Congrats!

Kudos, HTC.

:aok :aok :aok :aok And the next step?

Congrats HiTech.
I really hope this does bring more players to the game and we as a community can come together to help train and nurture a new generation of fresh fis... I mean combat pilots. :devil
-
:aok :aok :aok :aok And the next step?
The next step is for HTC and Steam to come to a deal. If that happens then HTC will have to do the software to get Steam and AH to work together, and then it will be added to the Steam store.

This could be the beginning of a good thing we all have been hoping for. Congratulations Hitech.

AGAIN HiTech has not made a decision yet to with steam or not
you'all are jumping the gun as usual.

Reminds me of when Gamestorm picked up Air Warrior from Kesmai.

How do we benefit from using Steam? Is there a users fee involved? As you can tell I have not used this program/app. I am not sure what it is :headscratch: :old:

We benefit allegedly by exposing the game to the millions of people who use Steam as their sole resource to determine whether an online video game exists or not. More players will appear in the arenas ushering in a renaissance of incredible air combat and awesome gameplay.
As HT said, for current users, precisely nothing will change. Zero. Zip. Nada. What you do with AH today is exactly what you will do with it after they release it on Steam. (if they do) Your rates will not change due to Steam. How you log into the game will not change due to Steam. How you pay HTC will not change due to Steam.
It is simply a distribution center. Sort of like Amazon for video games. One stop, most things are available for sale there.

There is not any benefit to players using steam. There are some detriments.
It's benefit to HTC would simply be added exposure.

In this vein I encourage players to post about AH as much as possible. Facebook, YouTube, Disqus, wherever. Hell, call Rush Limbaugh and ask him if he has heard of it just to get the name out there. Whatever it takes.
Also, if you have email addresses for people who used to play....drop them a line. Get them back.

Thanks for the responses. Hitech this old man is quite content continuing down the same path I have for the past 15 or so years. I certainly don't need any detriments at this stage :old:

:headscratch: , I was always under the thought, that Kesmai owned/launched the Gamestorm website, along with most of the other games that Gamestorm hosted, outside of several MMO games that they hosted that were created by others...
John Taylor and Kelton Flinn ( the Founders of Kesmai)
Jonathan Baron
Rich Lawrence
Jeff Hanna
Gordon Walton
Gary Cooper and others.......

IIRC, Kesmai was purchased by Fox News Corp in the mid-90's and then afterwards started Gamestorm because AOHELL was considered too expensive for most games due to its hourly pricing and led to Kesmai suing AOLHELL for monopolistic practices and settled out of court.

Yep, but Gamestorm was created under the Kesmai name,is what I always understood.........yes, they did sell or merged with Fox News corp? is that the correct name?it was something News Corp, all at same time, Gamestorm launched the Big Week Beta ( originally AW2, quickly switched to AW3 ) while other Kesmai games and Mythic games were on Gamestorm........ Kesmai had like "BattleTech", Mythic had like "MageStorm" just to name a couple others...... theirwere more...... the NewsCorp kept it going under the "Kesmai" name though, even on the Gamestorm website.....
then EA shut down AOL games then shut down Gamestorm, etc etc etc

Knowing your history with other outfits in the gaming industry, I hope it's not too detrimental. I can relate in the music industry. Always wary of getting screwed over.

Congrats Hitech. AH is like Hotel California - you can check out any time you want but you can never leave.

I think that their are some benfits for the current players.

It will be a sad day if your car affiliates with gasoline.
Since Steam has a huge monopoly on distribution of PC games, and since more gamers visit both the Steam website and use the Steam PC application than any other single thing in the PC gaming world - how is this a sad day? Obviously there are costs to a company like HTC in terms of whatever Steam charges them per customer, but any customer that comes to HTC through Steam is a huge bonus, a customer that was VERY unlikely to have ever come in through some other route. They can always just jump off the Steam click through subscription system - or whatever that ends up being - and join through HTCs website.
Most smart gamers will figure this out on their own anyway, and understand that having Steam running in the background will be an unnecessary thing...
Congrats HTC. Lots of action happening recently, how can any of it can be called "sad"? Very positive steps since AH3 has come out, so many things, from Bustr's map, to VR, and now to Steam.

Hopefully, you are joking. At least help the guy with the chat function. Maybe after shooting him down a few times, you could offer some tips.
How many people stay to pay is the question. :old:
The player community will be a factor, along with game play, etc. Not all veteran players need to be jerks all the time. :bolt:

As I said previously... It is my opinion over time HTC will loose some its
autonomy and succumb to the pressures of such a mingling :bhead
I believe (though not steam) AW fell after just such the "partnership" with EA

EA BOUGHT Air Warrior and then closed it out as they only wanted the code.
Steam is nothing more than a portal, doorway to a huge library of games. Millions of players log in and search the library and buy/subscribe to the games they want to play. Steam has no control over what HTC does with HIS game.
Two completely different scenarios. What is hoped is that Aces High gets a lot more people to look at the game, and enough to subscribe that it makes the work HTC will have to do to link with the Steam portal/Library to cover the cost, and maybe a bit more :devil

Basically Steam gets a percentage of every sale(=monthly subsciption) generated through them. That's all. Steam doesn't have anything to do with the game itself, has no share in it, no say about gameplay. It's a distribution platform.

It will be a "sad day" if they dont get more players and improve game play. Even the slight bump, which we seem to have lost, from the post AH-3 upgrade caused a noticeable improvement in game play. Instead of a 130 to 160 number of USA prime time players we went up to 200 to 230 and the fighting improved quite a bit. Some of the nights even brought back some of the old excitement.

What about all the Free-to-play games on Steam? I can't figure how they make $$ on those, unless the game supports micro-transactions (but I'm not sure all do that)?

So far I have not seen any game on steam where you can not spend money in any way. Does anybody here know one?
-
They do have some say on what game goes on, so they do control "gameplay" to an degree.

HiTech
There are some added benefits in the user interface if you play other games through steam or don't use a second monitor.
Shift Tab brings up the steam interface overlay over your game play so say a player could look at the forums, look up information on a plane, a specific date in history, what ever you could think of on the internet without closing the game and if you got a check 6 while looking something up you can just shift tab back into play.
honestly going to try to talk POTW into all being through steam when it happens just so we can send messages through the steam chat system.
-

Steam takes a cut of all sale transactions (subscriptions, micro-transactions, etc.) that uses the "Steam Wallet".

Steam has now Discontinued the Green Lite program and is moving onto a new and more clear cut way for developers to get their games on Steam.
Previously greenlit games will be reviewed and added over the next several weeks, that is if Hitech chooses to as well. I E-Mailed Skuzzy sometime back about getting on steam and they claimed the fees charged from steam for hosting the game would increase subscription fees. Wonder what has changed…
-
Hopefully, you are joking.
Yeah almost totally :rofl I did shoot him down twice before realizing but after PMing him I was unable to get a response despite chat instructions.

January 24, 2017:
Steam is too expensive. We would have to double our monthly subscription rates to make any money. Steam is suited for one time charge games or fremium/free games.

You don't have to join Steam as HiTech already stated that the non-Steam version will remain if he decides to go the Steam route.

Your operative word is "roughly". Only the free market can cause changes to products :aok
What I am saying is having to pay a fee to Steam may place HTC in the position of raising
its subscription fee and or curbing development of the game
As I have said before, I don't have a problem paying $10 or $15 more on the subscription to AH
just to keep it autonomous
But.... thats just me :rock
-

More? You were a subscriber during the many years HTC charged twice their current rate, if I recall? Wasn't it $30 a month for quite a while? And that was when the dollar was worth more than it is now.
I'm not saying it will come to that, I'm just saying we all paid more (those of us still around) and it was still worth it when we did. Sub is about $15 monthly right now. I know I don't speak for everybody, and I know paying LESS is BETTER, but I honestly wouldn't feel slighted at all if I had to pay $20 monthly. It's a matter of value for your money and we're still well above the norm for AH, IMO.
-
Wasn't it $30 a month for quite a while?
$29.95 until August 2001. :old:
-
Hitech got in under the bell, I like to belive AH3 would still pass the new review process with no problems.
Here is the stated reason Green Light is going away:
Valve said that game makers have complained about the opacity and uncertainty of the Greenlight process. The company also noted today that since the program’s debut in August 2012, it has received more than 90 million votes from nearly 10 million Steam users.
An Indi developer can ask all of his players to ask all of their friends to help get green lit by registering and voting, but not many of those friends are players of his game. Kind of open to abuse up front knowing how helpful gamers can be to people or institutions they like.
After following a bunch of links to forums and Twitter with conversations by players who have the Steam community in common. Besides the games from Steam being a common bond for that community, all the ramifications of modern generational "social justice" as a chip on their shoulder ranks number 2. It will be interesting if this moves forward to the stage that we get an influx of the Steam community visiting our forums. Some of us older guys don't talk too good by modern sensibilities.... :O
Skuzzy, any chance you could just mail me a mussel, I'm getting splinters from your MOD stick..... :bhead

I pay more for insurance now so some deadbeat doesn't have to. I pay more taxes so some deadbeat doesn't have to.
I would just hate to pay more to play a game so that someone from steam can play. If they want to use steam, let them pay.
Money is not the issue. I have paid some months for a couple of players or so that were having some difficult times. Not because I was asked to and certainly not because I had to.
-
Shuffler,
The first page when you login with the free to play offerings may be the answer to this by it being expanded in some limited form. Maybe Hitech increases the number of players allowed in custom arenas to 64 and Skuzzy puts up something designed by Waffle to expose them to a more Melee arena experience without all the toys we get for $14.95. Then the AI mission arena, if the massive bomber mission over Europe mission was friendly enough to PCs across the spectrum, it would make a good substitute for getting an SFO experience. I tested it during the alpha on both sides of the conflict in all of the rides, and it was breath taking with the weather front that stretched across the continent and the gigantic air battle that dragged on for miles to the target. BoB had one of those with massive numbers of He111 to defend against or fly with. The Bf109 E4 would need a body lift into AH3 standards.
Hitech had us test some excellent stuff that could be used as the front page teasers to hook the new players we need in the Melee arena. And if they try to turn it all into a freeloader's Little Napoleon paradise like the old free HtH, Hitech can just let us loose in there in fighters for a month with the baby seals. Meh, just send Joachim in with a toothpick and some bubblegum..... :O
-
To whom it may concern: I have not been around for a few months but do agree that going onto Steam might help Aces High to draw more players and help the community grow. Wish you the best.

There are a few issues with Steam. One is privacy - you literally sign your rights to any information you give them away, meaning they can mine your computer system for info, as well as your account, sign up details, email etc and sell or supply them to third parties - they do have a disclosure agreement you can look up to see what you're agreeing to though. Another is the steam client hooks into your operating system to run anti-cheat / DRM stuff so the software is a lot more invasive then your regular amazon software store, its more similar to an antivirus program.
I run steam games but I have a modified DLL to do so because I don't like those sorts of programs on my computers. When I close my game I don't want it to continue running on my system or updating itself automatically when I login without asking my permission.
Lastly there is some controversy over the valve anti-cheat system. VAC is an automatic cheat detection system (see above). If you are banned by the automated system you can lose access to your steam games. The problem is Valve will not discuss the VAC ban with you and you are banned for 3 months, not only on your account but all accounts linked to your phone number - if your kid downloads a cheat from the internet and the VAC detects it, bye bye kids account, your account and all accounts connected to that phone number, and all the games you've purchased.
I say screw that, I don't use steam but if I did I'd be immediately banned most likely. Seems a bit over the top to me.
-
It's a good thing using steam won't be mandatory then isn't it?
Wiley.

Mining information is a problem.
Catching cheaters is not.

Whether or not to use VAC is up to HiTech if he wants to implement it in AH. Besides, as stated already by HiTech, you will not be required to use the Steam to play AH if you choose not to do so.
-
Is VAC only a local background filter processing the AH memory space or, can it follow connections to survey remote connections related to that memory space?
-

steam and vac are the least intrusive platforms ever....... steam never installs and 3rd party software, and the only way they collect information is by a survey about your hardware info which you can opt-in or opt-out by YOUR decision, just like in Aces High.
Vac does not do any connections to my knowledge.
Steam is the only platform which i would recommend to anyone for games.

Than just don't use steam Zygote. As far i''m aware you don't have to use steam. In fact they will probably encourage you to dont use steam so HT wont have to pay them the 30% fee.
But STEAM is GREAT for a new influx of player's. Period.
If your afraid that it will change the culture in AH than invite them to your squad when you notice a new player. Help them and teach them what AH is all about. We should do this as a community to keep AH alive for another 10 years full of joy. I really don't understand why ppl are against it. Just do this and the game will be as great as it was as 10 years ago when i first started playing and the whole Bish country was there for me and helped me to learn the game.

The best part about Steam is that it's just a modern platform for content delivery, akin to a virtual game CD. It's not required by any means. Some opt to have a physical CD of a game (even Aces High), some like to download straight from the developer's website, and some like to download from Steam. I enjoy Steam.

If AH is available in both versions then it's no problem for me. I'm pointing out the differences to online stores in response to posts that were saying Steam is just like an online store.
I don't think steam is really going to do much for Aces High in the long run. I think there are a few issues with AH that need to be addressed (maps, small plane set - there are a lot of planes but in practical terms for the MA there are only a few options (late war LA, Spit, 190 etc), the 3 way system leads to double teaming, no random allocation of new pilots other than to bish make bish over populated.
The other thing is not much has changed in AH, its almost identical to 17 years ago. Its a good game but gen Y requires constant content updates and crap and I doubt they'll like AH.

I think there is a random allocation, not sure on this. but upon creating a new account or changing names i recall being dropped into the rooks and knits.
I am probably from the generation that you refer to. I wouldn't know why a game like Warthunder would be more appealing than AH. The only problem that i have with AH that the graphichs are still less than WT and and its not obvious how to setup the game if you never done it before(controls ect). Maybe an temporary fix can be a glowing light around a player which they can activate with i need help button or something and that they will be redirected to a channel where they will be brought in contact with ppl that are willing to help the right away. ( i actually like helping ppl out with setting them up, but i don't ever notice them until i shoot them down or see country mates that are doing silly stuff.
A few weeks ago there was the combat challenge instead of FSO and that was a blast with air spawns everywhere. Constant action. Maybe we should have a permanent arena like that when there are more players around so the MA is not that empty.
Personally i love the 3 way system. It feels more dynamic to me.
Edit: poor english

It would be a real shame if the median age of the player base here dropped below 90.
That's it.... I'm investing in an alarm for my walker. We will have to stake down the outhouse.

We will harvest the Steam new players like we have always harvested newbies because of the learning curve. I'm not looking forward to them discovering ch200 and the happy time greeting crew there who will milk them for all the waaaaaaaaaaaaa they can get out of them.

So Hitech should not bother to try and attract new players?

In his own way, I think Bustr was suggesting that we try to be helpful to the noobs, instead of acting like a piranha school. I agree with him (if that was his intent).

Definitely going to be some good sticks coming out of other games and some here who think they are untouchable because they land a decent amount of kills are going to get a rude wake up. Anyone can fly easy mode in the herd, looking forward to seeing some more people who go head first into one.
-
Im very close to 60, and I look forward to an influx of new targets.
I only wish HTC could/would give us some updates as to what is going on with the Steam deal.
Fugitive... I'm 65 and very lousy at AH... if u want to shoot people down... I'll be

So I got two of my old buddies today to fly aces high.I flew other flights sims with them a few years ago like DCS and war thunder..one of them had flown aces high for 2 weeks back in AH2 around 2012 and once I told him that he could get another free trial because of AH3 he was so excited..and we had a blast today flying about 3 sorties great fights because in part I was there to guide him...we had so much fun and he was very excited to play and fly and even managed 2 kills in one sortie ...now my other friend had no idea what AH3 was (he flies many other sims) and his first question was "is it on steam"...I told him no and that it would be soon and it took about 10 mins to convince him to just download it from the website. On the contrary to what a lot of people here think, the new generation trusts steam many times more than the dated looking AH website...I said why do you want it on steam ..."who cares".(I use steam but idc if a game is or isn't on steam..if I want to play a game I play it regardless ) but his response was simply "I like having steam to message ppl and Bc it simplifies many things for and has all my games in one place."
Just thought I'd leave this encounter here <S>

-
Yep that's been my experience as well.
-
Yep. A lot of the times I hear people talking about games, Steam is mentioned. Usually it is either; "Does Steam have it?", or; "You can get it on Steam.".
We just have to wait and see if HiTech can pound out a deal he likes. From there, it's the nightmare coding session from hell to get AH and Steam to work together. I hope they update the Val and Kate before that happens. :)
-
I really hope this works out. This game really shines when it's played on a scale that no other game can really match. Being on Steam can do nothing but put more eyes on the game and genre as a whole. :aok

But you're hardly an authority on the subject! If I had to guess I'd say this game has been around longer than you have. Why do I think that? Because you claim some inability to pay for a subscription. Adult people with jobs have choices. Kids don't. There are any number of ways to pay for an AH subscription from anyplace around the world. You refuse to use any of them. That's your choice. Or maybe your parents' choice really.
Now if you're really NOT that guy, pony up the bucks like the rest of us and join in the WW2 sim you so desperately want to play and stop trolling this board!

nug is wrong.
It is a simple matter of the environment changing and HTC not rushing to catch up.
If HTC went steam during the high-time, (2008), the chances of 500+ players being still on would of been multiplied substantially.
There is as well the tablet and free to play market that haven't been entered at all and is where the majority of gamers went.
HTC does a good job of holding the line as a very small company, but that comes with inherent downsides as well.
Maybe HTC needs more effective tools to counteract the length of time it takes to make substantial updates.
Opinions?

Better late then never.
If AH goes to steam and has needed gameplay changes the numbers will easily go beyond 500.
People want good gameplay first, graphics are second - look at latest super mario trailer on nintendo switch

It has graphics from 15 years ago, but has good gameplay, that's what people want and it has 10 million views in 5 days.
Super mario is the ultimate fantasy platformer.
Aces High can be the ultimate ww2 flight combat game

That is a different game genre..it's a stylized game in which ppl could care less about graphics.think about it..creativity of the Mario series is the draw...now in air sims and air combat games like ours creatively is limited. Let's say a game that claimed to be an enthusiast car game/sim in 2017 had graphics from 2008.No one would even give it a chance let alone look at gameplay. The flight sim community is similar and really holds graphics close to heart..evident even since AH's early days when ppl would compare AH to Il2:FB graphics wise...Many flight sim guys can't get past the graphics Bc it is tied into the fidelity and feeling of the game and environment. Understandable but sad Because AH has gameplay no other flight sim/game can offer). Think about it..the feeling of flight in AH, perfectly fine for me ,however no clouds...2005 sounds..."on the rails"feeling of flight at times.I know I sound harsh but it's just to prove that in flight sims graphics matter, but your 100% correct..so does gameplay.
Now in the gameplay department I get the feeling hi tech moves at a snails pace and the game feels static compared to other flight games. Which receive constant updates.plus barely any communication with community is my personal gripe , although ppl have explained why it is the case.(ppl literally crucified the clouds progress ) this community is amazing at times and sometimes plain out of touch with the gaming times and age we live in.
I have not played as long as you vets to give any gameplay improvement suggestions but I've flown flight sims for about 8 years and the learning curve in this one is at the top...and I love that fact as it challenges me more than any other game I own .<S> however I feel as if mostly the fights are...extremely outnumbered by your enemy or extremely outnumbering and destroying your enemy .probably a result of low population numbers. This is not to say I dont have amazing fights day in and day out..just gotta find them and have fun at the end of the day . <S> This game is what you make it .

They would if it had gameplay that has never been done before, something totaly new for the first time.
like this

The same is with Mario, it does perfectly what no other games does, and even though it has old graphics it's a success.

since you didn't play this game back in it's hay day, you have no idea what it was like back then.
what happened is real life happened, other gaming avenues opened up, people having a hard time having to quit playing to save every pennie that they can. i know 2 people this happened, me for 1, i became homeless, lived in my truck for 3 months, fortune's changed still took 4 to 5 months to get back in. similar thing happened to my friend in dallas.
AND AGAIN YOUR IDEAS WILL HURT THE GAME, QUIT PUSHING YOUR AGENDA

the future must be a dark and scary place for people to react so strongly about any mention of change, its HTC's game an no amount of berating someone offering suggestions is going to change the fact that HTC will change or not until he's ready. No amount of so called experts opinions from years of playing this game are going to change it either.

-
I know I have read them, but to be honest I'm torn because I played games that span the old and the new (not as much as I used to these days) and lets face it times have changed out there and Aces really from a modern strategic game play point of view has been practically static for a long time.
I played AW until the last day, saw the player base shrink EA came in and the game disappeared. I would really hate to see that happen here (I still pay my sub to AH even though I dont get to play much here either)
Some of Nugs suggestions arnt really that far off compared to today's games

An idea: Why not trying to get one of those hot shot WT youtubers to fly in the BoB scenario? Could be a good way to attract new players..

QUIT PUSHING YOUR AGENDA
Lol my agenda is only to have HTC have more players and even better game, and for players to have a more fun game to play, because if the game is more fun to play with gameplay that can hook players for a longer period of time, more players will in the end stay for longer which is better for HTC, and a WW2 multiplayer flight experience is a dream for flight lovers which no game currently provides, and where Aces High is the closest one to offer something like it.
The groundwork in Aces High is set for this, it's only needs that extra touch of HTC to transform it into WW2.
Lunatic, you and everyone else here, play for that WW2 experience, whether you are aware of it or not, that's why you are here in the first place playing Aces High, because it's the only flight sim that offers such a big multiplayer flight game with ww2 planes and tanks, so why not just go full ww2.
It's a win-win for everyone.
-

Unfortunately, your ideas haven't been good ones. All they have been have been rehashed features over the years that have been tried without success in other games. Why do you think your same ideas will work this time?
-
nugetx:
One issue instantly arises when trying to simulate war. And hence what works in dream game does not work when actually played.
That issue is:
Games are meant to be fun and fair but fighting a war is neither.
HiTech
-
"Games are meant to be fun and fair but fighting a war is neither"
HiTech
Had to chime in on this one... possible historic tagline :rock
X :salute
-
Games are meant to be fun and fair but fighting a war is neither.
HiTech
Truer words have never been spoken, Sir! However, we - the players, like little kids that play with wooden sticks in the backyard imitating soldiers, want to play a WWII version of AH!
Make our dream come true, Sir! :salute I'm positive you would make it work.
The community will surely acknowledge this by player numbers from 10 years ago or higher, and with being on Steam, the game will be prosperous for the next 15 years.
Why do you think your same ideas will work this time?
Do not think of those as 'my ideas' think of them as of ideas by 'every player who wants a ww2 flight game'.
I loved a game in the 90s called 'cannon fodder' the tagline for the game was 'war was never so much fun'. You would control a squad of little soldiers and progress with them through levels.
Now imagine if Aces High could be honoring the history by having a WW2 version of it, what a marketing tagline!
Aces High - the ultimate history world war 2 flight/combat game.
-
I like the game the way it is. I was hooked the first time I played it. Didn't need a two-week trial even. I'm sure there are a lot of other folks out there just like me. You want a game the way you want to play it, nugetx, I suggest you go code one. Because your ideas are not flying here.
:salute
-
You say I want the game to play it 'my way', but imagine, there are thousands of other nugetx's , waiting for this type of game.
Besides, the game would be exactly the same, just with more things to do, in a semi historic setting, can you see it?
Just imagine that you are playing Aces High and you are over France and below you are hundreds of infantry fighting, and you can dive in to strafe them to single handedly have effect on the war, and then are the trains, the trucks, the tents, the ammo depots etc.
Having this PvE content, makes you even want to play the game if arena would be empty, because you alone can have fun, just like in a single player game, and if this would make people want to play, it means the arena would be never empty and there would be plenty of players all the time, because everyone would flock to AH as 'THE' 'ww2 flight game' to be.
-

Could go on..these are just a few of the things that make me come back for more and more and more...
Rinse and repeat..
Best game ever ..and as you Merkins say...PERIOD.

The bashing of rookies in game is an issue, the old timers are so paranoid so in their mind there can be no new players, only shades and spies..

If the steam thing happens, the "in-game sale" to new players will be much easier than it was when I came on board. I had to be convinced that it was worth spending 15 bucks a month, and the game and the players in it had 15 days to make that happen. Now, someone just has to convince a newcomer to dedicate some of their gaming time to AH.
If a player had not befriended me and showed me how to do some stuff to get started, I would never have stayed the course.
I hope there are enough people like that, who will welcome new members and get them engaged, that the community continues to grow in a way we all want. The only thing we would be fighting at that point is a learning curve. But this game has so many cool steps along the way, and small successes and achievements, that it should be able to keep the attention of even the most ADHD-afflicted of today's gamers...
-
If a player had not befriended me and showed me how to do some stuff to get started, I would never have stayed the course.
This is why (and I've been harping on this for 15 yrs) a new player should have access to enough basic online interactive tutorial info to get them out of a FH or VH in a plane/vehicle, working knowledge of the text bar, and where to go for more help.

The calls and emails I get with the phrase, "I am not posting on that board so they can brow beat me" is quite frustrating.
Do any of you see us at HTC verbally beating up people for posting ideas?

Is that a free game? I can see where there would be less concern about community interaction with a free game. Who cares if someone stops playing a free game?

At least a portion of their revenue is generated by the players in the form of micro-transactions - in game purchases of new vehicles or aircraft, decorations for vehicles, experience points for existing crews, adding new crews, etc. Not sure if they have other revenue streams.

Steam is great, I can't imagine why the hesitation to use it.
I added Aces High to my steam library ages ago so my friends see anytime I fire it up.
And even if they did put Aces High on steam you can still run it the way you do now, it would not change the way you login or pay. I've seen some people complain about having a Steam forum, none of the games I've played on Steam have used the Steam forum, every game has its own website and forum that continues to be the place to be. All the games that I've owned that went to steam just end up giving you a steam key if you choose to install the game through steam.

Hiya Skuzzy... yes Wot can be a free game but if one wants to get
into higher and better tanks, You will have to have alot of patience and alot
of playing time :bhead

Sort of apropos to this discussion about Steam (although it might also fit in the VR forum).
Here is a site that displays LIVE player counts in Steam-related games. (http://vrlfg.net/)
I bring it up because these types of sites, by linking to Steam's API, may also help bring in players, in that they list the games with most players in live numbers.
FWIW,
-
uh that website is missing about 99% of the games, and players actually using Steam right now... if you really want to know how many people are playing a particular game, go to its community hub on Steam and it'll say on the top.
-
WOT is like the new breed of game that says it is free but you play folks who pay to be better. If you want to compete then you must pay too. People with gambling addictions have the worst problems with this type game. It feeds on their weakness.
About 2 months back there was a story out about folks losing their home and more because of the tens of thousands of dollars spent.

Indeed, these new payment systems are made to be more addictive then previous, its what competition has conjured.

That's true, Krupinksi, but it's probably because that particular site is geared only to games that support VR, so it's possibly filtering out everything else on Steam. I just happened land on that one and the secondary aspect that it could possibly direct interest of Steam users to AH occurred to me, so I shared it here. Since AH is a game that supports VR, that site would probably pick it up too.

It does not show Elite:Dangerous, one of the penultimate VR games. (Currently 5.5k in play via steam)

Interesting. For me, it does show Elite Dangerous, with 5045 players online as I write this.
Oh well, take it for whatever it's worth to you.

I found the problem, I had to check "show no-VR supported games", which was off by default. :old:

Seems a bit over the top to me.
very few games are supported by VAC, most are source engine powered.
I play CSGO where cheating is rempant, and these rules are not enough to deter the cheating and many want more intrusive software.
Note that modifying a steam dll is not legit and could get you a VAC ban.
Also accounts are personnal and not to be shared. You can setup a steam 'family' so other members of your family can play your games when you are not, as long as these games don't have a third-party login (lile aces high has)

AFAIK there is now nothing you can buy with real money in WoT that you cannot buy with credits, including their "premium ammunition". People pay to grind faster.

I've made my Tier X tank in WoT without in game purchases. I have bought tanks with gold I've earned in game, but the grind was real and not impossible.
IMHO Tier V-VIII are the most fun anyways -- Tier I battles are great too.

I have tried WOT, but hate trying to use mouse and keyboard controls.

pondering the move to steam and the lower numbers in the community and ways to get both AH and the community back to it heyday with 600+ up at any given time.
has there been any thought of a 30 day trial if/when we go to steam? this would help fuel the addiction to AH as if a new player stays at it for a month things may start to click for them with game play as well as getting know some of the Sr. Members of the community to understand what AH is all about.
also........
I do not see where a increased charge would be needed as HT can make up any charges by steam just with increased numbers subscribed through steam. and the old community can continue to pay as they do now without any hit by steam as we would be considered the core community and HT could protect our accounts as the test team or something of that nature?
I do think that Steam would be the best hope of increasing the exposure to Aces High 3 and it could be great for everyone with continued new development and growth of our little slice of the cyber gaming world.
HT could also make a couple old farts arenas and only let logins active before the steam live date in to them... this way things stay the same for you if that's what you choose.... bet ya venture out to the steam world after you hear about cool things going on and great game play?
BTW any of you notice there are hardly any Squadron pages anymore? wonder why??????? checking out active squadron pages use to be one of my favorite surfing activities.

you do need to be on steam to play AH3- you would still log on the game pay for the game the same why you do now.

well we may not be going to Steam, been almost 3 months maybe more, since HiTech said since april he had been considering steam, now no word from HiTech no nothing.

They are a tiny team, probably takes them several months to make the game changes to mesh with the steam client. Hopefully we get a couple thousand players online at once when it hits steam.

At that time I really hope our community rolls up their collective sleeves and ATTEMPTS to help integrate new players. It's not JUST HTC and crew that can "make or break" the game. It's the ya-hoo's playing in his sandbox that will determine if a steam player sticks around or not.
Make Pickupmissions, (make channel 200 OFF for new players ), offer help, be the player you wished you had found when YOU started this game.

The existing community can help integrate new players if they join gradually, but I'd guess that if a couple of thousand new players show up all at once, THEY will determine the game culture.

That seems logical.

Its a shame there isnt a detailed training mechanism. It seems to be on the players to identify a struggling new player and show them the ropes, there is very little guidance in how to play the game if you don't already know how everything works.
-
anyone remember the days of telling a noob that a;t>f4 was the way to bail out?

It would be neat if there was a quick runthrough with things such as Take-off, Raising/Lowering Gear, Use of Control Surface (ailerons, elevators, rudders, flaps), throttle & manifold pressure control, autopilot and autoclimb, and maybe basic gunnery against a drone, and then landing.
Possibly do an "Advanced" training walkthrough as well that starts with an airspawn and a steep dive angle to teach people things like trim up, flat spin recovery, carrier landing (putting your hook down), rearming, and more advanced gunnery with lead shots.
Have a Basic and Advanced Bombing walkthrough showing people how to use their bomb site in the auto and manual settings. Level and Dive bombing, setting your salvo and delay times, and rear gunnery.
Then a vehicle walkthrough that I think could be basic/advanced in one because I honestly don't find vehicles that crazy. ASDW, Left Click, Right click and 1,2,3,4... that's just about it.
But I think these things could be automated using the existing offline/co-op mission system, make it voluntary, but also add Achievements for completing them because both new and old will probably be more likely to do it if it helps them get a star. And it will avoid having to rely upon random players to teach.
At the end, maybe have a link to the AH Training Forum to ask for additional help if needed.

One thing I seem to have a problem with when I download the new game is, The elevator and aileron are backwards in default.
Anyone else notice this?
Maybe there should even be a tutorial on how to map your stick first.
It can be very challenging for new players to even get off the ground.
-
I ran a new install and didn't have that issue. The only time it happened to me was right after the B29 came out. That patch remapped my stick somehow, so I went to fly the new bomber and crashed 4 or 5 sets on the runway before realizing what the issue was... Shoulda gone offline first. :headscratch:

Yeah, I mean at least the last 5 times ive reinstalled the game, it was been backwards. Not sure if it has been looked at, but I recently re-downloaded the game last month and the axis were backwards.

That would be an interesting development. Probably would result in some pretty epic meltdowns too. It's a problem I hope we get. 2000 new people on at once would make for an interesting arena.

To be fair most steam gamers have decent setups, quite different to the "why won't my 386 run AH 3 I have a 3DFX card!" crowd we usually see here.

since I don't do anything special with the elevators or ailerons it doesn't matter to me if they are backwards, in others I don't use them. I just fly the plane. wouldn't know when or where to use them anyway.
but if your having a problem with this report it in bug reports

I assume you mean you have to invert the axis in settings to make it work properly?
Check your Windows Game Controller properties for the joystick. AH should see the same axis assignment that Windows sees.

I made AHIII work in steam for the overlay, ease of access, etc... I'm happy about this... I often just open steam to make sure games are updated-then I can just start them up when I'm ready to game later.

This is my 3rd time back to this game (efish and fishe were my other accounts as far as I recall). Each time I played it was for between 6 months and a year. Once in 2008 and again in 2012 if memory serves. I left the first time to focus on school and second time because the community has fizzled. I'm back again and to my delight everyone on the Knights have been very forthcoming and excited to explain the (many) parts of the game I failed to grasp. Shoutout to Flk2, JVLees, and a few others (I forgot all of your names, sorry!) who have been helping by me out.
The biggest drawback to this incredible game is the inexplicable lack of exposure. This game could be making exponentially more money monthly with proper media exposure. Maybe that's not what the devs want. Maybe they want to keep the game for the old breed. On an intellectual level I have tremendous respect if that's the case.
My only comment is that it's a crying shame that this isn't the number 1 PC flight sim in the world for player count. With proper exposure, it could be. It should be. I am pro-steam. Constant exposure to 10 million players, no brainer to get those numbers to new record heights. I understand there's issues with privacy, cheaters, implementation and hit and quit noobs. If hitech wants to protect our information then huge props and let that be the end of the discussion. Please Hitech, give us an update on your thoughts! Ultimately, we all support the great endeavor that is Aces High. Those commenting here only feel desire for the game to succeed even more than it already has(for the most part). I fear that there are many like me who support the game until they get discouraged of the lack of a player count. This game is quality and Hitechs only problem should be having a great accountant to count all that money he and his team richly deserve.
-
And I just saw that I am a failure at researching as Hitech posted about a (hopefully minor) steam setback today. Keep us in the loop!
