What a waste

She’s a bit overly dramatic, saying a Cessna 208 is an “iconic military” aircraft. It would be interesting if she did some factual research on how many of the iconic aircraft were left in operational condition.
-
Something tells me operational or not the Taliban will profit from our rushed stupidity..I am sure our enemies are interested in the "scrap metal" we left laying around.
Yeah I hear our military leaders stating how nothing was left operational while another video showed the yahoos flying one around already...
And this doesn't even touch the gv's and other arms we donated to their cause...
Eagler
-
eagle they said they basically destroyed aircraft or equipment at the airport. the rest was in posessiom of the Afghani military, who gave them up. now we trained Afghani pilots to fly them. so they're the ones flying them now. but in a couple of years they will run out of parts. so they will become junk.
semp
-
Then a treaty with the Taliban should never have been negotiated and signed by a self aggrandizing President who wanted to have the Taliban leadership come to Camp David on 9/11...........just sayin....
-
Or we should have not turned over our largest air force base in Afghanistan until we were sure everyone was out of country
Trying to keep politics out of it.
Just a huge waste of everything that you would think would make every American boiling mad.

Yeah...been donating, supplying arms and money to this region since the mid 80s....what's new? It dang sure isn't gonna stop

Yup, all the stuff they were showing was either russian or had ANA markings on it. I saw another report raging about all the armed humvees, but the videos they showed had guys hanging out the top of old humvees with PKMs.

Exactly what it is IMO..nothing more than insuring the next boogie man for the next 20 years we can throw lives, money and time uselessly at

I agree as far as Small Arms and light ordinance goes - it is a shame that we put that into the hands of an entity that is a threat to other Countries around the world.
The true winners after 20yrs were the Private Contractors and some secondary Russian Arms dealers selling their obsolete junk Heap to the Afghans bought with Good Ol, donated, US dollars.
As far as the military Aircraft - What product in our inventory doesn't require a few hours of maintenance, preventative maintenance, and R&R of parts here and there for every couple of hours flown?. . . . lol I am sure we didn't leave them All the Ferrari's of the Fleet. . . .lol In time those will be as effective as Iran's Airforce trying to keep the F4s, F5s, F14s and a dozen other Aircraft flying.

3500 servicemen on the ground at the time, so perhaps 1500 combat troops. how do you defend that base, the airport and help with evacuation.
that's what was inherited in January. and as cold as it sounds, citizens had months to leave, some for whatever reason waited till the end.
it's all a pile of crap and the last one has to take a bigger bite of it
semp

Everyone had at least three weeks to get to the airport if they wanted to leave. If they didn't, its on them. The take that we left Americans behind is complete B.S.

Wow ok sure
Semp had it right...it was just a big crap sandwich from the start that made many very rich while crippling and killing those sent into it for that profit.. can't wait for the next event that has us all fired up to the point we start another unwinnable war

Wasn't it wonderful how the newscaster blamed the US for all the arms in the region. I wonder which US company it was that was supplying the taliban and al queda their AK's the RPG's and they PKM's they had been using in addition to the Dishka's.
Yep the bad ol' USA giving weapons to terrorists for hundreds of years.....

One would have to have been there deep in the logistics process of moving all those people and airlift assets to have an accurate idea of how it really went down. Anyone else doesn’t know what they don’t know.

Everyone has known we were leaving (by signed treaty agreement) for over a year now.
Any American still there not wearing a military uniform, or working for the CIA, or part on a very reduced skeleton Embassy staff should have gotten their butts out at least 6 months ago.
It's not like we left troops stranded.
I'll almost wager that some of those were intentionally dragging their feet leaving to try and pin us there longer. Human anchors. Some may have just been stupid I guess.
Nope. They had over a year to have gotten themselves out on commercial flights. Even my ex could pack faster than that.
(I'm speaking about American civilians that were inexplicably still there in the final months. Interpreters are a different question.)

So, I gather you were involved in the logistics. Good for you! Hope it goes better next time!

Don't be obtuse. It has nothing to do with military logistics. Try and pay attention.
If you are an American civilian in Afghanistan:
1. You already screwed up. Pro Tip: don't go to Afghanistan unless you wear a uniform and are ordered to by you country.
2. You had a year to get out on commercial flights after the treaty was signed and publicly announced. You had no business being there 6 months after the treaty signing.

it's not that hard, deadline was May 1. was extended to August 31. me being slow, I would have walked to the airport in February or March. request a flight out of the country. would have camped at the gates if I had too.
some choose not to leave, maybe they had families that had no visas, or perhaps a girlfriend. some were doing humanitarian work. and some just waited too long. I don't know.
but it's a stretch to say they were left behind on purpose. going back a month ago, Afghani soldiers were complaining about the lack of supplies, little food or ammo. a good portion of the army existed only on paper. I hope all those government officials who took money were left behind on purpose.

Initially the CIA put those weapons into their hands, which eventually led to the defeat of the Soviets occupation. Who knew that they weren't suppose to use those weapons against anybody else?

I don't know the logistics of what it takes to fly a passenger plane. from how many cans of soda to how much fuel to who's flying.
but one thing is universal, if I'm not there, plane is Leaving without me.

As stories come out of smuggling Americans out of Afghanistan continue I think it is obvious many were left behind and we will never know the true numbers as they are not known but be sure it is far worse than has been reported
Glenn Beck is a true hero here as are many other private citizens in this disaster of a withdrawal/surrender

I propose this idea. Think of these aircraft as mobile trojan horses.
Satellites, high altitude drones and special forces on the ground are tracking them. The Taliban use them for their purposes. Intel confirms high level persons are nearby or around aircraft.
Infrared laser beam paints the aircraft and missile or bomb is sent to target.
Just a crazy thought, but possible. Chess requires thinking a few moves ahead.
Or, someone didn't think a few moves ahead.

Who pushes the button? Tom Cruise?
I think you have seem too many movies...
Real life is way less organized than that
Like handing over an entire air force base to terrorists while asking terrorists for security while we try a historic airlift from an unsecured civilian airport ...

Eagler not enough troops on the ground, that is a fact. the base is 25 miles from kabul, evacuating people from that base would only lead to more people dying. Kabul airport was the logical place.

America went in there bright eyed and bushy tailed ignoring everything that happened to other people who went in there over and over and over again.
And guess what? It happened again. It's on them and the way their country has been 'ruled.'
I'd think if you had an idea the country you were in was going to have a pull out like that sometime, I'd want to get out of Dodge sooner than later and not wait until the last second.
We had to get out of there sometime and it was past due. The guy who got us out finally was going to have to eat the 'tastiest' turd in that crap sandwich of s situation.

Maybe the Afghans will set up a national holiday...
Go out and party hard and be incredibly obnoxious and "Patriotic" in interactions with their former overlords.
Yes I can see it now... Call it, Independence Day. And celebrate it like it matters every year.
Maybe even fly their new toys over a parade or a camel race.

It's not like the Taliban is going to organize and form a standing army or air force. They will sell off most of the stuff for millions of dollars to fund their friends in the terrorism business. The thousands of small arms and night vision equipment will also come in quite handy. It's going to go down in history as one of the worst military blunders ever.
They pulled out with no warning to our Allies around the world who had people there also. They Lied about the Ghost Afgan army that had 300000 troops on the books but evaporated like water in that filthy dessert.
The US could have taken over the security of Kabul but allowed The deaths of Troops and a hundred more.
Blood will continue to flow from these mistakes. Bless our troops that have to follow lousy orders. :salute

what do you mean no warning too our allies. i knew about it since last year, in November it was decided that troops would be reduced to 2500 by jan 15, complete withdrawal by may 1. it was extended to August 31.
hard to believe other nations knew nothing about it. it was a controversial deal at the time, but hey over 2400 dead, thousands wounded. Afghani government was corrupt. why stick around.

2400 dead... something I never understood...

Your right we should just continue on with the Military Industrial Complex dictating foreign policy, worked out pretty well for them so far. Billions earned in government contracts, nothing gained, nothing lost. 20 years of war with minimal dead, yea US. Life's perfect.

We could continue to waste resources and money on Afghanistan for 5 more years, I guess? These aircraft will become scrap metal soon once any one part becomes damaged.

me thinks you don't know what a war crime is.

Yeah, sure is a shame the only people who pay for the price of war is your buddy and his family who you posted about in the other forum, and never the ones who sent him there knowing full well what was really going on.
Now the ones who speak out about this corruption 20 years later are "white supremacist zenophobe terrorist". Sure is sad how that all worked out. "Oh no. You aren't supposed be to angry nore are you allowed to question our motives after 20 years of this and nothing to show for it as they take everything back".

Since when were Mi17s considered American hardware to be left behind? And those cessnas make pretty good skydive ships but not much more formidable than that. A couple of lightly armed helos and a turbo prop jabo plane or two?
This news story, or at least the way it is being presented, is laughable. They don't have an air force. They have a bunch of lightly armed transport and recon vehicles. Might be ok for terrorising the local peasants but not much else.

which war are you mad about? korea, vietnam, granada, panama, first Persian gulf War, Libya, iraq, Afghanistan, the banana wars, and others I forgot about.
wars are always fought over power and money. every single president has sent people to war over it.
somehow only 1 gets you mad. that's kind of ironic. if you ask me the wrong countries were invaded. the one that was protected was proving financial support to them. but that's another story.
anyway we got alot of those responsible for 9 11, except for their bankers.

I'd question that. But to be fair, I don't believe any president after 1960 had a real hand in foreign engagements. They were just the face of it who could sell it to the people. They ruined a few of those presidents lives for trying to really speak to the people.
