Someone once asked their elderly German mother what was the first sign that she saw as the beginning of the Nazi takeover in the mid 30's.

I'll paraphrase her answer...

"The first thing I remember was that as our rights were slowly being taken away the population seemed to agree with the reasons why without question. Suddenly people found themselves spying on eachother and reporting to the authorities their finding of the most trivial of infractions".

Now, don't go saying I'm equating our present situation with that of Nazi Germany, I'm not, but parallels can be drawn to the basic effects of an increasingly intrusive government.

The reason I brought this up is that we should always question the why's and what for of any government intrusion into our daily lifes whether it be the legality of selling plastic formed into something that can be used for an illegal purpose or the surfing and posting of information onto the web or anything that seems irregular and intrusive.

The days of "If you're doing nothing wrong you have nothing to worry about" are long gone. We are living in a country where our personal freedoms are slowly being taken away, unfortunatley, some people will take it lying down...that is where the real danger lies IMO.

wouldn't gun control and confiscation be more accurately be a sign of nazi like behavior than anything ashcroft is doing?   I mean... the relationship is direct.

No one likes the idea of "big brother" but let's not fly too far into the land of paranoia. Concerning the Patriot Act:

Justice Department spokesman Mark Corallo said Bryant was merely pointing out that patrons voluntarily turn over information to libraries and bookstores and shouldn't be surprised if others learn about it. Corallo also said the provisions pose no threat to ordinary Americans, only to would-be terrorists.

Before demanding records from a library or bookstore under the Patriot Act, he said, "one has to convince a judge that the person for whom you're seeking a warrant is a spy or a member of a terrorist organization. The idea that any American citizen can have their records checked by the FBI, that's not true."
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

This statement is pure roadkill.  Of course we give this information freely.  We do so because that information is supposed to be protected.

Any lose of privacy is a threat.

You really should read the relevant passages of the USAPA.  The above statement is false.

Gun ownership, right to avoid illegal search, freedom of speech or assembly or religion...... same thing. The loss of any of these would be a travesty and a slap in the face of our founding fathers.

Thank goodness there is an ACLU.

Just wait till the toejam really hits the fan.  Then again, once the dogs are out your rights wont matter worth a toejam anyway.
