I'm happy with the way things are, WRT gun legislation in GB. I think most people are, or else how do you explain that whilst there was a 400,000+ strong march on London in protest at the ban on hunting foxes with hounds, there was no equivalent wave of protest WRT the ban on handguns? The 1997 ban on handguns was enacted by a democratically elected government. If this piece of legislation went against the core values of the British public at large, how then do you explain that the government that passed it was reelected in 2001, and again in 2005?

They're not homogeneous societies like yours, they don't have the population of a small city like yours, they aren't isolated on a small island like yours, the population has a smaller number of blood relatives than yours.....

...... significant differences.

VERY significant differences.

Iceland is an isolated, unique situation.

If you were a member of the Countryside Alliance at that time, you'd have been advised NOT to protest as their leadership felt they had best take a very low profile in order not to risk losing ALL guns.

Englishman have no 2nd Amendment, so knee-jerk, meaningless political reactions can remove handguns as legal posessions.

The fact that the banning made absolutely no difference in homicide statistics is probably lost on the sheeple/electorate. It seems lost on you at least.

I have no input to your politics or laws, nor would I care to have any. Pass any law you like; I just think it's pretty stupid to ban something to no effect and then crow about it.

Oh...and they'll come for your particular vices sooner or later. Alcohol can't be far behind as a threat to public safety.

Yup. Very isolated. But still a group of humans. Cut 'em off from food and water, remove or marginilize the police / civil authority.

Betcha they discover the value of a gun.

The countryside alliance march had nothing to do with guns. It was in protest at the ban on hunting foxes with hounds. Like I said (more than once) there WAS no protest at the gun "ban". Can you say... nonissue?

I am already on record on this board as having said that the gun "ban" (and I use quotes because it wasn't really a ban) made little change - in fact the words I used originally were "bugger all difference". The 1997 legislation was passed because the govt. feared that if it did nothing and there was another atrocity like Dunblane, they would get the blame.

I think it's time you paid another visit to Britain in order to keep up with the times. The opposite of what you said is true, and we now have 24 hour drinking. Of course, licensed premises don't have to stay open 24 hours, but it's nice that the pub stays open till midnight on a Friday instead of 11pm.

Ahhh... the Countryside Alliance.  Yes, they WOULD have all been out there protesting but they were afraid.  lol

Just how many members did they have in 1997...the year they were FOUNDED?

Yep, I was wrong there; had my dates mixed up.

They were founded after the law passed.

I'm sure you can't see THAT as a reaction to such a pointless law.

In any event the present gun owners I've talked to in England offered the sentiment I mentioned above.

Here's how far it's gone in England; the police have decided to proceed with prosecution of these two ladies. The people concerned were on private land over which there were rights of way for the public.

It's posted on a Gun Dog board I visit and readers are encouraged to "pass it on".

I think it serves as a wonderful reminder of the law of unitended consequences and of the inflexible idiocy of the government.

Dear All

A situation has arisen in the Hertfordshire Area that I believe all Gundog members should be made aware of and one that could have serious implications for the manner in which gundogs are trained in the future.

On 29th January 2006 two ladies, Jacqui Crew and Sue Jones, went to Symmonshyde Woods near Hatfield to train their gundogs. Prior to doing so they contacted the local farmer and sought his permission to go to the woods for this purpose. That permission was readily granted.

They took with them dummies and a starting pistol and during the afternoon gave their dogs a number of retrieves.

They were approached by two local police officers who immediately seized the starting pistol and informed them that they were being reported for their possession of the starting pistol. According to the ladies the officers were brusque and aggressive towards them and refused to listen to any explanation. When the ladies telephoned the farmer using their mobile in the presence of the officers they refused to speak to him.

They were clearly shocked and upset by what had happened and wrote to the local Chief Superintendent complaining about the actions of his officers and demanding the return of the starting pistol. They did not receive any response, indeed the letter was not even acknowledged.

Within the last few days they have both received through the post a summonse to appear at Hatfield Magistrates Court next Wednesday. The offence is:

On Sunday 29th January 2006 at Hatfield without lawful
authority or reasonable excuse had with you in a public place,
namely the Public Picnic Area, Symmondshyde Wood,
Hammond Lane, Hatfield an imitation firearm revolver.

Contrary to Section 19 The Firearms Act 1968.

The receipt of this summonse has come as a terrible shock to both of them and they have sought and obtained legal advice. The case will be adjourned this coming week until September in order that they can mount a vigorous defence to the charge.

There are two major issues that I see in this case, the first is the status of the land upon which the training was taking place. The two ladies clearly believed that they were on private land hence they had asked permission to be there. The second and more worrying aspect is the starting pistol being interpreted as ‘an imitation firearm’ in these circumstances. I do not believe that parliament envisaged this section of the Act being used against two ladies training their gundogs on a Sunday afternoon.

I am concerned about the outcome of this case for Jacqui and Sue but I also feel the implications for every Club or Society in the country could be far reaching. Most of the people that I know that train dogs often use a starting pistol to do so. Everyone needs to be aware of this case so I would ask you to communicate it to as many as you can.

If anyone had experienced similar situations can you let me know in order that I can pass it to the defence representative.

The Kennel Club and BASC have also been informed.

And just so you know that not ALL Brits think like Beet, here's a comment that sounds as if common sense is still alive in England.

Well, I shall carry on using mine and chance a spell in clink.

I'm sick of living in a society that picks on the innocent and law abiding because it is too incompetent to deal with those who are a real threat.

We are awash with petty laws supposedly to protect our freedoms and liberty, which in reality are conducting a war of attrition against those very things.

Real guns are very frightening - and I speak from experience, having nursed patients (under police protection )who have been shot.

I live in a city with a rather unfortunate reputation for gun crime. But I will always fight for the right to pursue hobbies/sports/interests etc in a law abiding manner.

The spirit of the law is as important as the letter of it. Jeff is right - common sense is not all that common - but it is still legal - at the moment. This case is spectacular in its stupidity. Its our taxes that are being wasted yet again.

And that's from a woman.

Threads like this always start out soooo cool. I would love to post my arsenal but what’s the point.

If you like guns why feed the same people over and over. It’s always the same argument. It gets so old I never even trudge through these anymore.

If you hate guns/disagree with the current U.S. position on them. Then stay out of the thread. There is no point in posting from either side, its not like anyone is going to change anyone’s position.

Now, back to the arsenal!
