Engine Damage
« on: November 12, 2005, 05:34:33 PM »
I'd like to see more engine damage than just oil hits. I don't really want specific engine damage modeling, just more of a cough-cough-sputter effect with power surges and possible engine failure if pushed too hard after taking damage.

I feel this would REALLY add to the immersion. It would really bring some nervous shaking, heart-thumping, and cold sweaty hands trying to make it back to base.

It think maybe haveing Cylinders that could be damaged would be neat. For example a plane with 12 cylinders might have two damaged ones and the plane would run on only 10 cylinders then

All for this... for the last 4 years I've been all for this. :D

I'm an audiophlie too.  Throw in the extra .wav files to go with the various forms of damage.  ie, rough running, sound of gradual engine seize, etc, so our sound artists can get creative.

I've always wondered about this.

Some anecdotes mention engines being damaged, coughing, sputtering, running rough and etc etc.. and yet the pilt nursed it through hours of flight back home..

Could there be any kind of engine damage, which is non fatal? Power decline? Running rough(maybe the screen would slightly shake indefinately...)? Or etc etc..

If so, I'd love to see it implemented.

but those times where aiming for a lalas or runstang dweebs head, and your aim is off by about 5 ft and 10 bullets enter his engine, then he is scared and runs. Instead those 10 bullets slow him down, so he is forced to turn with you, then you have a 2nd chance to make him dance..

An engine thats been hit, damaged, and  is loosing oil should not run like a pristine engine.

It should cough, sputter, choke, rattle and otherwise let you know its on its last legs. As oil levels drop power output should also drop. Till right before it seizes up its only putting out half the power it was before.

Think of it this way furball, you make a move on someone and manage to smoke his engine.

At this point would you prefer

A: he has undiminished power and can run home, land & exit safely

B" He loses power quickly, and is forced to ditch or die as a result, giving you the kill.

Anything that happens to a complicated system like an aircraft engine. Should have consequences, some of them severe.  Even a fuel leak could concieveably cause sputtering, etc, lowering power & speed.

Personally i would like to see alot more Engine features such as:

Engine Fires for an Overheated Engine, Fire w/fuel leak instead of letting you fly for about 5 mins makes you blow up instantly, Ability to Blow the Engines for overworking them :D, if you break a prop on the propeller make it just 1 prop that breaks not all of them on that engine, Add some as said above if your engine gets shot it doesnt just lose oil it can catch fire after awhile, Lose Fuel, Slow the users speed, and if the engine is hit right start to sputter.

That would make AH so much FU:O:O :O N

If you broke a BLADE on a propeller it would be the same as an engine kill because you would have to shut it off due to the blade imbalance. Or, I suppose, you could leave it on and tear the engine itself from its engine mounts Would be an interesting graphic. Would still be a kill though.

i dont got enough perkies as it is and i like upen my lancs to kill 1 dang t 34 or wirble its fun droping 42 bombs

If you threw a blade you would have about this >< much time to kill the engine, before the engine (or atleast the prop, hub, and gearbox) and your aircraft go their seperate ways.

Just some engine damage that causes immediate power loss, or significant vibration which is worse as power increases, and since you can make the damage a varriable, it could be anything from slight to HOLY CRAPOLA.  Imagine losing 30% power, or not being able to go full power for more than a few seconds without blowing the engine.

While I agree that some engine degradation due to certain damage might be cool, I think some of you under-estimate those engines ability to perform damaged. I'm sure that engine designers may have considered that their powerplants may take damage. The redundant systems on a lot of those engines were there for that exact purpose. As for losing a blade, Many planes landed with broken and severed blades. Again, those planes were designed for combat and considerations of taking damage were in their design. You ever see a P51 engine mount and bolt? If i recall correctly, i read somewhere (i'll try to find it) that in most wreckages, the engine was the one thing that remained bolted to it's mounts.

JB42, you are correct, but most of the time those mounts are stuck to the engine, and not to the airframe itself lol :)
