My firebird has done that to me twice in 6 years... just shut off and wouldn't start. It was due to the security system. It goofed on reading the chip in the key and disabled the starter for 15 min. Nice feature, not sure if it would deter a modern thief but it's probably effective against a screwdriver jammed into the ignition.

Many years ago I came across a woman in a Firebird stuck on the side of the road so I stopped to see if I could help.
I asked her what was wrong she says "I dont know it just shut off and wont start"
she also managed to run the battery down trying.
So I hooked up may cables and got in her car to turn it over when I looked at the dash and the gas guage with its needle pegged on E.
