Zombie Attack: Reading list
« on: January 27, 2008, 09:35:34 AM »
Its been a while since we had a good zombie thread, so here goes my attempt.

What books/manuals would you consider essential, specific titles or general categories, for your end-of-civilization or post zombie attack library. While the topic specifies a zombie attack, include your choices for general end-of-civilization-as-we-know-it survival fare. Don't forget field manuals, I know FMs relating to survival exist, just not the specific names.

My list so far:

Medical/First aid
Dummies guide to butchering
Trapping guides
Gardening for Dummies
Log Cabin construction for Dummies
Welding Basics
Smithing
Currently flying as "Ruger"

How is the zombie survival guide not on there?

World War Z, too, if you'd like to hear some "firsthand" zombie fighting strategies.

Yep.. I think my choices are still good...  I had said..

"What to grab?

I just can't leave without my cut down, 4" redhawk with the stag grips... I know... overkill and the ammo is heavy but... love that gun and... even a chest shot will slow down one of the undead.

practical matter.. the mini 14 would be good.. the garand is more to my liking but.. the mini had 30 round mags and weighs nothing and has no recoil.. easy to get back on target... and... a head shot with a 223 is pretty devestating...

The kimber 45... plenty good for zombies and accurate... quick reloads... ammo easy to find lying around.

340 pd... 357 at 12 oz and a few 5 shot speedloaders all fit in the front pocket... great last ditch gun... 125 hp will bust their melon good but....

The real king would probly just be my model 97 trench gun pump shotgun with a bandolier of 00 or number 4 buck. even has a bayonet to keep em at arms length during reloads... extremely reliable shot gun good sling.

might throw in the walther ppk in 32 and a few mags for last ditch stuff too.."

Now that I bought a Henry in 44 mag...  and after watching the second or third of the remakes of "night of the living dead"..   that Henry might not be too bad.. the 44 mag is pretty bad on the recoil but the thing will hold 13 of the plenty potent 44 specials.

World War Z did discuss the issue of damage to the zombies pretty well.

Basically it said that ONLY a brain shot will kill, regardless of size.

I thought the pieces about Yonkers and later engagements were very well thought out.

Wouldn't you have to take out a pretty fair hunk of the brain?   I mean..  real folk get shot with a 22 or 25 in the head all the time and hardly know it.

Yes.  But in the book they downsized the standard round to .22 or so, and made each round Incendiary / High Explosive.  They didn't really describe the new standard issue rifles other than they were Semi-Auto, Highly accurate, low-recoil, and extremely reliable.

low recoil and accurate and with enough punch to make a big mess after penetrating skull would all be good.

I still think a 12 gauge with #4 or 00 buck would be good even with the heavy recoil  when things got close.   A lever gun in 44 special or light loaded 44 mag would be good.. you could make slugs from wheel weights over a campfire.

Ammo weight could become a real concern, the lighter the effective round, the better.  Sure, 12 gauge slugs would work fine, but the number of shots you can carry around...

wow that AA-12 RECOILESS auto shotgun is really impressive, and practical too.    man, that is nice.

A lot of yas are probably gonna laugh at this, but I kinda like the idea of trapping zombies.  A feller could easily carry a bunch of those big prettythang bear traps in the back of a pickup truck and set them around high traffic areas with a stake holding each one n the ground.  you wouldn't even need to bait them if you put them in a good spot. Then go out each  morning and see what you got.  it would allow you to get some good use out of your .22 handguns too, plinking those zoms btw the eyes and taking your time at it because the dummies got one foot in a trap.

A good protective combat helmet would be necessary, I believe, as don't Zombies have a taste for brains?

A good helmet would help to frustrate their hungry desires.
