Looking for a new joystick for Xmas. Currently use a X52 so looking for something around the same setup. The TM Hotus might be a hair too expensive, unless I can find some kind of deal. Been looking at Ch products and the X55. Does the CH fighter stick have enough buttons? If you have any experience with X55 or CH Produtcs your opinion would be greatly appreciated.
-
I've been using CH Combatstick, pedals and throttle for many years, very satisfied with them.
For Aces High there are enough buttons (I do not use buttons for landing gear, tail hook, bailout, etc), only for flight controls, views, guns, flaps and dive brakes. When playing around with X-plane I find I could use more buttons for some of the other functions such as thrust vectoring, wing-sweep, etc.
-
I bought a new CH throttle last year or so and I'm less than pleased with it.
For the money I could have bought an X55 but they werent available quite yet. The newer Ch stuff isnt quite as good as the older stuff and they dont support it like they did.
A complete ch setup will cost pretty close to what a warthog setup costs, although I'm including a set of peddles in the CH setup.
The X55 is about as much as the throttle alone and everyone I know who has an X55 has said nothing but good things about them. So if money is no object I would recommend the warthog otherwise I would suggest the X55.
I plan to replace my CH throttle with an X55 throttle and as a bonus I'll have a backup JS for my warthog. I broke my warthog throttle, but it was my fault.
YMMV.

CH Fighterstick, throttle and peds here. 10 years old & yet to have an issue.
-
Had the newer CH stuff had huge problems with the joystick, went to the Warthog and cant imagine using anything else. I heard the X55 is also nice just a bit light on the feel or so they say.

Hey bud I use the X52 throttle and a CH 568 combat stick works great love it, didn't like the CH fighter stick buttons set up is why I got the combat stick. The difference is the fighter stick has 2 more hat switches and the combat stick has butons where the 2 hats are on the fighter stick. I have a trackir so i don't need 4 hats on the stick rather have buttons the 2 extra hats switches.

Got my CH setup in 2004. Couldn't be happier, but it's showing it's age. Boxed it up in about 2009/10 and got an X52... wore it out and got the CH stuff out again. I hear CH aint so great these days, a shame.

CH Products.

I got a replacement CH combatstick a year ago and it just isn't the same as my 7 year old one. Spikey as hell and needs calibrating all the time might have to look at something better.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of all the hat switches either. 2 is fine. I think I'm gearing on the combatstick. Does the button on the side pointy finger change profiles or can it be used as a button as well?

I too use an OLD set of CH and I have a view switch going, but I have parts. However I was thinking of getting a T-16000m http://www.amazon.com/Hercules-2960706-Thrustmaster-T-16000M-Flight/dp/B001S0RTU0 from Thrusmaster My brother in law has it and Im very impressed with how smooth the control is. The response is very clean and accurate.

My CH stick had me falling out of the sky for no apparent reason.
I switched to Thrustmaster T-1600. It is so much better.
CH has become expensive junk.

My CH Fighterstick has 168 programmable buttons in multiple modes. Takes some getting used to however if you have been working with a twisty stick. Each unit ( stick $200.00 & throttle $200.00)total cost around $400 and some change brand new. You can however hit up ebay and buy someone's used for maybe alittle over half the cost. I suggest buying yours new it comes with driver , manual and warranty. I have had mine for 7 years and had no problems yet with it other than the colossal headache of programming the darn thing. 168 programmable buttons in 4 different mode configurations can be a beast at first. Best of luck in your search :salute

I have the Warthog HOTAS which I use with Saitek Pro Pedals. Use them for Elite: Dangerous as well as AH. :aok

Best joystick for the money control wise is the T1600.
For added buttons, the thrustmaster cougar panel is great. Split a pack with a friend or sell one.

I've used CH products for several years , throttle , stick and pedals durable , but also I am hard on my stick for some reason :aok. 8 months ago purchased the X55 , I would have purchased it just for the throttle alone , it's easy to access to dials that let me trim as I go found that to be great . Also if you don't have rudders the joystick has a Z rotation ( twisty ) you can allocate for rudders , had them for 8 months as still keep calibration great and is also little lest tan the CH product . Any Q PM me glad to help .. :salute
its also quite larger than the CH set up , here a pic of the throttle .

Yes you can use all the buttons and programming in the game I also use the hat switch as buttons for the map and zoom because I have TrackIR and don't need any hats witches. I used the in-game to program it don't use any of the software. Give me a shout on our squad forms and I'll give you a call about it

I use CH Products. But my fighter stick started having trouble going into it's second decade of use. Almost useless now. But the pro throttle and pedals are still going strong. So I am looking around for a replacement stick. Tried a combat stick. It started having troubles after a month. If I thought the HOTAS system would last 5 years or more I wouldn't hesitate plunking down a few hundred on one.
-
@ alskahawk, if your throttle and pedals are still serving you well enough, why not try a TM t.16000 with them? Might be worth the $50.
-
Thanks I ll look into it
-
I used CH products for years. Now my fighter stick and throttle are backups for the X55 setup.
I've had the X55 for over a year. I learned how to program them (Frooglesim video was quite helpful).
They hold calibration quite well. I keep them clean and use a non-petroleum lubricant on the joystick (spring base) which keeps it smooth as silk.
The X55 has tons of buttons and three modes. In AH every one of them is used for something. In terms of capabilities, both set-ups are pretty even, but I now prefer the X55 and will only change back over to CH in an emergency.
If I wanted the best stick and throttle (response and accuracy) I would be looking units that don't use pan potentiometers. Since those will bust my budget, I'm not looking.
I recommend the Saitek unit, based on my experience with them. I believe mine came with a two-year warranty, but you will want to confirm that.

Chalenge,
Wow. The Huey video was awesome.
I only watched the video, but I'll be looking at this closer in the future. I'm sure it's way out of my price range now. Watching the 'blind man's bluff' with the Oculus caused me for 'fear for my beer'. That technology still leaves me a little cold. I need to have 'complete' SA when my wife is around. :::Ducks:::

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that even high res with the Oculus is worse than I can get with a 6k projector like the Titan HD:

Yes

Thanks, I'll have to hunt around for that. I just replaced the hat on my CH set and it seems to be ok. It's one of the older versions so the quality is there, but I have been thinking of moving on to something else a bit more precise.

Fugi,
For a pan-pot set up, I would say that the X55 is at least as good as an 8-year old CH Fighterstick. That said, all the normal hygiene is needed to keep both in good shape. Dust and debris are killers.
If MFG (Crosswind rudder pedals) ever makes a stick and throttle (with Hall-effect sensors) I'm likely to be first in line. Milan Simudza is a rock star, I think.

Not sure Fugi, I didn't notice that availability on the Saitek web site.

The x55 as well as the thrustmaster T.16000m both have hall sensors, no more pan-pot stuff for these. The difference is the Thrustmaster stick is under $50 but being use to the CH stick with half a million buttons I think I would feel limited by the lack of buttons on it. The X55 looks nice, but my throttle is ok, even tho the one that comes with the X55 looks sweet! I hate spending $200 just to have a good spare laying around, especially seeing as I have never had an issue with my CH throttle. What are the odds I need a spare?
$50 or $200 is a big jump for some of us.

Would love to have the x55 throttle, its a split one. Hum maybe we can make a deal. 8)

Surprised no one's recommended an MS Sidewinder yet..
-
My Christmas present to myself is an X55...had an X52 before my full CG setup which was great but it died. CH stuff needs constant re calibration so I figured it was time for a new stick and throttle. Kind of looking forward to trying out the dual throttle in a P38.

I use the CH throttle and the Thrustmaster T1600. Seems a good combo especially with the all the buttons on the CH throttle.

Fugi - You got me! In irritation I went to check your facts on the Hall sensors in the X55. Of course you are correct. When I considered the X-55, it was less about the prime technology (pots v. Hall) and more about 'new' and perhaps the fact that I had just taken the CH Flight stick apart (3rd time) for cleaning and noticed 8-years of wear. I also made the assumption that Hall Effect sensors would not be available in anything less than a Warthog (which I couldn't afford). I am now even more pleased with the X55 and knowing I won't have to clean any pots. Thanks for the correction and Merry Christmas!

no problem, I was just trying to make sure we had the right info here.
I've had the same issue with my CH stick. I have worn out the hat that I use for views twice now. Seems I look right rear a lot! Luckily I saved my old analog stick and throttle to use for parts. Hall sensors, a split throttle and all those cool looking buttons and switches have me leaning toward a new X55 after christmas :devil
Have a Merry Christmas Ratsy!

@ alskahawk, if your throttle and pedals are still serving you well enough, why not try a TM t.16000 with them? Might be worth the $50.
Ordered the TM t.16000. My fighterstick has become almost useless. Price was right. Less the $40. Thanks
-
I ended up buying the CH combatstick. It was a fair price and I watched a video that really kinda showed how bad the button placement was on the X-55, even though it did look pretty cool and maybe a good stick. I felt that the buttons had an easier and more relaxed placement. I chose the combatstick over the the fighter stick because I'm not a big fan of a million hatswitches. The throttle seems to have enough anyway when I eventually get that. I'm also liked that the CHcombatstick had a throttle on the side aswell.
It hasn't arrived yet. So I'll be playing by mouse in bombers for a few days hahaha!

You made the right choice because it's the right choice for you...after doing your research and asking for inputs from your community. That's a good path.
Glad to chime in and best of luck with your new stick.

I hate to tell you so, but I told you so. ch combat stick sucks. hail the x55. come back in a couple of months and remember I told you so. I have owned more ch sticks than saitek sticks going back about 8 years. all ch sticks really sucked.

The old CH sticks were really durable. But I got a combat stick a few months ago, bought it used, works good except there is a bad hat on it. Ordered the T 16000 as a temporary stick until I figure out which one I want. X55 or Warthog? Or back to CH?

I have an old CH setup. I've had it for years. Replaced a bad "switch" on the hat once, and recently changed out the actual hat. I still have a couple views that work and then don't. I've been looking into getting a new stick and decided on the X55 due to the "bad press" you seem to find on the new CH stuff. The quality just isn't there any more.
The biggest problem is the Saitek stuff is on back order everywhere as they have moved their factory and are having problems getting the product out the door. :cry
-
I don't think you need to regret your decision to go CH. There might be some recent bad press, but there's years of it for Saitek. Another big plus is that if you ever have to replace it, out of the box it is going to feel EXACTLY like your last one. I used a CH from 06-11, and it was the exact same feel from day one to the end. I just replaced it and it feels like the same stick. In contrast, I used Saiteks before that and they "break in," meaning every time you I'd replace it (1 to 2 years), I'd have to retrain my muscle memory. On that note, the CH products are still around decades later. How many Saitek models have been replaced in that time? Relearning muscle memory suuuuuuuucks.

not everyone has had the same experience as you Vudak. I too replaced my 8 year old combatstick with a brand new one and the elevator axis is complete junk, spikey as hell. Had the hat switch and push buttons not worn out I'd still fly with the old one. I have done numerous things in search of a fix but it just isn't the same period.
I will thank them for the 8 years of pain free joystick use but sometimes it's just luck of the draw.
-
I'm not saying there aren't going to be lemons but I don't think Violator needs to worry either. You guys are making it seem like this stuff is junk. My points regarding model consistency and muscle memory are valid.
Edit-- The Saitek I used was the x45, which was discontinued, so I purchased 6 or 7 on ebay and found absolutely no consistency with any of them, which to me was unacceptable. Even so, we all have different objectives.
-
I have had great luck with CH. I also love the feel of them and the consistency stick to stick and over time.
-
Well I just ordered another CH combat stick to replace my 3 yr old one. Not sure about you guys but I think getting 3 years out of it was fine by me and that's why they probably only give you a 2 year warranty on either stick anyway. I had the x42 then the x52 and never got 3 years out of them. I still use the x52 throttle to this day with a combat stick. The only thing my combat stick just started to do is get glitchy around center stick. So I am lazy and didn't take it apart to clean it like I should have, instead I gave it a really good wack and snaped the stick off the base and ordered another one. ( have parts now if anyone needs some) Would like to get the x55 just to have a split throttle but I can think of spending 200 bucks on other stuff since I'll still use the CH with it. Don't worry by Violator you'll like the stick.
-
The best for me is ThrustMaster HOTAS.
-
Yeah, I've heard things about quality for most of the sticks. I know siatek got bought out by madcats so I remember people saying after madcats bought them the quality went down. I got my x52 just before the buy out in 2007 and it lasted for 7 years.
The CH stick I got was used but said "very good condition" so I'm am just praying it actually is.
The X55 just seemed to have a very disoriented button layout and I wasn't confident it would work well for me.
Praying I get it before KOTH!!!

Same experience as me with my X52. I got it just before the Madcatz thing as well. It's still going after about 8 years of flight simming, my only issue is the rotaries have pots in them and they're spiky as all get out. It hasn't been worth it to me to open it up to clean them. Other than that it's still as good as it ever was. I'm awfully easy on my gear though.

My first CH stick I bought was a used one off Ebay. It was an analog unit that I used for over 7 years. I replaced it with a brand new set that was USB only because game ports went bye-bye. I've had this set for over 10 years and the only issues I've had it wearing out the view hat twice.
So Im thinking 3 years sucks :D
Good luck with the new CH stuff. Semp says it is horrible, so keep us posted!

U want dependability try ThrustMaster.
-
There are great joysticks (CH) and then there are the rest. I have tried them all.
If things have changed the only way a manufacturer can get me to change my mind is to send one to me for rigorous testing.
And it will be rigorous.
-
CHALENGE: Have U tried Thrustmaster HOTAS? It's expensive but reliable.
-
There are great joysticks (CH) and then there are the rest. I have tried them all.
Unfortunately the quality of CH sticks (QA doesn't seem as important anymore to them) has declined since Chuck Hayes sold the company to some French industrial company. After the sale, it seems that emphasis for CH has been on their OEM products which has always brought in more money then their consumer products. It's definitely a different company now than when I worked there many, many years ago.
-
Well, not sure when the sale went down, but my CH controllers have averaged ten years lifespan. Those that I have now do not appear to be any different. Is there an OEM product that compares to what we use for gaming?
@swinger: When I buy a product from a company and their product has zero useful function I never buy those products again. There is one company that has acted that way in the past. Thrustmaster. Even Saitek worked for thirty days before failing.
Either company can still change my mind, but they will not get another dime from me until then.

Question for you gurus. If I buy a twisty stick, is is possible to disable the twist feature? I use a-s-d for rudders and prefer that.

Depends on the stick. Some of them have a lock to prevent the twist action.
If the twist can't be locked, simply don't assign any function to it. That's what I've done with my T-16000m.

Yes, very good point!

My stick history:
Logitech wingman: used it in Fighter Ace, worked great. Upgraded to twisty stick.
(2) Logitech extreme 3d pro: 1-2 years each. One had worn twist rudder, the other worn hat switch.
Saitek Cyborg X: 2 months. Had to be calibrated every few minutes. This stick soured the brand for me. It's too bad because it had lots of neat ergonomic adjustments and a split throttle.
Thrust master HOTAS: 3 years to current. The hat switch just started getting glitchy but came back with a cleaning. I love the rocker on the throttle. I use it to make zoom adjustments. This stick is the $50 one, not the A-10 Thrustmaster. Best for me so far.
-
Been flying with my new Thrustmaster T16000 for the past few days. Still getting used to it, but I like the feel of it. Great buy for the price. Nice feel, calibrates good. The only problem I have is the buttons. Not enough four ways.
-
What did you do with your previous stick?
Inside it there's a circuit board with wires going to buttons and hats and pots. Get a nice case and a fistful of cheap buttons and switches and build a nice left hand button box.
-
I still have both of them (combat and fighterstick) I am looking at changing out one of the hats from the Fighterstick to Combat stick. as that is all that is wrong with it. Maybe two of them if I can fit them in there. But I am enjoying the T 16000 right now.

Mypilotstore.Com has great pricing on CH Products.

So did you get it yet and if so how is it going bud?

Yes, I'm actually doing fairly well with it in the MA, but my 1v1 and defensive skills are a little slow. It feels weird not having a seperate throttle at the moment. It's actually larger than I thought so I'm getting use to the button placements and the look up button. I think it will be a lasting stick and can't wait to get a throttle.

Didn't you have a throttle I thought you did? If so just use that one

No, I threw the whole stick and throttle away. I'm a retard, but multiple buttons on the throttle didn't work anymore anyway.

with Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog stick / throttle you never run out of switches and buttons, also a 2-way throttle for dual engine operations. the only thing I miss for my throttle is the trim for elevator on a slider.
-
Have you got a completely smooth elevator input on your new stick violator?
I just bought another one because it's been annoying me so much. I'll recoup some of the cost by sticking the nearly new one on e-bay. The thing just wasn't right from the get go.

the CH gods have smiled on me kindly for today I have received a combatstick that works like it bloody well should do! Hurrah!

Congrats Bruv119!

But this now means that Bruv will shoot down 27 planes per frame in the next scenario.

That frame was the only time it behaved which made the issue even more frustrating.
Now I can go back to not having to calibrate everytime I login. :D
You don't know how de-moralising it is to have a stick that only performed when it wanted to (with plenty of encouragement). Now It can spread the love everytime without fail.

In 5 years I've had almost every joy stick on the market. Only one CH which I didn't care for. Even the heavy metal Thrustmaster. at $500.00! The best one I've had, which I bought about a year ago. The Thrustmaster 1600. It works on magnets and has no moving parts to break. You just have to get use to a small throttle attached to the stick. Or you can add a completely different throttle which will give you more button and switches. It's the best and only around $50.00. Kimosabe!

I've had my X55 Rhino for quite awhile now, I have yet to have to recalibrate it. Everything works still like the day I got it!!!! Split throttles are the way to go that's for sure. I love using them in the 110 lol. Now once my new pc gets here next week---- watch out!!! lol Over a year now and still very happy with it!!!! :salute  :devil :old:

The Combatstick works very well! It has very solid tendencies. I feel like my E fighting has improved by being a little smoother, while my aim has drastically improved. I cannot wait to get a throttle. I really think the CH throttle has a good layout with good location for buttons. All I gotta say is, check your 6s. :joystick: :airplane:
