Use Paint.

Trim Nilsen's picture as you did, but save it as a 24 bit bitmap. Set the background/eraser golor to some odd color that's not in the pic (I usually use lime green). To do this right click on lime green in the color bar. When you paste the trimmed picture on the one that your putting it into, also right click on lime green. Look at the lower part of the toolbar; there are two big buttons that toggle transparency on and off. Always save your work as a 24 bit bitmap. Do not convert it to a jpg until you are finished.
