You can toggle off the automated town governing w/o governor.

Somewhere in the options... uh.. can't remember where I saw it ;)

I think my experience with rebellions is linked to the self-changing tax rates, even in cities with governors (I don't auto manage those).  If I move several units of troops out of a city, very frequently the tax rate will jump from normal or low to high, which almost instantly causes the little "happiness face" to turn blue or red and the populace starts tying nooses and eyeing the lampposts.

I'm still having a hell of a lot of fun (even with checking a lot of tax rates).  I'm trying to conform my own strat with the senate's suggestions; so far so good (but I'm still only in 235 B.C.)

Minimum specs is 1ghz cpu and 256mb ram, Though realisticly it needs 512mb of ram and 1gb is best and apparently gives a big performance gain. Runs suprisingly smoothly during the big battles considering amount going on, much better then expected.

You can adjust to many different screen resolutions and graphic detail to increase peformance.

The conquest of Spain and Gaul is now complete, and I've just taken Londonium, and landed troops taking Jerusalum...

The best thing I've seen was meeting head on over a bridge with Briton light chariots charging my advancing triarii and watching the majority of the chariots smashing into the front ranks and their momentum throwing the chariots (and some of my legionaires) into the water!! Looked soooooo Two Towers!

City rebellions can be a real drain of resources. I'm having real problems with the three greek cities I've occupied (Sparta/Corinth/Athens), and the same with the spanish...I should've exterminated the populace instead of just mercifully enslaving the locals!

I've got a P4 2.66 512RDRam GeFti4600 and running the battles @ 1024 with absolutely no pauses (amazing considering the amzing amount of detail)

Son is 10 and doesn't get to play half Life yet! He's good at RTS games though and as you say they are educational. Age Of Mythology is a case in point.

cannot install
« Reply #22 on: September 28, 2004, 05:06:06 AM »
Would like to try this game, but cannot install it.

My main HDD is partitioned with dual boot. The first partition (drive C) is now empty - used to have W-Me for running AH. The second partition (drive D) is my main system - W2000Pro.

The RTW installer tries to install to a locartion on drive C by default. Changing this to point to a valid, pre-existing folder on drive D does not work. The installer reports missing files right from the start.

I don't like it when software is written to default to specific drive letters.

:(

Beet1e,

Hmm.. I wonder if its because of missing temporary folders, where the installer tries to extract part of the installation files.

I downloaded the demo.  I wasnt as impressed as I thought I would be.  Yes, it is a good game, but it didn't get me hooked as it did for some of you.

Tried the demo also and it's a pretty poor example. The game itself and battles are 100 times better then the demo. Playing at harder levels is a real challange, both in the strat map and the battles.

AI seems improved alot from what I remember in MTW, especially in regards to using cavalry and skirmish troops. Only fault I have at the moment is that it's to careless with generals as they end up charging into battle and getting killed.

One problem with MTW was that the AI hardly ever sieged or attacked your castles, not so in RTW I've had to break many sieges or being suprised by AI attacks on cities using Rams and/or other siege equipment. Heaps of fun. :)

Hmmm...I have had many sieges in MTW.  I usually fight a bit and then retreat to the castle unless I am greatly outnumbered then I retreat to the castle right away.  I always make sure that each province had one or two groups of strong defenders.  You retreat to the castle then once the attackers bust open the door or knock a hole in the wall you just line up in front of the breach and repel them one group at a time.  If you rotate your defenders this way you can defeat a force many times your size.

In Rome the AI uses different seige engines to attack you at different points. Holding the breach works if you can stop the ladders etc. taking your walls and exiting inside your fort at different points.Or simply holding the walls and raining spears or flaming arrows onto the defenders from above.

Flanking plays a great part in winning battles.
