is range text limited to where you took off from?

I always thought it was range just with the name "room" instead  of range figured was  something that was nexver changed  for ah launch or something. I did notice that  people not in range would pop in on it tho.

No. In events it seems that this does not work the same way.

"Channel 3 (Room) - This channel sends messages only to those who are nearby. If you are in the
tower, hangar, or O Club, only people in the same location can see messages on this channel. If
you are in a plane, GV, or PT Boat, only people who took off from the same field as you can see
messages on this channel. Messages on this channel show up as purple text. "

Channel 3 - The room channel allows players to broadcast to anyone in the room.  When in flight, everyone who takes off from the same field is in the room.  When not in flight, the room is the Tower.
