I am eagerly awaiting it too...

I'd like to know the truth of the internet rumors that it was rated "R" at first, then Speilberg went in a talked them down to a PG13

It DOES sound like it is not the kids show we remember, and alot of kick arse in it.
I don't know what to put here yet.

My sons grew up with Transformers.  Watched it some with them.

The movie trailers indicate that Spielberg and crew did their work well.

On the other hand, the thought of other Japanese anime characters coming to the big screen makes my gorge rise.

Dragonball Z????

I used to play transformers in kindergarten.. They quickly got old, but I have to admit that seeing these designs after all this time.. They look damn cool.
It'll be cool if their psychologies aren't too Deus Ex-ized.

And DBZ was as cool as watching good old samurai movies back in the 80s, before today's marketing made it a braindead anime fad.

Anybody notice that the most profitable movies nowadays are those with child oriented subject matter? I mean comic book characters, pirates, saturday morning cartoons. All the special ed kids grew up to be film producers?

When I was a child I thought as a child and spoke as a child, and when I became a man I took that child out back and had him shot.

I think you're missing the point.

1. Generation X is huge.  It's the second baby-boomer generation.
2. These films appeal to this group of people because they invoke nostalgia.
3. Nostalgia is one of the most powerful emotions.

Before this, it was wave after wave of 1960s movies because baby boomers were the biggest generation.  And peppered throughout all of this was a constant shower of WWII movies because IT invoked nostalgia for a bunch of people too.

Nostalgia is the real story here, not the fact that it's a movie based on a toy or cartoon.

What I've heard from previews so far:

1. The special effects are fantastic.
2. The story is less so.

This is pretty much what we expect, probably, but the difference will be in determining if it's "bad story" like Armageddon (which was awwwwwful) or bad story like Independence Day (while no Citizen Kane, was at least consistent and entertaining).

So I went to see it yesterday, and all I have to say is I was really surprised by the movie.  I actually enjoyed it a lot.

There is room left open for a sequel and I believe they already have a green light to start on it.
