In real life doesn't dissipate to nothing in a couple hundred feet. The plumes in real life reach the clouds if no wind, or stretch for miles if wind.
I wish smoke in Aces High was modeled to last longer than it does and especially reach much further broader areas. :aok
That is my wish. :)

How about we just model the game to have a frame-rate of just 2 then?

Same old "people have crappy PC" argument again.

no, it's same old "it doesn't add anything to the game" argument...and it's true.

Okay, add in telephone wires to prevent pesky Noe raids :neener:

Since your PC runs at max settings without any hitches when it comes to things like
smoke or fire in AHII, why don't you share your system details with us so we can all
get the same machine, v-card, etc.? :D
Here's mine:

Just like clouds, except darker and dirtier. :aok

no but a nice low smoke cloud would be nice :aok :aok

That CPU and graphics card are not really the best in any way, just letting you know.
Using windows "experience" index is also not really good for benchmarks.
Here is how you run aces high at 1080p screen res and all settings turned up.
CPU: i5 2500(k)
graphics card: HD 7870 or GTX 660.
RAM: 2gb or more.
Done and under 600$

we have very similar systems....
mine is AMD 2.9 GHZ also
except I have only 4 gigs of ram
and its a 32 bit system.....
I wonder what the differences are in how they run.....I want to upgrade to the 64 bit system, I need serious RAM
how long you been using the 64 bit? where you using 32 before? if so what is the difference?
is it just for gaming?
my rig is more for 3d modeling now and AH.....so I really could use as much ram as I can get......so 64 bit seems the way to go.

A GTX 660 vs my 650? I'm running 8 gig of RAM and a 2.9 gig processor. My settings are turned up.
I never claimed 'the best' but I'm doing fine when it comes to AHII.
So lets go back to 'nobody wants to buy a decent system so I can have my eye candy' whine.
Work on your priorities, smokey. :D

I'll put it this way. Back in 2008 and before, 20 fps was my best. I'd been known to play in the single digits.
Going below 60 is a rarity now.
Smoke and fire hit all systems hard in AH.

660 kills the 650. Way more stream processors. RAM is useless in aces high. 2 gig of RAM would work to be frank. gigahertz mean nothing when comparing a dual core athlon to a 4 core i5. lets look at a nice graphic.
the AMD athlon x2 255 was the closets i could find to the 245.

not trying to put your system down im just saying don't use it as a average baseline. Smoke would do nothing for a average system there Ringo. I understand people don't have loads of cache(hehe get the pun.....nm) nowadays but still atleast you are not playing on a laptop. People playing on 2009 laptops is what is holding us back.

I run a good FPS now in AH stays in the 55-60 range but I only have water and terrain on.....with Hi res textures....looks fine to me and is very playable...
I need the 64 bit system for modeling.....need as much RAM as possible....sux as it is now if model something with over a million verts my system crashes when I try to render out anything.........so I have to break up the model into separate pieces :bhead

why not? it is about average right now. ah only uses 2 cores on a cpu anyway.

wrong, you're not in the extreme gamers forum where the "average system" is an ivy bridge i5 overclocked to 4.2ghz.

The good ole debate on "What junk you got in the trunk".
Perhaps, HTC would benefit from a poll on what quality system everyone has. Maybe not, I don't know.
Why I don't want to hinder others from playing, what gives them the right to ask more from HTC to make the game better for them, if on the same token it makes me unable to play?
I know it is quite hard to believe that someone hasn't been able to afford to upgrade their system for 10 years +, but I am sadly one in that crowd. While I am currently saving to get a good system, I am unable to get it right now.
For now all I can do is ask those with better systems than mine, who want eye-candy and all that, to please wait. Endure it for a little longer.
Not only that, there is something else to consider. What about if HTC was willing to upgrade their systems? They would have to spend all their 'work-time' on that, improving the terrain and graphics and all that, instead of making new planes/tanks/submarines/sheep.
I understand your request for newer content and better looking content, but is it really worth it?
Look at Mario Bros. Would you have played that anymore if it had uber graphics ? Or if it was still a 2d scroller? Sometimes it's just the content the 'character/quality' of the game than what it looks like, but what you get from it.
For Mario, it was hundreds of hours of jumping on turtles and falling to my death.
Yes, I would love for aces high to get the upgrades to look like Far Cry 3 or skyrim, but HTC hasn't released anything on that. Sure it might be in the far future or even in the near future for all I know.
But I have one question for you.
Why do you play Aces High?
Just my thoughts.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 4400 with 2gb of RAM and a Radeon HD 6900 running on Windows XP Professional 32bit.
I do not get the best frame rates.

Idk what I have but my system struggles with clouds. Everything off I get 44-33 and 10 with the massive hordes

IMO it's the flames that don't look right..........
I would vote to shorten the flames to no more than 1.5 times the height of the object............

100$ difference.... so you know you can save up right? i mean thats what i did...
Aces high dosen't need more than 2gigs of RAM if BF3 can run on 2 gigs of RAM (tried it myself :P )
sure if aces high only uses 2 cores thats not the point, point is that those cores are worse than the cores of the i5 2500, hell the 245 dosen't have L3 cache..
A perfect example, before i upgraded my AMD athlon x4 630 (made in 2008) which could play ANY multi core game perfectly fine would kill itself on Aces high. AMD has horrible single thread performance and it really shows in aces high.
I have an Athlon 64 X2 4400 with 2gb of RAM and a Radeon HD 6900 running on Windows XP Professional 32bit.

That video card is fine, again common that CPU is holding you back.

100$ difference.... so you know you can save up right? i mean thats what i did...
ya that would be easy if i had someone else helping with the bills, or i lived with my parents...but i work for a living and support myself.

just running your computer can take 525mb (winxp) up to 1.5gb(win8 64bit) on a desktop system. and there should always be 1-2gb of memory to spare after starting your game. contrary to your statement, ram is not useless.
if only you knew what you were talking about.

it comes down to what people can afford. most can't afford what you can.
-
it comes down to what people can afford.
Very much agree. Although it is possible to stash the nickels & dimes away for upgrades, it is difficult for those of us like myself who are single wage earners supporting family on basically a subsistence income. I've managed keeping up with AH since July of '04 regardless. Just have to plan ahead the best you can with regard to everything else.
-
if only you knew what you were talking about.
Well then, I do. You see if your desktop is running 1gb of RAM AT IDLE you are loaded with bloatware buddy. A system with 2gb of DDR3 RAM would run aces high fine. when playing aces high 2gb and 32gb would play the EXACT same because aces high is not using more than 2gb of RAM. Sure if you have 50+ processes running while playing aces high then 2gb won't work of course. Also one could set all of those to background which would put the game first and only pagefile THOSE processes and NOT THE GAME. 2gb of aces high is plenty enough if you are not running 50+ processes i say again. My self I have 8gb just because I do infact run a lot of things in the background while playing games. yet not 1 single game EVER uses more than 1gb of RAM.... perhaps 1.5 gb... but never 2gb. I don't care if its BF3/BF4, farcry, metro 2033. There is no way a game is going to use that much. Lets translate 2gb means 268435456 memory locations on a 64 bit system with each location holding numbers up to 2^64 or 1.8446744e+19. I have no idea why 1 single game needs that much unless you are running a lot of background apps.
it comes down to what people can afford. most can't afford what you can.
a intel core i3 3220 is 110$ Im sure most can save up for that in a years time. People should build there own systems as its much cheaper.

no you don't know what you're talking about, that is fact. i run win7 leaner than out of the box and it takes 976mb of ram on startup, before anti-virus loads. after anti-virus loads it sits at 1.1gb with 48 processes. my laptop takes even more because of all the laptop specific drivers. now if you want to call necessary hardware drivers "bloatware", that's your stupidity. i have successfully ran a laptop with win7 on only 3gb of ram for an extended period of time, but programs like photoshop cs5 perform horribly. win8 can be leaned out to 1.1gb on startup before anti-virus, assuming you disable all the metro features and some other extraneous processes. anyone running an onboard graphics chip would be in deep trouble with only 2gb of ram on the system. running win7 or win8 on 2gb of ram in general causes a lot of swapping, which slows system performance, and it only gets worse as you open/close programs.

So you're telling people they can buy that processor and jam it into whatever computer they have and they'll be all set?

No im saying processors don't cost 500$+ for low end.

$468 in Sept 2012 as a combo pack.
I had a CyberPower PC and simply took out the old MB and put the new one in, then plugged in the new top of the line CPU. Followed the instructions. Was very simple. Reinstalled windows... and I was ready to go. :rock
Been using it ever since along with my old graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series :)
Works great and frame rate around 60fps with everything maxed except environment slider and shadows on other aeroplanes.
I also took out all the extra cooling fans since they were too noisy and installed http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ to make sure there is no CPU heat build up. The graphics card has it's own small and very quiet fan.
All works great and use it daily, heavily. :joystick:
Point is if you have a decent graphics card and reasonably good PC, upgrading to top of the line CPU, along with a new motherboard for less than $500 is easy...at least it was for me... and I'm no PC expert.
-
video card is one of the issues Midway. getting a "good one" can cost an additional $200+.
and what did you do for ram? were you able to recycle what you had? a lot of people who have systems that are borderline now couldn't do that...add another $70 for memory that isn't crap.
-

Yes, recycled everything else.
-
then take your $468 then add $200 for a good video card that won't need to be replaced next year...then another $70 for ram since what they have can't be recycled. now the "simple upgrade" is at $738, assuming they have a good power supply, that can also be reused.
if a guy has to make a choice between saving $200 for a new video card or feeding his kids...how much more difficult do you think it is for him to save $738? we can't all be privileged and live the good life. most of us are "just making ends meet", others are worse off...fewer have money to burn, but they are making the most noise for graphics the rest of us can't afford.

Besides a $500.00 upgrade bill more than a few players may have to fork out .....
What was the frame rate hit your system took before smoke and fire was toned
down in AH? There's a reason that many in the community reported issues of such
in the past.
warning - ancient systems will be discussed

Smoke's nothing 'new' - neither are the problems it causes.
All systems will take a hit if smoke is too prevalent. I'm not seeing
this wish as a true overall improvement suggestion for the whole
community.

waste of money, unless it's for emergency purposes. the only thing that one has going for it is the fact that it's an xfx brand with a lifetime warranty that is transferrable. i specify "good video card", not someone elses reject, but if you must...this one would be more appropriate.

you can sell some of your old parts. there's always somebody who will need them. I was able to upgrade to a 2500k, new mobo and 8 gigs of ram for about 300 bucks. that was 500 dollars worth of upgrade.

Processor scores are mostly badly represented with charts because they take the entire "chip" instead of the power of each core.
A low performance 4 core processor might seem to perform better than the fastest dual core processor when the opposite of that is actually true in real life application.
Even an old high end core II duo processor will outperform many of the higher rated 4 or 6 core processors of today.
