New vid driver installation
« on: February 11, 2003, 07:57:47 PM »
I've porked something badly, and can't figure it out.  Perhaps some assistance?

I downloaded new drivers (Catalyst 3.1) for my Radeon 8500. First I uninstalled the previous drivers (version 2.3), then went about the intstallation process -- a process I've done successfully many times before;  It's pretty hard to mess up just clicking buttons.

But I keep getting a message: Infsetup:  Infsetup has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL.  Infsetup will now close.

This happens after the files have been unpacked into the temporary folder, and at the point where I click "Yes" to accepting the license agreement, and I cannot proceed beyond this point.  Infact, trying to click through it gets me dumped to a blue screen, then have to boot to get out of it.

So I went back and tried to re-install the 2.3's.  No joy.  Same result.  Same error message.

Ditto for trying to re-install the original out-of-the-box driver from CD.

I've tried everything I can think of:  Re-downloaded the drivers; made sure all background pgms were off; cleaned the registry; deleted the old folders; etc, etc, etc.

Next step is to try pulling the card and starting from scratch.

(My system has been working fine since Day 1 with the Catylist 2.3's ... probably should have left well enough alone, but the installation notes indicated I might get a boost in performance with the new ones).

Could it be I screwed something up in the uninstall process?  Is there anything I can do to fix this "Infsetup" thingy?

I've e-mailed ATi support, but hopefully I can get a quicker answer from the tech gurus here.

Ok,

first you will need to switch to the standard VGA driver,
then reboot the box,

Once this is done you will need to remove all traces of the driver you installed...all the installer files the .dlls....everything

Re-download the new driver and unpack it in to a clean tem dir.
open the device manager and clicl on the video card..then update the driver when asked for the driver do not let windows decide but click have disk..then point it to the temp dir. it should contain an .inf file for the driver.

this should clear it up.

Cheers

Thanks, guys, I'll give this a shot.
Instructions I got from Dell for the same question involved downloading/installing DX9, booting into safe mode and a couple other steps.  This sounds a lot simpler -- I'll try it first.

I've been hoping to put off the DX9 thing .  Don't really see any need for it yet.

In case anyone else has the same problem with this install (I've read lately on other boards that many have) ... Heater's suggested did, indeed, clear up the problem.
I cancelled out of the InstallShield process after the files were unpacked into the temporary folder, and then went the 'update driver' route through Device Manager.

Finally got it to work.

Thanx again.
