Title: The Expanse
Post by: Gman on January 28, 2017, 06:55:21 PM
Anyone else like the first season of this show, and/or read the books?  Season 2 is coming up in a few days, Feb 1st it's a 2 hour season  opener, looks really good from the previews.  The author(s) post regularly in the literature section of George RR Martin's Westeros fan site too, and answer any questions thrown their way usually.  I've just finished the first book and an staring the 2nd, really interesting take on a future in our solar system, great ship design etc.

glad they have made a second season.   Thought I was the only person who watched it.    :D

Like the way they try and make things more believable and gritty rather than the star trek / star wars kind of stuff.

It's my favorite new show. In equal first place with Westworld and The Man in the High Castle. (And The Americans although it isn't exactly new anymore.)

Me neither, sort of the same thing as Game of Thrones, had no idea there were books, hadn't ever even heard of Martin, untilt he previews started coming in early 2011 for GoT on HBO.  There are 2 writers for the expanse, one writes one group of characters, one writes another, and they'll swap from time to time, using the same POV structure that Martin uses in Song of Ice/Fire.  They have stated in posts that they have many more books mapped out, and there is a lot of great material already, so it's a great series to get into in terms of longevity.

I've read all but the last book and will soon. Binge watched season 1 two weekends ago and looking forward to season 2. Corey is very good compared to most modern sic-fi writers. I'm very interested to see how far the series goes with this. There is enough material for at least 5 seasons and not sure if the latest book is the last...

Great opener, great battle scenes at the end.

Donnie boy, the authors have said in posts that they have many more books already mapped out and story boarded.  Lots more to come, rumours of a PC game as well.

Good news Gman! There are so many directions the story can go, it would be a shame for it to end so soon.
The price on the new book has turned me off a bit, but I'll break down and get it.

I really liked the season 2 opener. Very good! I especially like the actor cast as Bobby Draper. I think they missed the mark a bit with Naomi, physically, but I'm warming to her portrayal. I'm sure it's very difficult to get all of the characters cast to be physically accurate.

Excellent story and characters ruined by the introduction of the silliness of the ancient alien infection blob takeover driven by corporate greed

Quit about 2/3 way through the first season (felt it was a bit slow for my tastes, and too many simultaneous story lines to give each a proper treatment), but I went ahead and watched the first episode of season two. Much better. I couldn't go back and watch the last few episodes of S1; it's not available on Xfinity's on-demand content, and I don't have Netflix or Amazon Prime. However, thanks to the excellent "Recat" video (awesome!), I was able to dive back in.

The books were awesome, good character development. I though they have done a decent job on the series, must be hard to choose what to have in the TV show and what to leave out. I highly recommend reading the books, you will understand a lot of the reasons the way people react to stuff on the show.
My 2 cents

Both authors have said they have a 9 or 12 book (12 is the most recent info they've given) story all boarded out and mapped/planned.  So, another 3 or 5 books, at least.  They've also said that due to ratings and how much the execs love the TV production, they plan on a long Game of Thrones like run.  The TV series is just picking up steam too IMO, this season has been fantastic so far, the 2 episode opener, and it's apparently according to those who have seen the first 1/2 or so of the season's shows that are "in the can", it just gets better.  Can't wait, this is the best TV out there right now.

The Man in the High Castle is an excellent TV series. However, it is only loosely based on the story in the book. It's kinda its own thing set in a similar setting.

Frankie Adams, she is a 6ft tall kiwi of samoan heritage. But her acting for the role is terrible, she is supposed to be a Marine Gunnery Sargeant - but she comes across as a somewhat angry teenager. I imagined her more like a Fijian - those gals are tall and very athletic.

The Expanse is the best Science Fiction on film ever.  TV or Movies.  Far and away the best.  The best physics for space travel, very realistic.  Excellent story and compelling characters.

I've read the books and seen the entire first season.

This is not to be missed.  I'm a HUGE SciFy fan and this has me hooked.

The stand out of the whole season for me was pouring a glass of water on Ceres, which has been given an eccentric rotation (it's not round, so the centre of mass is weirdly placed) to give the advantage of limited gravity to the inhabitants. He started pouring off to one side and and it spiraled into the glass which was somewhat "over there".

If I can't get it legally, I will skip it.  Just saying.

SyFy has a tendency to hoard their really popular series for a while.  Heck, they released "Dark Matter" into the streaming services almost instantly.  You can gauge how well a show is doing with them by how long it takes them to get it into streaming services.

The Expanse must be doing well.

Like the Series and have read all the books.   The only problem I see is that if they keep going at the current rate they will never make it to the end of the series.  It took 2 seasons just to get the protomolecule to Venus, so at the this rate the real good stuff should be airing in the year 2025 or so.

I think "Bobbi" is poorly cast. She is bigger then average but still to much baby fat and she runs around like a little kid wanting to play with war. If I hear one more "let us at earth" comment from her I'm going to puke. Theres 20b people on earth, are a few Marian marines going to kill them all?

By the time you reach gunnery SGT in the Corp you should have some maturity and leadership ability. She has none. Now a good actor for her role would have been the girl who played the admiral in BSG Razor, at least a younger version. Now theres a woman that even scared me.

Again, her being a whiny brat is not the actor's fault, but the screen writer and director. She's just doing what they want her to do.

Anderson Dawes is up to his old bag of tricks again. Splitting up the opposition, changing their loyalties. I know he got that #2 on Tycho to stab Fred in the back and get that scientist off the station in a different ship. Turning the kid was easy, just promise him some woman and wine. Now he's working on Naomi who already left that goo floating out there instead of doing what they wanted to.

I only read the first book when they were first written so everything now is pretty new to me. The books are good but I have so many other books open all the time at the same time its hard to keep up.

I'll give this on a bit more time yet - none of the really good stuff happens until Bobbi gets to Earth.  Too bad Rhonda Rousey can't act - she would have been a sufficiently believable kicker of backsides to play a marine.

Hah, I got yelled at on another board for pointing out the same thing, that Bobbi in the books is a 6'5 muscle bound monster of Martian genetics, while in the TV show she looks like miss Piggy, her silver under armor suit looks like it has an air bladder puffed up in the middle, very rolly polly looking.

In a later book a Martian character is on earth, and can't believe the propaganda from Mars is all wrong, and that 30 billion "earthers" aren't just fatsos sitting around taking free drugs and eating free food, but are just as motivated and switched on as the Martians think themselves.  They are overdoing it a bit on the TV show, every time there are MMC Marines on screen, there are lines about "bags of crap" from Earth and how they should be invading yesterday.  This and fat Bobbie Draper are the only 2 issues I've had with the entire show, it's been a near perfect TV sci fi show to this point, every episode has had something I've enjoyed.

She's near perfect...the problem for the Bobbi character, there just isn't a polynesian actress in Vancouver that is 6'5" and muscle bound.  At least she's 6' - just needs to buff up more

As the saying goes... 'cause 2/3 ain't bad'.

Now - how many of you starting singing that meatloaf song in your head?  :D

Guilty! Meat Loaf was an underappreciated musical genius of his time. I'm actually in the process of recording a country cover of that song, btw. I'll let you know when it's finished.

Oops. Filming location is 'TARANA' (as we Canucks call it) not 'KOOVER.'  Battlestar Galactica was filmed in Koover (my bad).

Sabre - YOUTUBE BABY! We'll make it go viral. :x

Any comments on this weeks episode? Watched it last night.

Yeah, I watched it last night, too. Fred Johnson seems to have a short memory about people saving his behind, when he started to argue that the Rossi belonged to him. Good episode overall.

When Drummer picked up the gun, do you think she was she getting revenge or tying up loose ends?

In the book they have an argument about the missiles, miller etc. There is a time gap where Holden has been doing anti-piracy work, breaks up with naomi because he's acting like miller (ruthless). In the book there is no crazy scientist that escapes tyco.

No they didn't send it into the sun. Naomi faked it and left the torpedo intact near a space rock to collect later. What she showed Holden was a simulation.

I'm still hooked, but last night's episode seemed to drag a little for me. and Bobby is just too soft and squishy to be any kind of Marine...

Well I know what happens to that PM missile in the book tho I wont say it and ruin it here. Actually in the books its already happened. The last two episodes have been boring frankly. Two more to go this season.

Has anyone read Babylon"s Ashes? I want to, but it's priced a lot higher than the first 6 or 7 books.

Great episode last night but all the commercial breaks were driving me nuts. For threatening to cancel they aure are selling a lot of commercial time on the show.

The "real" Bobby finally broke out. She was smacking guys left and right.

Gman was kind enough to lend me a copy and I just finished it last night. I was not dissapointed. It actually makes me more dissapointed with the series after reading it. Naomi is of asian descent for Pete's sake. Holden is not a man-boy. Amos is bald and Bobbi is a life taking beast, not the Stay Puff Marshmallo Girl. But I'm still going to watch every episode...
