This is only an issue if you believe newsweek has any journalistic standings at all. Also if you think there is any such thing as true journalistic professionalism and truth in reporting standards.

Newsweek is nothing more than a slick page tabloid. It should be right at home on those racks near the cash registers at your supermarket.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

The fanatics are just that......fanatics. I'm sick of people catering  to their hatred. There is no excuse for their behavior.

I'm sick of people who have the mindset of "we can't say that, it will upset the muslims". As if the radical muslim's "bezerker" attitude is somehow a legitimate reaction to things that upset them.

I'd be lying if I said I was upset that some *******-nutburgers had assumed room temperature, but what REALLY hacks me off is the ZEAL with which mainstream media reports on even the slightest hint of poor behavior by the US military---notice they ran with this story with only ONE source, an 'unnamed' one at that--I truely believe Abu-Graib (?) was a fairly minor thing---some people were 'humiliated'---in Saddam's day, they were tossed into plastic shredders, yet this crap led the news cycle for 6 months straight---our military's good name was just getting back into that worlds' good graces, and now this chit. Muslims will NEVER believe it didnt happen--Newsweek's weak denials will be seen as merely pressure from the imperialist US government. Four fediddleing years of work, and countless lives has just gone down the drain over there.

This story doesnt even rank in the top million.

WMD's
Genocide in the Sudan.
Saudis that hate us.
Medicare
Gas prices
Trees

Those are serious issues.

I dont care who flushes or pisses on a book, flag, or whatever.

Plenty of other outlets reporting similar stories from varying sources:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn?pagename=article&contentId=A29276-2003Mar25¬Found=true

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/content_objectid=14042696_method=full_siteid=50143_headline=-MY-HELL-IN-CAMP-X-RAY-name_page.html

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4505403.stm

I haven't seen any retractions from these sources as yet.
