understandably some people have the time to pick things apart. well the game is not a 40 million dollar tank/plane/ship simulator so it comes with certain flaws that we have to deal with. some day HTC will make it better but for now it is what it is.
i know some of you don't feel that way, but i like and play it with all it flaws, i just wish they would bring the SHEEP BACK!!

Not true at all. My M18 Crew and I sit on top of hill...eating some cheese...drinking some wine....when down in the valley a Panther lumbers by. We mount up....start playing our musice really loud....then roll down the hill right up behind its arnold and blow it away. LOL. Then we drive up to the top of the hill and go back to our picinic spot. East some more cheese and drink some mor wine.... Waiting for the next tank to roll by. :devil

Sounds like he has about as much of a clue as you do in a tank, in that case.

my point is (apparently shared by others) is you GV the same way you fly.....absolutely without any sort of risk. Can't deny its effectiveness, but if everyone played as you do, I'd cancel my subscription out of sheer boredom

See Rule #4
-
The only planes that get shot with main guns are either deck buffs (who deserve it!), or tards strafing GV's from a near horizontal aspect, trying to pick up cheap kills, else IL2's, etc....BOTH of whom have the ability to shoot from a higher angle than said main gun can be brought to bear

Good system did you design it? It's like the crappy straits deal you design that too? The Cupola Commander is the best... extremely realistic. And the tanks shooting planes with there main GUN... another extremely realistic feature from the Cupola Commander  the 600 yrd Icon is also a joke.
The old system was better!
Who would you change the TC position?
Tank main guns downing aircraft- yeah, I agree it is a huge travesty in AH. But, thanks to the coading it is available. We all know in WWII a tank would run for cover or drive evasively if an enemy aircraft was diving on it, not traverse the turret and take a pot shot with the main gun. It is extremely gamey but it happens a lot in AH. Thing is though, how does HTC stop it?
What is wrong with the 600 yd icon? Are you speaking of an aircraft's ability to spot a gv while parked? If so, I say count you're blessings that you get an icon at all. Me? I'd like to see more like 300 yards when parked, and 1000 when moving (remember, a moving gv is going to kick up dust, show heavier exhaust, etc. Also, the human eye picks up movement much easier than stationary objects).
Oh, and I disagree. The new system is better! ;)

I would say the same for the GV and the icon it sees :aok why should the GV have an icon advantage?
The new system is easier not better
Edit: Instead of dummying the game down why not ad a halftime arena for folks like you that need it easier? Ala the capture the flag system.

That seems to be the case....I prolly lose more gv's to bombs than from other gv's---spawning to enemy bases just makes the likelihood of that even greater, which is why the maps which have gv's spawns matching up in the middle of nowhere are so much more fun.....you're not deFENDing the base, you're not trying to TAKE the base.....just mindless blasting away!

Spawn into my Base...I won't bomb ya.... and you'll have a chance to game the gamey GV with your main gun like at the arcade shoot-em up :rofl :rofl

It certainly was, you know like you could zoom in and check out the chipped paint on the panzer that was 5 miles away. And the way you could make your aim point with the cursor.
The only thing I miss was the standard transmission. NOT because it was "better". I can do everything I did with the old with the new, but only because it was fun. Running up through the gears was like playing in a race car. It would have been even more fun if they had added a "clutch" button. :x

You know... Like.... you had a driver a gunner and main gunner and the TC position ...shift gears.. I used to drive with my stick now I have to use buttons............. going backwards :aok
Yeah! It was better
Its like the kiddies arcade now :aok

hmm...I steer with my pedals, whilst aiming with my stick...and yes, a 'neutral' would be nice...if you hit 'shift s' in a Panther to stop....as soon as you use its fairly unique ability to spin in place, damn thing starts moving forward again....forcing you to shut off engine to forestall that...which causes OTHER dangers. But if you compare AH model to say..WOT, AH is better, imo
-
I have my WSAD keys mapped to a hat switch to drive,, works like a charm,,, I used the one on my throttle as well as shift s and w buttons,, so I don't ever used the keyboard to drive.

Everyone complains about the gears (and I liked the old way better too) but the part of the new GV model I hate the most is the "auto pilot" steering. You can't steer, you just give suggestions of direction and the under damped oscillator of an auto heading swings back and forth in the general direction you wanted. Heading at a tree? Turn left.. OK, I'm clear.. oops.. nope.. it's swinging back into the tree again.. splat. I've looked at videos of real tanks maneuvering, under no circumstances do they oscillate in the yaw axis after turning.
(You can map the steering to the twisty stick, which I've done, but it still oscillates and you have to be careful when aiming the gun to not accidentally twist the stick as the tank will take off running on it's own.)

I have to agree with the OP
If I had my way GVs would be removed from the game :old:
However I understand that it would be silly for HiTech to give up the subscription revenue from players that enjoy the GV game...
...and I suppose it's nice for those people incapable of flying a virtual plane to have something to do in the game
:headscratch:

GV's are gamey at best and put here for the planes to bomb and straff :aok
Yet last year only ~9% of all tank kills were made by planes. :old:

It certainly was, you know like you could zoom in and check out the chipped paint on the panzer that was 5 miles away.
It is still kind of quirky :headscratch: I mean you can see the vehicle supplies from way out zoomed in but still not see the GV until your on top of it.

They could of just addressed the sighting issues....only... and left the rest the way it was.
But who am I to gripe I didn't GV much before now even less.
I do however love my new AGV...Air to Ground Vehicle :rock
I don't care for your hiding icon less osti though :cry :P

Judging by your fighter and GV scores, I'm not at all surprised that you would stick to plinking stationary objects and it explains your aversion to actually engaging anything that can shoot back and defend itself with some degree of success. I will give you credit however for at least challenging yourself more than the testicularly challenged bomb*****.
By the way I couldn't help but notice that you never "brought it" the other night in TT.
You may resume your chest thumping.
:salute Nishizwa

Most of the time there not stationary :lol My score :rofl
I don't GV why would I come to TT LOL you were shooting your mouth off on Greebo's map with TT safely tucked away. I asked were you were so I could shoot your spawn camping butt :aok WITH MY PLANE.
Btw you also failed to rise to the challenge in planes Right?
Chest Thumped,
