They are shipping now but from what I have read, if hitech doesn't include in AH code, it will be a nice paper weight. The generic methods used on dk1 apparently do not work. Also has to be integrated for head tracking.
How about it Hitech? Any plans?
-
Not true. Drivers are being recompiled and updated. So the same methods to use the DK1 will work. Though it would be nice to have native support.
Not sure where you get your information from.
-
From oculus and p3d forums. Are you saying head tracking will work with only a recompile?

It does not say anything of the sort on the oculus forums.
The new headtracker requires use of the new SDK. So developers will need to recompile their apps with the new headtracking routines. There are some devs already using the tracking with games like DCS, but with 3DoF only. For 6DoF devs will have to add to their software to support it.
The SDK was only released a week or so ago, the first shipment of DK2's has only just arrived in peoples hands. So developers have had little time to update their software and drivers.
-
I hope you are right!
-
Received the dk2 today. Vulcan have you received yours yet? Tried several things but nothing works so far. This may be above my pay grade?

Nope, our region is lagging. It's in processing though. I'm not in any rush as the dev's need to update code, even the SDK for the DK2 is being polished still.
-
Be sure to keep us updated on this!
WW2 flightsims in general and AH2 especially might be the perfect playground for the OR. Easy plane controls - easily HOTAS only. No need to read a plethora of gauges and MDF screens - eases the low resolution a bit. Immersion!

-
Whoa Kirin! Been a while.
Gauges are not an issue, I have zoom function mapped to a button. So I can look down and zoom in on gauges. With the new 6DoF stuff you can just lean forward too.
-
Yeah - it's been a while Vulcan... :)
The dawn of a workable consumer VR device was one of the reasons to get back into simming. Got a friend who will get a DK2 soon - hoping to get a few testflights with it.
What is your experience concerning spotting. Out of the blue I'd say it's easier with VR since a moving object should be easily spottable vs. non moving background. It's less of an issue in the AH MA because of the icons but might be a world of difference in a non-icon enviroment.

On my Z800 (eMagin headset) with OLED's I found it hard. On the DK1 I found it easy. Something to do with the contrast of the z800 vs Dk1 I think. Situational Awareness goes through the roof especially in tight fights where you get a feel for relative motion from the stereo 3D.

Doesn't it give you neck pain when you have to do the Linda Blair rear view physically instead of push button?

I do that with TrackIR all the time - no prob at all - enchances immersion and SA tenfold. I admit with a true VR tracking you probably have to bend a bit further - but I guess that is configurable.

Let's see when the 'Rift neck' symptom is going to be prevalent.

Let's see when the 'Rift neck' symptom is going to be prevalent.
The Rift DK2 will be the 4th VR headset I've used with Aces High since oh ~2005.
It's never been a problem before. As per my many previous posts you can scale the head tracking (same as on TrackIR).
I don't think "Rift neck" syndrome will be as prevalent as apple-bananas-cramp syndrome ;)

Perhaps all that head turning is making you dizzy since you seem to have a crusade against Apple despite knowing very little about it.

Finally got the Rift dk2 to work in a flight sim DCS. All I can say is wow. The immersion factor is incredible.
Hitech I hope you release a full implementation of this as I really think it could breathe some extra life into AH. It is almost like being in the real thing and it is only the price of a good monitor.

When Rift gets into production I will definately get one myself. I've been contemplating a multi monitor setup but I think VR is the direction I want to go to. Even though my wife will make fun of me doing the Stevie Wonder act in front of the computer. :O
-
I just got my DK2 in and I'm here in the Dallas area. If anyone from the HiTech team wants try it out, let me know. I have the latest SDK and will be happy to work with you guys to get a version recompiled.
-
What function is currently missing with AH? Could it be used simply as a monitor in conjunction with trackIR? I would like to use it in a motion simulator and would need the gyroscopic tracking disabled.
-

I think it may be the best solution as well. Doesn't tax the video card as hard as a triple monitor and looks like it's going to be about the price of a good monitor. My wife's worried if I get one she'll never see me again though. :devil
jimson- From what I've read in passing on it, the DK2 pretty much needs to be natively supported by the game or it won't work very well. The DK1 wasn't as limited in that respect as the DK2. Haven't done any indepth research on it, but I saw that on one of their forums.

VorpX for DK2 is out, my headsets still sitting in customs. Once I get my hands on it I'll see if vorpx plays ball with AH.
-
I had previously tried Vorpx with no luck. Downloaded the new version with DK2 implemented (in alpha) and could get into AH but no head tracking (even though roll seemed to be working). I could not figure out a way to access the clipboard so was stuck in tower with no way to quit other than killing in task mgr. Vorpx is using extended mode and I tried as both secondary and primary monitor.
I am also following the Parpar3d effort and a couple of guys have done plugins to get it working in extended mode with head tracking but everyone agrees the extended mode is a poor implementation. LM is working to provide support for direct mode which all the developers over there think will be much much better.
I hope you get yours soon as you obviously know a lot more about this than I do. As of now it is still looking like we will need Hitech's help.

I've been trying out DK2 at a friends place today. 'Elite Dangerous' just blew me away. It's implementation is awesome. The only flightsim I could try was Warthunder. Although I had some trouble with the sharpness of the picture - not much time adjusting and trying out the different cups since I am moderately near-shighted - I enjoyed the feel of flying. Landing felt so much more natural and easy - you could easily judge the distance to the ground. Amazing...!
The future is VR. I am really looking forward to the next generation of hardware and software support.
-
Got mine today, the head tracking in the DK2 is beautiful compared to the DK1.
I managed to get AH going with the Tridef drivers and DK2 in legacy mode. The distortion was a little off (warped edges) and there was some graphic issues around edges (probably coz the tridef drivers are for the DK1), and of course head tracking doesn't work.
Just waiting for someone to update OpenTrack and/or FreePIE...
-
Are Tridef drivers better than Vorpx? I didn't try them because they haven't been updated for dk2 yet but will revisit if you think they are better.

I'm an alpha backer of Elite: Dangerous so have been alpha and beta testing for some time now. I tried the DK2 in it at a recent convention and have to agree it looked awesome. We should be getting one sometime during this month. :)

DCS World is insane on the DK2, you feel like you could reach out and touch the cockpit. The 6DoF head tracking is to die for.
Hurry up with the DK2 support HT... :)
-
Vulcan - how did you get DCS World running with DK2? My friend has trouble with serious juddering. He tried the suggestions from the OR and DCS boards with no avail. What are your HW specs?

I have read that plugging in the power adapter can help with this?

i5 3Ghz, GTX660, 8Gb RAM, Win 7. I get a slight little bit of "stutter" when turning my head sharply - I've not had time to fine tune it.

Appears the Rift is sold ( in license ? ) to Samsung .....
What a shame... Would have loved to see this in AH....

Samsung is having a unique version of the Oculus made for them. This has no impact on Oculus's regular business.
-
It's not even really the same as the Rift, you slot a Samsung phone into it for watching media, and Android games. 3DoF using the phone sensor, not 6DoF - and not low persistence either.
-

As far as I have read about it FB looks into any other use for it except PC gaming. Regarding the figures, FB paid 2 billion for it and I have a very tough time accounting that this kind of money will be made in a declining market like PC games.
Yet, time will tell and we find out.

So Skuzzy when will HT have the beta DK2 code ready :devil
-
Getting contacts today - hopefully that will enchance my OR experience. Too bad there are no flightsims with decent OR support out yet (hint, hint).

A quick search indicates that there are plenty of people using DCS with AMD cards. What is your source of info?
-
Only the Rift DK 2 is a problem with AMD on DCS. I just get a black screen. Took my DK2 to my son who has a Nvidia card and it worked great. Waiting for new Nividia cards to dump my R295x. Just tired of fighting it.

Must be a driver issue. You planning to sell the old card on Ebay?
-
Haven't decided yet. If you have interest send me a pm and I will let you know. Haven't been able to find out date or specs on new Nvidia yet, just rumors.
-
Good news.
Opentrack has been updated to support DK2, I have tested it with AH and it supports full 6DoF head tracking.
VorpX appears to work with AH now.
final update.... WOW.
:D
notes: had to manually changed to video settings file to 1920x1080 res, force fov in video settings to 120.
-
Great news. Will get opentrack and try it tomorrow.

I'm still very skeptical about OR. I think people will tire quickly of wearing a pvs5 for any length of time. I suspect it will be like the cougar hotas situation, the best $400 joystick that nobody uses anymore.
It should make for some interesting nerd rage on channel 200 though. As the angry dweeb knocks his beer over on his keyboard while reaching to call someone names on chan 200.

I'm very skeptical about skeptics. Usually they are never speaking from experience. Remember floob this will be the 4th VR headset I have used with AH.

Well hopefully this one will be your last. Well see in four years who gets to necrobump this thread with an "I told ya so". :)

Why would you hope that? OR is not even full hd, there's still much room for improvement. And the ultimate VR will tap directly in your brain.

Wow a personal attack for stating my opinion on a piece of computer hardware. If that's not nerd rage I don't know what is.

Every major game studio is working with Occulus for future gaming programs. Go read a little bit Floob, better yet, watch Carmack's youtube video (you know, the guy who wrote Doom, all of the Quake titles, and made more $ in gaming before 1998 than most will in a lifetime) about the work he is doing with Rift. Regardless of what you think or feel, it's going to be the future of gaming, because the developers are making their long term future products require it. The cost will come down, remember that 300$ is for a developers kit, not a retail product.
I'll bet you that in 5 years or whatever your necro challenge is, that it'll be a retail product under 200$, and for at least 50% of the top 10 best selling games at the time, it'll be if not a requirement, something that is absolutely necessary to take full advantage of the games and be competitive with them.
Five years goes fast, I remember 2009, hell 1999 like it was yesterday on this bbs, but Rift's moving forward that fast IMO.
Over at Star Citizen they have an entire division in Canada working JUST on implementing Rift with their full release of Star Citizen and Squadron 42, once Rift is ready, they want to be ready. I read on their bbs that they purchased 50 developers kits just for the team from Star Citizen working on it. That says a lot IMO. FYI, the new version of Arena Commander for Star Citizen came out yesterday with TrackIR and 6dof working. It's amazing, I can literally point the gimbal turret on the top of my Hornet fighter out the right side window, and shoot enemy fighters as we're maneuvering and fighting. It's great, stick flies the fighter, head moves the view and guns, it's like the monocle on the AH64 apache for it's 30mm gun more or less. Can't wait for Occ Rift to be working.

To Vulcan and others, thank you for your updates. I am watching OR closely and think it might actually become a workable system this time. Of course what do I know, I have been using my TM Cougar HOTAS for the past 14 years! ;)

According to this the final version is expected to cost from 200 to 400 bucks: http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/the-consumer-ready-oculus-rift-will-launch-in-public-beta-by-summer-2015-1265010

Have you tried all of the above VR headsets to justify your opinion?

I spent a couple of hours in the MA yesterday on the DK2 headset, I was impressed with the leap in capabilities from the DK1 to DK2:
Things I noticed that were different from my Rift DK1
- head tracking was stunning, silky smooth never lost center (and it worked with my big headphones on, these use to throw the magnetic gyro in the DK1)
- colour and contrast/brightness was perfect, often on the DK1 I lost stuff to background colours
- I could easily read chat text, this was a problem on the DK1
- instruments were nice and clear
- the screen door effect is well and truely gone
Things I didn't like
- vorpx didn't seem to save my preferences for the AH profile
- there is no easy way to switch between 2D and 3D in game (not a biggie as everything is readable vs the DK1)
- can't see the vox "who is talking" text as it's in a screen corner
With the DK1 I said it was only for hardcore VR guys, I think the DK2 is good enough for those who were waiting for something a bit better. The consumer version will be awesome based on my DK2 experiences.

MUST. RESIST. URGE. TO. SELL. TRIPLE. SCREEN. SETUP.
-
Fulcrum I'm sort of in the same boat. Your pics of your setup is what motivated me to go with 3 screens for a while, 24" 144hz Asus screens. I've got a 4k Samsung el cheapo variant of the 4k monitors, and am waiting for the Asus ROG Swift 1440p 144hz to come out, but I'm wondering a lot if it's worth it with the VR stuff coming online to invest in another 3 screen set up again, and give it another whirl with AH, as I only use a single screen as the 3 screen setup with my other box made it tough for me to fight after being so used to just one view in a certain spot.
We'll see I guess.
-
Agreed. The downside is that the Oculus makes having a "simpit" obsolete. I'm also concerned about the lack of vision for the keyboard and controls. If the consumer version can overcome this, maybe by having a web cam on the unit that can superimpose a view of your hands and the surrounding area, then I'll be all over it.
Still....I might be tempted to buy the DK2 kit anyway just for the fun of it. :lol

I made a lot of progress and got Vorpx and opentrack to work. You are right this is going to be a game hanger for AH.
I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me with.
In game IPD calib. When I click on this in th in game Vorpx menu, I get a white grid covering the screen. I haven't found a way to adjust the grid and change the IPD. Do not see a numerical IPD to adjust either? Tried mouse buttons and arrow keys with no luck? How do you make this adjustment?
The AH cursor follows my head movement? If I park it a bottom of screen with mouse, when I turn my head the cursor move to approximately center of view. It is like the tracker is set to move the mouse. Is there a setting I need to change to stop this.
Thanks for your help

You'll still need the simpit. Where do you think you'll bump your head otherwise looking around? And you need to have your beverages held nice and tightly in a cupholder when you reach for it blind.

Nothing to bump my head on per say in my pit, and Ive already had problems when reaching for a drink. :uhoh

I think the keyboard concern may be overstated. Most keyboards still provide tactile feedback for finding "home row" (is typing still even taught?). If my blind grandfather can play piano and work in his garage with hand and power tools, we should be able find a keyboard and avoid spilling our drinks! ;)

Maybe. But could he also manipulate multiple controls and buttons off the keyboard and HOTAS by feel alone...especially when some of those controls are on a touchscreen monitor? That is a different story. :)
-
As far as a keyboard, yes I watched my grandfather manipulate two rows of keys along with multiple flip switches when he played the organ. Never thought about touchscreen controls.....hmmm

What I want to know is, what's stopping them from having a clear plastic cutout at the bottom of the headpiece so you can see down? I've never had my head in one, is there a reason that couldn't be done?

What they should do is to install a camera in the front section and enable a 'reality overlay' so you can temporarily see real stuff. The same camera could be used for hand tracking.

Did you turn off head tracking in the VorpX driver?
I found the best way to use IPD is to adjust it while focusing on the center of the screen - move it in and out until your eyes feel relaxed/comfortable.
-

one word: camelbak.
As for keyboard, yes you get keyboards that mark the F and H keys - my previous logitech did and it was easy as for typing in chat. My current keyboard doesn't and it is annoying. That said it's forced me to use vox more which is a good thing.
I use and X52 Pro and there is not really much need to touch the keyboard. Remember all the hat views are released for control mapping!
Games like FSX and DCS have clickable cockpits as well. I think a mixture of HOTAS mappings + clickable cockpits is the way to go for VR.

Turning off tracking in Vorpx did it. Thanks
In opentrack I am using the freetrack 2.0 game protocol and have enable both set in the settings page. I also have None for the aux tracker?
I have the mapping scaled to reach 180 at about 110 deg but I still wind up looking at headrest. Tried leaning closer to canopy to look around it but when I lean to the left it moves to the right. I guess this makes sense because my head is more than 90 deg from camera so all x movement would be reversed? Do you have problem or if not what am I doing wrong? Thanks again for your help.

Yeah theres a trackir relative setting in AH somewhere - but I'm away from home so cannot tell you exactly were it is sorry. Also if you have saved head position reset them all to default.
I think I use trackir only, aux should be empty.

Now that's news to me! I've never seen one without those marks so far, on the other hand I've never actually used any of those fancy gaming keyboards, or one without printed letters on the keys. BTW how about putting a small velcro sticker on those two, might be as helpful as braille. A drop of crazy glue might also work, but you'd better let it dry thoroughly before typing.

My ancient 15 dollar Microsoft keyboard even has the marks. They're small bumps on the keys, hard to see without looking close or touching the 'bumps' with your index fingers. I think more keyboards have the bumps than not actually.

The relative setting is working. I deleted the hps file to reset head position to default. Why did you suggest this as the default position is far back against (or partially in) the headrest. Would be easier to see behind if position more forward. Does setting a new position somehow cause problems with Vorpx or opentrack?
Also in there a way to share the mapping settings? I would love to see how you have them setup and I sure don't mind sending mine. If they are on the profile file, I guess could share this file?
The middle mouse button no longer lets me look around the screen? I think started when I turned of Vorpx tracking?
Thanks again for your help. I am almost there!

No, they are piggybacking on Oculus's idea, and they've been talking themselves up for a few years with no product delivered. Now they're doing a kickstarter. Smells a bit off to me.

If you don't use default with 6DoF AH starts doing wierd movements between positions. Just lean forward or center leaning back. No idea about the middle mouse button sorry (I literally had 1 day of fiddling before I had to leave for work stuff for a week).

Hope you have time to use it this week. It is great! I tried a fov in AH of 100 to match the rifts fov. I like it because it is more like real world. The gages look as I would expect in the real thing. Give it a try.

The next generation (crescent bay) is in the works. More goodness otw.. all good things come to he who waits. http://www.oculus.com/blog/oculus-connect-2014/
Crescent Bay is the latest prototype headset on the path to the consumer version of the Rift. Crescent Bay features new display technology, 360° head tracking, expanded positional tracking volume, dramatically improved weight and ergonomics, and high-quality integrated audio.
These enhancements allow for a level of presence that’s impossible to achieve with DK2.

Sorry forgot to mention that bit, I think I have mine set wider, but use my stick scroll wheel to change it as needed.

Yet... I see nothing that solves the inability to see around you in meatspace by those pics. Tango Foxtrot? Unless they're figuring it's just as simple as having a cutout at the bottom and they'll just slap that into the final release.
I can live with it either way, but that's my single concern about the product.

Totem, the 'ripoff' according to Vulcan is equipped for both virtual and augmented reality so it's even more interesting than the rift IMO. The only problem is that rift has such a head start that we might end up with yet another VHS/Betamax battle.

The Rift DK2 has a USB connection on it so it wouldn't be hard to attach an AR camera.

What command do you use to do that? Is there a Vorpx command that changes fov or do you use the AH zoom command? I think I must be missing some Vorpx documentation as to features and switches? Will look harder.

When this is fully implemented I think you will be surprised how little you will need the keyboard. With a good hotas and voice command setup I never need to use the keyboard. In VR the text buffer is actually very distracting. I would hope when HT implements the Rift he either puts the txt in the clipboard or in a separate pop up window. What I really would like is the ability to hear just the system txt directed at me like kills etc. I never pay any attention to the watermelon chat anyway. I am convinced that there will be a way to use your hands to control items in the virtual cockpit.

Perhaps in the MA you don't need the keyboard as much, but in scenarios and FSO you may have 2 different text channels to follow and respond to, as well as having to change your voice channel on occasion.

It looks neat, but Oculus got there first and has the marketing power of a fully operational Facebook behind it. Unless they can make it work with the HMD support games will be putting in for Oculus, I just can't see it gaining much support.

I have voice commands setup to change radio vox channels, but what I need and haven't figured out yet is a way to get the text to voice and voice to text working for the text channels.

I wish OR had a camera and you could toggle the view and see what's in front of you.
-
Any estimates on how long it will be before AH supports it and it's readily available?

You can ghetto mod one with a drill. Peek hole :rock

That is exactly what I plan to do with mine. Gotta see the keyboard! :P

If I order one of these beasts (OR DK2) can one of you who have gotten it working help me through getting it up and running for me on aces? I am oretty techie oriented, I am am VMware engineer as a job, but dont have a lot of experience with "solutioning" things for my gaming world.. I tend to click and play for games.. spend too much time "figuring stuff out" at work to do so at home lol
-
I will help if I can. I was really easier than I thought.
-
Picking up an OR DK2 this evening from a guy here locally that is selling his. Could use some advice on getting it setup and working in AH...

Buy Vorpx and download Opentrack (not the railroad software. Do you already have trackir5?

I do not have TrackIR at all...
-
so, downloaded opentrack, ran it, picked rift and loaded up AH.. no head tracking. am I misssing something here?
-
I think you have to go to the mapping screen and set up each axis. Start with a 1 to 1 ie 2 points and straight line. You can adjust when everything working.
On first screen save a profile using freedom I think. I am not at my computer so working from memory.
Did you get Vorpx?
-
Not yet, getting the headtracking going first, then ill get that part going..one piece at a time sir :)
-
I think you may have more luck getting Vorpx to work first then tracking. That's the way I did it anyway.
-
headtracking is a go, now for this vorpx thng
-
Sorry been away travelling.

Ok, so is this worth the expenditure right now, or do I wait a while??

If you like a little tinkering, yes. VERY worth it. If you dont like to tinker a little, wait for the production version. (of course the production version may need jsut as much tinkering, if it is not implemented natively by Hitech)

If you want giggling insanity try the Gyrocopter in Dayz : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTQo7t6OswE

I have Arma 3.. need to give it a try. Dont have DayZ for it though.. or is that the standalone?
-
Thanks Sol, ordered - yes I like tinkering, I'm a computer nerd, what can I say.

Yea, 6-8 weeks is conservative too. I lucked out and found a guy selling one that was in my RC aircraft club.. it made him sick to his stomach, and he didnt feel like tinkering to make it work with the games he likes.. so I picked mine up from him.. granted I paid him what he paid for it (350), and it was used, but there wasnt a mark on it, and I didnt have to wait 2-3 months! LOL
