What would it take to get you back in the game. (I mean the ones that post here but don't play)
-
Caveat: I like fighter on fighter game play. I also understand that others may choose to play a different way.
- Increased fight density. Too long between fights was a major factor in me not playing
- More fighting less running
- Increased visibility of GVs (esp wirbs) so that I can avoid them when chasing down runners.
There have been many posts about how these might be achieved. They have usually attracted various degrees of derision from others and slowly but surely those that thought the same as I do left the game.
-
Use only small maps Euro TZ, that will give more opportunities for fights.
Remove the instant radar, and give it a long enough delay so you cannot trust the radar for outmaneuvering an enemy, lose sight should be = lose fight.
To mitigate Fess run-away and fight instead to an extent, give planes that have extensive run-away capabilities a lower ENY / perk factor to make them less common.
I want the scenario/squad base attack/defense and the bombers are included in it (less the Tiger armor based B-26), without only instant Wirbie battalion defending it alone.
A way to do that could be to have reserve field clusters, owned by the main field owner.
Fix the Yak-3 max dive-speed, let it shred it's parts above 400mph in a pullout (like in a competitor sim, and closer to French manual numbers), and remove the ridiculous armor it currently have.

What would it take to get you back in the game. (I mean the ones that post here but don't play)
- Triple population (yesterday in my timezone's primetime there were 55 players on)
- Get rid of the magic tail warning radar
- Eliminate GV sector dar
- Buy me a new trackir :devil
Nothing of that will happen, so I will just keep doing my AH stats stuff :)
-
I've been playing in the MA a bit more recently, it has been fun. Can't help but reminisce about the old days when I'd spend every free minute I had flying.
The large maps often spread out fights which is a shame, and sadly the small maps with close bases usually get reset in a matter of hours.
I'm on the fence about the GV dar and range dar. It has both helped and hurt me, so that is a wash.
-
Same as the other Euro players really, not enough players on during my prime time to make it worth logging on. I am only interested in aerial combat and amongst those few players from my timezone that are online a large fraction will be GVers or player combat avoiders. I'd come back if AI planes were introduced into the MA, even if these were just bombers. Shooting down AI planes would at least be something to do while waiting for a human to fight and might act as a seed to get a fight going and more players logging in.

As with most other people these few weeks, corona lack of work (and now finally as i am fired lack of job...) got me back into the game.
For new players, none of the details we older ah folk notice are a dealbreaker. For most new guys as far as I've seen is the 15 buck a month model of payment. They would stick around if the system is different. In what way - I have no idea, I'm terrible with money and money systems (which will surely come in handy now that im jobless and no with no 6 month prospects due to corona)

I am flying some.... have never left. Was away over a year because of hurricane Harvey.
For 20 years played nothing but Ah.... for the first time playing RDR2. Kind of been busy in there.
Was spreading 38 parts in MNM though. WOOOOT

1.) Historically realistic setups, only one nation per "country" (i.e. early, mid, late war - Knights = Axis, Bishop = Allies,...)
2.) Gameplay that forces goal-driven gameplay (i.e. channel player action towards certain goals that avoid the rampant furball for the furballs sake style)
3.) Update some of the horrible graphics (tracers, hit sprites, explosions...)
4.) Beef up action by adding smart AI aircraft that will do bombing runs, fighter cover etc.
In other words - look at War Thunders simulator mode for aircraft, called "Enduring confrontation". You can see all of my above suggestions beautifully implemented.
I know this will never happen here with all the "missunz" haters and "I wanna fly 2 seconds and then furball with planes that canīt run away from my Spit9"...but hey, you asked.

People playing choose how to play. AVA has 2 sides and no one goes there. The main arena has a little of everything. It is your choice where you want to be in that equation. If you want to force others into yours.... think about you being forced into thiers.

Some already have some sort of dot dar capability. Interesting when sitting in a corner or other random spot in a given gv dar square, air cons fly directly overhead and start bombing. No search involved, just direct to.

I have to keep my game play to a minimum. Otherwise, I'll keep hoarding the Tour #1 rankings and make other players quit. :devil

In essence the game is still one of the best out there so we remain connected in the hope that at some point it becomes attractive enough to fly again. Of course that will be different for each individual and there is no magic bullet.

The answer to that question is very simple. Aces high is always been two parts a game and a social gathering.
almost all players will eventually be bored with the game but they have made many friends who they wish to stay in contact with.
The social part of the game I learned early on when designing warbirds.I had thought at the time that I thought I made a much better game than air warrior of course people would come over.but the designer the game wasn't the issue once people have made friends in a gaming community no matter how good another game is they don't want to leave their friends.

Absolutely true. And perhaps the most important aspect of this game, far more than whether DAR bar is on or off, side switch times are too long/short, or all the other criticisms. With very rare exception, we're all friends - even though generally we've never met, and probably never will.

I have played on and off for years dating back to somewhere around late 2000/early 2001. I have always liked the physics of the game. The VR experience is top notch. I have no interest in flying with a squad. I did briefly join a squad for the first time ever last year. I confirmed it is not my thing. I prefer flying early war aircraft, especially the P-40C and small, hard fought dogfights where the combination of pilot skills/aircraft performance are balanced enough to make it fun even if I lose most of the time. But the MA rarely generates the conditions I enjoy, therefore I don't have much fun when flying in the MA. So, even though I have been subscribed for months, I rarely log on to the game. When the arenas were packed to the max with 400+ people and the strategy was much simpler, I had a little more fun, but there really isn't anything you can do to make it "better" that would magically bring me back to the main arena. I will say that I was very interested in the tour of duty concept and was very disappointed when it came to nothing after years of waiting. I would probably love the historical scenarios, but after all these years, I have never signed up for one. One thing I always looked forward to was updates. At one time, there was a meaningful update to the game every few weeks or so. Now, just minor patches. No new aircraft, no new features, no upgrades of existing aircraft. The static nature of the webpage reflects that, too. It used to be updated as frequently as the news section of the forums.
I fly almost every night with DCS World, though sometimes I fly Aerofly FS2 for its awesome VR experience, P3D, X-Plane, IL-2 Battle Over X series, and the Third Wire Strike Fighters series. It is just a matter of what type of flying I feel like doing, what type of airplane I would like to fly, and where I would like to fly it. But I have a lot more fun doing exactly what I want to do with the hour or two I have to fly. Whereas in the main arena, I am waiting for my P-40C to get to a decent altitude, transit to the airfield where the action is, and then get shot down almost instantly as I enter a furball of high, fast late war monsters, then repeating this process until I catch the right moment where the balance in numbers and aircraft types lets me actually maneuver and shoot... unless its over an enemy airfield and I get hit by flak, then its back to the runway to start the next climb/transit all over again. My experience could be much better if I flew with a squad for mutual support and training and flew a more competitive aircraft. But for me, that is even less fun than getting shot down instantly by a rear quarter bnz for not paying attention during a boring transit.
As for the forums, I generally check the forums daily. The forums are filled with people who love military aviation and air to air combat in particular. In case you haven't noticed, such people are a small minority, so I still enjoy the online community even if I don't play the game. After browsing these forums for so many years, I have watched some of my favorite posters fade away to posting little or nothing. Some just got bored, some retired, and sadly some died. Fortunately, there are still some around that post a lot of what I enjoy reading. But like the game, even the forums have slowed down over the years. There used to be tons of posts in the aircraft and vehicles section: new information on existing aircraft, suggestions for new aircraft, history, etc. Now sometimes that forum is lucky if it gets one new topic per day. The hardware forum has always been a great place to keep up with current PC flight sim tech and at least that one is still fairly active, but still slower than it once was. As the forums slowed down, my frequency of browsing them has to. Sometimes I have gone weeks or even months without following them.

I am almost exclusively FSO now. I stay just for those guys. The MA has become a s%^&show. Toxic people (mostly one squad which I feel are a bunch of jackwagons), type specific DAR, gv DAR (dumbest add on ever), visibility range (I can see a LA7 taking off from 20k but can't see a Tiger tank at 500 feet.....guess which one is bigger), runners (no one fights 1 v 1 anymore, has to be 4 v 1 or they all run)

I mean, technically the La 7 is bigger. :)

I'm pleased and fortunate to say that a few years ago I did meet my long suffering wingman.
Most issues are player induced, but alter your mindset and everything is gravy. :D
-
almost all players will eventually be bored with the game
I hope to never be one of those people.
Having said that, I do remember back in Warbirds when I was flying with the American Eagles. I truly enjoyed the team I was flying with, and looked forward to meeting them online. I did have to leave Warbirds due to family issues, and am very happy to have found Aces High a few years later.
I really enjoy flying with (most) of the people here in Aces High, but I never found a squad that quite right for me. Nothing wrong with the squads, just not a good fit for me personally. But I still enjoy flying with my fellow pilots.

Donīt want to force anyone to do anything. The main arena is like you said - thats why I donīt enjoy it and cancelled my subscription.
AVA is empty --- because it is empty. If it wasnīt empty and boring I would definitely fly there and pay 50$/month without cringing.
The OP was asking what it would take to get us "Forum fliers" (= people that obviously loved this game very much once, but donīt play it anymore) to play again.
The dwindling numbers seem to be a widespread concern for many, not so for a few who just brush it off and want everything to stay the way it is. To those I say: Enjoy your Main Arena!
Cheers, Jan
-
Obviously you are not flying and have no idea what the numbers are doing. They have been climbing slowly. Many know this but there are those no longer in game who have no idea.
Enjoy visiting the boards of the game and community we support.

I reupped my subscription yesterday and I am already contemplating terminating it again. Honestly there just aren't enough players to have what I consider good battles (everyone's opinion of "good battles" is different.) On Friday night I joined the bomber mission that was put on and that was pretty fun but there was quite a lack of enemy engagement. Today I logged on to see the Bish with 40 player to the knit and rook 21 and 19 respectively. The Bish simply out number the other two teams and start efficiently steam rolling bases. There is no way to defend them when they are all working together and the other two teams are spread thin. I spent some time defending and logged off. I even got called a feminine hygiene product by someone I've never heard of nor remember their name because I had the audacity to fly a Fi-56 and spot/mark incoming GVs for the one or two people that actually were trying to defend a port at the time. It's pretty crazy that I find more maturity playing fortnite with my 10 and 7 year olds than I find in this game of "adults." I'll see how the next few days go but I'm not that optimistic to be honest.

Welcome back, SilverZ06, sorry you had that experience.
Yeah, the hording happens with all sides when/if they get enough numbers. I experienced it the other night, well, two days in a row, and while the perk planes are cheap, other than that it gets real old, real fast.
Anytime someone starts name calling like you describe, hit ". report" and that will give HiTech a heads up. He does care about behavior in the arenas, we don't always see what he does in his role. Had a run in with someone a couple months back, sent an email to HTC, talked with Dale on the phone, haven't seen that person in the arenas since then.
It's nice to see familiar names giving the game another go, even if only for a short while. I hope that you won't consider your experience the other night to be the norm. There are really fun nights (speaking for myself only) and other nights I spend maybe half an hour in the MA and find it to be not what I want to deal with at that time, and I log off and find something else to do. Give it a chance, please, a week or two at least, before you pull the plug on the game.
For myself, I refuse to fly WITH or AGAINST a horde. Just doesn't appeal to me. Don't know if that sentiment was what you were alluding to, but if so, I agree.
To the other forum flyers, while it would be great to see old faces back in the game, if it doesn't appeal to you, that is okay, too. Talked with Dale on the phone last week about pulling the plug myself, as 19 years in a game is a LONG time, and after a while, almost any game loses it's appeal. A lot of things that I see in game that bother me NOW, didn't bother me in the least back in 2000, or even 2004............but now, I find them irritating and make me look for entertainment elsewhere. Funny how that works..........fun when you are younger, not at all fun when you put on a few years............

I rarely get bored with it either, been playing on and off since AOL Air Warrior days. But I am a WW2 aviation addict and have a lot of other things going on to occupy my time and even though I only fly fighters in game, I rarely have big enough chunks of time to play enough to get bored with Aces High.

Agreed. I have been playing for 20 years. This is the only game I play and Im still into this game. The only problem I have is the way the game is played these days. Far too many players avoid a fight. Sad as planes are unlimited with the $15 subscription.

A sign of the times I am afraid. I have been putting my money into World of Warships and there is a healthy contingent in there that are scared to get the paint scraped. It confuses and frustrates me and I would love to blame the young kids for growing up being told that everyone is a winner but AH is not filled with young people it is filled with old farts so why they worry so much about losing a fight is beyond me.

Exactly. They all just want to hide in video games nowadays. In Aces High you cannot hide.

What HiTech stated about friends made during participation and competition, friendly competition is a factor for many of us. Some of us came from AW and Gamestorm. A lot of us did meet in person.
Some of us attended Air Warrior conventions hosted by members of the Community. We met in person at these conventions. Indy at 2K was a fun one. Jordi organized it and did a great job. A lot of friends from Air warrior I miss a great deal.
Some of them have passed such as Whels/Wheels in AW real name Mike Koon. 1colo, Rick Sype, my wingman for a lot of years in AW who also passed. I see a lot of old AW participants in Aces High that I got to know very well from flying with them in AW many years ago. TC, The Fugitive, 1ijac, MaX, et al. Westy...miss that guy he was a lot of fun and highly opinionated and so it goes. I used to wingup a lot with old squads from AW, The Damned and the MOL just to name a few. I even remember the first squad I was a member of many years ago in AW. The Warthogs of C-Land.
I have made a lot of friends I miss in AH that no longer participate. Wilbuz, Apar, Saw, RAM..we used to fight one another and laugh. We'd wing together in AW. Hell..YUCCA, I and Wilbuz would fly together at times. It's the Community that keeps me young.......and the fun is still there at times. Don't be absorbed by how someone plays the game. It's a choice that everyone has a right to do when they sign up to play. Don't take the game seriously. Key word is GAME. Have fun is the key. You can do it YOUR way.

I'm on a break now... check the boards everyday

Not sure, I guess someone could check my stats but they would be false because I changed my name every month to avoid being abused by a player and to be honest with you I cannot remember the last name I used. I did not fly over the xmas break which is amazing since I have 2 weeks off at that time. I am guessing October for my birthday so yeah, 6 months at least.

HiTech
I am one, who no longer plays, but pops in and peruses the forums once or twice a week.
My story just for feedback/info.
I played in the MA off and on for many years, (I think I started in 2005) as life would allow me the time to do so. The last time I came back was when AH3 went live, and got on Steam. I had hoped that the new eye candy and new exposure on Steam would bring back a large player base. My favorite times was Titanic Tuesdays, more players always was more fun for me. I played solo for years, then joined a prominent squad for years, then when I came back with AH3 I flew solo again.
I was a flyer, never got into the GV game. I would love just diving into a big furball and having at it til I died, or try to get out and land if I got a few kills, sometimes I'd like to hang on the fringes of a big furball to see if I could get into a good 1v1 fight, base defenses was always great fun too. If I couldn't find a good fight, I'd join up on a player mission to try and stir up a fight somewhere. Even though I wasn't always in a squad, I'd readily join a posted mission if it looked fun, and I met some very interesting characters that way.
When I came back with AH3, it just wasn't the same magic for me, the days of big furballs was gone, I did find the occasional great 1v1, 1v2, 2v2 fight, but it wasn't often enough to keep me interested. But most surprising to me was that nobody ran missions anymore, the functionality was still there, but nobody ever posted, so the prospects of stirring up a big fight, and the camaraderie of flying on mission channel with some different and interesting characters, was also gone.
So I only lasted a few months in AH3 before I dropped my subscription again. If the player numbers came back up to the glory days of the split MA and Titanic Tuesday, I'd come back in a heartbeat. Sadly it seems to me that that is very unlikely to ever happen. I would guess this is a game, great as I think it is, that just doesn't appeal to the upcoming, short attention span, instant gratification, generation.
Of course my opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.
-
I guess Duke meant it when he said we were breaking up for good. They'll never be another.
Well, Fork and Jaeger and I have been holding the fort. Members of the geezer group are starting to drift back. Others have stepped into the breach to keep things going. So it would be nice to see some support here, even from first responders like you. We know you have lots of extra time on your hands.
The fights are getting better. This night I had Ruah in a K4 knife fighting my 202, HlwWd in a 51D doing the same. That's rare behavior for those types of planes. The fight quality level is increasing.
