~20 years and this hasn't been implemented, Warthunder is making insane amounts of money turning their game into an E-sport. Has this even been mentioned before (and not some lame attempt ( like in the beta) im talking with elo that will match you with players around your skill level etc, etc.

AH III has something like this, although at present I believe it's limited to 1 v 1.

HTC is getting there on this front with the 1v1 matchmaking arena, I imagine multi v multi set up options will be along shortly after AH3 release...don't think it's a top priority for 3, which I personally don't want it to be...MA gameplay is #1 for games overall success IMO

no need to troll a valid wish waystin.
That being said we can achieve these sorts of fights with a custom terrain that has airspawns. If you take a look at the mission arenas in beta and open up the populate mission bit. You can then select who is on Team A or B and their "seat" in whatever formation. Make the spawn 10k from each other and the mission goes at the allocated time with everyone near enough the same bit of airspace.
How the results get logged into some sort of leaderboard or ranking points is another matter but one which could draw more competitive players that actually want to learn and fight instead of the usual ageing, I'm about to die, I suck AH playerbase.

There is a difference between a wish and gripe. Op is definitely griping. :aok

Bruv,
You can ask someone to make you a custom arena for the custom arena area with fighter air spawns as high as you want them. I have a custom terrain with an air start for fighters 3k over the drones so I don't have to waste time climbing to test something. Then 12k over some task forces to practice taking out the cruisers. I have a bomber air start at 15k to test level bombing. And bomber air starts at 1250ft to test torpedo's and B25H against task forces.
Aircraft spawn entry point objects can be placed at any alt on a terrain. The MA is limited to spawning on the runway for obvious reasons. You don't even need two bases, just two air spawns at the same alt a mile apart with killshooter off.

To be honest...he shouldn't have to make a custom arena...

Hi Bustr,
MickyD designed the 1vs1 custom arena to satisfy our fight training with air spawns etc.
I went about making a squad type multi air spawn map drawing out a football pitch / superbowl for Squad Dueling however we have minimal to no interest in squadrons actually flying or fighting one another so it is on the shelf.
A simple feature like the one requested could help rebuild the interest in 1vs1, 2vs2, 5vs5 etc. Those other freemium games go for 16vs16 in a confined space and they seem to be rather successful. Personally I don't like that format but for a special event or competition then it makes sense to have something similar. These guys want to spawn and shoot/fight something. Not spend 10 minutes finding a flashing base.

Pretty simple concept. I'll borrow from Starcrafts league system as an example, so let's say they implement the same thing. Everyone starts out in the bottom of the bronze league, each win moves you up gradually into silver, gold, platinum, diamond, masters, grand masters.

I would like to see a csgo type system as it seems to be able to always get even matches, and even allows for grouping of differently ranked players to find good matches.
Ranking System Explanation
SYNOPSIS
I'm going to start off by making it clear that the ONLY thing that affects your rank is wins/losses/ties of ROUNDS. The Competitive Matchmaking system is based on the chess ranking system called Elo. Winning ROUNDS will always gain you Elo points, losses will always lose you points, and ties depend based on the average ranks of the two teams. Essentially, each round of a match is treated as a chess game. Before the match, the system will calculate how many rounds you are expected to win based on the average ranks of each of the two teams. After a match, the system will compare its prediction with what really happened. Kills, score, weapons used, or getting reported do not EVER affect your rank or how many Elo points you get.
Previously, I have stated that only wins/losses/ties of MATCHES affect rank. After several people have told me that they have gained rank after a loss, and a few people have shown me screenshots, I have now given new thought into how the rank system works.
I still highly doubt that individual performance plays ANY role at all in your rank, considering that it is still possible to end up on the very bottom of the scoreboard and gain rank. Furthermore, it appears that the games that are really close have a lower chance of changing your rank, considering ties or losses almost never change your rank. It would also not make sense on Valve's part to make individual performance a role in ranking, considering CS is a team-based game and considering how there are simply too many factors to account for. For example, a noob player could sneak up from behind and kill an extremely skilled player. If individual performance affected rank, the high-ranked player would theoretically lose a lot of points from getting killed by a low-ranked player. However, we know that this scenario does not accurate represent the skill levels of either player, because most likely the skilled player is fighting other enemies and the noob just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Also, even moderately skilled players with good weapons such as the AWP can easily kill an extremely skilled player, and this would not accurately reflect the skill levels of either player.
There are 18 ranks in CSGO, the lowest of which is Silver 1 and the highest of which is Global Elite. The majority of players fall between around Silver 3 and Nova 2, with relatively few players being below Silver 3. There is a sizable population of Nova 3-4s and Master Guardians, but it is nowhere near the number of the lower Novas and high Silvers. Eagle ranks and above are rather rare and take years of practice to attain.
WINS
You ALWAYS gain points from winning rounds. However, the amount gained may be almost nothing, or it may be a great number. Winning against a team that is, on average, higher ranked than you will get you more points depending on the magnitude of the difference. Winning rounds against a lower ranked team, in converse, will give you fewer points. The amount of "rank points" you gain for a match depends based the number of rounds you win. It is therefore possible to win 7 or so games in a row and not gain rank, or win just 1 or 2 games and gain rank.
LOSSES
Losing rounds will ALWAYS lose you points, regardless of your team's average rank or the enemy team's average rank. Like I said before, however, the amount lost depends on the difference of your team's average rank and the enemy's average rank. Losing to a very high-ranked team will not lose you much points at all, while losing to a low-ranked team will lose you many points.
TIES
It is possible to gain or lose rank in the event of a tie. Getting a tie does not mean that no points are transfered between the two teams. The team with a higher average rank will lose points in the event of a tie, and the lower ranking team will gain points. The amount of points lost or gained depends on how different the average ranks are between the two teams. Two teams with the same ranks are expected to be tied.
FRIENDS
"Should I play with low-ranked friends?" It is up for you to decide. Yes, matchmaking will take into account your low-ranked friend when searching for games, so most likely there will be someone around the rank of your friend as well on the enemy team. I would suggest, however, that if they aren't going to play seriously just take them to Casual mode.
"Should I play with friends of similar ranks as mine?" It most likely will help. Playing with friends rather than randoms will greatly increase cooperation and teamwork, and on average I would say you win more playing with similarly ranked friends than with randoms.
"Should I play with high-ranked friends?" If you want to play with high-ranked friends so you can keep winning and gain rank, I would say definitely do NOT do that. You may gain rank but it would not accurately reflect your skill, and when you are playing by yourself you will find yourself frustrated by significantly more skilled players. You are also hurting your teammates, who will lose games because of you. Eventually, you will probably lose rank and return to your previous rank anyway, so why bother?
ADDITIONAL NOTES
Sometimes people complain about losing just 1 game and then decreasing rank, and then not being able to level up again even after 5 wins. If it appears that you have only lost 1 game and then lost rank, it is probably because you have lost several games a few days ago. The game does not reset your Elo points just because you haven't played in a few days (although you will have to play 10 games to regain your rank if you haven't played in a few months). Everytime you gain or lose rank, your are put back in the "middle" of the Elo point spectrum, so losing 1 or 2 games right after you gain a rank will not lower your rank again.
Let's say you start from 0 points, gain 1 point for every round win, and lose 1 point for every loss. In reality, the number of points you gain or lose is not constant and depends on the ranks of both teams, but let's just say it is for example's sake. You have to get to 10 points to raise rank, and get to -10 points to lose rank. When you gain or lose rank, your points reset to 0.
Many people also wonder if their ranks truly represent their skills. In the long term, it does. Everyone has a match every so often in which they do very well, and it is in these moments that people generally get angry for their low rank. However, they forget all the times when they perform just average, and the few times they completely screw up. These cancel out, and after playing many matches your rank will more or less reflect your CURRENT skill. That being said, however, CS is a game of practice. The lowest rank I have ever had was Silver 4, but after excruciating practice my rank had continually increased and it is now Master Guardian. Unless you already have an extremely high rank, it is almost unheard of that the more you play, the lower your rank will get, so don't be afraid to keep playing matchmaking for fear of losing your rank.
A game would consist of multiple "rounds" where one side could pick the year, the other could pick the theater . then the planeset could be there to choose etc etc.
-
I will bet the best you will ever get is the ability to match up to some maximum number per side with each side getting the choice from the match creator of ride types like the mission editor allows.
How much complexity do you need to inflict on people who just want to shoot each other? Hitech some time back discovered the more complex he made something in the MA, the less players used the process. And the more things HTC has to take back and perform the creation process, the more salary's have to be paid. How many people will really pay more than $14.95 for this game especially after the last 7 years of the world economy?
Small terrains are not very hard to make especially with the new terrain editor.

in other words you have no idea. go online and look at the score of those at the top. that is not the definition of skill, that is the definition of being skilled how the scoring works.

Uh, what? I just told you how that system works. I borrowed it as an example and gave you the quick and dirty example rather than the dissertation version a few posts above me. The exact nuts and bolts (numbers behind the scenes) nope, don't know. But nobody outside of the people that made the game do. I can tell you how that particular system works in more detail, but it would likely go over your head anyway. Copy pasta below of the in depth explanation. It's really not that much different from the score system already in place.
Qualifying and Ranks
A new player is expected to qualify before entering a league. They must take part in 5 qualifying matches before being put into a league and division.
After a hidden[4] period of time, their skill level will be reevaluated.[5]
Players gain points for defeating opponents, especially stronger opponents. Before a match starts, players can compare their ratings – usually, one player will be "favored" over the other. If a player defeats a favored opponent, they will gain more points than if they defeat a weaker opponent. Players also gain points from a bonus pool (sometimes called "rested points")[4] for periods of time they have not been playing for. Players gain these points at a slow rate when they're not playing, up to a cap at the end of the season. When a player who has accumulated bonus points wins a match, they gain a share of bonus points equal to the number of points gained for winning the match.[4]
When a player gains points, they increase their rank and may even shift leagues. A player that loses points will, in turn, lose rank and can fall to a lower league.[4]
On occasion, a player will face opponents from a higher league, in order to test their skill.[4]
Playing more games results in a more accurate skill level.[6]
The internal rating is not wiped or reset when league ladders are wiped and is separate from ladder points.[6]
To gain a league rank, a player usually needs to earn the number of division ladder points shown on these charts.[7] (OUTDATED)
Each team has a separate skill rating. Individual team mates have very little effect on the team rating, except to determine what placement matches they are put in.[6]
League Types
As of Heart of the Swarm, Blizzard changed the league percentages as follows: Bronze 8%, Silver 20%, Gold 32%, from the previous 20% each.[8]
The Diamond league has 18% of the players in it.[6]
League Type Notes
Grand Master League Consists of the top 200 players on the server, and has been available since patch 1.3.[9]
Players qualified for the league following the first week of a season as of October 24th, 2011, the start of the fourth season.[10] Inactive players who allow bonus points to accumulate will automatically be removed from the league.[11]
A list of the winners, updated in real time, can be found on the Grandmaster League page on the official Blizzard site.
Master League This league represents the top 2% of StarCraft II players in a region.[12] This league was added in patch 1.2 in January 2011.[13] It is available for 1v1 through 4v4 matches.[14]
Diamond Only has 18% of players to allow for the 2% in Master league.
Platinum Standard league. 20% of players
Gold Standard league. 32% of players.[8]
Silver Standard league. 20% of players.[8]
Bronze Standard league. 8% of players.[8]
Practice Features slower-speed games with novice anti-rush maps for newer players. Players can play only 50 practice matches, and only upon creating an account. Once a player leaves (voluntarily or otherwise), they may not return. Blizzard Entertainment is trying to prevent "smurfing" of this area.[15][16]
Divisions
Each league is split into divisions of about 100 players from the same area of very similar skill levels.[17] Players are ranked against each other, and there are seasons of play. Tournaments held at the end of a season will determine division winners, who then compete for League championships.[18]
Divisions have names such as "Silver Tal'darim Bravo". These names can be any reference to the StarCraft universe: the original game (ex.: Reaver, Valkyrie, Duran), novels (Ramsey, Bhekar Ro), mangas (Artika, Phash) and even StarCraft: Ghost (Grizzly).
The top eight players in each division qualify for tournament play.[19]
The pro league does not have divisions.[20]
Prior to 2012 season 4 not all divisions were created equal, but this wasn't transparent. Blizzard removed these tiers, meaning someone's rank in their division is giving a more accurate representation of their skill.[21]
Damn, and I thought using the starcraft system would be a decent simple example... /edit bustr, the difficulty in making the maps makes zero difference if they don't put them in rotation anyway. And as far as complexity goes, seems that HTC realizes matchmaking (at least on some level) is wanted otherwise it wouldn't be in the works. Some people, and I'm included in that group, get bored of the endless sandbox experience.

estes that is no way to prove skill. it just proves you killed somebody. and there's a thousand ways to kill anybody.

Doesn't matter what the wish nor even if it completely doesn't concern you at all (like in this case) you always manage to find something negative to say.

The maps would be in rotation if anyone made them. We have a paucity of players who wont get off their pontification boxes and build the terrains they so elaborately pontificate would solve all this game's ills.
We have tested in the alpha and the beta since 2014 massive mission AI bomber streams over the continent with about 200 planes. New game engines tested as steal the sheep, capture the flag and the new 1v1 dueling engine. 1v1 dueling is not complex, it just gets two like minded people into a fight quickly, the AI mission code was repurposed from what we were told. Who knows you may get up to 5v5 with mission editor kinds of matchup choosing.
By the way, the AH3 terrain editor is pretty easy to use or is this just more paucity......

Sports like Golf have a handicap system based on recent performance does it not? If you have zero skill AND you're interested in improvement it's irrelevant. Participate and die. A lot. Duelling against more skillful opponents and reflecting on how you could improve each time is the path to improvement. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Even some (not all) of the top sticks will usually help someone else if asked.

In the custom arenas you can fight any way you want, on any map, with any airplane.

Custom arenas aren't the same as a match making system. Notice the screenshot I just took in starcraft. Does that look anything remotely similar to something you could do in a custom arena? (http://i.imgur.com/yDWLDkp.jpg)
-
Of course not, but I know that system is also highly flawed.
Now if Hitech would program a ladder system into the custom arenas and allow scheduling duels then that would be different, but you could also go with a manual system. Lusche and his piechart system would be the perfect ladder manager.

That's what the radios are for. You know . . . ask someone. Presumably if they are in the arenas for dueling they will also go to a custom arena.
-
Every system has flaws. Don't even sit there and say the score tricks here don't. :) If your options are play something like the picture I linked above (by that I mean the matchmaking system, not necessarily the game just an example), or the sandbox MA, spamming 200 HOPING you get a few people to screw with setting up a custom arena? They (HTC) even at one point anyway, apparently agreed they thought some sort of system that had progression in it was needed when they started working on combat tour or whatever it was called. How long can you really fly around the same handful of maps, and planes?

If aces high had a ladeer system half as good as starcraft 2 that would be a very exciting update for me and I know a lot others...especially for more then just 1v1. I always wanted to see a 2v2 ladder and 4v4 would be excellent too.
