A tsunami hits, with tens of thousands dead.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Ripsnort has gone.... oh.... about 30 days without bragging about something (although I did see a thread started by someone here today blessing Rip for having beautiful kids or whatever, so despite missing that post I think it's safe to assume that Rip was jonesin' for some kudos - it's a cycle - and made another one of his "look at me" posts).

Maybe not enough people complimented him on his kids. Or maybe taking advantage of the sheer number of tsunami dead was just too irresistable. I don't know. But you can set your watch to this kind of thing.

If you thought for a second.... one second... that when Rip whipped out his checkbook, the thought of how he would parlay it into another "look at me" post (or three) didn't cross his mind... then you don't know Ripsnort. Hell, it was probably his sole and guiding motivation.

I only wonder how big a hit his $110,000/year "toy" budget took on account of this noble act of charity.

Heh, Nash has Rip envy.

(Matthew 6:1-4)

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven.

So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

"But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Are you guys confusing the american red cross with the international red cross ?

From what I know of the IRC in Rwanda, they were very fast, effective, and they supported their volunteers, unlike the UN there.

A) Yes I have.  - about 10 minutes ago, to the British Red Cross. I've no idea about their salaries etc. I was responding to a weblink in my daily newspaper. I checked the "Giftaid" box, Giftaid being a system by which charities can reclaim the basic rate income tax which I will have paid on my gift - a laudable and charitable feature within our tax laws, but one which is to be abolished by Tony Blair's govt. in 2005.

One thing we might want to be cautious of is criminals cashing in by setting up fraudulent websites to receive donations designated for the legitimate charities. It's a sad indictment of our world today that some people really would stoop that low.

I shall also be paying a large tax bill on or before 31st January. Anyway, the amounts are not important, and my gift was piffling in the face of a disaster in which millions of people will have lost everything they ever had.

I don't know about the international red cross but I figure it is pretty much run along the lines of the American one... how much is spent on salaries?   whatever it is it is money wasted just as surely as the money wasted on the UN.

"The charity that hastens to proclaim its good deeds, ceases to be charity, and is only pride and ostentation."

- William Hutton

Even the Gospel talks about giving in private, stating that giving in secret will be rewarded by God in the open. However, giving so that others may see your generosity for the purpose of being praised by one's peers; that praise will be the only reward.

"Take heed that ye do not (give) your alms before men, to be seen of them: Otherwise ye shall have no reward of your Father, which is in heaven.

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.

That thine alms may be in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret himslef shall reward thee openly."

Matthew 6:1-4, King James version, Dake's annotated reference Bible.

You can be sure that many churches, synagogues and mosques will be having special collections this week to aid the people of SE Asia. You can give there or give to any number of charities via the internet.

If you give and what you give is no one's business but yours.

My regards,
