To Vulcan and others, thank you for your updates.  I am watching OR closely and think it might actually become a workable system this time.  Of course what do I know, I have been using my TM Cougar HOTAS for the past 14 years!  ;)

I spent a couple of hours in the MA yesterday on the DK2 headset, I was impressed with the leap in capabilities from the DK1 to DK2:

Things I noticed that were different from my Rift DK1
 - head tracking was stunning, silky smooth never lost center (and it worked with my big headphones on, these use to throw the magnetic gyro in the DK1)
 - colour and contrast/brightness was perfect, often on the DK1 I lost stuff to background colours
 - I could easily read chat text, this was a problem on the DK1
 - instruments were nice and clear
 - the screen door effect is well and truely gone

Things I didn't like
 - vorpx didn't seem to save my preferences for the AH profile
 - there is no easy way to switch between 2D and 3D in game (not a biggie as everything is readable vs the DK1)
 - can't see the vox "who is talking" text as it's in a screen corner

With the DK1 I said it was only for hardcore VR guys, I think the DK2 is good enough for those who were waiting for something a bit better. The consumer version will be awesome based on my DK2 experiences.

Fulcrum I'm sort of in the same boat.  Your pics of your setup is what motivated me to go with 3 screens for a while, 24" 144hz Asus screens.  I've got a 4k Samsung el cheapo variant of the 4k monitors, and am waiting for the Asus ROG Swift 1440p 144hz to come out, but I'm wondering a lot if it's worth it with the VR stuff coming online to invest in another 3 screen set up again, and give it another whirl with AH, as I only use a single screen as the 3 screen setup with my other box made it tough for me to fight after being so used to just one view in a certain spot.

We'll see I guess.

Agreed.  The downside is that the Oculus makes having a "simpit" obsolete.  I'm also concerned about the lack of vision for the keyboard and controls.  If the consumer version can overcome this, maybe by having a web cam on the unit that can superimpose a view of your hands and the surrounding area, then I'll be all over it.

Still....I might be tempted to buy the DK2 kit anyway just for the fun of it.    :lol

I made a lot of progress and got Vorpx and opentrack to work. You are right this is going to be a game hanger for AH.

I have a couple of questions maybe you can help me with.

In game IPD calib. When I click on this in th in game Vorpx menu, I get a white grid covering the screen. I haven't found a way to adjust the grid and change the IPD. Do not see a numerical IPD to adjust either? Tried mouse buttons and arrow keys with no luck? How do you make this adjustment?

The AH cursor follows my head movement? If I park it a bottom of screen with mouse, when I turn my head the cursor move to approximately center of view. It is like the tracker is set to move the mouse. Is there a setting I need to change to stop this.

Thanks for your help

You'll still need the simpit. Where do you think you'll bump your head otherwise looking around? And you need to have your beverages held nice and tightly in a cupholder when you reach for it blind.

I think the keyboard concern may be overstated.  Most keyboards still provide tactile feedback for finding "home row" (is typing still even taught?).  If my blind grandfather can play piano and work in his garage with hand and power tools, we should be able find a keyboard and avoid spilling our drinks!  ;)

Maybe. But could he also manipulate multiple controls and buttons off the keyboard and HOTAS by feel alone...especially when some of those controls are on a touchscreen monitor?  That is a different story.  :)

As far as a keyboard, yes I watched my grandfather manipulate two rows of keys along with multiple flip switches when he played the organ.  Never thought about touchscreen controls.....hmmm

What I want to know is, what's stopping them from having a clear plastic cutout at the bottom of the headpiece so you can see down?  I've never had my head in one, is there a reason that couldn't be done?

What they should do is to install a camera in the front section and enable a 'reality overlay' so you can temporarily see real stuff. The same camera could be used for hand tracking.

Did you turn off head tracking in the VorpX driver?

I found the best way to use IPD is to adjust it while focusing on the center of the screen - move it in and out until your eyes feel relaxed/comfortable.
