Nah, it will work if you are using a base-jump chute. You wont have a spring-triggered parachute anyway since you would be jumping with the pilot in your hand.

The way a "normal" parachute works is when you pull the chord you open the back of the pack, this lets a spring push out the pilot (small chute that pulls out the big chute).

Anyway, when you do base jumps there is very little marigin for error therefore you jump with the pilot already extended. You hold it in your hand, and when you let it go, it will pull out the main chute.

Now the only reason for faliure I can imagine with an old chute is that the spring that pushes out the pilot for some reason gets broken or dull or whatever. No such problem with a base-jump chute.

But Im sure Im wrong here as usual, and in that case I am also sure that Santa can correct me :)

I don't think that there is anything in this world worth the full-scale nuclear war...

That is FREAKING FUNNY!!!! :D   Uh boroda,  you do realize our "poor" over here have TV's and cars right?  That 1st paragraph is funny coming from a Russian who has just said that parts of his country only get electricity for 4 hours a day, if at all!!! LOL!!!!  How long do you think any other Nations (besides Canada or US) would have been without power?

50 million people get the switch turned back on within 2 days?  That's pretty freakin good if you ask me....

I agree 1000% with your last sentence.  We don't need a full scale nucUlar :D war.  We just need enough to go off and take out france and her terrorist friends.....

Well, you're essentially right in that if you want to jump off a building, you definitely would want a proper BASE rig on your back.

Student rigs have a spring loaded pilot chute. A ripcord goes through the closing loop and when the ripcord is ripped out, the springloaded pilot pops out. On normal skydiving gear you have a small pouch on the bottom of your container (called BOC for Bottom of Container, duh :)). You could potentially just take the pilot out and hold it in your hand and then jump off a building.

This would still be a bad idea because normal canopies tend to 'snivel' when they open i.e a staged deployment intentional (or sometimes unintentional) to reduce the opening shock. It's not uncommon to need between 50-200 meters to get full deployment. Potentially more if you're not at terminal velocity.

BASE chutes are reinforced and packed in a different way - they're not placed in bags and the lines are IIRC stored differently. They're usually large (230sqft and upwards), very reliable and produce on-heading openings consistently. And they open HARD and fast, as in arse kicking hard and fast compared to regular canopies according to a friend of mine. With normal canopies it's not uncommon to have opening that twist between 45-180 degrees - SLAM into the building if you jumped off one :D.

As you say, a BASE rig is simpler and less things can go wrong with it. It has to be, since there ain't a spare.

You know surprisingly much for a whuffo Hortlund - are you SURE there isn't a skydiver somewhere inside you, eagerly waiting to jump out? :). We could even do some RW together. I must warn you though; I am primarily a free flyer and my belly flying RW skills aren't very good :)

Check out this link

for a discussion on emergency parachute system. And yes, it'd need to be repacked every 3-6 months to be safe. You'd need skydiving training to use it safely though - it's all in the thread. Problems would be maintaining a good body position, tracking away from the building, judging the downdrafts/updrafts etc etc. Hard enough to pull off safely by experienced BASE jumpers from non burning buildings. Still, having a chance beats not having one :)

Brilliant! Extraordinary!

You have discovered the Truth!

There are temperatures below freezing in Russia. It's a great military secret, now KGB will come and kill everyone who have read this. More to say, they have homeless people who freeze sometimes, and some Russians (shhhhh!!!) even get so drunk that they fell in the streets and freeze! 39 people frozen in a city of 10-15 millions - what an extraordinary death rate! They will all freeze soon!

And the horrible accidnent at the Ukrainian power station that was closed more then a year ago!  It's all done by the evil Russians who secretly built nuclear powerplants at the Ukraine! What a horrible crime!

You're right Boroda, I don't know how we expected to outlast the USSR.

BTW, can anyone get this hook out of my mouth :)

Another great secret JFYI: The Great Principate of Moscow no longer exists! As well as Russian Empire, Golden, White and Blue Hordes, Novgorod republik and (what a great loss!) a Kiev's Russia of Ryurik and st. Vladimir!

Look, you already outlasted four Russian states! Oh, sorry, three of them ceased to exist before white men came to America...

Well, in the 80s our military was seriously thinking of replacing nuclear warheads with conventional, because the accuracy was good enough to knock out enemy missile silos without using nukes...

Modern ICBM warhead hits the circle of 3-6 meters.

I don't think I talk too much... All this things must be well-known by now.

Edit: about "communist" channel. The funniest thing is that we have Orthodox priests blessing strategic nuclear missiles! Who said "communists"?!

So you admit that your "perfect indestructable" power systems actually go down.

Before the Cold War reaches catastrophic proportions, I think it best to close this discussion.

Boroda, you need to get over the 'Cold War' attitude.  It is just wrong on so many levels it is not even funny.
