Above 10k... yes.  Below 10k... yum!

Typhoon'll outaccelerate, outrun, and outturn a 51 for sure at 8k or below.  Keep in mind, this is coalt/cospeed.  A fast 51 inning against a slow Typhoon coalt surely has the advantage.

P.S. NEVER underestimate how well the Typhoon turns.  Doing so is sure death.

Phew, insult the P-51 and ye shall receive its wrath!

Acceleration is what I meant.  Myself and another player both took off in P51s a few days back.  We'd lost radar so we were going to get high and watch for cons until radar returned.  We *slowly* climbed to 25k and leveled.  And waited and waited and waited for the P-51 to accelerate.  I never saw anything faster than 250 even after ditching the drop tanks and waiting some more.

I've really taken a liking to the Spit 9, with its great speed, handling and visibility yet it carries very little ammo.  The 109G10 is nice too, but the cockpit views are not nearly as nice.  That's why Im hoping to work the irks out of the pony so bad.  Great amount of ammo and if i could only get the thing to hit this magical 400+ mph speed I've read about...

Thanks!

P.S.  So, no torpedos in 1.05?

That was us rosco-. 13th TAS. It sure was fun, and you all did a great job trying to defend. Nice formation in those LANCs too. <SALUTE>

The funny part is we were just about to rtb after having been flying for over 1/2 hour without seeing anything to kill.

Pony is almost untouchable once it has speed.  But low and slow.. like last night.. forget it.  Best bet is to climb out and keep your eye on the G meter during combat.. below 2 g's and it'll rock !

I saw the stuff going on at A5 LePaul (short for Les Paul?) and I figured you'd grab a tiffie, n1k or spit.. anything that can accelerate when being bounced.

:)
Welcome to AH

Outaccellerate?
Maybe.

Outrun?
No way...maybe if pony has no WEP left or has much more fuel than Stang.  May take a sector or two to catch but believe me...you WILL be caught.  Just ask Wardog or Bash who also fly the Tiffy extensively...as Wardog has said..."the only plane which I really fear is the P-51".  And for good reason.

Outturn?  Again, no way...presuming we are talking about a regular turn fight without significant difference in weight the Pony turns just as well with one notch of flaps(if not better) than the Tiff.

Now what I might add here is that it could very well OUTMANEUVER the stang since it does seem to roll a bit better at low speeds than the stang does.  The biggest problem I have run into in the Stang is a low-speed scissor engagement.  Pony's roll at low speed is nothing to marvel at.

I have fought many pilots MUCH better than me who were flying Tiffs while I was in a Stang and 90% of the time when we start co-E (or even while I was at an E disadvantage) they either have to try and disengage (at which I run them down and keel them) or they try to turn with me and soon find they are losing angles quickly ( at which time they try to extend, get run down and die   ).

Leave it to Hazed to always divert the fun posts back on topic!

Yes, it is my GUESS that they will have torpedos since:

1) The TBFs main armament was a single torpedo

2) The PT boats had torpedo launchers on the port and starboard railings

3) When I asked Pyro about the lack of torpedos on the PT boats in the screenshots, he said Nate hasnt finished the modeling for them yet.

Satisfied???

Ah!  12 posts later I get an answer! hehe

A5 was brutal last night, I was going to get a G10 or something, but I can seriously fly the Spit9 a lot better.  Since my main adversaries were low P51s and F4s, I needed some that could outturn them.  Im sure there are better ones, but I like the feel and handling of the Spit.  Perhaps I would have been better served in another aircraft....but I sure racked up a lot of skydiving time

Absolutely.  Above about 250mph, the Typhoon outaccelerates anything under 8k... including 109s or Yaks.  Where it falters is at speeds below that, and if it gets too slow, chances are it'll never get enough headway to outrun either of those planes.

No way.  The only way that 51... coalt and co-E, mind you, is going to catch the Typhoon is if the Typhoon bleeds off too much speed in turns and gets below its magical acceleration number.  The Typhoon bleeds an incredible amount of speed in turns.  If the 51 can force some turns and get the Typhoon under 200mph, it's another ballgame.  Though I don't know for sure, it also seems that the 51 zoom climbs better.

I think you'd be surprised just how well the Typhoon really CAN turn.  Its instantaneous turnrate is especially nice... it reminds me of the 38 from AW in this respect.  It'll go a couple of turns with the Spit IX before having to bug out.

And the Typhoon's turnrate at slow speed is nothing to marvel about.    It'll really wallow under 200mph, and if you get under 160mph, forget about it.  This is a plane that's truly happiest above 220-240mph.  A slow speed 51 to Typhoon engagement must be a really sad thing to watch.

I'd love to hook up for some 51 to Typhoon fights sometime just for practice... nothing about bragging rights here or showing whose plane is better.  More like some friendly duels to explicitly learn the strengths and weaknesses of both planes.

LePaul.
If you simply HAVE to come up a vulched base take SpitV. Its Much better at low alt base defense than a Spit9. Its not as fast but it accelerates almost as fast. It turns inside and rolls better than a 9. Also if your really getting vulched take 25% fuel....

LLB OUT!!!!!!!!

Hey +Dead, soon as I get my Vader I'd be up for some friendly duels to find the strength and weaknesses of the two
