Speeding Ticket Question..
« Reply #30 on: July 13, 2004, 02:59:30 AM »
I don't have a fine/penalty schedule in front of me, so I'm going off memory but...In Arizona, going 20 over the speed limit takes it out of the civil traffic and into crminal traffic.  It's a Class 3 Misdemeanor.  It's also 3 points on your license instead of 2.

And, if he'd written you up for doing it in a cronstruction zone(if it was one), the fine would be doubled.

LOL, so now the Cops are at fault for issuing tickets for speeding. I get it now, it's not the speeder's fault, it's the cop's

LOL @ RPM371

You sound like the kind of person who blames everyone but yourself for your own apparent inability to follow basic laws.  Oh wait, I forgot, you're a "working man" so the laws don't apply to you?  Your opinion in this kind of topic is meaningless except for entertainment value.

Bragging about getting out of dozens of citations in one year is effectively calling yourself an idiot.   If you drive that badly you're an idiot (not to mention a severe danger to everyone else on the road with you)...and if you're making it up just to chest-thump on an internet BBS...well....

Be GRATEFUL.  You know you were excessively speeding.  Be an American and pay your ticket.  Go to traffic school if you want it taken off your record.

3 points instead of 2?  WTF?  We have a 12 point system in WI.  1-19 over = 4 points.  20-25 = 6 points.  I think 25 and over means an automatic 15 day suspension and a huge fine and points.  Are traffic laws consistent throughout AR or on a by county basis?

Speeding tickets, pah.  To protect and to serve?  More like 'meet the quota'.  Bring in your budget.  Not only are they paid with tax dollars, but they rape again by 'protecting and serving' us tickets.  In Milwaukee County it's a circus.  They herd us into some cramped room downtown on the posted date, offer us a 'reduction' of points, keep the fine as is, and say we should be grateful.  **** that.  It's just another example of capitalism in action.  Traffic court is a business - they're not out there to keep anyone 'safe.'  Keeping up with traffic and you're singled out to be made an example of?  Pulled over for 5 over?  I think there are more important situations to deal with than sitting in a speed trap for hours at a time.

OK, apparently you didn't get the intended humor.

Yeah I got all those tickets, but I was working commissioned delivery and had impossible deadlines to meet if I didn't speed. The court still gets their money in the form of court costs.

It was usually the same cops that stopped me and they understood I had a job to do just like them. I think the last speeding ticket I got in a non work situation was in '93 passing thru Mineola, Texas by some Barney Fife wannabe city cop that stopped me at 3 am for 40 in a 35. I was returning from a family vacation after Christmas and he made my wife and daughter wake up get out and searched the vehicle. He strung our things everywhere, found nothing, wrote the ticket and drove off. We had the honor of putting everything back. Honestly, I did absolutely nothing to provoke the guy beforehand.

So forgive me if I have a sarcastic view of traffic tickets. They are natures little revenue makers.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

As to BM's situation.  Is that legal what the officer did?  I would contest that just to find out.  He wrote on the ticket 51 and suddenly changes his mind when he's summoned... doesn't make sense.

"51 mph but was really going 88."

"Hit the store owner with a bat but really stabbed him."

Perhaps he'll be on some family vacation at the required court date?  Good.  I say contest it.  Bring him in.  Of course, procedures may be different in your area.  In WI, procedures vary by agency.  State troopers require a plea before the said court date otherwise it's interpreted as a not guilty and they expect you to challenge it.  Milwaukee County asks for a plea on or before the court date.  If you challenge, you must travel to the courthouse atleast 3-4 more times before you're able to challenge.  And you're stuck with the fees.  Yeah, very encouraging right.  It's a business - you're either going to pay, or you're going to pay.   They could give a rat's behind about points :)

Like AKIron mentioned on the radar gun.  Where can he store this information?  Write it down somewhere?  I wouldn't feel very safe knowing an officer can change his story at whim.

What some don't know is that there are additional notes on the police copy of the ticket which don't appear on the copy given to the offender.  Pay the fine for 51 in a 45, and slow down.  It's the avenue of least pain.

So the area was normally a 70mph zone but you were doing well over 88mph?  Take your lumps.  Pay the fine and go to traffic school to get the points off your license.  Most states even allow online traffic school these days.

I bet if you had been doing the normally posted speed limit, he probably would not have written you a ticket at all.

Cool! Go as fast as you want, just don't take the mini-van full of kids with you to the grave.

Sick of seeing mangled bodies come in because they were hit by some ******* that decided 65mph wasn't enough or had a couple extra cocktails for the road.

Tell ya how it's going to work out. You plead no guilty, judge sets up a court date, cop appears and testifies that you were doing 88. Judge then proceeds to slam you. Is that really what you want to happen, cause unless there is some technicality, the judge will take the officers word over yours and no matter if you have J. Cochran as your lawyer.

Pay the fine, you were in the wrong. Chances are, you were not a twit when the cop pulled you over and he did not feel like filling out all that paperwork to take your illegal butt to jail that night.
