and if not now, who plans to use it in the next 12 months?
For those using it, what are the pros and cons?
-
I tried it for a while. It is ok but not great.
Pro:
Cons:
- Resolution / clarity is poor.
- Seeing to the rear is difficult unless you use hat switch to look around.
People will give you advise about using a swivel chair to help looking back. I have a swivel chair and sure, I can swivel and look back but it is not workable if you also want to use your pedals etc.
-
quite a few since the good old days of just me :)
You lose screen resolution, but you gain an immense amount of immersion in the game. Stereoscopic 3D gives you better depth perception, and the head tracking means you can really take advantage of the views. As you play in VR you start get the feel for difference in aircraft sizes and in particular the views you can get.
Going back to non-VR after playing VR for years is very very difficult.
People who get motion sickness shouldn't try VR.
-
I go between TrackIR and no trackIR. I would love to try the VR stuff, but with the state of the game these days I cant justify blowing that kind of money. I wish the game was going strong with a few hundred players on line every night. Id jump right on over. Seeing as this is the only game I play, Im not going to waste the money....... yet :)
-
I use the Oculus Rift and absolutely love it. The immersion is awesome. The graphics and some aspects of SA suffer, while others improve. I hardly notice canopy obstructions in the rift; it is so easy to see around them. I think it has helped my gunnery, and it is easier to see what your opponent is doing in a dogfight.....unless you lose sight of him, then I find it is harder to see bandits from some angles. Bottom line: I'd have a hard time not flying with VR now! :aok
-
I love VR for flying and use a hat switch to overcome the rear view issue. Track IR for GVing to take advantage of better visual acuity amongst the bushes and trees.
-
I do. Don't think I could play without it now
-
I would like to try VR but don't have the money.
-
I have a Acer headset - picked it up for a couple hundred (actually picked up 2) and what you loose in visual quality you get from a monitor view, you gain 10-fold in situational awareness and immersion. It’s addictive actually - I can’t fly Aces High without it anymore.
It’s the difference of riding a 100cc moped in the burbs in the rain vs a 1600cc Harley Fatboy in a May farm road in Kentucky on a warm sunny day.
I’ve had the Oculus Rift too, liked the Acer more - better video quality.
-
I use it some times in AH....
But 100% of the time in IRACING. AH isn't just isn't to that level of playability at this time time. The map looks jacked up and hard to use, the texted box is in the way or you move it out of the way and it feels odd to look at. AH is still better with triple monitors.

Occulus Rift, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! As mentioned the Resolution suffers, but I hardly notice it anymore. Gving though...different story. Like Puma stated...TIR for this..well anything other than M3,Wirb and NON Armored Combat.Armored best to use TIR. I bought the ACER Headset, same as MR FORK has..didnt like it as much as Rift. Could let you have it on the CHEAP, BBQsam! I really just didnt like the Windows Mixed Reality and through STEAM deal. Just holler if you are interested...goes for anybody it still in box, been used 15 minutes(Aprox)
-
I don't use vr goggles and don't plan to.
They should have added or updated more planes instead of a vr pilot I'll fly with once and then turn off.
-
Tried TrackIR for a while, then gave up. I have a much better sense of the aircraft attitude from the fixed head positions of the hat switch views.
-
I'm with TIR and improving my controllers. Added Crosswinds pedals and a VKB stick the last couple of years, eventually <sic> they'll come out with a throttle and after that I'll maybe set my sights on VR. TIR works for me. I have the video card to run VR but I'm waiting on them to get a couple of steps further into development. Better resolution, lighter weight, reliable sound. Like that.
The only other thing that bugs me about VR is that it hasn't been around long enough for any data regarding any associated potential eyesight problems. Maybe I'm overthinking it, and I know the whole thing is an optical illusion, but I worry about how focusing my eyes on a screen physically a couple of inches from my actual eyeballs for hours on end will affect my already terrible eyesight over time! I wear glasses at night when I'm flying so if using a rift there's another expense associated with that just for the lenses.

VR-Occulus......great immersion........lousy resolution along with an awkward interface that for me ruins what could be amazing.......expensive and now sitting in the closet gathering dust........ :old:
-
I use an HD monitor with 1080 x 1920 resolution and the image quality with VR Just totally sucks....I mean all the eye candy they put in the game looks terrible with a VR Headset. Maybe this works for the guys flying but I can tell you the sight picture in a tank is not good at all.........but then again they don't care about what the GV game is like.
-
..... awkward interface that for me ruins what could be amazing.......:
curious, how awkward? I basically just go straight into AH, put on my headset, and play the game (although mostly flying for me).
-
been using it for over a year now. It's amazing. Different game overall.
Use hatswitch to overcome 6 view issue.
-
TrackIR here, you get situation awareness, no motion sickness, and a 2k resolution on a 32" screen.
-
I will try VR once it works and looks good. No need to downgrade to VR.

This was very similar to my position, until an Oculus Rift showed up at my door, courtesy of one of my sons. Now there's no going back for me, and notwithstanding certain compromises, overall I consider it an upgrade from TrackIR and my 32" 1440p monitor.

For those concerned about glasses and lens inserts...
I don't know about the Oculus, but the Vive was designed to accommodate glasses. The side cushions have a slot to allow room for the stems, and the lens system can be adjusted back a tad to allow room for the lenses. I wear my computer glasses with no real problems.
Also, to the earlier poster worried about eye strain focusing at something inches from the eye, the lens system alters the perceived focal distance. For the Vive, the eye sees the screen at 75 cm away. That's why I use the glasses I use when regularly sitting at the computer. Although I love the VR so much, I'm thinking about getting some gaming contacts. :rofl
-
For those concerned about glasses and lens inserts........
I was concerned about this since I regularly use reading glasses when using a monitor. But as Ciaphas and others have pointed out, something about how at least the Rift works I find I don't need glasses at all when I'm using the Rift.

Not me.

Has anyone tried the samsung odyssey vr. Wondering which one is best for ah.8

Keyboard views here...
17 years old habbits die hard.
I wish I could justify buying VR set.

@MAX - it's up to you to decide on whether or not you think VR is worth the investment. For Windows Mixed Reality headsets, they're a couple hundred dollars, and run on nVidia 1050's and up (or a 970) and 470/570 radeon. Vive and Rift's are waaay more expensive.
Personally, went from the Rift to WMR (Acer). It's not perfect as the main dev tech platform is just two years old.
-
I bought one from a sight MRFORK gave me...liked Rift better. I can get it to you CHEAP if you wish to try it out...just PM me :rock
-
Oculus Rift here - absolutely love it and enjoy just flying around even without anyone to fight - just because it looks so real and cool.
Yes, resolution could be better - and it´s hard to see which way the tank gun is facing when attacking for a strafing run - but that will only get better in future iterations. The increased SA, immersion, and 3D spatial awareness (especially for high-deflection shooting) more than makes up for that.
If you are a naysayer - you are probably too old to appreciate/adopt to something new or too poor to buy one or just generally weird. :devil
Cheers, Litjan

:rofl I thought he NAILED IT. We all fall into one of those "categories"....in fact some of us probably fit into 2 or more categories....I AM NOT WEIRD :neener:

No and and i don't plan on it :joystick:

I use Rift and LOVE IT!. The only downside is I cant fly bombers with it or GV very well. But this is me... I just enjoy being in a fighter so much that I dont spend time on other aspects of the game.

Get voice attack for the bombers. They have free and pay ware. Set it up with sal is and gun pos and bomb every thing in sight. You can even do calibration by voice.

Went from TrackIR to VR with a Rift. I don't think I could ever play the game without VR now. Yes, you loose a little graphic clarity, but what you gain in SA and immersion is worth it.
Not sure why people say they can't look behind with VR. I don't have any problems. You simply have to twist your neck like a real pilot is all.. which just adds to the immersion.

I am holding out for a Hollow shed that doesn't malfunction and everything becomes real.

If you already have a system capable of running VR and have the money to blow, go ahead and get VR. I have the Oculus Rift. My brother had both a Rift and a Vive, so I got to try both and decided the Rift was better for flight sims. BUT, as many have said before, the resolution is horrible compared to any flat screen display with 1024x768 or better. Because the resolution is spread over such a wide field of view, it is effectively somewhere between 640x480 and 800x600 with a flat panel in terms of being able to read gauges and see/identify distant contacts.
Aces High has one of the best VR implementations out of all the available flight sims, though DCS World and IL-2:BoX have very good implementations as well. If you are primarily flying air-to-air in Aces High, it is a great experience, except that you have to get really close to see the enemy aircraft's shape and attitude really well.
After flying VR, I am faced with a dilemma: the immersion of VR or the graphics quality of TrackIR/2d-monitor. No matter which way I play, I miss the features of the other. So I am roughly flying about 50% each way, though in Aces High I tend to fly 100% VR as the cockpits don't have digital displays with text that need to be read and the default icons overcome spotting/id problems even if they don't help with the exact attitude.
If you are on a budget and/or have a weaker PC, I wouldn't waste the money trying to upgrade enough to play VR, yet.
-
:aok Well put! About like my situation...DCS- TIR, Aces High- ALL VR. AH BY FAR is the best at utilizing VR...being still able to use a "Hat Switch" to cheat on views...IF you need it! :rock

I have had prcisley the same dilemma regarding switching to VR from lcd/track ir. Great post.

I'm very curious about trying VR but wonder how it runs on a mid-range PC. Mine can run the current AH on max settings at constant ~60fps. I have an AMD 8300 3.3 8-core, NVIDIA 1050 2gb VRAM and 16gb of memory.
I believe it meets the "requirements" for Oculus Rift but I heard that you need something better than recommended for it to work well.
Any experience running it on a system of these specs? I'd hate to spend the money then find out I need to upgrade my PC.

I can't comment on your particular configuration, but you might try this free program to survey you hardware.
