Title: Why do so many people believe the U.S. hasn't went to the Moon or even space?

I've been running into people lately who believe we haven't been to the Moon or even space. In the last two cases, these were college educated people working in an engineering/technology field. One guy claims that radiation would kill anyone trying to go to the Moon. And that the U.S. has only achieved low earth orbit (though we have sent robots to the moon).
The second guy was teaching a seminar on how to use an x-ray fluorescence instrument. He said we hadn't been to the Moon too. I would have questioned him more but I needed to know how to use the instrument. He also claimed to be a "flat earther". I simply replied with "Oh".
Then there are people who say we haven't been back to the Moon because of aliens. One nutjob astronaut (Apollo 17) has been claiming that aliens have been stopping nuclear war on Earth, and I believe he is contributing to that conspiracy.
So is it mental illness, ignorance, a combination of the two, or something entirely different? I read once that people who believe in conspiracy theories are low on the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Ironically, two of the people who believe aliens have prevented us from going back to the Moon also believe that 9-11 was an inside job. They are also veterans (one a M1 tank commander in Desert Storm, another a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy).

Extremely smart people can also be eerily stupid.
I know one of these. An Engineer, worked on NASA projects. He'll help his grandkids (of all ages) with complex math problems... they take them back to school with attached work, and the teachers/professors can't figure out how he got the correct solution to the problem. It's hilarious. Nothing short of a mathematical genius.
Take this guy and watch him in ANY social setting.... he's dumber than a box of rocks.

I'm about 95% in believing we went there. Like most things the government tells me, I can't take their word it's 100% truth.

On another note, people who are conspiracy vulnerable usually subscribe to multiple conspiracies so it is not unexpected that the people you talk to who think we didn't go to the moon also believe other nonsense.

I am sat on the fence on this one...BUT...I am 90% on the side of the disbeliever. For me it is the inconsistencies with the photographs that has me doubting the most. Plus I struggle with the film of the lunar module leaving the moon and the camera panning to follow it.
I am not saying that wireless or remote control technologies did not did not exist to enable that shot to happen...I am just cynical.

The main reason people choose not to believe is that telescopes cannot see the lander, because the lens would have to be about 200 meters radius to define anything of such a small size.
It's not always about education, or intellect. Ever met someone you could overpower mentally? As in, they agree with everything you say? Some people are just that way. Others, just can't believe in anything they haven't seen for themselves without some positive proof.
There are a lot of very good reasons to go back to the moon and build a permanent space station there. You have to understand, also, that there are a lot of people that are against operations like NASA simply because they see no direct and immediate benefit for themselves. Tomorrow is just too far away for some of these people. Others just want to save turtles. Its really random, huh?

True Chalenge true. But the photos.....the photos....how are they explained? From memory.... same hill different shots with Rover and rocks moved.....shadows...explain the infill of shadows.....shadows...explain the fact a rock has 2 shadows.....shadows...explain a shadow that goes against the sun.......you know, that sort of basic stuff.
Willing to believe because if they did not go it is one hell of a cover up........but....well, you know...

We went to the moon. There is substancial evidence that supports it on all levels. You simply cannot decieve the public like that. You could not keep a secret like that from the public for this long. Many intelligent people are ignorant to the truth because they simply cannot fathom other people being right against their arguments. IMO, its a huge problem with ignorance of ones beliefs to facts in arguments that go against the general belief of such argument. Ie, since the majoirty believes it and I don't, I am right because my arguements dispell popular belief. I've dealt with a roommate who was a huge conspiracy theorist, and the only way you can delete these people in arguments is by rubbing as many studies as you can in their face. The sad part, is they still most likely won't believe it. It's ignorance of the facts since the majoirty (stupid deceived brainwashed people) believe it. It's why the majority of people have no idea what is going on in the Middle East but then blame everything on America.

One of the main reasons ISS orbit was set to 52 degrees is not to expose the crew onboard the station to radiation over weak magnetic field in polar regions ; The orbit altitude also, never goes over 250 miles closer to radioactive particles trapped in Van Allen belt. Van Allen belt was discovered in 50s, was mostly unknown in "69, over past years only more probes were sent and found all kind of particles and antimatter trapped inside. Btw, the lunar landing place was declared "Non Flying zone" ;hmm, fishy
I read about airline crewmembers being classified as "radiation workers", and take higher dose on polar routes. NASA about polar routes flight; "While one or two flights will not exposure passengers and crew to lethal doses of radiation, multiple flights definitely pose an additional health risk, Mertens says. What is your personal understanding of radiation exposure? Going to the moon may very well have exposed the crew to some pretty high doses of radiation. That being said, radiation shielding is well understood, and was likely incorporated. Claiming the ISS's location is evidence that the lunar landing never happened is a logical fallacy. The ISS CAN be located there, to reduce exposure, and still complete its mission. The same cannot be done going to the moon. So? Radiation shielding. I've stood feet from a nuclear reactor wearing a dosimeter and had zero recorded exposure. But NASA couldn't do anything about being in space?

According to wiki: The astronauts had low exposure in the Van Allen belts due to the short period of time spent flying through them. Apollo flight trajectories bypassed the inner belts completely to send spacecraft through only the thinner areas of the outer belts. Astronauts' overall exposure was actually dominated by solar particles once outside Earth's magnetic field. The total radiation received by the astronauts varied from mission to mission but was measured to be between 0.16 and 1.14 rads (1.6 and 11.4 mGy), much less than the standard of 5 rem (50 mSv) per year set by the United States Atomic Energy Commission for people who work with radioactivity.

I formerly was a radiographer then worked as an inspector at a uranium refinement plant. Gamma radiation was the biggest worry while working as a radiographer. Alpha and beta particles were the main concern as an inspector at a uranium refinement plant. Space capsules and the ISS do not have to worry much about particulate radiation, but ionizing radiation is the main culprit (especially gamma, and to a lesser extent x-rays).
The human body has been dealing with radiation for over a million years (uh oh, here we go, evolution). There are enzymes to repair radiation damage in DNA and there are genes to destroy cells that become damaged. It takes a lot of radiation to kill a human.

"We" are not. That program got killed. We have a guy in our squad that works for Space X. Even they are making progress only slowly. NASA is out for the moment, but even they would take ten years to get to Mars, and I think probably longer.
Personally, I think we could learn just as much with a permanent station on the Moon, but maybe if I had billions of dollars I might have a few more reasons to have a project of that size.

Yeah. Here's the deal. We recover debris on the planet Earth that came from Mars and that came from the moon. These are pieces that have been blown off the planet by meteorite impacts, escape the gravitational pull of the planet or moon and end up after a time crashing on some other planet or moon.
I have been to Meteor Crater in Arizona. Pictures do not do this giant hole in the ground justice. This was a big impact from a very heavy very fast nickel Iron Meteorite. Well guess what is around that Arizona Crater? Yep, a petrified forest, with petrified wood...............................

The moon does have a unique source of energy, though in very low densities: Helium 3. That would be the only economic reason to go back.
The U.S. public had grown tired of the Moon missions. People weren't even turning on their TVs to watch. Plus the Vietnam War was causing a tremendous amount of debt. Loss of public interest and budget cuts were the death blow to Apollo.

The fact that we can bounce lasers off the moon is more than enough evidence that we landed on the moon. Without the laser deflectors set up by the crews of Apollo 11, 14, and 15, we wouldn't have been able to bounce the lasers off the moon.

Russians delivered laser deflectors with their unmanned flights to the moon. They also managed to brought back 300g of a real moon regolith.

Believing in conspiracies is a part of how the brain works. Everyone does it to some extent. Its part of how we tries to make the world more understandable. (And quite a bit to protect our egos). Just look at this game, its full of "XX is a spy", "the others have a secret alliance". "our auto ack is much less accurate than theirs" etc etc. We use it to save ourselves from the inconvenient truth: That we just sux. :D
