Which addon sound pack?????
« on: August 27, 2004, 07:27:53 AM »
Ok we have Fruda's, waffles, & Mitsu's Sound packs. (Loved Mitsu's  stuff in ah1.)

Has anyone sat down and done a reasonable apples to apples comparison & see WHICH is overall better?

Or even which would be better if you like LW planes, etc?

Mitsu, have you tried waffles?? Waffle have you tried mitsu's?

Opinions anyone?

Of course I'm going to recommend mine (I made it, after all).

Just see which sounds you like the most, and mix and match them to your liking. But if you want the most realistic sounds... Go for mine. The Warbirds team did an excellent job with their official WB2004 sound pack, which is where most of my sounds came from.

All I can say is that not all of the planes have loveable engine sounds (Japanese planes, Russian planes). That's just the way it goes.

Is that allowable? to use part of 1 game in another game?  just curious?

Yes, it's perfectly legal, since it doesn't cost money. All that they say in the license agreement is that you don't distrubute it at a price.

Ghosth try all sounds. and select your favorite.
But MSC Ver2.00 has a lot of improvements from version 1.0.
I think you surely like it if you used old ver in ah1. :D

LOL I'd really rather not download all 3, install all 3 & try to choose one, or spend the time to customise.

In the past it was easy, its was mitsu's or defaults.

I really was hopeing someone would have an definative opinion.

Fruda, sounds like you just knocked yourself out of the running where I'm concerned.  A Warbird sounds, thanks but no thanks.

B All I can say is that not all of the planes have loveable engine sounds (Japanese planes, Russian planes).

Whoops, Yak & la5n/7 lover here, think I'll pass.

They're not the crappy default WB sounds. They're very good sounds.

I was just making a point that some engine sounds in real life aren't pretty (A6M2, La-5/7). This doesn't mean they're bad --- you just wouldn't want to hear them for hours on end.

The Yak engine sounds are nice, however. And you'd really like the Merlin engine sounds.

Ok , Just in from a long week.

I guess I can pretty much explain what I am doing with the sound pack I created for use with Aces High.

The main focus of my pack was to have high quality sounds (16bit / 24khz) that are levelled and based to the headphone / vox user. All sounds should be leveled in volume where if the default sound setting of 80 can be used without heavy volume adjustment in the sounds setup. I recommend all sounds set to 80, with external aircraft sounds set to 100. This can be easily setup in the sounds.cnfg file when opened in notepad. This file can be found in your ah2 directory under you setting folder.

As far as sounds go, you'll find little nuances and different sounds for the majority of the planes. Take the stall buzzer for example -
there are 4 different versions. Each version also has wind buffet noise blended in, so when you stall, you can hear the buzzer as well as lower frequency wind buffet noise. I think it works out well. Also there are several wind noises.

On the Fw190s and f4us and ju87 the wind sounds are combined with whines, and in the ju87s case, a siren sound.

This allows for the fw190s/152s to have that whine when they are at high alts and crusing at a fast pace. The same with the f4us - hence their nickname "Whistling death"

There are several stress sounds, dealing with sounds larger planes might make in stressed situations as well as smaller airframe craft.

Mutiple flaps and gear noises. I know for a fact that the p47 gear is authentic. I used this sound in several of the american planes.
Also the p51 gear sound, theres a timed noise for the landing gear cover coming down, then the gear extension, then the gear cover coming back up. Look at it externally offline and lower the gear - an example of one of the "small details" that I am trying to accomplish with this soundpack.

Also regarding the flaps / gear sounds - they are at a lower volume than foks are probably used to. But, I think this adds a little more realism to this as I dont think the flaps / gears could be heard that well with engines running full power. You can hear them, but is easir to hear when you engines are set at a reduced throtlle, say in a landing situation.

As far as the engines in the pack, Most are authentic, or based on authentic sounds. Engines sounds are correlated with the planes they were used in, hence the early 109s and c202/205 sounding the same - same engine. Also another hurdle to overcome or workaround is making the engines sounds palatteable for both internal perspective and external.
The sound source movement that ah2 is using is actually very nice. The doppler effects are very realistic. If you have this pack, try sitting in an m3 with the engines off and have someone "buzz" you with an a-20 -  I think it sounds pretty damn good externally.

Also, I found a guy who has some authentic engine sounds and he's sending me some files as well as some footage with audio from a personal collection that I should be able to extract sounds from.
Also included in this footage is Geramn GV operations. Hopefully I can pul some authentic sounds from that, or at list have a ballpark idea to create/mix my own for Germnan ground vehicles.

This will be my basis for 2.1 or 2.5 soundpack. As well as some light tweaking of the current sounds.

Also in the topics of GVs, the sound pack I did has seperate explosion sounds set up for GV wars. Each vehicle has different operation sounds and gun sounds. There are catered "check 6" s for gv war, as well as PT boats. Pt boats have complete new set of sounds. Also the check 6's are country specific. Well at least for the British, German and American craft. I don't have a good check 6 call in the japanese language or in Russian.

Hit sounds are tweaked as well as ground contacts/richocets.
The flak burst will make you jump first time you hear it - esprcially if you have a subwoofer.

Ditching sound was reworked so instead off having a loop that plays over and over - there is an actual file the starts loud with alot of racket and the slowy drops in pitch, volume ect...simulating a craft bouncing and skiiding across terrain untill it finally comes to a stop.

I would reccomend this pack for the discerning listener. There are no "gamey" sounds, or at least I try to steer away from them.
Yes it is a large download, but thats due to the quality of sounds as well as all the nuances that are going into the individual aircraft vehicle sounds. Just remeber, just because it's named the same, doesn't mean it sounds the same :)

I'm currently using Waffle's, not combined with anything else, for ease of use. The quality is also excellent.  ( Disclaimer: He's a squaddie, but it is still a great set of sounds! )

It's also neat for all of us to have "dueling soundpacks".  We all get the benefit of these guys' effort.

So far the only thing I don't like in Waffle's pack is the "Mortars along the line" message for "enemies near", which has explosions in it that sound just like you're being hit, which makes me take violent evasive action and messes up my normally smooth, professional flying at critical times. LOL

A comment about engine and gear sounds.  I've flown several times in the back seat of a P-51.  There is no way to describe how loud it is.  There is no wind noise, there is no discernable engine noise.  The base noise level in the cockpit must be above 120DB.  I wore ear plugs and headphones, with the headset volume loud enough to hear through the earplugs.  My ears were still ringing afterward.  Take a Chevy 350, put on 2 inch straight pipes, rev it to 2750 rpm and put your ear 3 inches from the exhaust and tell me how much detail you hear.

You dont hear or feel the gear, either. I don't remember anything like the cacaphony in an airliner, or any discernable deceleration when the flaps come out.

Which is all my way of saying, if it sounds good and adds to the game, close enough.  Try them and pick the one you like. Be thankful we won't end up like all those WWII vets who needed hearing aids at 30.

What was that?
Death is no easy answer
For those who wish to know
Ask those who have been before you
What fate the future holds
